Mandy Moore began her set at the Paradise on Sunday with "Slummin' in Paradise." Moore might be a Hollywood star, but her beaming smile said this was exactly where she wanted to be: playing in a bona fide rock club with her band, her tour bus parked outside. "All I ever dreamed of since I was a little girl was going on tour," she declared halfway through her set.Moore, who was born in Nashua, was to have coheadlined the Berklee Performance Center with Paula Cole, who canceled due to "an unforeseen family commitment," said a press release. Mandy Moore takes the stage. I went into this thinking, "Didn't she do that generic late-'90s pop song 'Candy'?" Well, yes she did, but I was dead wrong to judge her based on her work as a 15-yearold, a definite dumb move in the first place. She has matured way more than I'd ever expected, in terms of song writing as well as song content. It's also refreshing to see a person actually singing on stage, instead of lip-synching and only doing three songs like another so-called "pop princess." Though I would never listen to a Mandy Moore CD nor pay for a ticket to one of her shows, she can sing well, plus she also dropped an f-bomb that I respected. Review from thewilyfilipino.com:It was Mandy Moore's first concert ever in San Franc isco -- "at the Fillmore, can you believe it," she asked. I think a smaller venue would have worked better. Some people on Last.fm commented with surprise about my going to a Mandy Moore concert. But friends know I have a soft spot for pop. And yes, J-Lu dragged me there, but I do like her latest album: Wild Hope, is a remarkably strong bid for singer-songwriter status; it's a solid, if safe, collection of sober, mature folk-pop that gets better with each listen. It's a far cry, in any case, from her old teenybopper days, which is something clearly reflected in the setlist. In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
