Big Head Barry and the Indictments
2007-11-16 22:00:00 Well the Feds finally came down on Big Head Barry with four counts of perjury, one count of obstruction of justice and surprisingly with all my hatred of the oversized dome in recent years; I met the news with apathy. I came to the realization near the end of the past season, a season where I did not watch one game of for the first time possibly ever, that aside for maybe Craig Biggio and David Eckstein, I’m pretty sure everyone else is on something. There is a poll right now on ESPN.com asking what should be done with the home run record with options of nothing, asterisk, almost fifty percent of the almost 100,000 responses said they should be stricken from the record books completely.Of course that will never happen and the best anyone can ask for is an asterisk which No Back Bone Bud Selig will be happy to comply. For me I think it should go further and after baseball implements an Olympics style drug testing, complete with B samples for future tests that haven’t been invente... More About: Indictments
Lyrics Quiz: Mystery Theme vol. II
2007-11-15 22:01:00 It has been awhile since I last ran a mystery theme quiz (a year to be exact) so maybe I’ll make November the official mystery theme month. If you guess the theme you will get three extra bonus points and as always you need to put both artist and title in the comments section (along with the theme if you think you know it) and if you are correct I will un-bold it and give you credit. The Lyrics Quiz is for entertainment purposes only so please do not use anything besides your own meandering mind to help you up with the answers. Now onto the quiz:Hints:9. This song also includes the lyric, "Let's get married" which is odd considering the relationship of the two people in this band.Myst ery Theme : I actually thought this would be easier than the last one which was guessed fairly quickly. Oh well. As for a hint, take notice to the individual lyrics specifically.1. Slip inside the eye of your mind, don’t you might find a better place to play. (Don't Look Back in Anger - Oasis; ...
I Had My Heart Beaten Down but I Always Come Back for More
2007-11-15 01:03:00 There is no more annoying phrase in the American lexicon than, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” First, the city stole that phase from every spring breaker. Ever since The Real World set up shop on the Strip, more and more reality shows take place there or make a pit stop for an episode or two there. And in today’s world where everyone has a camera phone and the desire of instant celebrity, rarely does anything actually stay in Vegas. The most egregious example of how things in Vegas don’t necessarily stay in Vegas is the release of Taking Chances from Céline Dion, who, up to recently had been spent the last four years at Caesars Palace entertaining blue-haired woman who needed some rest from pulling the slot machine lever all day. But now she is back to torture the rest of the world outside of Vegas with all her hand waving and weird performance moves. But really the most annoying thing about Dion is that her songs are, for the most part, catchy. Don’t tell me that ... More About: Heart , Back , Always
It’s My Time, Said it’s Time for Me to Shine
2007-11-13 22:00:00 Last year Nas declared Hip-Hop Is Dead. The only problem was that the album was in fact proof that hip-hop wasn’t dead. Yeah ring tone rappers have watered down the art form, but albums from Common and Kanye West this year has kept the genre afloat. On the other hand, R&B has been on its deathbed for a long time and great R&B albums have been few and far in-between this decade. Even the great ones getting little airplay instead radio spent more time to R&B artists who excel more at dancing than singing with tracks that sound more like hip-hop beats than something coming out of Motown or Stax. One of the few R&B artists that manage to have soul and still have commercial appeal is Alicia Keys. This may be in part that she still infuses the use of hip-hop beats like her contemporaries, but the bases of her music is still primarily the piano which leads to a mix of hip hop and classical with Keys’ heartfelt and introspective lyrics overtop. Her first two albums, which... More About: Time , Shine
The Best New Shows of 2007
2007-11-12 22:06:00 At the beginning of the television season you were bombarded with a bunch of “Best Of” and “Must Watch” shows even though it is a little unfair to judge a show by one episode. For instance last year had you asked me at the beginning of the season, Friday Night Lights wasn’t even on my radar, yet a month later it was my favorite show of the new season. With that in thought I brought together some TV Bloggers to see what are the best new shows of the season now that we are a good month into the new season. Here is the list that I came up with after placing the votes into an algorithm that would make the dudes from The Big Bang Theory blush. You can catch up by streaming the shows, or downloading them on iTunes and/or Amazon Unbox:1. Pushing Daisies - ABC (8) - Stream2. Chuck - NBC (2) - Stream - iTunes - Unbox3. Dirty Sexy Money - ABC - Stream4. The Big Bang Theory - CBS - Stream - iTunes - Unbox5. Gossip Girl - CW - Stream - iTunes - Unbox6. Aliens in America - CW - Stream ...
