Classic Perfume Advertising 1920-1970 by Jacqueline Johnson ~ perfume book
2008-05-28 17:54:00
Jacqueline Johnson's Classic Perfume Advertising features a collection of 370 color prints published in American and French magazines between 1920 and 1970. I?ve always admired the work of illustrators from the 1920s and ?30s, so when I found this book on Amazon for a little under $29, I didn't think twice about ordering it. Although there are many print ad collections on the net nowadays, I prefer to browse through them in a nice, large book. I was also curious about the stories behind these ads, the people who created them, and the impact they had on the public. How did time affect universal themes in perfume advertising, like romance, sensuality, luxury, and elegance? I had high hopes for this book, and was really looking forward to it. But when my copy finally came in the mail, I couldn?t help feeling disappointed. What you get for your 29 dollars is a book with a lot of beautiful illustrations indeed. Print ads for big houses like Coty, Guerlain, Lanvin, Lelong, Caron, Patou,...

Courvoisier L?edition Imperiale ~ fragrance review
2008-05-28 06:24:00
For several years, I?ve been mourning the discontinuation (and disappearance) of a favorite fragrance, and I?ve searched high and low for it. A Perfume Detective is on the case. (I won?t reveal the perfume?s name till I secure every bottle remaining on the planet. Yes, greed!) Last summer, in Padova, Italy, I smelled a fragrance that was the closest I?ll probably ever come to my beloved, but discontinued, perfume ? unless it?s reissued ? but I could not get the name of the fragrance since the two people I smelled it on got lost in the crowd: a beautifully dressed woman walking her two dachshunds (also nicely appointed) and a man scurrying by my table as I had lunch at an outdoor cafe. I shared the pain of these close encounters with lots of people and one of those people, a Now Smell This reader in Europe, Dusan, said he would keep a nose out for the fragrance after I described it to him. I made one assumption about the mystery fragrance since I smelled it on a man and a woman in th...

Mirth, wit and class: a dress code that won?t let you down
2008-05-28 02:11:00
Mirth, wit and class: a dress code that won't let you down With smart summer outings looming ever closer, it's time to conquer seasonal 'style paranoia', says Hannah Betts In pictures: Smart summer classics With the Chelsea Flower Show but a fragrant memory, the summer season is truly upon us. For weeks, British households have been amassing invitations for weddings, garden parties, operas and the like. Gratifying as it is to have a welter of cards adorning the mantelpiece, a certain pall is likely to descend on the female of the party as the day approaches.  Summer breeze: Jaeger and Gap are selling must-have items this season"Lofty event among fashionable people?" runs one's internal killjoy: "Why not throw into the mix uncertain weather, the matters of millinery and hosiery, and dreadfully damp grass?"And dress codes are not what they used to be. In place of yesteryear's "black tie" or "cocktail garb" has come a plethora of dicey-sounding vagaries such as "glamorous",...

Prêt-à-rapporter: Rolling out the rock chic Sarah Mower interviews Brix Smith-Start; the guitarist turned stylist, plus explains why Jerry Hall's wedding gown is up for auction and how white blazers have made a comeback... In pictures: The forensic shopper ASK THE BUYER This week: Brix Smith-Start at Start With her shock of Debbie Harry hair and high-pitched, mile-a-minute Californian patter laced with rock and roll lingo, Brix Smith-Start is quite possibly London's most eccentric fashion buyer - and near-on its best saleswoman.  Smart: Brix Smith-StartStep into her boutique on Rivington Street, in Shoreditch, and you're in for a whirlwind."My ethos here is to make it look like a candy store, so you come in, look around and have to leave with a little something every time," declares the former guitarist for The Fall, with a massive smile. Christina Aguilera Inspire ~ new perfume
2008-05-27 22:27:00
Christina Aguilera 's second fragrance under arrangements with Procter & Gamble, and her first to be marketed in the United States, will be Inspire, due to launch this September: The new effort is meant to provide "a modern take on the Pop Art era," the influence that Warhol had on the period combined with the image of Tokyo, particularly "the energy and excitement and how the whole city feels and comes alive at night," she said. Christina Aguilera Inspire will be a tuberose-focused white floral; according to a P&G spokesperson, Aguilera "loves tuberose fragrances but they tend to be a bit heavy so we kept working on it to make it more young". Additional notes include mango, citrus, freesia, rose, gardenia, orange blossom, sandalwood and musks. Christina Aguilera Inspire will be available in 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum and in matching body products. (via wwd)

The usual perfume names
2008-05-27 22:12:00
De Swardt denies the naming of the perfumes was a deliberate strategy to court controversy. "My aim in the beginning was to have a gallery of excitement for perfumers," de Swardt says. "The names were mostly to leverage emotion from the perfumers, to get them into a true zone of sexuality and sensuality. The usual perfume names are so ubiquitous, such as Beauty or Love, that it is difficult to do something different. I didn't want to go into that commercial story, but yes, in the end the names do become that (controversial)." ? Etienne de Swardt of Etat Libre d'Orange talks to columnist Georgina Safe of The Australian, in A whiff of scandal.

