Twelve Girls Band
2007-10-25 05:00:00
By Jonathan Rotsztain     Hailing from the People?s Republic of China, the Twelve Girls Band can only be described as a real treat. This unique act will be at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts this Friday October 26. Bridging the ever-narrower divide between the Occident and the Orient through the power of song, the neatly named ensemble are best known for their haunting takes on American pop classics like Céline Dion?s My Heart Will Go On and Irving Berlin?s White Christmas mixed with classic Chinese fare and flare. Playing traditional Chinese instruments like the guzheng, the yangqin, the pipa, the erhu and flutes, the Girls are going places. read more

Dateless In Toronto
2007-10-23 14:20:00
You might be wondering where I?ve gone on dates. You might be thinking my recent disappearance from the column has meant that I was swooped up, up and away, to the most exotic location, or in a hot air balloon for two, or a helicopter ride, or even on a weekend getaway to somewhere with sand, and sun, and mojitos. I wish. To my fans, thank you for the emails, but no, I have not eloped. I am not secretly pregnant and overcome with sudden event planning stresses for my secret wedding to my billionaire husband, who is the prince of some remote island off the coast of somewhere too elite to discuss. And I have not finally been convinced by the man of my dreams that he and I should go somewhere? anywhere? and explore the obvious chemistry between us. read more

The Dyke Does Steers and Queers
2007-10-23 01:58:00
Rating: (3/4 Flags) Welcome to the roughest, toughest Queer event in Toronto. A few months ago, down at the Dakota Tavern, the first Steers and Queers event was put on for a lark: and surprise, surprise the Queers came. After all, aren?t most inventions and ideas discovered by accident? Plus, I am of the opinion that Toronto?s Queer community is always hungry from some fresh blood, so to speak, and this event is certainly a case of ?if you build it, they will come?! And so Toronto is the beginning of the Freak Flag Parties. read more

The Romance Route
2007-10-21 00:31:00
If you really stop to think about it romance, or at least what we have come to know as such, has come a long way. While I suppose nobody can be certain of its actual age, I like to believe it?s been in action long before the days Romeo was climbing Juliet?s terrace. For all we know when a Caveman didn?t drag his woman back to the lair by her hair and instead by the hand could have been considered romance. Then again the whole dragging by hair thing could today also be referred to as kinky. No judgment. read more

Justice, Zombies and Porn
2007-10-17 00:43:00
By Jonathan Rotsztain Please go on a date with me. I would like you to take me out to dinner and treat me nice. Our hands might brush up against each other?s as we take a relaxing walk and we?ll get lost in each other?s eyes. The conversation will be pleasant and the tension palpable. We?ll exchange fitness tips and ex horror stories. We?ll talk about our feelings and I?ll be a good and attentive listener, offering you advice and most of all support and comfort. Then, maybe, we?ll make-out, just a little bit. But really, if you?re planning on showing me a good time this weekend you?ll need the following three things: Justice , Porn and Zombies . read more
Males versus Females?Tips for the Unaware (cont'd)
2007-10-14 22:15:00
Well the time has arrived for the ladies to remove their stilettos and step into the shoes of our lovable men. As much as I used to convince myself that men and women are not emotionally equal, after much strenuous research and observation, I have concluded that men, do in fact, have feelings too. Now some women may disagree, which is probably rooted from some bitterness of past bad experiences with men, however, next time you are with a male acquaintance you should ask them about love. I can guarantee they have experienced at least one case of heartbreak, along with the waterworks, with a past lover who shattered their tender hearts. Interestingly enough, I am currently taking a Gender Studies course and we were discussing that men and women are in fact identical, but society socializes them to fit specific roles and attitudes that either sex should follow according to. read more

The Hottest Tricks for Your Treat
2007-10-14 01:01:00
by Anthony Petur Anyone who knows me well knows that I love me some scary and if I had my way this Halloween I?d be starring in a horror movie. It being the season of spooky and all I was compelled recently to watch an old movie of my own I made in school. Sadly I found it more hilarious than scary but it did get me thinking?why do I love it so? And why is being scared so damn good? Thanks in part to a wise and close Therapist compari of mine it appears the answer is actually quite simple?adrenaline. There is nothing like the rush of adrenaline pumping through your body and mind when you feel like you?re about to get the scare of a lifetime or having just had one. It?s electric, ebullient and what?s more is that its effects can cause quite the stir in?the coffin. I?ll let you interpret that as you may but let?s just say I?m not only referring to Dracula here. read more

