Oscar nominees say they won't attend a picketed Academy Awards show
2008-01-23 19:16:00 Associated Press LOS ANGELES ? Hal Holbrook, a first-time Oscar nominee at 82, said he would skip the Academy Awards rather than cross picket lines. But it would sting. "You feel you lost something. An opportunity. You lost something, mostly if by some miracle in this extremely competitive category of supporting actor, if by some miracle I was chosen," said Holbrook, nominated for Into the Wild. "I think what you'd want to do is thank people," he continued, including his wife, his college drama teacher, Wild director Sean Penn and star Emile Hirsch. Holbrook isn't the only actor who promised to stay home Oscar night if there are pickets outside the Kodak Theatre. Members of the Screen Actors Guild have stood in solidarity with striking writers since their walkout began Nov. 5. But directors, documentarians, writers and other craftspeople ? from first-time nominees to Oscar alums ? also said Tuesday that they won't attend a picketed cer... With writers' strike, we're facing reality
2008-01-23 19:11:00 Here we go again. Another wave of reality TV has started to wash across the prime-time landscape. And while the controversial genre has been on the rise for the past seven years, network programmers appear to have found a few new ways to shock - a sensation viewers seem to love despite all the public griping.NBC's American Gladiators, a trash-camp orgy of muscle-bound combat, returned to the airwaves Jan. 6 with 12 million viewers and a lot of morning-after chatter. Last week, the most successful series in TV history, American Idol, rebooted for a new season with an opening night cast of cringe-ably bad performers and an audience of 33.2 million. These and a slew of other returning shows will be joined in the next three months by 25 prime-time hours of new reality programs. The newcomers range from Oprah's Big Giveaway (ABC), an Oprah Winfrey production that makes a game out of philanthropy, to When Women Rule the World (Fox), a contest with 12 hard-core male chauvinists suddenly c... Kristen Bell joins 'Heroes'
2007-10-19 16:11:00 NBC's "Heroes " (9 p.m. Monday, WPXI) has been a bit disappointing this season as it keeps its characters apart for too long and coughs up answers to lingering questions too infrequently, a marked contrast to last season when revelations seemed to happen on a weekly basis. Monday's episode inched closer to setting things right by telling fans what happened to Matt Parkman's wife (she cheated on him and got pregnant and the baby belongs to the other man) and by bringing a "Heroes" regular, evil Sylar (Greentree's own Zachary Quinto) into the Mexican twins story that had previously dragged down the show (if we don't know them well, we won't care about them). The prospect of actress Kristen Bell ("Veronica Mars") joining the cast next week for at least 13 episodes offers reason to hope that "Heroes" will soon get back on track. Bell is the rarest of Hollywood commodities: A smart, articulate, charming actor who clearly has her head screwed on straight, as my dad would say.Read M... More About: News

The documentary series tracks the ups and downs of the band as its tries to break into the American country music business. Yes, it's a documentary, not a reality show.