Stephen LeBlanc Art Jewelry
2008-05-27 18:48:00
What exactly is art jewelry? Some jewelry is just too beautiful and too unique to be called anything but art jewelry. Some of it is too precious and/or fragile to wear. And, to me at least, it also means that the piece is designed and handmade by the artist. To me, anyone who can take a sheet of precious metal, and or wire, and create a piece of jewelry from scratch, is a jewelry artist. Stephen LeBlanc draws his inspiration from the natural world with his line of hand forged jewelry. By concentrating on the transitions within each form, edges become expanding planes and surfaces respond to one another. Each piece is created from one piece of material, which LeBlanc stretches and forms to its extreme limit of plasticity. All of his designs are offered in different metals, hence the different prices. Ginkgo Necklace & Earrings Hand forged from one piece of silver, this stunning anticlastic sterling neckpiece has a high-polished and matte finish, and lays gracefully around the ne...

But my practical, and sensible self is screaming at me, there's no way I would ever be able to afford it! Dream on...

Combine
2008-05-27 01:37:00
This may be a little too much for the hot summer days, but if you?re working in an office or any other place requiring more formal wear, it can be just perfect. The color might be too bright for you, but I?m sure the outfit comes in variety of them, so you just have to take your pick. For me this is one nice, fresh looking color that takes the combination away from the conventional and boring. The white blouse underneath the blue vest makes it stand out even more and makes the entire outfit look more professional and formal. The belt also adds up to the more formal look and also makes it follow the latest fashion trends. The combination can be easily combined with skirts or pants. My choice will be something in the dark shades (black, dark blue), this way the attention will be focused on the upper body part. If you want to turn this outfit into som...

5 Perfumes for: Gourmand Deniers
2008-05-27 00:23:00
The dessert course has never been among my many vices. I can track a fresh bowl of heavily buttered popcorn from several blocks away, but the Triple Brownie Blackout cake has never called my name. Of course, I like chocolate ? those people who claim not to like it always make me suspicious ? but it must be very dark, and in fact, I will happily eat that 98% cocoa solids stuff with the consistency of chalk. Unfortunately, I do still drink pop, although I blame the carbonation there: I choose mineral water when it?s available. I love traveling in the U.S. because of the wide availability of brewed, unsweetened iced tea. (In Canada, if you are foolish enough to ask for an ice tea, you will likely get a syrup-based product out of a drink gun. If you can finish it, you are a better person than I am.) When I am cajoled into a dessert, ice cream or coffee bar by one of the many sugar-addicted members of my family, my first question to the server is always: ?Which option would you say is th...

Calvin Klein Secret Obsession, CK IN2U POP ~ new fragrances
2008-05-26 15:43:00
Calvin Klein will launch Secret Obsession , a new fragrance for women fronted by Eva Mendes, this coming September. The Secret Obsession fragrance is a floriental with no relationship to the original Calvin Klein Obsession scent other than the name and the steamy advertising (the television spot has apparently been nixed by network censors). According to a Coty representative, Obsession put Calvin Klein on the map in 1985 and continues to be an integral piece of the brand portfolio...While Obsession epitomized the overt glamour and sexuality of the Eighties, Secret Obsession will become the meaning of what is sexy today ? more personal, sophisticated and intoxicating. The little black dress of perfumes

Cologne is the little black dress of perfumes. It's a basic, it's a classic, it will suit you forever and every girl (and boy, for colognes are unisex) should have at least one in a fragrance collection. This scent is a refreshing antidote to the simpering, cloying and cynically commercial fruity florals now clogging up perfume counters. ? From Heaven scent: Cologne proves a refreshing antidote to perfume by columnist Bethan Cole in the Independent.

The closet thinker: best prom dresses
2008-05-25 03:51:00
The closet thinker: best prom dresses You shall go to the prom, says Justine PicardieNow that a loaf of bread has never been so expensive, what are we to make of the fact that the shops are full of frivolously flounced prom dresses? Perhaps fashion is having a Marie Antoinette moment, by making a pronouncement that is the sartorial equivalent of 'Let them eat cake'. Or could it be a hankering to return to the innocence of a semi-fictional 1950s Americana landscape, when girls looked like Olivia Newton-John in Grease, and bad boys were no more threatening than a young John Travolta?Whatever the mysterious catalyst might be, the prom dress (previously an almost exclusively American term) is suddenly very much in evidence in this country - whether in black strapless satin or gingham at Oasis, scarlet taffeta at Primark and floral prints or candy-pink at Luella. They're eminently suitable for a confident 18-year-old girl to wear to an end-of-term celebration or post-A-level school-le...

Betty Jackson: a very un-grande dame
2008-05-25 03:17:00
Betty Jackson : a very un-grande dame There's simply nothing to dislike about Betty Jackson the woman or her wearable-but-chic clothes. So why has she been receiving hate mail? Britain's least fashion-y fashion designer reveals all to Kate Finnigan Betty Jackson's studio is tucked away in a secret hidey-hole above a car mechanic's yard in west London. There's something fitting about this. The designer clearly adores fashion and continues to have enormous fun and success with it, but she wouldn't want to give the impression that it's anything to get esoteric about. 'It's only frocks,' she'll say breezily, Britishly, well aware that a grande dame of design is not expected to utter such profanities. 'I think that clothes should know their place, that your personality is much more important than the frock you've got on.' The sound of a mechanic bashing away below only serves to underline the sentiment. Betty Jackson at her studio above a car mechanic's yardAt 58, an...
