Ald. Virginia Rugai joined Ald. Ed Burke (14th) during the May 14 City Council meeting to introduce an ordinance that would require that all domestic cats and dogs in the city be spayed or neutered. They cited a host of violent attacks, most recently the April 10 attack of a Southwest Side woman by five pit bulls. What do you think: Should the city adopt an ordinance that requires pet dogs and cats to be neutered?

A bungalow renaissance
2008-04-28 21:32:00
By Elizabeth Riley Medill Reports - Chicago For many Chicagoans, the warmth of home is found in a bungalow. Bungalows are memories of baking chocolate chip cookies at grandma's house, block parties on Independence Day, the smell of babies and friendly, familiar, smiling faces. They are constant reminders of the past. "People long for the kinds of things they remember as children," said realtor Mark Ahlheim about homebuyers and their attraction to bungalows. read more

Shake, rattle & roll
2008-04-18 17:07:00
I knew I wasn't dreaming when my house began to shake around 4:45 this morning, but my wife insisted that she felt nothing. I checked the house, looked out the windows and found everything as normal as always. It wasn't until later when I realized that a 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred just after 4:30 ... 265 miles south in West Salem, Ill. Did anyone else notice the quake this morning?

"It was a wonderful visit," said Bishop Timothy Lyne, auxiliary bishop of Chicago. "One of the unique things I remember is there was no major crime in the city when the Pope was here." read more

Student lobbyists get adult lesson
2008-04-10 17:05:00
By James Edwards Medill Reports - Chicago Chicago high school students received a civics lesson Wednesday afternoon, and they traveled to the state Capitol in Springfield to get it. Clemente High School students were in Springfield to lobby legislators for more money for schools and for stricter gun laws. The verdict is out on the money for schools, but the students' request for tightened gun laws - in the wake of the shooting deaths of 20 CPS students this school year - apparently didn't impress legislators. read more

car share
2008-03-28 13:19:00
I walk, take the train and ride my bike much more than I drive. I've been a member of the I-Go car share program for a while and often use it in other neighborhoods. I'd love to see them add a location here. If your driving is occasional, not enough that paying to maintain a car really makes sense, check them out. http://www.igocars.org/ If they get enough demand in this area, we could get a location here. Their cars are typically based at grocery stores or train stations.

New Beverly library necessary?
2008-03-26 15:40:00
Construction is expected to begin on a new Beverly Branch of the Chicago Public Library some time this year. Property has been purchased at 1962 West 95th St., just east of its current site, where it has been located since 1981. Some people say the current location is just fine and there's no need to build on another site. Do you think the branch needs a new location?
Playlot designs to be unveiled
2008-03-25 15:27:00
Come out at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mt. Greenwood Park Fieldhouse to see the designs that will become a major part of the new playlot. This will be your only chance to see the designs and have any final input on them before they are turned in to the beautiful mosaics. Elements of the designs came from residents of Mt. Greenwood. We have had many of the area schools get involved, as well as art clubs, a brownie troop, and the many individuals (young and old) that came to the design workshops at the park. We have been very impressed by the amount and quality of the submissions we received. read more

Fisticuffs over water costs in neighboring burbs
2008-03-21 00:00:00
By Kahrin Deines Medill Reports - Chicago Look out Chicago's front window and you'll behold one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. More than a thousand cubic miles of water at our doorstep. With the other four Great Lakes, more than 20 percent of the world's surface water. Not much of an incentive to limit our showers or stint on washing the car. But in these days of resource competition, even communities near the southernmost Great Lake are starting to feel the pinch of water scarcity. read more

No-tolerance policy?
2008-03-11 00:08:00
After this year's 30th annual South Side Irish Parade some neighbors in the areas just beyond the parade route noted that police seemed to be actively enforcing a no-tolerance policy attributed directly to the new superintendent, Jody Weis. Paddywagons were full all day long as police were busy arresting dozens of paradegoers, actually a rare occurrence in previous years. Should the Chicago Police Department enforce a no-tolerance policy during the annual South Side Irish Parade?
