THE BEST OF RONNIE HAWKINS AND THE HAWKSRelease Date: 06/12/1990Label: RHINO / WEA In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Ronnie Hawkins was one of the few rock'n'rollers committed to performing and recording unapologetic rockabilly while others were returning to their country roots or going the teen idol route. This 18-song compilation focuses mostly on his initial burst of activity for Roulette in 1959 and 1960, with a few later odds and ends thrown in. While he deserves respect for keeping the torch of rock'n'roll's roots burning during some of its leaner years, he didn't match the greatness of rockabilly's kingpins. His voice and performance was energetic but not brilliant; his material was a bit pedestrian. The best of these tunes are "Mary Lou" (his sole top 30 hit), "Forty Days" (an update of Chuck Berry's "Thirty Days"), and "One Of These Days" (later covered by the Searchers). What he's really known for, of course, is giving a bunch of mostly Canadian kids their start...

NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE - (The Complex Sessions 1994) Neil Live in Stúdio with Crazy Horse On October 3rd & 4th, 1994, Neil Young & Crazy Horse and director Jonathan Demme convened in Complex Studios in L.A. to make a film. The Complex Sessions captured Neil and the band just after the Sleeps With Angels recording sessions, as Young was still obsessing over the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. Although the two never met, you might remember their chilling connection... Cobain quoted Young's lyric, "it's better to burn out than to fade away," in his suicide note. What you have here is the audio version of those filmed sessions. Four songs, clocking in at over 25 minutes. No audience, no clutter, no bullshit. Whether Young specifically sang any of these songs with Cobain in mind is hard to say. In fact, he had performed some of them in concert well before this recording date.
