The 'Other Games' of Poker: Pot-limit Omaha
2007-02-03 00:47:00 In Europe, the most popular poker variant isn't Texas hold'em, despite the worldwide media saturation of televised no-limit hold'em events such as the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker. Europeans continue to prefer the drama and action of pot-limit Omaha (or PLO for short) and it is spread live in most casinos across the continent. Though PLO won't be winning a popularity contest over hold'em anytime soon on this side of the pond, it is game with a rapidly growing player base online, as no-limit hold'em players looking for a change of pace are turning to PLO as a second game with increasing frequency. More live PLO games are also popping up on the Las Vegas strip, including a $2-$5 game that goes of frequently at the Wynn and a nightly $60 buy-in tournament at the Paris Las Vegas. Though it has some of the highest variance of any poker form out there and is often cited as an "action game," pot-limit Omaha is a serious mental challenge as well. I once heard a play... 'High Stakes Poker' Better Than Ever
2007-02-03 00:47:00 After two highly successful seasons on GSN (formerly the Game Show Network), people may have been wondering what could make the highly popular poker program 'High Stakes Poker ' better than its first two years. Through the first three episodes of the new season (airing at 9PM ET, with repeats through the week), "High Stakes Poker" has taken their winning formula and definitely improved on it. The basics of the show are simple: take the greatest players in the game, have them bring in their own cash (ranging from $100,000 to $1 million) and play a No Limit Texas Hold 'Em cash game over a three day span. Part of what has made "HSP3" is the cast of characters that have come to the felt to battle it out. Players such as Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein and Jennifer Harman have been involved with all three seasons of the show, but the "new" players that they have brought in each year has added some spice to the program. In the first year, it was "amateurs" (if you can call someone who ... More About: Take , Ever , Better
EU Fires Back At U.S., Hints at Challenge to UIGEA
2007-02-03 00:47:00 While the announcement of last week's pending World Trade Organization decision against the United States means little in the short term concerning online poker, statements recently made by a high-ranking European Union official suggest that the United States and the UIGEA will face growing challenges in international venues. EU Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy commented on recent U.S. actions on Tuesday, accusing the U.S. of protectionist measures in violation of established treaties. "In my view," stated McCreevy, at the European Parliament in Brussels, "it is probably a restrictive practice and we might take it up in another [forum]." McCreevy ruled out bringing forward a piece of "harmonized legislation" encompassing online gambling within the EU, recognizing that the issue remains a matter of debate within several EU member countries. Instead, McCreevy focused on the nature of the recent U.S. moves. "In order to protect, I'd say, their industry there," referring... More About: Back , Fire , Challenge , Fires , Hall

Risk Management
2007-02-01 01:22:00 Risk Mana gement An effective risk management program is much more than conducting police records checks or putting policies in place Risks are analyzed, considering likelihood and impact, as a basis for determining how they should be managed. Risks are assessed on an inherent and a residual basis. Management selects risk responses – avoiding, accepting, reducing, or sharing risk – developing a set of actions to align risks with the entity’s risk tolerances and risk appetite.Relevant information is identified, captured, and communicated in a form and timeframe that enable people to carry out their responsibilities. Effective communication also occurs in a broader sense, flowing down, across, and up the entity. More About: Risk Management , Men , Risk

Silence is golden in poker etiquetteNBC's "POKER After Dark"
2007-01-15 04:06:01 Silence is golden in poker etiquetteNBC's "POKER After Dark " features six great poker players in a $20,000 buy-in, winner-take-all tournament, which is broken down into 5 days of play. I'm compelled to say that I'm embarrassed by my bratlike conduct in the first-ever episode, which featured a classic, 7-minute-long "Phil Hellmuth tirade," but it did make for some pretty darn good television. My tablemates for my explosion were World Champion of Poker Huck Seed, three-time World Poker Tour winner Gus Hansen, Annie Duke, Shawn "The Sheik" Sheikhan, and Steve Zolotow. Why did I lose my cool? Simply because I asked my tablemates to "Please be quiet for a moment" - during a key hand - and they continued to talk. If my tablemates did in fact go on talking after I asked for silence, then Tournament Directors Association rules they would be assessed a 20-minute penalty, and be forced to hold their tongues and/or leave the room.I wanted a ruling from show producer, and longtime poker player... 2007-01-15 04:06:01 Play it smooth with pocket acesTo win a really big pot in a game of No Limit Texas Hold'em, you'll often have to set a trap for your opponents, especially if they are good players. That's because most solid players won't go broke in a typical hand unless they have a strong hand themselves, or you've done a good job of fooling them.Let's look at how you can set traps with the most exciting hand before the flop -- pocket aces -- using an effective play known as "smooth calling." Smooth calling describes an action where a player just calls an opponent's raise rather than reraising it. By smooth calling with your pocket aces, you conceal the strength of your hand, which often turns into extra bets later. Check out these situations:You and two other players are in the hand. The opponent to your right raises, you smooth call, and the last player makes an aggressive reraise. He'll figure that since you just smooth called the initial raise, he has you beat and only has to worry abou... More About: Play , With , Real , Pocket , Really

