Burning chilli sparks terror fear

A pot of burning chilli sparked fears of a biological terror attack in central London.Firefighters wearing protective breathing apparatus were called to D'Arblay Street, Soho, after reports of noxious smoke filling the air.Police closed off three roads and evacuated homes following the alert.Specialist crews broke down the door to the Thai Cottage restaurant at 1900 BST on Monday where they discovered the source - a 9lb pot of chillies.The restaurant had been preparing Nam Prik Pao, a red-hot Thai dip which uses extra-hot chillies which are deliberately burnt.But the smell prompted several members of the public to call the emergency services.Alpazan Duven, a Turkish journalist based in the restaurant's building, said: "I was sitting in the office when me and my chief start coughing and I said this was something really dodgy."I looked out of the window and saw people rushing and then we heard the sirens."Supranee Yodmuang, the restaurant supervisor, was above the restaurant when sh...

You may be hard-pressed to recall events after a night of binge drinking, but a new report suggests that low to moderate alcohol consumption may actually enhance memory.?There are human epidemiological data of others indicating that mild [to] moderate drinking may paradoxically improve cognition in people compared to abstention,? says Maggie Kalev, a research fellow in molecular medicine and pathology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand and a co-author of an article in The Journal of Neuroscience describing results of a study she and other researchers performed on rats. ?This is similar to a glass of wine protecting against heart disease, however the mechanism is different.? According to Kalev, it is hard to relate the alcohol the rats consumed to human quantities, but ?based on their blood alcohol levels, the 2.5 percent ethanol diet was equivalent to a level of consumption that does not exceed [the] legal driving limit. Gordon Brown has said he could overturn the recent law allowing pubs in England and Wales to open 24 hours a day.The prime minister said binge-drinking was "unacceptable" and that he would "not hesitate to change policies" if he thought this was necessary. So that new iPod touch that Apple presented last week is pretty nifty, isn't it? And Steve's keynote was pretty entertaining too.Yeah well... there's appears to be quite a few missing features.Podcasts: yes, so it has WiFi and a browser and an online music store... but what about podcasts? You subscribe to podcast in order to get new episodes when they become available. The least I'd expect from a WiFi enabled portable podcast player is to actually get the episodes of the podcasts I'm subscribed too. Not a single word about that......well maybe it is actually there. Maybe Steve just didn't mention it because they haven't found a way to gently rip you off with it, as they're getting ready to do with their iPhone ringtone business! Think about it: you already bought a full length song (at a fairly high price). Now Apple lets you clip out 10 seconds of that song to use as a ring tone. Former triple Formula One motor racing champion Nelson Piquet has been sent to driving awareness school - for repeated speeding and parking offences. The Brazilian lost his licence after racking up too many penalty points. Piquet and his wife Viviane, who also had her licence revoked, must attend a week of lessons to learn good and safe driving conduct, and then pass an exam. Only then will Piquet - F1 champion in 1981, 1983 and 1987 - be allowed back behind the wheel. "I think we have to pay for our mistakes, It's not just a speeding problem, I got tickets for all kinds of reasons, like parking where I shouldn't," Piquet told Brazilian media. It consists of 81 ... all » skydivers in the formation and several video people flying around. It took place over Lake Wales Florida USA just before sunset and has some incredible shots by some incredible video fliers, and a picture-perfect "starburst" break-away.
