Eau d?Italie Magnolia Romana, Ellie D Ellie Nuit, By Kilian Beyond Love ~ f
2008-06-06 11:31:00
Bertrand Duchaufour might be my second favorite (living) perfumer at the moment (you regular readers know that Jean-Claude Ellena is still at the top of the list), so Magnolia Romana by Eau d'Italie was one of my "most looked forward to" fragrances this year. I was a little worried about the "summer ozone" and "water" notes (other notes include purple basil, lemon leaves, neroli, nutmeg, cypress, magnolia, Bulgarian rose, tuberose, lotus, cedar, hay extract and white musk), and I was right to be: I don't like synthetic "fresh" notes, and while Magnolia Romana isn't overwhelmingly "fresh", it's just fresh enough to bother me. Despite the fascinating list of notes, it reads as very nearly bland on my skin ? I'd call it a musky skin scent with sheer florals and earthy undertones, and while Bertrand Duchaufour has a way with earthy undertones, to my mind, his talents are shown to better advantage in L'Artisan Timbuktu or Eau d'Italie Paestum Rose. Kevin, who was waiting for Magn...

2008-06-05 00:05:00
The 2008 fragrance awards season is over, and we have a winner: Marc Jacobs Daisy, by a landslide. Daisy took a grand total of 7 awards for best fragrance, including Fifi (or equivalent) awards from the US, the UK and France, plus nods from the Canadian Fragrance Awards , Cosmetic Executive Women (US & UK) and Cosmetique magazine. I think it's those chirpy little daisies on the bottle. Who doesn't love chirpy rubber daisies? The runner-up: Prada Infusion d'Iris, which took 4 awards for best fragrance. On the men's front, Narciso Rodriguez For Him was the "most honored", taking 4 awards. The runners-up, Jean Paul Gaultier Fleur du Male and Diesel Fuel for Life for Him, took only 2 awards each. Etat Libre d?Orange Tom of Finland ~ fragrance review
2008-06-04 23:44:00
According to État Libre d?Orange and the Tom of Finland Foundation, Touko Laaksonen (a.k.a. Tom of Finland) ?was one of the most influential artists of the last century? and before he began creating his beefcake illustrations in the 1950s, gay men went around lisping and limp-wristed, dressed in chiffon or dandy garb or they huddled ? scared, bony and uptight ? in dark corners, nervously adjusting their ties, cardigans and horn-rimmed specs. In other words, gay life, pre-Tom of Finland, was full of flamers and nerds. Perhaps Tom of Finland?s aesthetic influenced the world of fashion (and ?gym culture?) for some gay men who hopped onto his brawny bandwagon and dressed in tight jeans and t-shirts, leather boots and jackets. État Libre d?Orange Tom of Finland was created by perfumer Antoine Lie and contains aldehydes, lemon, birch leaves, cypress, galbanum, pine, suede, musk, gray amber, pepper, saffron, tonka bean, iris, geranium, vanilla, vetiver, and styrax. Men, as you spray on To...

Polli Austrailian Jewelry
2008-06-04 20:44:00
Polli creates unique and contemporary jewelry, designed and crafted in Australia. Maja Rose and Tess Lloyd met in 1999 while studying Industrial Design at the University of Technology in Sydney. After graduating into professional roles, the designers soon sought the fulfillment of creating their own products. Polli earrings are bold, simple designs that play with form, pattern, and color. The stainless steel and gold anodized ranges of earrings are etched from thin sheets to create fine patterns and details. The thin metal sheets allow the earrings to be light to wear while still being elegant and striking. Gold Anodized Earrings & Pendant Etched from aluminum and then anodized (dipped in an electrically charged bath), these pieces are beautifully light to wear and have a warm golden finish. They hang from gold-filled hooks and coordinate with the gold anodized pendants. Maja and Tess have designed and created a line of jewelry using manufacturing techniques usually reserved f...

Liverpool beats the competition
2008-06-04 04:48:00
Liverpool beats the competition The city is now a credible fashion hotspot, finds Molly Gunn 'Liverpool people naturally wear more fashion than the inhabitants of any other city. The girls there are wonderful, they all wear high heels." Golden moment: Coleen McLoughlin at the Stella Loves Liverpool catwalk showWhen the late Isabella Blow, then fashion editor of Tatler, dubbed Liverpool her ''Capital of Couture" in 2002, many suspected it was more to do with her personal penchant for stilettos than any real style credibility. While the honorary title may have been stretching the truth by miles then, it's certainly not stretching it so far any more.We used to worry about losing our best young London Fashion Week designers to Paris and New York but, judging by recent events, perhaps we should be thinking about the city just a National Express ride away. All eyes in the arts world are on this year's Capital of Culture as it has risen spectacularly to the occasion, putting on ...