2007-01-15 04:06:01 If you read my previous post you know that i had a bit of a close call with a very large truck a couple of days ago.Well my daughter is in her first year of driving and already has fears of driving near transport trucks. So i did some searching for her.Well Geico has some very good information online about safe driving for teens. They even have "Teens and Trucks" in thier online library of safe driving materials for teen drivers. They also offer excellent tips like, Stay out of a truck's blind spots or "No Zones"and Avoid "Squeeze Play" when a large truck needs to make a wide turn. I know for those of us who have been driving a long time these are common sense things but im sure many teens dont know.I always thought Geico looked like a pretty good automobile insurance company and after seeing how much effort they put in to having safe driving tips and other safety tips on thier website i respect them even more now.You can even get quotes and insurance right online. Thank God for quick reflexes
2007-01-12 04:04:01 I had a hell of a scare this morning on my way to work. Was on a 4 lane highway on my way to Brantford from Guelph. Was cruising along at about 115 kph and enjoying my coffee and some good tunes on the local classic rock station.Got behind a 18 wheeler and he was going a bit slow so i pulled in to the right lane to pass him.He was probably cruising at about 100 kph so i was slowly over taking him at my 110 -115.When i was about half way past him the shit hit the fan.I swear i havent been that freaked out in years .The truck driver obviously wasnt paying attention to the road in front of him and i think we both noticed at about the same time that there was a car STOPPED DEAD in his lane about 100 or so feet in front of him.No brake lights or turn signal so i figure the damn thing must have died right there. Now that i have had time to think about it i realize the guy had to choose between 3 things1. Best Players of 2007
2007-01-05 10:00:06 The poker world of 2006 offered more high-dollar tournaments than in any year previous. Each month, it seemed, there were anywhere from three to five $10,000 buy-in events. This made it very difficult for not only the professionals in poker to determine where to play, but also forced the "unknowns" of the poker community to have to decide where they wanted to go as well. Thus, the world of poker in 2006 brought many names to the forefront, some perhaps surprisingly. The following nine men displayed exceptional poker skills over the course of 2006 and, in doing so, made the year the best in poker history. While there is plenty of room for debate (feel free to leave your comments at the bottom of this story), in my opinion, these players made the most noise over the past twelve months. 1. Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi - After his outstanding poker play in 2005, many people might have wondered how "The Grinder" could top it. He did it by putting together a year that surpassed his 200... More About: Players , Play , Player , Best , Layer
Europe deals gambling sector a strong hand
2007-01-05 10:00:06 From MSNBCAny day now the Italian government is expected to show its hand on gambling. In a move viewed by many in the sector as the latest evidence of a shift towards the liberalisation of gambling in Euro pe , Rome will award new gaming licences to a range of national and international companies vying for the chance to run betting shops, kiosks, casinos and online services. The closely watched decision comes as governments, which have traditionally viewed gambling as an activity on the margins of acceptablity, are taking a closer interest in the sector because of the wider access to gaming brought about by advances in technology. With the Spanish regions poised to follow Italy in licensing online and onshore gaming, and a critical decision in Germany also expected imminently, operators are increasingly bullish about the prospects of attracting new customers in undeveloped markets.Europe's ?50bn ($65bn) betting market has become even more critical to the sector since the end of Septem... USA players , use your Party points while you still can
2006-12-11 09:43:02 Since Party Poker's decision to no longer allow American players to play on the site came down in October, many of their customers have moved off to sites that take U.S. players. It is unimaginable how many customers cashed out their bankrolls and left PartyPoker but forgot about another important piece of their earnings that they now have a short time to take care of as well. In an e-mail sent to American players PartyPoker stated, on January 16th, that the PartyPoker Store will be shut down. While American players can no longer participate in the action on PartyPoker, their PartyPoints that were earned are still available for usage, although most players have probably forgotten about them. There is a wealth of items that American players can cash in their PartyPoints on before the store shuts down permanently. There are many items available for purchase through the PartyPoker Store from as little as 2,000 PartyPoints to the upper echelons of hundreds of thousands of said points.... Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi Poker Player of the Year ?
2006-12-11 09:43:02 After eleven months of battle ranging around the world, the Poker Play er of the Year race comes down to three tournaments during the month of December. The three tournaments (the Bellagio's Five Diamond World Poker Classic in Las Vegas, the Trump Classic in Atlantic City (both have preliminary events going at this time) and the WSOP Circuit event in Atlantic City (which starts December 9th) are the only ones that will generate the fields (and the points) that one of the contenders for the crown can take down for the POY title. With that said, it could be close to impossible for someone to capture the title other than Mich ael "The Grinder" Mizrachi. Mizrachi, who has held the 2006 POY lead seemingly since the beginning of the year, has dominated the field on his march to December. He picked up some points during the preliminary events of the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods and seems to be in the driver's seat when it comes down to the race. If everything stays status quo at this po... More About: Player
Poker and Playmates: Chris Moneymaker & the Mansion!
2006-12-06 21:40:01 Maybe i was wrongApparently Money maker isnt an idiot after all, lmaoSomewhere on a college campus right now some youngster in a Marketing 101 course is learning that attractive women help to sell products, especially to men. There may be no better source of striking beauty than Play boy and their bunnies. With the enormous majority of poker players being of the male gender, it seems that poker and Playboy would be a natural marriage. Um, perhaps "marriage" is the wrong word to use when speaking about this topic! Well, the 2003 World Series Main Event Champ Chris Moneymaker signed a partnership with Playboy Enterprises as soon as he started his company, Moneymaker Gaming. They started off by producing a line of poker products together, including high-end poker chips with Playmate logos and pictures. Now, Moneymaker is looking to do one better; he's looking to bring you the real thing! He is hoping to trump all of the other poker camps by combining many men's ultimate weekend: poke... The Politics Of Poker Are Effective
2006-12-06 21:40:01 When the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act passed through the Congress and was signed by President Bush in October, the outrage was palpable from every sector of the poker community. The Poker Players Alliance (and several other smaller organizational efforts) rose to inform American poker players and encourage them to take action against those responsible for driving the legislation through the American government. Now, almost two months from the off-year (read: non-Presidential) election later, what has happened and what have we learned from it? The impact for those elected officials has been sizeable, to say the least. The main driver behind the UIGEA, Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa, found a great deal of support from his party members for HR 4411 (the legislation that started the online gaming ban on its path) but found that his constituents didn't think of it as much as they did. Election Night 2006 found him voted out of office. Sen. Bill Frist of Tennessee, who sided with Le... More About: Politics , Effect , Effective , Poli