It Seems the Wars Will Never End but We’ll Make it Home Again
2007-11-11 22:22:00 Typically I take holidays off, but it seemed wrong to just sit on the couch on Veterans Day when future veterans are currently fighting in harms way. What makes thing worse this year was a report that came out earlier this week that, despite only making up eleven percent of the population, one in four homeless people are veterans (source: MSNBC). This is just unacceptable. I guess something like this happens when the past fifteen years our commander in chief was someone who wouldn’t fight, but did everything in their or their dad’s power to get out of fighting (you may want to keep that in mind the next time you choose your president). I am not one to write my representative, but I had to point this figure out to him and I hope you do so with your own.So I would like to personally thank servicemen and woman past and present for fighting for the security of out. I have featured this song before, but there is no more fitting song for today than John Legend’s Coming Come. Here’... More About: Wars , Home , Make

2007-11-10 22:00:00 Quote of the Week: Are you asking me on a date Williams? (Tim Riggins, Friday Night Lights)Song of the Week: Lucky Man - The Verve (Journeyman)Big News of the Week: NBC’s Green Week: Boy, was that annoying especially the solid green logo instead of the regular transparent one. And it looked like the shows themselves didn’t care for being forced to have an environmental show either with Chuck openly mocking it twice this week. The best though, and by best I mean worse, was when Sylar said something like, my character tries to destroy the world but I want to save it. This is what happens when the writers go on strike, folks. I Want My Music Television vol. X
2007-11-09 22:00:00 There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I though I’d give them some love since the death of Music al Television left a void for a forum on the art form so here they are courtesy of YouTube. I advise you to watch them before you read my reviews if you don’t want me to spoil things. If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.Long Road to Ruin - Foo FightersNice to see the Foo Fighters back to their quirky way after the more politically charged The Pretender video. It doesn’t seem like a real Foo Fighters video without Dave Grohl in a mustache. And was hallucinating or was there a banner ad at the begging at the video? It’s enough that NBC fill the bottom third of their shows three times an episode for that unwatchable Phenomenon show, but now we ... More About: My Music , C Television
Press Release: Man vs Wild
2007-11-08 22:09:00 Just to show you how old I’ve become, when commercials come on while I am watching television I no longer instinctively flip to MTV, VH1 or G4, but instead find myself surfing to the History Cannel, MSNBC, and the Discovery Channel. So tomorrow while NBC is showing those self-serving Go Green ads (isn’t NBC owned by GE that would benefit greatly if everyone went out and bought their energy efficient products?) during Friday Night Lights, I’ll switching over to the Discover Channel to see bits of the second season premiere of Man vs. Wild . For those that have never seen the show, it follows this clinically insane dude Bear Grylls who gives survival trips in the field.Although what I really want to see is the cameramen turn the cameras on themselves because while Bear is stuck drinking is own urine for hydration, or these dudes just filming it with a traveling oasis of fresh cool water and sandwiches or are they going through some hardships aside from the weather and elements? The Years Passed and Mankind Became Stupider at a Frightening Rate
2007-11-07 22:05:00 Idiocracy may not be a word you have ever heard before but all you really need to know is it was conceived by Mike Judge, the mind that brought you the subversive Beavis and Butt-Head and the brilliantly funny Office Space as well as the watchable King of the Hill. The plot of the movie is pretty ingenious as Judge notices that dumber people are breeding at a higher rate while the smarter people tend to wait, sometimes to the point that it ends up being too late. At this rate, Judge theorizes that this will lead to the dumbing down of America that will make the Paris Hilton-obsessed of today look like Rhodes Scholars in comparison. The story starts off in present day with your average Joe, quite literally as his name is Joe and he is completely average in every way, in Luke Wilson (Legally Blonde) picked for his averageness for a military experiment to see if they can keep soldiers alive for future wars. Since they didn’t have a comparable female in the army, the military pays a pi... More About: Mankind , Years , Rate
