Oh God Here I Go: Excavating The EXcess
2007-08-13 00:41:00
While the lover goes out and about with their day, I stay in bed feeling nauseous from the partying the night before.  It?s easy to seek out blame as to why I?m running to the bathroom every twenty minutes, but I know for a fact it wasn?t the food at Hair Of The Dog. It was one of those close-knit looking restaurant that we?d always pass by and tell ourselves ?we should go there sometime? I wasn?t duped by the crazy romantic lighting this time, it was the hummus appetizer that won me over. Advertisement: read more

Age ain?t nothing but a number
2007-08-12 06:02:00
Well in this day and age, cupid seems to have targeted his love arrows at just about anyone. Relationships come in all sorts of sizes, colours, sexual orientations, and ages as well. Now typically the norm is men being older than women in a heterosexual relationship, but it seems as though an age revolution has occurred and crossed boundaries with its ?no age-limit policy?.  It has become more common to notice older women dating younger men, but what reasons would trigger going backwards in age for a scrumptious young male tart? (Releasing) The Ghosts of Chemistry
2007-08-11 08:53:00
A few months ago I was offered a golden opportunity to save myself from something that was already well on the tracks to insanity and confusion. It was night, there was arguing, alcohol, intensity and for a split second whether it was intuition or better sense pounding on my left shoulder, I did in fact hear those words "walk away now and don't look back." But I didn't. Advertisement: read more

Get out and Walk
2007-08-11 01:28:00
You know the funny thing is that I have been battling my weight for most of my life. In the last few years with the onset of my anxiety things took a turn for the worse. I was put on medication after having not slept for 48 hours after contracting a nasty virus. Unfortunately, one of the side effects of the medication was an increase in appetite which the doctor warned me about. However, I was not expecting to feel like I was pregnant again and start eating everything in site. It to so bad that family and friends started to comment and that made me feel even worse. The Dyke Does the St. Jamestown Delicatessen
2007-08-11 00:17:00
By Kelly Wilk Rating 2/4 Flags: OR 2/4 Cabbagetown Flags: Strolling once again in Cabbagetown my partner and I came across a charming looking Butcher shop called St. Jamestown Steak & Chops with a Deli catessen next door. Sources from Toronto Life said this small-scale wonder has been in operation since 1971 and I was told that it now belongs to the son of the previous owner. Wandering through the shop our eyes were treated to the sight of fresh and colourful vegetables, cheese, stacks of dry goods and some excellent looking cuts of organic meat. It was enough to make you want to have a B.B.Q. Advertisement: read more

film/dvd review: "pan's labyrinth" directed by guillermo del toro
2007-08-10 06:54:00
AT THE CINEMA With Ron Boyer ***** Pan's Labyrinth (2006). If you're curious, but haven't seen it yet, now is the time to enjoy one of the truly outstanding films of the last year, recently released on DVD. Directed by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (No, not Benicio del Toro, the actor-the other one!), Pan's Labyrinth was my favorite film last year. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film , Pan's Labyrinth lost out to the equally brilliant and socially-relevant drama The Lives of Others, arguably the two most important films of 2006. Dark Prince I Beseech You I am the god of hell fire, and I bring you Fire, I'll take you to burn Fire, I'll take you to learn I'll see you burn ?Lord of Chaos, lend me your ear as I cut it off. Let the blood rain down, spoil and rot. This epoch will be for you my lord. This era will be for our new love.? Sound familiar? Um? There are lots of paths to true love and there is no good or bad way of getting there. You do what makes you happy, what fulfills you, regardless of what friends or family may think. That?s what love is all about: abandon ? giving yourself to another, transcending race, class or expectations for something purer with your partner. Fulfilling your biological and emotional function isn?t always easy though. Mr. Right probably doesn?t hit up the bar scene on a regular basis and you?re not necessarily going to meet Her in the supermarket aisle. What?s a dreamer to do? Yet once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right. T...

i love my garden as much as you love your boyfriend
2007-08-09 17:36:00
I do. I really do. I get a rush of excitement, my cheeks flush, and my heart beats fast when I step towards my rows of glorious produce. By 'garden', I mean one kind: the kind filled with vegetables. (Except for my lovely sunflowers (that's one on the left!)... Otherwise I tend to kill them all.) So when 'Bobby' and I are hanging out at my place, do I mention the 'other love' of my life? Never. We need not cause unwanted jealously. But realistically, 'Bobby' doesn't have my heart like my artichokes and jalapenos do. August is the time of year when your garden over produces. I mean, this morning I picked seven thousand peppers, eighty-two tomatoes, and zucchini as long as my tibia. Advertisement: read more

