Maxim Magazine Pimps The Spirit Movie Babes
2008-04-11 19:48:00
You can't blame the producers of "Will Eisner's The Spirit" for the avalanche of advance publicity promoting the movie's release - although it is still eight months off. Today I picked up the latest issue of Maxim - which I read for the pictures, not the stories - and the cover photo is of Jaime King, one of the many beautiful actress featured in Frank Miller 's upcoming film. And the cover also teases a page of photos of another co-star, Scarlett Johansson .And let me add this: as his authorized biographer, I can't say whether Will Eisner would have liked Miller's version of The Spirit, considering he always opposed the idea of Hollywood adopting his character. But as man who loved beautiful dames, I think it safe to say he would have approved of Miller's female cast!

Raging Debate Over Frank Miller's "Interpretation" of Will Eisner's The Spi
2008-04-09 15:51:00
We hear a lot of whispering about Frank Miller 's upcoming cinematic take on Will Eisner's "The Spirit." And with the first trailer due to be released in just a few days at New York Comic-Con, the whispering is picking up steam, especially as the first green screen images were leaked to the fan press a few days ago. Of course, if you're old enough to remember the brouhaha about Michael Keaton as "Batman ," you know it's too early to accurately judge. On the other hand Brandon Routh as "Superman"? Terribly miscast, poor guy. Anyway, if you'd like to keep up with the debate - or participate in the conversation - check out this message board over at The Comics Journal. You can also see green screen shots there of Gabriel Macht as The Spirit, Samuel L . Jackson as The Octopus, and several more, including a hot shot of Eva Mendes .

Bill Prady, THE BIG BANG THEORY, CBS TV sitcom co-creator: Mr. Media Audio
2008-04-08 20:23:00
Bill Prady is having a pretty good year, writer’s strike and all, thanks to the success of “The Big Bang Theory ,” the hit CBS sitcom he co-created with Chuck Lorre. If you haven’t seen “The Big Bang Theory,” it stars Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons as a couple of supernerds named Leonard and Sheldon – an in-joke for those of us who remember a sitcom master of old, the late Sheldon Leonard. Leonard produced everything from “Make Room for Daddy” with Danny Thomas to “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “The Andy Griffith Show. He was also a director, a writer, and a frequent guest star.Sheldon and Leonard, the lead characters in “The Big Bang Theory” have absolutely nothing in common with their namesake except that he’d probably be proud of the tribute because they are smartly drawn, literate, and, most importantly, damn funny. This isn't Prady's first rodeo; you've also seen his work on "Gilmore Girls," "Star Trek Voyager," "Dharma & Greg," "Two and a Half Men,"...

I’ve never liked dog-earing pages – you know, when you’re reading a book and you fold back the corner of a page to mark your place, or because there was something interesting on the page to which you’d like to return?Well, I’ve never dog-eared a book as much as I did with Timmy’s in the Well, the new autobiography by Jon Provost, former child star of the “Lassie ” television show. This book is not the usual child star recitation of the ills of fame. Okay, it’s a little of that. But Jon Provost’s life is riveting – and so is the telling of his story, assisted as he was by his wife, Laurie Jacobson.I couldn’t wait to have Jon and Laurie on to talk about this fascinating read.open separate window

2008-04-07 16:27:00
Kristin Harmel’s new novel, her fourth, in fact, is titled The Art of French Kissing . It’s a sweet, surprisingly gentle story of a young boy-band publicist, who’s a woman from Orlando, whose life there collapses, and she goes to Paris to escape and maybe find herself again. It’s chick-lit for sure, but I enjoyed it. It also made me think more fondly of Paris than I had since the one time that my wife and I visited there back in ’88. Maybe we’ll get into that later. open separate windowALSO AVAILABLE AS A PODCAST ON iTUNES.Subscribe to Mr. Media 's RSS Feed.BOB ANDELMAN/Mr. MEDIA: So tell us that you’re in some fabulous part of the country.KRISTIN HARMEL: I’m actually back home in Orlando, Florida right now. Return to Part 2!Return to Part 1!ANDELMAN: Would you describe yourself as successful at this point as a novelist, or are you still looking for that around the corner?HARMEL: This is the first year that I would say yes to that question. The first two years I always sort of felt like well, I have these books out. And it was so exciting to walk into any Barnes & Noble in the country or any Borders and see my books sitting there. It still took a little bit of getting used to, like, “Oh my goodness, I can’t believe it. That’s my novel.” This is the first year, though, that I feel like something has really clicked into place. I’m having a lot of people turn up at my launch parties -- and I’m having these launch parties all over the country -- and strangers, people I’ve never met, and say things to me like, “Oh my God, I’m so excited to read your book. I loved your first two books and such a fan.” I guess I never thought I’d get to the point where people would say th...

Return to Part 1!ANDELMAN: That’s really what it comes down to. I’ve got to ask: What does make a bad date? My sense is that you’re single so it’s a fair question.HARMEL: Yes. What makes a bad date? Let me think. I think that maybe the reason I don’t feel like I’ve been on a lot of bad dates is because I usually just enjoy talking to people and finding out about them. I enjoy meeting new people so usually dates are fine, but I think the ones that are bad are the ones that you feel like you’re pulling teeth just to talk to a person. You know what I mean? Like when I feel like I’m interviewing somebody as opposed to having a conversation with them. To me, that’s sort of the worst kind of date where you have these I ask a million questions, and they just answer them with yeses or nos, and they stare at me blankly. It’s like, “Okay, I only have so many questions. I’m running out here.” But, fortunately, I have not been on many of those.ANDELMAN: Let’s come ba...

