Green Sea Turtles-Photos
2008-01-29 13:38:00
NOAA photosGREEN SEA TURTLES Green sea turtles are reptiles whose ancestors evolved on land and returned to the sea to live about 150 million years ago. They are one of the few species so ancient that they watched the dinosaurs evolve and become extinct. The sea turtle's body is wonderfully adapted to life in the ocean. Their shells are lighter and more streamlined than those of their terrestrial counterparts, and their front and rear limbs have evolved into flippers making them efficient and graceful swimmers, capable of swimming long distances in a relatively short period of time. Sea turtles have been known to move through the water as fast as 35 mph. When active, sea turtles swim to the surface every few minutes in order to breathe. When sleeping or resting, which usually occurs at night, adult sea turtles can remain underwater for more than 2 hours without breathing. This is due to the fact that turtles are capable of containing higher concentrations of carbon dioxide in their...

NOAA photosLeatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)FAMILY: Dermochelyidae STATUS: Endangered throughout its range (Federal Register, June 2, 1970). DESCRIPTION: The leatherback is the largest, deepest diving, and most migratory and wide ranging of all sea turtles. The adult leatherback can reach 4 to 8 feet in length and 500 to 2000 pounds in weight. Its shell is composed of a mosaic of small bones covered by firm, rubbery skin with seven longitudinal ridges or keels. The skin is predominantly black with varying degrees of pale spotting; including a notable pink spot on the dorsal surface of the head in adults. A toothlike cusp is located on each side of the gray upper jaw; the lower jaw is hooked anteriorly. The paddle-like clawless limbs are black with white margins and pale spotting. Hatchlings are predominantly black with white flipper margins and keels on the carapace. Jellyfish are the main staple of its diet, but it is also known to feed on sea urchins, squid, crus...

Safe, Sustainable Fish: Easy Greening
2008-01-27 17:16:00
By Melissa Breyer, Producer, Care2 Green Living By understanding the threats that the marine environment is facing we can make informed decisions about eating fish in a sustainable way?and by learning about pollution issues as they relate to the water, we can steer clear of contaminated fish. Here are the issues, then we will show you how to navigate a non-baffling trip to the fish market. SUSTAINABILITY Habitat DamageThe ocean's bottom is a vibrant and thriving ecosystem, that is until a bottom trawler or heavy dredge net crushes through leaving a rubble of the 700-year-old coral and other fragile life there. The living seafloor needs centuries to grow back, but with "trawl fleets" chugging along to keep up with our hunger for fish, the seafloor never gets a change to recuperate. This may be the single worst harm done to the marine environment by man. If you're able, find out the method by which the fish was caught. Many restaurants and stores are now listing the fishing method...

Environmental Groups Call for Increased Protected of Coral Reefs as World M

Many-spotted sweet lips in Solomon Islands coral reef. Photo © Hal BeralWASHINGTON, DC — January 24, 2008 — As 17 countries and 30 organizations launch the International Year of the Reef today, three major environmental groups – World Wildlife Fund, The Nature Conservancy and Conservation International – call on governments, businesses, scientists, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world to vastly increase actions to protect coral reefs. The International Year of the Reef 2008, designated by the International Coral Reef Initiative, is a worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and to motivate action to protect them.In 2003, the World Parks Congress urged that at least 20 to 30 percent of each marine habitat should be protected by 2012. At current levels of effort, this goal will not be achieved for coral reefs. Given the importance of these systems for ocean life and human well-being, and the special stresse...

Nature picture credits: Photo © Chris Dascher(swimming Hawksbill turtle); Photo © Peter Heiss (closeup).Meet the Turtles Planet Earth is home to about 300 species of turtle. These range from small freshwater species to marine giants. The source of many of our great-grandmothers’ tortoiseshell combs and hair pieces, the hawksbill turtle can be found in tropical and subtropical coastal waters across the globe. Found in the waters of 82 nations, the largest populations center in the Caribbean Sea, the Seychelles, Indonesia and Australia. Individuals often migrate hundreds of miles to nest at the beaches where they were born.Hawksbill females are exceptionally fast nesters, able to complete a nest of about 130 eggs in 60 to 90 minutes. Temperature is essential in sex determination. A nest of 86.5 degrees F or greater for instance will produce only females. Those hatchlings that evade predation and human harvesting typically spend 1-3 years at sea before moving closer to shore, along r...

Mysterious Greenland Shark lives in polar waters-Photos
2008-01-25 16:55:00
Photographs by Nick Caloyianis Huge Greenland shark as it approaches Harbor Branch’s Johnson-Sea-Link submersible Credit: HARBOR BRANCH/Youngbluthsee the VideoSomniosus microcephalus -- known as the the sleeper shark, Greenland shark, or gurry shark -- lives in polar waters all year round. It is a large shark: lengths of 8 to 14 feet are not unusual, and the largest measured specimen was 21 feet long. (Only the whale shark, basking shark, and great white shark are known to reach a greater length.) This shark eats a wide variety of food, from fish of its native polar waters to seals, carrion, flesh from dead whales, and even (in one captured specimen) an entire reindeer. The Greenland shark has a reputation for being very sluggish, but its diet includes salmon and other fast-swimming fishes. This shark suffers from a parasite called a copepod that attaches itself to the cornea of the eye: Most of them have one copepod -- a whitish-yellow creature from 3 mm. to 3 inches in size --...