Scooter McGavin’s Solution to the Writer’s Strike
2007-11-06 22:00:00 In a story I broke this weekend, the Writer’s Guild has gone on strike an quite frankly, I could care less. Well that was until I came up with a solution to keep some of the shows on the air: Hire scabs, and by hire scabs I mean hire me to write for your shows. Best case scenario I can take a sinking ships like Heroes (and shows that have yet to get afloat like Bionic Woman) and turn them around. Worst case scenario the shows continue their downward spiral they were already on. And even then there can be some positive can come out of it because you can film my debacle for a reality show that you can air instead of repeats. Before you laugh at my proposition to write for a show, let me mention that I wrote three well received short plays in college as well as rewrote a play I was in that also happened to land me a Best Actor award. So in addition to writing I could also up the great acting quota on a show like Heroes (which definitely needs it) where I could be, for instance, Elle... More About: Scooter , Strike , Solution
Fool Me Once, Shame on You; Fool Me Ten Times…
2007-11-05 23:05:00 As I mentioned this weekend, the internet was all a buzz last week when the new broke that a Joss Whedon produced, Eliza Dushku staring show Dollhouse was announced. I too got excited but only for about a half a second because I saw the show was being created for Fox. Long time readers to the 9th Green know I have not watched anything on the network since the series finale of Arrested Development (fun fact: the same year Arrested Development got canceled, The War at Home got renewed for a second season by Fox). And since it is on Fox, everything about this show screams that it will not see a second season. In fact if this were Over/Under and I were Commissioner Statboy, I would make the line a Wilbon special at 3.5 episodes before the show is cancel (feel free to let me know if you would take the over or the under). But maybe I should look at this like Marshall and break out a legal pad and make a list of pros and cons to watching Dollhouse:Pros- Joss Whedon- Eliza Dushku- Tim Minear... More About: Fool , Shame

2007-11-04 21:00:00 Quote of the Week: Like Jane Goodall observing the apes, I initially saw their interactions as confusing and unstructured, but patterns emerged. 2007-11-03 22:09:00 Recently a bunch of television bloggers and I got together to share some of our favorite links from our sites with our readers (I am currently seeing how many Lou Bega references t takes before I am excommunicated). I will eventually end up incorporating this into my weekly 57 Channels segment, but I thought I would introduce it first plus I burned my main hunt and peck finger a typing finger so I doing this would limit some typing. You will notice a bunch of posts dedicated to the writer’s strike and the new Joss Whedon show but I haven’t written about either because I have yet to decide which story I care less about. So until I do so, feel free to check out the links below.BuzzSugar: We reminisced about My So-Called Life and wondered how well everyone remembers it. We mulled over the current state of Heroes. You Gots to Believe up in Quest
2007-11-02 00:17:00 Above is the unofficial Mt. Rushmore of new school hip hop circa 1993 and if you can name just ten of the rappers above we can be friends. Just the cover art alone could get Midnight Marauders into the Scooter Hall of Fame but the seminal A Tribe Called Quest album is more than worthy on the music as one of the greatest hip-hop album of all time. The group’s first two albums were great in their own rights, but were still rough around the edges as the group, still teenagers at the time, were still finding themselves. Midnight Marauders is when the group came into their own and grew musically and emotionally. They have always been jazz based, but they took the beats to a new level on the disk with Award Tour, Midnight, and Electric Relaxation still ranking as three of the groups best.As for the emotional point, here is where A Tribe Called Quest became more socially conscience dedicating a song to apartheid activist with Steve Biko (Stir it Up), called out a Sucka Nigga, and the Tour...
