Dsquared2 She Wood ~ perfume review
2008-10-28 00:45:00
Some of you may remember the hoops Kevin had to jump through in order to get his hands on Dsquared2's debut scent, He Wood , last year. Thanks to the glory that is Nordstrom, my story is happier, but less entertaining: I just walked in, picked up the tester, and asked them to make me a sample. Done. I've never been able to make up my mind about He Wood. I like it well enough and find it pleasant to wear, but I'm not wildly enthusiastic: the dry down is maybe a bit more clean and a bit less wood than I'd prefer. Regardless, it's certainly not the über-masculine concoction you might expect from the name and the packaging; in fact, He Wood apparently has plenty of female fans already, and Dean and Dan Caten, the founders of the DSquared2 label, took pains to point out that they weren't after something über-feminine with She Wood: ...they wanted to create a modern woman's scent for the "cool girls who wear men's scents.""We started from a men's fragrance and made it feminine....

London Fashion Week dates announced for next year
2008-10-27 21:34:00
London Fashion Week dates announced for next year London Fashion Week has survived ‘The Mysterious Case of the Clashing Schedules.’ Back in the beginning: Alexander McQueen started off showing his collections at LFW Just last month, it appeared hope was lost. Conspiracy theories were suggested. London Fashion Week was painted as the doomed filling in a ‘doorstep-sized sandwich’, surrounded by the encircling forces of the rival fashion weeks in New York, Milan and Paris. There was talk of LFW being reduced to a three-day or four-day event. Was it to be squeezed out altogether? It now appears the flagship for our multi-billion pound fashion, clothing and textiles industry has found an acceptable, if not totally triumphant solution. In pictures: 'Best of LFW' s/s 2009The next London Fashion Week, for autumn/winter 2009/10, will be held from Friday, February 20th to Tuesday, February 24th - a total of five days. True, there will be a one-day overlap with N...

Marcia Moran Designer Jewelry
2008-09-15 14:43:00
Marcia Moran was born, raised, and educated in Brazil. Inspired by her father, she became a dentist in the early 90s, and started her own dental practice in Sao Paulo in 1994, but she always wanted to work with fashion and jewelry. In 2003, she moved to Los Angeles and decided to make her dream come true. She is now the owner and founder of Marcia Moran Jewelry Designs. Marcia Moran Gold Plated Link Bracelet Brushed 18k Gold Plated Linked Bracelet. Large, lightweight, interlocking chain measuring 7" long. Adjustable clasp and hook closure. $263 Moran's pieces are clever and kitschy, with nautical touches, lots of gold, and luscious gemstones. I can't tell if she makes her own jewelry now, or if she is still importing pieces from Brazil - more than likely a combination of the two. I love the soft sheen of the brushed gold and the simplicity of her designs. These pieces won't be out of style any time soon, and the 18k gold plating makes her jewelry affordable. Mar...

Tag Heuer Monaco Review
2008-09-15 04:04:00
I at a happy place in my life as I am now a owner of a Tag Heuer Monaco Automatic Chronograph CW2113.FC6183 - the blue Steve McQueen's Monaco. Back in 2004 I wrote the first time about the Tag Heuer Monaco on Wrist Dreams. I was in love with this classic square beauty already back then. Tag Heuer introduced the first Monaco in 1969. It was the first water-resistant chronograph with a square case. In 1970 Steve McQueen made the Monaco famous wearing it in the movie Le Mans. There are several versions of the Monaco available today from Tag Heuer, but for me only the blue one is really the one. Why I am so attracted to the Tag Heuer Monaco is difficult to describe. It just looks perfect and it looks perfect on my wrist. Even if Steve McQueen would have not worn it, I still would love this watch. The Monaco also makes quite an impression on others as it shape combined with the blue dial and strap stand out. What I found out also is that the watch fits to all my clothes. No matte...

Kenzo has launched Winter Flowers , a limited edition flanker to their popular Flower by Kenzo fragrance (introduced in 2000). During the heart of winter, when nature slumbers, delicate winter flowers startle the quiet scenery with their early blooms. Three precious winter flowers were picked to create Kenzo's new bouquet?a floral and powdery eau de parfum. This gently surprising scent opens with honey-hinted mimosa and brightens with green floral tones of camellia. Hellebore warms the fragrance with a powdery base. Additional fragrance notes include mandarin, violet leaf, rose, patchouli and vanilla. Kenzo Winter Flowers is available in 50 ml Eau de Parfum, and can be found now at Sephora.