Toronto Poker Club Robbed, Shots Fired in Police Chase
2006-12-02 15:35:05 An early-morning robbery attempt on a Toronto social-club poker game recently went awry, when police responded to a call-in about the heist in time to locate and chase the robbers' fleeing van. About eighteen players where participating in the overnight game at Toronto's Thornhill Club when two masked, armed robbers burst in at about 4:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, a third waiting in the getaway van behind the club. The two reportedly 'roughed up' the players while relieving the game of its cash and valuables, but someone, likely one of the players, managed to alert police, who responded in time to see the van leaving the area. Having identified the van, trailing officers signaled it to pull over. The van slowed momentarily, seeming to comply, before speeding away. A high-speed chase ensued and moved onto a local freeway, the 401. Here, one of the van's passengers rolled down a window and fired on the pursuing offices, who then broke off the chase; neither officers nor vehicles w... More About: Poker , Police , Shots , Fire

Gordon Wins Live Full Tilt Poker Championship
2006-12-02 15:35:05 Gordon Wins Live Full Tilt Poker Champions hip Tiltboy Wins $600,000 for Finishing FirstThanksgiving Day turned out to be Phil Gordon?s lucky day as he collected $600,000 for finishing first in the FullTilt.Net Championship at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas. With a packed audience that was filled with professional players like Patrik Antonius and Perry Friedman, it was Gordon's aggressive play that helped him beat out six other contenders during the four-hour live broadcast on FSN. With this win, Gordon has once again proved that he is possibly one of the most under-rated professional on the Team Full Tilt roster of players. The first player to exit for the day was four-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner and Main Event fourth place finisher, Allen Cunningham. Well-known for making it deep into numerous tournaments, Cunningham had no such luck when his ace-king ran into John Juanda?s pocket aces.In a theme that would hold strong throughout the competition, recent European Po...