Musings From the Back 9: 90's Disposable Pop Edition Part 2
2007-10-31 21:00:00 In a story I broke yesterday, 90’s disposable pop is back. We learned that with the Britney Spears Blackout (see Part 1), she should have stayed in the 90’s. Today it is the kings of disposable pop, the Back street Boys, attempt to be relevant almost a decade after their heyday. And while we are talking disposable 90’s pop, a happy birthday today to Rob van Winkle himself, Vanilla Ice. On a completely unrelated note, a melancholy happy trails to Robert Goulet.Unbreakable - Backstreet BoysThe new Backstreet Boys album Unbreakable is notable as it is the first from the group as a quartet. One can assume the fifth one is too busy hosting Don’t Forget the Lyrics or something to be bothered with recording. But it is not like the group is Boyz II Men who are losing a tenor; the Backstreet Boys all basically just sing the melody anyways except when the weird one does some vocal gymnastics at the end of the song.Unlike Britney Spears who thinks she could still make relevant dance mus... Musings from the Back 9: 90’s Disposable Pop Edition
2007-10-30 21:00:00 Back in 1999 there were no two bigger acts than Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. They had the top two selling albums that year along with two of the top five biggest singles. Britney was eventually showed up by Christina Aguilera who could actually sing while the Backstreet Boys were forgotten during the crappy pseudo-punk era of this decade. While most of the rest of their ilk have moved on to movies, Broadway, reality shows, or just obscurity, both Britney and the Boys are still trying to hang on to those late nineties hey-day by dropping albums today.Blackout - Britney SpearsOn a remix of Jadakiss’ Why, Common pondered, “Why they hype Britney up, they know she cant sing?” The simple answer was she could sell albums. Back when she was the number one pop princess she got the best songwriters, producers, and chorographer and elaborate stage shows. But all those people a currently working with the likes of Rihanna and the Pussycat Dolls. So instead of working with someon... More About: Musings , Back , Edition , Sings
First Impressions: Nip/Tuck
2007-10-29 21:00:00 The good people over at FX were kind enough to hook me up with the first two episodes of Nip/Tuck but before I get into the review of what I have seen a little breakdown of the post just in case you want to avoid anything you do not want to know. The first couple paragraphs will be a quick synopsis to get you caught up on the happenings of McNamara/Troy with some mild thematic and casting spoilers of the first episode that premieres tomorrow at 10:00 on FX. If you hate spoilers you may want to come back after you have seen the first episode. I will also clearly mark when I talk about the second episode. You have been warned. As I have stated before, I have shied away from Nip/Tuck because I have a low threshold for blood and have been told that the surgery scenes are extremely graphic despite hearing good thing about the show. Because Tonight the World Turned in Me
2007-10-27 22:00:00 You may best remember Jimmy Eat World from their huge hit earlier this decade, The Middle. Unfortunately fore some that will be your only memory of Jimmy Eat World even though they are one of the great rock bands of the past ten years. Unlike the fellow emo bands they get lumped in, they are not as uber-depressing enough for the shoe gazers that are into that scene, but haven’t recorded something that has been as accessible to the soccer moms as The Middle. With their fifth album, Chase This Light, it looks like the group is doing their best to open themselves up to a wider audience by bringing in Butch Vig, who produce some of the biggest alternative albums of the early nineties before becoming the drummer for Garbage, to polish their latest album. And more polished it does sound. The opening song Big Casino is the loudest song on the album with a layered guitar crunch, but doesn’t come close to the bombast of previous rocker like Pain from the last album. That is followed by Let... Feed Your iPod vol. IX: Nothing at All
2007-10-26 22:04:00 Earlier this month, Santana released a greatest hits album, Ultimate Santana with an auspicious track list that may or may not have been compiled by monkeys. Seriously, the song with Steven Tyler is included? Two versions of The Game of Love? Two appearances by the dude from Nickleback? But anyways. Unfortunately my favorite song in Santana’s recent grab random singers catalogue was not included on the hits package: Nothing at All with Musiq Soulchild from the Shaman album. Now if I were ever to audition for some lame national karaoke contest, this would be the song I would sing. Fun fact: the song was written by Rob Thomas (of Matchbox Twenty fame, not Veronica Mars). You know a song is a hidden gem when there is only one YouTube video featuring the song. Here’s to You Hairbrush Singers and Dashboard Drummers