Roger & Gallet Cherry Tomato Bath & Shower Gel ~ scented body products
2008-09-15 03:08:00
The other morning, as I was pulling out of my driveway, I happened to notice the charming scene of my neighbor across the street watering some tall green plants in her backyard with a great big watering can. I can't be sure, but from a distance they looked like large leafy tomato plants. I was reminded of my own adventures in trying to grow tomatoes; one year I had cherry tomatoes which gave me plenty of fruit but none of it very good, and so the next year I tried the larger kind, which proceeded to overwhelm my garden with their large stalk-y bases and profuse green leaves. They also attracted some extremely odd looking (and rather large) caterpillars who took shelter in the dark shade provided by the plants, and which gave me a queasy feeling whenever I tried to pick a tomato. Whatever the reason, once again, the fruit was mealy and the skin too tough, and so this year I decided that perhaps my climate is not the best for tomatoes and to forego them altogether. Unexpectedly, the ...

Edward Steichen: Vogue?s gallery
2008-09-14 12:06:00
Edward Steichen: Vogue 's gallery We think of celebrity portraiture as a modern invention, yet Edward Steichen was taking glamorous photos of models and actresses decades before Mario Testino or Annie Leibovitz. Justine Picardie previews a new book of his ravishing images If the lucrative alliance between fashion and art, entwined with fame and commerce, seems like a 21st-century phenomenon, it nevertheless has its origins many decades ago, in the work of Edward Steichen. One of the founding fathers of a century of celebrity, he came to prominence as the chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair, hired in New York in 1923 by Condé Nast (the publisher who gave his name to a magazine empire).Gloria Swanson in 1924And Steichen's legacy is made evident in a sumptuous new book and touring exhibition (Edward Steichen: In High Fashion), filled with glossy portraits of everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill, and seductive shots of Katharine Hepburn, Gloria Swanson, M...

Alice Temperley: Coming home in style
2008-09-14 11:58:00
Alice Temperley: Coming home in style Alice Temperley is bringing her feel-good fashion back to London. Will she stay?On Tuesday, the British Fashion Council will hold a meeting with the respective heads of fashion councils from New York, Milan and Paris to determine the future of London Fashion Week, which starts tomorrow. New Yorkers want to push their week back, making London a mere four-day gap in the schedule. This is yet another blow to a city that, while renowned for its youthful creativity, has always struggled to maintain its position among the more influential fashion capitals. "London always gets the duff deal," admits the fashion designer Alice Temperley who, after three years in New York, is tomorrow returning to London to show her new collection, which she describes as "very clean, fresh and modern". Although she has been wooed back – a combination, she says, of wanting to reinforce the Britishness of her brand as well as practicalities (she's about to have her...

Nancy Dell?Olio launches new lingerie at London Fashion Week
2008-09-14 11:37:00
Nancy Dell 'Olio launches new lingerie at London Fashion Week Men of Britain, Nancy Dell'Olio is single and looking for love. She tells John Preston about life with and without Sven, her new career as a writer and why she'll be showing the world her underwear at London Fashion Week When Nancy Dell'Olio first came to England in 2001, the tabloid press greeted her arrival by falling into a state of collective ecstasy. It was partly that the contrast with her then-boyfriend, Sven-Goran Eriksson, was so marked. Whereas Sven looked as if he would barely raise an eyebrow if a fire extinguisher went off in his trousers, everything about Nancy was lavishly, determinedly upfront. She had big hair, big lips and a big personality to match. She would have stood out in any surroundings, but in grey, overcast London she was like a visitor from another, infinitely more exotic planet.Nancy Dell'Olio: 'Sometimes I think I am too sensitive for my own good. But I am also strong… strong and...

