Friction On Books : Simple But An Amazing Experiment
2007-10-09 21:47:00 Dave Ansell from The Naked Scientists has an interesting article about frictional force. Here is a part from his article.Using nothing but a tiny bit of friction stick two books together so you can't pull them apart. What you need For this experiment all you will need is a couple of paperback books which are about the same size and thickness. They should survive the experience. What to Do You want to interleave the two books together about 4-5 pages at a time. The quickest way to do this is like a riffle shuffle. When you have fully interleaved the books push them together so there is an overlap of about 2-3cm. The hold the two books by their spines and try to pull them apart. What may Happen You should find that however hard you try you won't be able to pull them apart. What is going on?If you want to learn what is the science behind of it click here More About: Books , Experiment , Amazing , Simple , Friction

Inakadate: Rice Art of the Talented Japanese People
2007-08-08 09:07:00 Located in Japan, Inakadate residents work together to create giant figurative pictures by carefully planting different varieties of rice, sometimes stretching across multiple farming fields. Since 1993 the residents have taken it upon themselves to select different themes each year. This year the farmers are using the green phase of the rice cultivation to depict motifs of Hokusai's 36 views of Mount Fuji. Unlike crop circles, Inakadate Rice Pictures need to be well-planned from the beginning instead of an afterthought. These works of art are only visible from aerial vantage points until September when the rice will be harvested. More information on the village and the rice fields here. Numerology for Hopelessly Poor Minds
2007-08-05 17:37:00 Ridiculed by scientists, mathematicians and sceptics, numerology has struggled for acceptance alongside other predictive pseudo-sciences such as astrology and Feng Shui, but a growing number of celebrities including Prince, Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) and Winona Ryder are using humble digits to interpret personalities, to explain current events, or even to predict the future. Colin Baker of the Numerology Association reports a recent surge in interest in all things digital. His members are regularly called to radio and TV studios on auspicious dates, including, most recently, 7 July (07/07/07). Consultant member and numerology teacher Sonia Ducie says the ?dramatic? growth in interest in numerology in recent years is a sign of the times. ?When society is going through a crisis, people tend to turn to religion or spirituality for answers,? she says. Ducie also credits the rise of Sudoku with turning many on to the ?power? of numbers. Not... More About: Minds , Poor , Ology , Pele
Theremin - Coolest instrument ever
2007-08-01 15:25:00 The theremin was originally the product of Russian government-sponsored research into proximity sensors. The instrument was invented by a young Russian physicist named Lev Sergeivich Termen (known in the West as Lon Theremin) in 1919, after the outbreak of the Russian civil war. After positive reviews at Moscow electronics conferences, Theremin demonstrated the device to Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin. Lenin was so impressed with the device that he began taking lessons in playing it, commissioned 600 of the instruments for distribution throughout the Soviet Union, and sent Theremin on a trip around the world to demonstrate the latest Soviet technology and the invention of electronic music. Also see theremin world for more information, you can make your own theremin More About: Instrument , Remi

The World's First Photograph
2007-07-26 07:41:00 Louis Daugerre is considered by many to be the inventor of modern photography. On August 19, 1839, Daugerre announced his invention of the daguerreotype process that fixed optical images permanently. But the first successful photographic image, called a heliograph, was captured more than a decade earlier.Historians credit fellow Frenchman Joseph Nicphore Nipce with being the first to permanently capture an optical image. Nipce worked with traditional lithography techniques, but was not an artist himself. So he relied on his talented son to create images for the lithographs. When his son was drafted in 1814 to fight with Napoleon at Waterloo, Niepce was left without an illustrator.Nipce turned his attention to a process called photochemical drawing, using silver salts, and for the next decade he struggled to perfect a primitive form of photo-lithography. Nipce's biggest breakthrough came in 1822, when he created a permanent image by exposing coated pewter plates to a camera ima... More About: Graph
