In this age when $100 million blockbuster movies are routine and a few stars eat up half the budget, the closing credits are a quaint anachronism. How many people actually sit through that endless scroll of grips and best boys? Besides, it's not as if getting the film made hinged on the guy driving the equipment truck to the set. Yet in Boston this year, it did. The parade of red-carpet Hollywood stars seen around town would have gone elsewhere if not for a group of anonymous blue-collar support people. Without their willingness to do their jobs quietly, there would have probably been no Morgan Freeman here, no Cameron Diaz, no Meg Ryan, no Christopher Walken, and none of those big bucks they spent on hotels and clothes and meals. Let us take a moment to salute the well-behaved Teamster.

So, because you can't know where you're going without knowing where you've been (I'm getting so wise), I decided to reflect on what made celebrity headlines in January, 2007. For starters, Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz broke up in the very beginning of the year. Sexy was brought back into the headlines weeks later when he died and went to seventh heaven. Reports of him "flirting" with Jessica Biel were just starting to bud this time last year, and now the couple basically lives together in JT's house.Anna Nicole Smith was making headlines because her son had died in the Bahamas, and the press was busy speculating who fathered her baby. Months later Anna Nicole died herself, and Howard Stern and Larry Birkhead spent much of 2007 fighting over DannieLynn (and probably the big chunk of change that came with her).

A science fiction film starring Cameron Diaz will film scenes in January at NASA Langley Research Center."The Box" is directed by Richard Kelly, who grew up nearby in Newport News and in Richmond's suburbs. The film is based on a short story by Richard Matheson.Kelly is best known for writing and directing "Donnie Darko" in 2001, which was filmed in California but set in Virginia.In the 1970s Kelly's father Lane worked as an engineer at Langley, helping develop the camera for the Mars Viking program that would take the first close-up pictures of the Martian surface.Producers plan on shooting four to six days at Langley in late January, Langley spokesman Chris Rink said.