Patrick Demarchelier: ?I don?t like exhibitionist women??
2008-09-02 08:36:00
Patrick Demarchelier: 'I don't like exhibitionist women...' On the eve of a new exhibition, Diana's favourite photographer Patrick Demarchelier reveals what he really thinks about his subjects. Celia Walden reports As a teenager, Patrick Demarchelier used to charge his friends and family a few centimes each to take and retouch their photographs. Today, a portrait by Demarchelier - if he's inclined to take it - will set you back tens of thousands of pounds. But don't expect the blemishes to be airbrushed away: Demarchelier has now tired of what he describes as today's "perfection-obsessed" society and the photographers and image-makers who "want to turn all women into models".It is as the artist of 'those' pictures of Diana, Princess of Wales that Demarchelier is best known"That's where they go wrong," he says, traces of the little boy from Le Havre in northern France all but buried under an Americanised French accent (the product of 35 years spent living in New York). "I...

Pavé Diamond & Gemstone Jewelry
2008-09-01 13:43:00
A pavé setting is a style in which many small gemstones of the same shape are set in extremely close proximity. This mass formation effectively coats the metal surface. The gems are separated by and held in place by little beads of the setting metal. The result is what looks like a continuous surface of diamonds or other gems. The word Pavé comes from the French word for pavement. Diamond Pavé 1/7 Carat Pendant in 10k White Gold This graceful, diamond-shaped necklace is Pavé-set with 1/7 carat of sparkling diamonds in 10 karat white gold and suspends from a beautiful 18 inch white gold chain. Polished finish Spring Ring clasp Width: 1/2 inches Length: 2/3 inches $169 Pavé is a very low-tech style of setting in which a goldsmith will drill V-shaped holes into the selected area of a jewelry item (or possibly the entire item) and then place the corresponding size diamonds into the holes, and then with another hand tool form tiny beads of metal from around the edge of the diamond and ...

Obsessed to the point of disease
2008-08-31 18:55:00
The worst problem affecting the perfume industry, Turin says, is ?a complete lack of art direction. Nobody realises that every great perfume was art-directed by somebody who had a clear vision of what he wanted, above and beyond the perfumer. There is fantastic cohesion between the smell, the bottle, the colour, the packaging ? the whole thing is amazing, miraculous, not random. That doesn?t happen very often: now you?ve got some guy in marketing and a tie-in with some model. Art direction is why Serge Lutens [the famous creator of Shiseido Nombre Noire (sic)] is such a genius; he is obsessed to the point of disease?. ? Columnist India Knight talks to Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, authors of Perfumes: The Guide, in Chemical Romance at the UK Times Online. Thanks to Bela for the link! Fashion writer Colin McDowell will be talking to Luca Turin at a "Style Lecture" on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 6 pm in London. The event is open to the public (tickets are £20); see the details here.

Justine Picardie: plaid
2008-08-31 05:39:00
Justine Picardie: plaid After the tartan invasion seen on the catwalks, Justine Picardie checks out plaidOne cannot fail to notice the striking nature of tartan during a trip to the Edinburgh festival, particularly when confronted by the sight of the strapping doorman in a dashing kilt at the splendid Balmoral hotel. I am in Edinburgh to talk about my novel Daphne, and there is a plethora of bookish conversations to be had with other authors at the festival; but in between these it's hard to ignore the swaths of tartan. It's not just in Edinburgh, of course - the stuff is all over the latest autumn collections, most notably at Alexander McQueen and Dolce & Gabbana, where, by the look of things, they've been delving into the archives at Balmoral Castle, and coming out with monarchist fervour, rather than Scottish defiance. Because although tartan was traditionally associated with Highland rebels and Jacobite uprisings, it was Queen Victoria who made it fashionable, with her dem...

Vintage Knitwear for Modern Knitters: five free patterns to download

Vintage Knitwear for Modern Knitters: five free patterns to download Combine the current vogue for vintage with the craze for knitting and what do you get? A public hungry for old-fashioned patterns they can make at home. Eithne Farry reviews a new book that translates old designs for modern knitters, and, you can download five of the book's elegant patterns Download five free patterns from Vintage Knitwear here (pdf) If you flicked through magazines from the 1930s to the 1950s, the key look of those elegant decades would be a sophisticated, decidedly feminine look, where the glamorous knitwear took centre stage; the gamine silhouette of the 1920s - all straight lines and boyishly cropped hair - was abandoned for something altogether more seductive. The 1930s showcased neat little cardigans and jumpers in jewel-bright colours, decorated with quirky geometric buttons, which flattered slender waists and a trim torso. The 1940s saw knitwear adapt a bit of military chic with tapered j...