Oh God Here I Go: The Popping of Anniv-Cherries
2007-08-06 04:33:00
Preparing for an official date (strictly dinner no hanky-panky) consists of the following: The googling of restaurants, scouting the actual place like a mad man because I prefer to review the place for myself. The making of reservations, confirming days ahead, the vetoing of numerous outfits at the mall, the search for the perfect shoes gruelingly trying to coordinate myself as a put together package. All this brought me to think if this is a date, how much of a Groomzilla would I be? Perhaps it was the lighting and the quiet but trendy atmosphere at Izakaya restaurant that got me all sleepy-eyed as if I?ve OD?ed on romance once again. It?s been so hot out lately that the breeze from the patio, during dessert coated me with such dreaminess that I almost forgot it was actually me on a perfect date. Trying to contain myself while I yell out ?ding ding ding score!? I cheered myself on mentally. Advertisement: read more

Culture to the Power of Three - Long Weekend + City Events Snapshot
2007-08-04 06:17:00
The moon was full, the night was clear and I was already committed to attend a rooftop patio event downtown but not before seeing one of the most amazing sights I have ever seen in Toronto. The magnificent vision I am referring to is that of the Roger's Chinese Lantern Festival at Ontario Place, which I just happen to fall upon as I took the Lakeshore route to my destination. In full bloom against the night sky this picture in living color was one that actually made me momentarily forget where I was. Seriously, I'm not kidding here. It not only shocked and garnered my attention completely but it made me decide instantly that this was something I have to see before its final run. Naturally I instantly thought I have to let you all in on it but as the week wore on I was also reminded of Caribana happening this weekend as well. And then we have Taste of the Danforth happening next weekend and suddenly I am reminded of how incredibly cultured this city is. So indeed I thought it best ...

The Dyke Does The SpiegelTent'nTavern
2007-08-03 21:08:00
A Belgium Spiegel Tent By Kelly Wilk Rating: 4/4 Flags To put this review into perspective I am a theatre student, a theatre lover, a musical lover and I have seen my fair share of shows in Toronto that have blown my mind. But as I entered The SpiegelTent'nTavern at The Harbourfront Centre, I felt like I had entered a time machine. The wooden cabaret tent (built in Belgium in the 1920s) with a velvet canopy ceiling and muted light through the stained glass windows must have had something to do with it! However it was not just the physical appearance of the theatre that made it a nostalgic experience. read more

"Um... I forgot to mention..."
2007-08-03 02:48:00
You roll over and smile at "Jenn". A great girl, friend of a friend; hung out with you and your crew the night before. Not seemingly a one-nighter; Jenn is pretty great. This could go somewhere... Or it couldn't, you think. But you know you didn't want to mess up the 'morning after'. "Forgot to mention?" You repeat. "I've a daughter." She hesitates as you digest the information. "And she spends the week with her father... And she is due any minute for our weekend together." There's no animosity (after all, you met her the night before), but instead, sheer panic. "No problem," you recover. "I love kids! We can make a great brunch together." Jenn smiles, thinks your a gem, and the doorbell rings. ----------------- read more
Dining on Top of the World - 360 Restaurant
2007-08-02 19:36:00
One of the most romantic things to do in Toronto is to dine near the top of the CN Tower at the 360 Restaurant , more than one thousand feet above the city. Dozens of marriage proposals have been tendered there each year. If you snag a table for Christmas Eve and pop the question, you?ll want to buy the photograph that will be taken of you and your honey before you ascend. Otherwise, don?t be fooled (as I was) into believing this is one of the extensive security checks that precede your journey up to the restaurant. read more

PDA aka Seriously, Knock it Off
2007-08-01 00:23:00
I know that talking about PDA has become mega-redundant, but it seems to be something that people still don?t get. And since I have a very poor gag reflex, I figured I gripe about it this week. Of course, if there is anything you?d like me to address in particular, I am always open to suggestions. Have at it at lanewaydavey@loveintoronto.com HAND HOLDING This is totally fine. I have no issues with this. Additionally, this is the kind of PDA that gets even cuter as a couple ages (have you ever seen octogenarians holding hands? Adorable!) KISSING: LIPS CLOSED Again, this is totally fine?in moderation. One or two is cute. 30 are not. Nothing makes me sadder than a woman emasculating a man treating him like he is a ?widdle baby?. read more