Bret Carr, RevoLOUtion, indie movie director, producer and star: Mr. Media
2008-04-04 03:22:00
Bret Carr made a movie. Lots of people make movies these days. Every idiot with a digital camcorder thinks he is Scorsese, Tarantino, or Apatow, but Carr approached his first feature film, RevoLOUtion, a little differently. He landed Quinn Redeker, the man behind The Deer Hunter, to write his screenplay. Rocky composer Bill Conti created the title song. Paul Michael Glaser, best known as Detective Star sky from the classic TV series ?Starsky & Hutch,? is a producer. Carr even convinced Burt Young, who played Sylvester Stallone?s brother-in-law in the Rocky films, to be himself in RevoLOUtion. But who to play Lou Benedetti, the stuttering, somewhat brain-damaged, yet ultimately inspirational star of the film? That would be Carr himself, who also produced and directed RevoLOUtion. And wait until you hear about his unusual ideas about marketing.open separate window

I met James Sheehan at a St. Petersburg Times Festival of Reading event back in 2005. I was there promoting my new biography of Will Eisner and he was riding a wave of excellent reviews for his first novel, The Mayor of Lexington Avenue .As we got talking, however, we realized we had met before ? through our dogs.Turns out, Jim and his wife literally live around the corner from me. I walk my dogs several times a day, and his dogs had figured out a way of tunnelling under the fence. They didn?t know how to get back once they were loose, however, so my wife and I returned them to the Sheehan?s yard more than once over the years. They?ve got a new fence now, so that doesn?t happen as often.A few weeks back, Jim and I met up again. He was on his way to South Carolina for a big booksellers event to launch his second novel, The Law of Second Chances. Jim gave me a copy to read and I knew it was time to get my neighbor on the show.open separate windowALSO AVAILABLE AS A PODCAST ON iTUNES.Sub...
Editor & Publisher to Daily Newspapers: Drop Dead
2008-04-02 16:03:00
"I feel a bit guilty about this. After all, I write for and offer advice to newspapers on an industry website. I support the newspaper industry and hope that it can come through the current downturn and learn to thrive in the new media world. So, wouldn't I want to support it by continuing to pay for printed newspapers to land on my driveway each morning, as a sign of solidarity with the industry? After all, print revenues are keeping the industry afloat, since online revenues can't yet match print's. Umm, no, actually."-- Steve Outing, "Stop the Presses" online columnist for Editor & Publisher , explaining why he cancelled his subscription to his local newspaper, the Boulder Daily Camera. (For the record, Mr. Media still gets two daily newspapers delivered to his driveway everyday, the St. Petersburg Times and The New York Times. That's not to say the handwriting isn't on the wall, but we're not ready to look at it that closely yet.)

I think probably just about the same time you got to Marvel I was coming to Florida, and I?ve been hearing ever since that we need to lock down the state, we need to close the exits, not let anymore people in here to spoil what we?ve got. Good luck with that. You got a state surrounded by water. Good luck locking it up. Tell me a little bit about Superman on the Couch. And I?m gonna be perfectly honest. I think you already know this. I have not read the book, but I love the title, and I love what I?ve read about it. What was the driving force in that book?DANNY FINGEROTH: That was the idea of taking my experience as a comics professional. I?m trying to sort out a lot of different answers to that. Danny Fingeroth spends a whole lot of time thinking about superheroes. For several years, he did it as the editor of the Spider-Man group of titles at Marvel Comics . Today, he?s the editor of Write Now! magazine and author of two books that go behind the four-color glory of men in tights. Already the author of Superman on the Couch, Fingeroth?s latest examination of comics, Disguised as Clark Kent, explores why so many of the enduring characters of the golden and silver ages of comics can trace their heritage back to young American Jewish artists and writers such as Will Eisner , Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, Jack Kirby, and Stan Lee. I would say it would be about ?76 or ?77, and I was at the Marvel offices as a 15-, 16-year-old teen boy, fanboy, I admit, thinking I had just died and gone to heaven. It was just like, ?Oh. My. God. Good 'Ol Times: Mason Dixon Marks 30 Years On The AirBy WALT BELCHERThe Tampa Tribune March 23, 2008 ST. PETERSBURG - The week always begins with "Blue Monday" and ends with "Friday on My Mind."In between are jokes, parody songs, rock 'n' roll standards, patriotic salutes to the troops, prize giveaways, the occasional "Polka Challenge" and large doses of self-deprecating observational humor from Mason Lee Roy Pee Wee Bodine Moon-Pie (and any other Southern name you like) Dixon.Every weekday morning, Dixon gives his take on the news:"You can tell its spring. Return to Part 1!Return to Part 2!BOB ANDELMAN/Mr. MEDIA: Stephen, is there another source of revenue besides the ads on the site?STEPHEN CHAO: That?s a good question. Yes, our business model is advertising-supported. That said, we need a certain threshold of traffic before we can become profitable. I think that, certainly in making the business plan, we were very much intending to monetize it in a couple of different ways. Namely, the real virtue of the site right now from an advertising perspective is unlike Google AdSense and keywords where you have contextually perfect ad placement in a text-based website, in video sites, you kind of have random tags and nonsense and really kind of unreliable metadata. Because each video that we have is in one of 36 categories and 407 sub-categories and because it?s curated by a human curator you know the video is the real deal as opposed to a piece of junk or spam or a broken link or whatever.
