Smoke and Mirrors (Cigar Aficionado)
2008-05-14 13:26:00 "Maybe because a cigar gives you a natural pause, you start to examine whatever it is you're trying to articulate and maybe somehow, for a moment, have the illusion that you're being more articulate than you are. It's not bad, the illusion being articulate!"- Armand Assante, the actor who starred in one of Mr. Media's all-time favorite films, The Mambo Kings. He is featured in the Cigar Aficionado cover story, "Hollywood's Tough Guy," by someone whose byline does not appear in the magazine or online. (Bet there's a good story lurking there, too.) Sandra Beckwith, "The Do(o)little Report" editor: Mr. Media Interview Class
2008-05-13 21:53:00 Originally Published February 3, 1997If you've seen the NBC sitcom "Men Behaving Badly," Sandra Beckwith says you're already familiar with her field of study. The editor of The Do(o)little Report , a bimonthly newsletter that answers the musical question, "Why can't a man be more like a woman?," says the TV show touches the same nerve as her newsletter's popular "Stupid Men Tricks" column."When the commercials for 'Men Behaving Badly' started running last summer, it reminded me of my 'Stupid Men Tricks,' " Beckwith says. "I can't tell you how many people have seen the show and asked if it was based on my newsletter. The trick where the man dries his underwear in a microwave oven? For all I know, the producer does this himself."Coincidentally, Harvey Myman, an executive producer of "Men Behaving Badly," is a subscriber and fan of The Do(o)little Report. 2008-05-13 03:30:00 "I was so geared up when I did Comic-Con. I was putting on the (Tony Stark ) suit in the restroom when Avi (Arad) walks in. So I'm in there with him, in this big can, and I'm in the handicapped stall putting on these boots, and Avi tells me, '(The trailer) played really good on Thursday.' I just said, 'Wow,' but I was thinking, 'I've never heard of people's careers being enhanced and forwarded in a convention room restroom.'"- Robert Downey Jr ., who plays the title character in Iron Man and his alter ego, Tony Stark, in the summer's big movie, recalling his first sense that the movie might be a hit. Katherine Fugate, ARMY WIVES, Lifetime TV show creator: Mr. Media Audio Int
2008-05-12 03:43:00 The last thing we need in our house is another serial TV commitment. But then someone turned me on to ? late, I know ? Lifetime?s ?Army Wives.?I am soooo screwed. If you?re already a fan of the first year drama, you already know it?s sort of like ?Desperate Housewives? on an Army base. It?s also the most successful series in the Lifetime cable channel?s history. If you?re not familiar with the show, check it out. The series is based on Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives, a book by Tanya Blank. It?s full of sex, lies, booze, and bitches. And I mean that in a purely professional sense.Hell, it?s even got a wife who isn?t a wife at all, but a dude married to a woman who is a lieutenant colonel. All of which is a brief introduction to my guest, Katherine Fugate, the creator of ?Army Wives,? which launches its second season on Lifetime on June 8. Katherine is also the niece of TV legend Barbara Eden, star of ?I Dream of Jeannie? and a few million grown-up men?s fantasies.You... More About: Media , Audio , Catherine Bell , Show , Creator
Legs McNeil, PLEASE KILL ME, THE OTHER HOLLYWOOD author: Mr. Media Audio In
2008-05-10 20:23:00 When Spin magazine started, its staff included two fascinating characters. First was Bob Guccione, Jr., the magazine?s founder and namesake son of the publisher of Penthouse. And then there was Spin?s senior editor, Legs McNeil.Legs McNeil!?!What the hell kind of stupid name was that for a journalist? I mean, I grew up with kids named "Plinky," "Jiggs," and "Doine," but "Legs"?Well, let me tell you, that guy Legs McNeil could write. Some months, the only copy worth reading in Spin was under his byline. It wasn?t until years later that I learned that in the early 1970s, McNeil was a co-founder, with John Holmstrom and Ged Dunn, of Punk Magazine, which gave name to an entire musical generation.McNeil has since written two remarkable non-fiction books, Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, and The Other Hollywood : The Uncensored Oral History of the Porn Film Industry He?s also involved in a new documentary series unspooling across VH1, Spike, and the Sundance Channel in Ma... Philip Shenon, THE COMMISSION: THE UNCENSORED HISTORY OF THE 9/11 INVESTIGA
2008-05-10 05:48:00 I think everyone remembers where they were when they first heard about the planes flying into the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon. For our generation, it?s that horrifying moment that matches up with when other generations remember the Kennedy assassination or the bombing of Pearl Harbor. But where were you when the horror of the Bush Administration?s handling of 9/11 began settling in? Its inability to scramble jets that fateful day or the President staying in an elementary school, reading to children about a goat rather than getting up and showing some leadership capabilities? Where were you when the Administration resisted a proper investigation of the attack on America? Philip Shenon, an accomplished and long-time reporter for The New York Times, has written a book that every American should read. The Commission : The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation is, of all things, a beautifully-written journey into the not-so-bipartisan investigation into the governme... Daniel Pink, THE ADVENTURES OF JOHNNY BUNKO, FREE AGENT NATION author: Mr.
