Parties slammed over same-sex rights The authors of a new report into the legal rights of gays and lesbians have criticised both major political parties over the treatment of same-sex couples.The report, overseen by the Australian National University's (ANU) Democratic Audit of Australia, has found same-sex couples still do not have the same rights as heterosexuals.Co-author Sarah Maddison says this means they do not have access to carers' leave to look after a sick partner, Medicare and PBS safety nets, or superannuation benefits.Doctor Maddison says the Government's position will not change, citing the overturning of the ACT's same sex laws last year."The Federal Government has not been able to hold back the tide of public opinion," she said."Nonetheless, this Federal Government clearly is not about to make change. A Pakistani court ordered the arrest of a couple who married last year after a team of doctors concluded the groom was really a woman, despite a sex-change operation, officials said last week. The case casts a rare public spotlight on transsexualism, which along with homosexuality and cross-dressing are considered taboo in conservative Pakistan. The Lahore High Court issued the warrant May 9 after medics charged with examining 31-year-old Shumail Raj submitted their report, Mohammed Sharif, a judge at the court, told the Associated Press. Ejaz Bhatty, a senior doctor who led the team, said Raj told the medics he had consulted a doctor 16 years ago after noticing that his voice had changed and that he was sprouting facial hair. Anti-gay Activist Jerry Falwell Dead at 73He blamed gays and lesbians for the 9/11 terrorist attacks and made himself a household name by claiming Teletubbie Tinky Winky was gay, and now, the founder of the Moral Majority, the Rev. Jerry Falwell, is dead at 73. Ron Godwin, Liberty University's executive vice president, told the Associated Press Falwell had been found unresponsive in his office at around 10:45 a.m. and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Falwell has a history of heart problems, and while Godwin said he was unsure what caused the collapse, he said the televangelist and outspoken anti-gay rights activist was fine when the two shared breakfast earlier this morning. Falwell founded the Moral Majority in 1979 and became the face of the religious right in the 1980s. He later founded the conservative Liberty University and served as the school?s chancellor.