God Made Me Funky and the New Groove Orchestra
2007-10-12 09:29:00
By Jonathan Rotsztain This Friday October 12 a special event comes to Revival Nightclub (783 College St.): namely the God Made Me Funky Toga Party. First a little bit about God Made Me etc. Hailing from our very own Love in Toronto, this 10-member Nu Funk ensemble has assembled to share their twangy blend of funk, soul, hip-hop and R&B for over a decade. Including a former member of Len (cf. You Steal My Sunshine) and of Snow?s entourage (cf. Informer), God Made etc. has energy, charisma and a titular track all about how God Made them Funky. With a solid track record, including a NNNN review from NOW Magazine, the hard working God etc. are poised to make it big with airplay on CBC Radio 3, an appearance in the 18th direct-to-video American Pie film (I think this one?s called Stiffler?s Funeral) and a video in rotation on bubblegum station MuchMusic. me, you, and a pumpkin or two
2007-10-12 09:12:00
If it?s all right with you, I?d like to paint you a picture. Close your eyes, and imagine: The wind, gently rustling the leaves on the trees ? reds, yellows, greens, and oranges, beautiful fall colours filling the large maples and oaks. Browned leaves fluttering towards the ground, forming piles that are just yearning to be frolicked through. You?re wearing a large, cozy over-sized hand-knit sweater, with some sort of appropriate northern Ontario-based animal etched into it (read: Deer? Moose? Opossum? Your cheeks are a slight, rosy pink, flushed with the excitement of your company, but also with the slight Autumn chill in the air. The perfect weather, the perfect moments? And finding the perfect pumpkin. Okay, enough of that. But what is better on a beautiful Autumn afternoon, then heading to the local pumpkin patch and having some harvest merriment? ?Local pumpkin patches?? You repeat, perplexed. In downtown Toronto? Not as far-fetched as you might think. Che...

Holidays are that time in relationships where it gets a little tricky. Of course, spending time with family is the ultimate goal (most of the time) ? or at least with some close friends ? but you have to add in this new relationship, too. Here comes all of the options: Celebrate it together? Apart? His house? Her house? Dad?s? Grandma?s? I mean, one can only have so many Thanksgiving dinners, right? The Big Thanksgiving Dinner ? 3 Key Tips on Climbing the Family Tree.
2007-10-06 19:38:00
-by Anthony Petur For some Thanksgiving is one of the best times of year. Another long weekend, rest, relaxation, drinks and that special guest star Turkey and his entourage of cranberry, stuffing, peach, apple and pumpkin pie. (Alright, so I have a little something for pie, by now that shouldn?t surprise you) Yes, it?s a blissful time when many families re-unite from their busy lives and far away locations to sit down together in one place give thanks and catch up. At least that?s the family channel edit. In my reality while Thanksgiving does involve delicious food, drinks, laughter and sometimes rest, it also at some point usually entails embarrassing moments, a headache or two from the loudness or my attempts to get a word in over the banter and of course?the possible addition of another chair around the coveted family table. read more

Randomland at Circa
2007-10-05 20:33:00
By Jonathan Rotsztain Normally, I wouldn?t recommend you going anywhere near Richmond Street on a weekend night. Clubland ? the annoying, expensive and often violent area between University and Bathurst and Queen and King ? is home to such infamous mainstays as Inside Lounge, Century Room, Steam Nightclub, etc, etc, ad nauseam which provide generic entertainment to Toronto?s masses (most of whom actually live in the 905). Trash talk aside, Clubland is entering a new era of entertainment with the opening of Randomland at Circa . read more
The Dyke Does Daybreak
2007-10-05 01:15:00
Rating: 3/4 Looking for a quick breakfast to fit into a busy day, my partner Kara and I headed down to Church and Carlton to Daybreak. With a proud rooster as their logo it seems supremely appropriate for Daybreak to be known as the great breakfast nook located across from Zippers. Once inside the homey, sunrise-coloured restaurant, we were ushered to a large pine table that gave the feeling we were tucking in for a meal in a big kitchen. Since I've already enjoyed their satisfying all-day-breakfasts, I set my sights on something different. read more

by Anthony Petur Have you ever imagined what a night?s possibilities could entail if there was no predetermined close to it? Have you ever wished that just once the city would cease from fading into the shadows after last call and instead open itself up into a city that refused to sleep? If so, then brace yourself because tonight your desires will not only be heard, but unleashed into a cabaret of art, sight, senses and choices, all in which will be stretched way past the city?s usual bedtime. The Dyke Does The Tokyo Grill
2007-09-21 12:46:00
Rating: 2/4 Flags Toronto is a city full of treasures just waiting to be found. Places that would only reveal themselves to you at ground level while winding your way down a busy street packed with a thousand narrow restaurants and business, blending into a mosaic of opportunities waiting to be experienced. When on a lunch break a friend of mine and I strode into The Tokyo Grill on Yonge. It however did not seem to be that kind of treasure. In Toronto there are also run down, neglected and dirty places that one can discover just as easily. On first impression my friend and I agreed that The Tokyo Grill felt like a hole in the wall, with a very large pride flag flapping above it. read more
