You come to an audition to show your skills as an actor. When you arrive at the audition, you should have with you an 8 x 10 photo and resume. You should also have your appointment book with you in case you need to know if you can be available for the part if you book it. Most auditions are set by appointment, so be sure you arrive fifteen minutes early, and expect to stay until you are seen.When you arrive (at most auditions) there will be a "sign-up" sheet for you to sign. This sheet will vary in content. If the call is for union actors, the sheet will include social security information, union information, age range and other information the union requires to keep auditions fair for their members, e.g. time of your call and time you finished the audition.If it is for a non-union call, there may be just a piece of paper for you to sign your name, so that you may be called in the order you arrive.At some auditions, you will be asked before you arrive to have one or two monologues p...

This gives me a chance to really get to know the person. If that goes well, I ask the actor to come back and meet the other agents. It's essential that everyone be in agreement. One agent should never try to convince the others to sign someone.And that's basically it. The only problem is actors tend to be their own worst enemy. Working as an Extra, or "Background Actor"

Unlike actors, extras do NOT have agents who take a 10 percent commission. You simply register with extras casting companies and call in each day on their casting lines to get work. Unless you hire a "booking Service" for about $30 -$50 a month to "call-in" and get you the work. Of course these "calling or booking services" really do not "call-in" to get you the work, they simply know people at the extras casting companies and get lists of what they need, and act as "sub-casting agents". Think about it, why would the extras casting company individually call each and every person, when they can just call a "booking service" and say, "we need 120 people for a party scene". Then the "booking service" does all the work and calls each of their clients themselves! SAG is trying to regulate these companies at some point, but the fact remains that these services can get you much more work than you can on your own just calling in on the casting lines all day trying to get through the busy si...

There are two types of talent agents, theatrical (television and film) and commercial (for television commercials). Being with the same agency for both is called being "signed across the board," but many actors prefer to have separate agents for different types of work, become some agencies can be better commercially, but not as good theatrically, or vice versa. Agent s get information about auditions for roles, either directly from casting directors and producers calling them asking for client submissions, or from a service called "the breakdowns," a daily list of roles being cast, sent only to agents and managers. Agents work for you, but they only get 10% of what you make, so that means you need to do 90% of the work--especially when you are getting started. A genuine agent works for a percentage of what you're paid, which means you get paid first.* Talent scouts or agents who insist you take their acting or modeling course before they'll get you work or that you use their photographer for your composite. These folks are making money off the courses and photography alone. They have no motivation to find you work.* Anyone who insists that contracts aren't necessary. My acting coach Cliff Osmond (see link below, he is the bomb, and no, I am not saying you should study with him because he only takes advanced students on audition. I am using this as an example ONLY that you should find a teacher at your level in your area and study), told me once that a student came walking into one of his classes and had such a huge level of confidence, that everyone in the room looked up and noticed it. He was not cocky, but was just so confident in himself and who he was, that when he was performing a scene, he was a true "natural". This guy took 3 weeks of acting lessons and then landed a contract role on a tv show. He is now a huge celebrity actor. But Cliff told me he has seen that happen only twice in his career as an acting teacher. So don't fool yourself into believing that you are one of those rare people. Just go with the odds and study study, perform, practice, and study some more. Why wouldn't you want an edge on the competition when you are getting...