How to stay visible at fifty
2008-06-04 04:24:00
How to stay visible at fifty For older British women, style is often a problem, not a pleasure - but it's all about attitude, says Celia Walden 'I have enjoyed greatly the second blooming," Agatha Christie once said. "Suddenly you find, at the age of 50, that a whole new life has opened before you."  Infinite variety: Helen MirrenRousing words, but shortly after that she famously disappeared. The truth is that very few women believe in a "second blooming", certainly where style is concerned; instead, one word recurs when women over 50 describe themselves: "invisible".Celebrities preaching the benefits of their "coming of age" to magazines - Kim Cattrall, Helen Mirren, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Stone - belie a gloomy national perception: according to OnePoll, 40 per cent of British women think they lose their sense of style by the age of 40.Elsewhere in Europe, women seem to celebrate age and revel in being released from the faddish shackles of teenage ye...

Lancome Peut-Etre ~ perfume review
2008-06-03 23:01:00
We've all been there: I was standing at the Lancôme counter at Saks Fifth Avenue and asking for a sniff of a new fragrance, in this case Lancôme Peut-Être. The sales associate said, "Ah, yes, it's so beautiful!" She sprayed it on my arm, and a few seconds later I lifted it to my nose. "What do you think?" she said eagerly. "Isn't it beautiful?" The fragrance was barely dry, and I wasn't ready to say anything about it, really. But the ambery mix I smelled wasn't what I'd expected at all, given the ad campaign touting French gardens full of roses and jasmine. "I thought it would be more floral," I said. "Oh, floral. Try this ? Mille et Une Roses. Very beautiful," she said. I had the feeling that she could be dabbing other liquids on my arm and saying, "Lysol toilet cleaner. Beautiful. You should treat yourself," while she calculated her commission. I wrassled a few drops from the tester to try later, but my first impression was that it smelled like Lorenzo Villoresi Alamut lite....

Work that look
2008-06-03 21:09:00
Work that look We quizzed five fashionable women in vastly different jobs about what they wear for work. Their answers, refreshingly, are anything but uniform. Interviews by Ellen Burney Madeleine Collins, 54, prep-school head teacher   Wears dress by whistles, shoes by L K Bennett and tights by Wolford Describe your style Formal, but as I work with children it's softened. I want them to respect me but feel they can come to cuddle me when they need to. I might wear a tailored jacket by Gerard Darel over a wool dress like this. Does your job affect how you dress? Yes. Working with young children, I like to wear a detail that is fun. It can be shocking-pink tights, a sparkling bangle, an oversized watch, a big belt, or a locket that opens to reveal a photograph. I do everything from teaching lessons to sometimes driving the minibus, so there is a practical element to my choice of clothes, too. I wear trousers but never trouser suits. Do you plan your outfits? Always. I don't ...

I know I?ve been ignoring the bag?s reviews lately, so I decided to catch up with this one. It?s probably something you won?t be very fond of since it?s not the typical summer bag choice, but anyway, that?s my decision for a review. What I like about this bag is what I like about every big bag ? there?s nothing you can?t carry in it. It?s practical and at the same time fashionable. And what I specifically like in the model is the small handle. The way it?s narrowed on the top brings me back in time. It looks like an old fashioned travel bag, but at the same time it has the today?s modern look. As I said it?s not the perfect choice for the summer season and I certainly don?t see it in combination with fairy summer dresses or shorts, or even summer suits, but it?s charming and great looking and something I can?t just pass by and not review. The right season for i...

Random musings on Yves Saint Laurent Paris
2008-06-02 22:08:00
In a sense, I was influenced by Après L'Ondée (1906). I love Guerlain fragrances, but I said to myself that, if I were to make Après L'Ondée today, it would be much lighter, airier, younger. Some pieces I wouldn't use. So Paris started as an imagined Après L'Ondée. Obviously, in Après L'Ondée, you don't have roses in the background, but I had the skeleton of a very creamy violet note. Then I worked on the rose to put with it. That's perfumer Sophia Grojsman talking about the genesis of Yves Saint Laurent Paris (from Michael Edwards' Perfume Legends: French feminine fragrances, p. 200), her first fragrance. Paris debuted in 1983, and was the perfect fragrance for the time: I wore it, my mother wore it, some days it seemed like everyone wore it (and plenty of it, more about which below). Paris opens fruity and bright and big, with a happy, optimistic air. The heart is lush, jammy roses softened by Grojsman's "creamy violet note". Yves Saint Laurent had reportedly chosen the ...

Viktor & Rolf: so good they did it twice

Viktor & Rolf : so good they did it twice For a celebration of their work at the Barbican, fashion's most bizarre double act are dressing dolls in miniature remakes of their greatest hits. Sarah Mower peeks into the weird world of Viktor & Rolf Quite how to do justice to the strange phenomenon that is Viktor & Rolf is a problem that has teased fashion editors for years. Me, anyway. They are fashion's odd men out, a Dutch pair who dress like twins, speak in a serious monotone, always in agreement, never interrupting one another. It's an effect that, like Gilbert & George, makes them deliberately and disconcertingly hard to tell apart, as well as near-impossible to fathom. Double Dutch: Viktor Horsting (left) and Rolf SnoerenSince 1998 this earnest, joined-at-the-mind double act has bestowed on fashion audiences some of the most memorable show experiences ever witnessed. The things they do are never outright shocking, but they are definitely what my granny wou...