2007-10-23 22:06:00 Despite being a ratings juggernaut, American Karaoke has failed to launch that many careers after the karaokers have to start singing there own music. In six seasons only Kelly Clarkson has been able to produce two hit albums, although two may be her shelf life as her third album has bombed and her concert downgraded due to lack of sales. But on the bright side for Kelly, this moves her one step closer to hanging out with Topanga in the Surreal Life house.Hoping to join her in the former karaoker two hit club is Carrie Underwood, whose first album Some Hearts (see my review: Oh, There’s Nothing Like Oklahoma) recently overtook Clarkson’s Breakaway as the highest selling post-karaoke album ever. But again, don’t feel too bad for Clarkson because she will soon get to bunk with Skee-Lo. And considering CMT recently devoted six straight hours of playing her new video for So Small, a second hit album is on the way.Where the first album seemed to alternate between country and pop so... Oddsmakers: Who Is Under the Hoodie
2007-10-22 22:00:00 It really isn’t a good sign for Heroes when people are spending more talking about how boring this season is then debating who the black hooded sweatshirt person who shoved Sulu over the building was (is it Adam Sandler, Bill Belichicken, the Unabomber?) which I am assuming is the big whodidit of the season. But with the first appearance of Kristen Bell tonight, of which I am equally excited for (because its Veronica Mars) and dreading (because its Veronica Mars reciting horrible dialogue surrounded by bad actors), I thought I would throw the show a bone and run down the odds of who could be killing off The Company members one by one. Even though anything is possible in this show, I think it is safe to say since they are nowhere near New York City that you can rule out the Bennett’s, the Wonder Twins and Syler, but I think almost everyone else could be a suspect. Go ahead and place your bets in the comment section*.The Invisible Man (1000:1) - The hooded person seemed to disappe...
Only Love Can Make it Rain
2007-10-21 23:00:00 When you are given the nickname Scooter McGavin you are required to enjoy anything by Adam Sandler. Sandler has made this easy by making movies that are essentially the same where he plays some sort of buffoon who screams and breaks things while being, or being surrounded by, sophomoric morons. Even his much touted serious role in Punch-Drunk Love didn’t deviate that far from the formula. On the other hand Reign Over Me was truly Sandler’s chance at a serious role where he plays a former dentist who has shut himself off from the world after his wife, three daughters and dog were on one of the planes that crashed into the Twin Towers. Yeah, the role did call for Sandler to scream a couple times, but instead the screaming came from a place of pain, not for comic effect of a raving buffoon. But the movie really belongs to Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda) as Sandler’s college roommate who has since lost touch with him after graduation even after trying to get in touch with him after Septe... He May Be Mellow, He May Be Kind
2007-10-19 22:00:00 For those of you that like Amy Winehouse but can do without all the cursing, the creepy beehive, and the imminent drug overdose, I have an artist for you: Sharon Jones. Much like Winehouse, Sharon sounds like an old, overweight black lady, but unlike Winehouse she actually is an old overweight black lady, and if we have learned anything from Aretha Franklin, the amount of soul someone is directly proportional to their waistline. The similar sounds to the two artists are thanks to the Dap-Kings, the backing band for Jones who also appeared on Winehouse’s Back in Black thanks to their new found friend Mark Ronson. But Where back to Black sounded like a retro ode to sixties soul tunes, the third album from Jones and the boys, 100 Days, 100 Nights sounds like it come out of the Stax recording studio. It hard to say who is more valuable on the disk, Jones or the Kings. Jones sings from her soul without having to wave her hand like some of the modern day pop princesses while the Dap-Kings...

More articles from this author:2007-10-19 03:15:00 This has almost inadvertently become A Tribe Called Quest month with a couple of posts dedicated to the seminal rap group (and another on the way), but if any group deserves a month in their honor it would be Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and crew. And if you only have room for one A Tribe Called Quest song on your iPod, Award Tour should be that song. The song is the one that really got me into A Tribe Called Quest. I had appreciation for their first two albums, but for the most part when they came out I was your token annoying suburbanite kid that listened to mostly hardcore gangsta rap. But Midnight Marauders came out right around the time I was widening my musical spectrum and Award Tour had this refreshing jazzy vibe compared to all the P-Funk and James Brown samples coming from the gangsta. The song, which feature fellow Native Tongues members De La Soul on the track and in the video, also taught me an important lesson that, “You can be white and blue but don’t crap the roll.” So give...