2008-05-09 01:07:00 Daniel Pink has made a career of being first on business themes over the last seven years, ever since publication of Free Agent Nation in May 2001. His theory then? That more of us will be working for ourselves in the future.Well, it?s now the future, so I?ll ask him whether that came true.He also wrote A Whole New Mind, about the the move from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age.But Dan?s newest book may be his greatest leap yet: a manga-style graphic novel titled The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You?ll Ever Need. 2008-04-29 02:45:00 (Mr. Media is on vacation this week, so we're rewinding to some of the podcast's earlier, most popular interviews to catch up new listeners!)Today, it?s January 26, 2007, and I am sitting across from David Simon, creator of the critically-acclaimed and Peabody Award-winning HBO series, The Wire. We are speaking at The Inn at the Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida, where Simon spent the last week working with students at Eckerd College. The fiftieth episode and fourth-season finale of The Wire aired just a few weeks ago, and the fifth season goes into production in March, so Simon is hopefully enjoying a vacation of sorts.I am an admitted late-comer to The Wire, having seen my first episode just last September in a New Jersey hotel room. I was struck by the show?s tension and extraordinarily tight script and character development, which has often been overshadowed by better-known HBO shows, such as The Sopranos and Deadwood. Robert Schimmel, CANCER ON $5 A DAY, author, standup comedian: Mr. Media Au
2008-04-23 18:55:00 I tried my hand at stand-up comedy twice in college, once as a freshman at the University of Miami and again a year later at the University of Florida. And no, I wasn?t so bad at Miami that I was asked to leave. They were a lot more subtle than that. Anyway, I gave up that dream early. It?s a tough, humiliating life, not for me. Now, Robert Schimmel, on the other hand, is one of the best stand-up comedians of his generation. He, like Richard Belzer before him, is the guy other comedians watch and measure themselves against. He is naturally funny and naturally crude, rude, and not recommended for listeners under the age of 18. That?s my way of saying if you?re too young to drink or if you?re easily offended, tune out now. The button-down mind of Bob Newhart this definitely is not. These days, Schimmel is still out doing his job making people laugh, but there is a twist. In 2000, when his career was reaching new heights, he was diagnosed with Stage III non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, cancer. ... More About: Media , God , Cancer , Comedian , Author
WILL EISNER & PS MAGAZINE Expert Roundtable Discussion: Mr. Media Interview
2008-04-22 17:14:00 In the pantheon of comic book masters, Will Eisner ?s name is at or near the top of pretty much everyone?s list. He was there at the birth of the genre in the late 1930s ? he famously turned down a submission from Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster of a comic book about a character named Superman. Will suggested they go back to art school in Cleveland and get a little better at his craft.Eisner himself is best known as the creator of an enduring but little known character called "The Spirit." This is a big year for The Spirit, with a major motion picture written and directed by Frank Miller currently in post-production and scheduled for release in January 2009.Eisner is also known as the grandfather of the graphic novel for producing one of the genre?s earliest and most enduring works, 1978?s A Contract With God.I spent three years with Eisner, interviewing him and researching his life for the biography, Will Eisner: A Spirited Life, which was published by M Press/Dark Horse in 2005.There ... Will Eisner & PS Magazine Discussion LIVE on Mr. Media, Friday, April 18, 1
2008-04-17 22:27:00 With the announcement last week that Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries has posted complete scans for 145 regular issues, 3 special issues, and 14 index issues of Will Eisner's rare PS Magazine , I thought it would be fun to have the VCU librarian in charge of the project, Cindy Jackson, as well as the author of the upcoming book, Will Eisner & PS Magazine, Paul Fitzgerald, come on Mr. Media and talk about this little known period in the comics master's career. As Eisner's authorized biographer -- you have read Will Eisner: A Spirited Life by now, haven't you? -- I certainly have a little extra interest in the topic. And with all the hype for Frank Miller 's upcoming film, Will Eisner's The Spirit, the time seems extra-ripe for this!Eisner drew and was artistic editor for PS Magazine from its inception in 1951 until 1972 and these are truly rare examples of his incomparable art work and direction. That's Logical (TV Guide.com)
2008-04-16 14:24:00 "The first day I shot the movie, before it was over J.J. came to me with his phone and showed me a picture that he had downloaded from the internet of us standing in the room that we were still shooting in. It was already on the Internet! That's actually what instigated the heightened security. The next day I showed up and we had floor-length vinyl jackets with hoods [to cover costumes] and golf carts that were completely enclosed in black tarp. That persisted through the entire shoot, even when we were on the lot at Paramount. People were worried about camera phones and digital cameras and it's understandable because there were a couple of times that a background actor or someone who was working on the crew would snap a couple of photos and they would inadvertently end up on the Internet, and that's just a headache for the legal departments.