Corals of the Egyptian Red Sea-Photos
2008-01-24 02:03:00
Corals belong to a group of animals called Cnidarians. This includes hard and soft corals, sea fans, gorgonians, jelly fish and sea anemones. Amongst other common characteristics is the presence of stinging cells (nematocysts) which are used to catch prey.A single coral animal is a polyp - the attractive "flowery" item looking like an anemone. The soft coral shown above is actually a colony of animals, each connected to its neighbour by living tissues. Soft corals are not reef-building, although they do secrete limestone. In their case this is as internal crystals called sclerites or spicules. Because soft corals do not have large skeletons, they grow faster than hard coralsEight feathery tentacles surround the coral's mouth and whip food into it. They filter-feed: removing plankton from water flowing around the colony. Relatively recent data on soft corals indicates that they feed on very small planktonic particles, such as single-celled algae, rather than larger larvae as had pre...

Killer Whales--Birth and Care of Young
2007-11-21 22:25:00
Killer whale calves are born either tail-first or head-first.Gestation.The gestation period of a killer whale is about 17 months -- the longest known of all cetaceans. Pregnancies followed at the SeaWorld Adventure Parks have ranged from 15 to 18 months.Birth seasons.1. In the Pacific Northwest calving is thought to be bi-modally seasonal, with most births occurring in the spring and fall.2. In other areas of the world, researchers have seen calves born throughout the year with no statistical evidence for birth seasons.Frequency of births.1. Based on limited data collected from populations at sea and in zoological facilities, a female may bear a calf every three to five years, although a decade may pass before some have another successful birth.2. As with most marine mammals, usually only one calf is born at a time. Two occurrences of surviving twins have been documented in the wild.Calving.1. Calves are born in the water. The majority of deliveries seen by humans have been tail-fir...

Emperor Penguins-Worlds Biggest Penquin
2007-11-21 21:47:00
Emperor penguins are the largest of the 17 penguin species.Emperor penguins can be 3 to 4 feet tall. They can weigh anywhere from 65 to 90 lb.They can dive to depths of 900 feet (about 300 meters), staying under water for minutes on end. Dives to depths of 1750 feet and as long as 18 minutes have been recorded for the Emperor Penguin.Penguins can not fly, like other bird species. They can only swim with flippers which are modified wings about a foot long that are specifically meant for swimming. These flippers help them travel at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour. They do not have feathers like normal birds either; instead they have scaly feathers to better aid in swimming and which are water resistant so they do not get cold in the freezing Antartic waters. Their body is very streamlined so they can efficiently glide through the water with little resistance, helping swim faster and easier. Their feet are like shaped like paddles, making swimming much easier for them. To further aid th...

Garibaldi, the state saltwater fish of California--Photos
2007-11-21 14:20:00
The garibaldi or garibaldi damselfish (Hypsypops rubicundus) is a fish of the damselfish family that is native to the northern subtropical parts of the Pacific Ocean, ranging from Monterey Bay to Guadalupe Island, Baja California .Garibaldis are renowned for their brilliant orange color and grow up to 30 cm in length. They live at depths of up to 30 meters, usually in association with reefs and typically over rocky sea-bottoms. They feed mainly on invertebrates that they remove from the rocks. Adult garibaldis maintain a home territory. The male clears a sheltered nest site within his territory, and the female then deposits eggs within the nest. The male subsequently guards the nest until the eggs hatch. The garibaldi is the official "marine fish" of the state of California and is protected in California coastal waters. They are commonly seen around Santa Catalina Island, California. The average gestation period for the Garibaldi fish is 19-21 days.An interesting feature of the Garabald...

Florida Manatee Facts: Learn About Our Gentle Giants
2007-11-21 13:51:00
The coastal waters of Citrus County, Florida , where spring-fed rivers flow into the Gulf of Mexico, are a favorite habitat of manatees. These very large mammals spend their entire lives in water, coming to the surface only as necessary to get a breath of air every minute or so, depending on their level of activity.Citrus County?s manatees, known as West Indian manatees and by the subspecies name the Florida manatee, are related to West African manatees, a creature called a dugong, and a now-extinct animal called the Steller?s sea cow.The word ?manatee? is derived from a Carib native word meaning ?breast? and probably refers to the suckling of baby manatees at their mother?s breast.Manatees are large animals.Adults weigh between 900 and 1200 pounds, and measure 9 to 10 feet in length. Their bodies are shaped like an elongated oval with a paddle-shaped tail providing effective propulsion. Baby manatees come into the world weighing between 60 and 70 lbs.Florida manatees have a low metab...

Whale Swims up Amazon Tributary
2007-11-20 19:41:00
An 18-foot (5.4-meter) minke whale ran aground on a sandbar in Brazil's Amazon jungle, some 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from the Atlantic Ocean, Brazilian media reported Friday. The Globo television agency broadcast images of dozens of people gathered along the Tapajs River splashing water on the animal, whose back and dorsal fin were exposed to the hot Amazon sun. Sea creatures rarely venture so far into fresh water."It apparently got separated from its group and swam upstream," biologist Fabio Luna said in a televised interview from the site. "It's very unusual."Scientists were working to dislodge the mammal and return it to the ocean. They said it weighed about 12 tons. The whale beached itself Wednesday near Santarm in Par state, Brazil's Environmental Protection Agency said, according to the Globo newspaper. Phone calls to the agency were not immediately answered. The creature reportedly is a minke whale. With an average length of about 23 feet (7 meters), minkes are the...

The Purple Sea Urchin-Photos
2007-11-12 21:28:00
The purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) is found in the Pacific Ocean ranging from Alaska to Cedros Island in Baja California (Ricketts and Calvin, 1948; Ebert et al., 1994). Although the purple sea urchin is abundant in low intertidal zones along open coastline, it can also be found in the mid and low-tidal zones of protected coastlines (Ricketts and Calvin, 1948). Reproduction most commonly occurs during winter and spring (Russell, 1987; Ebert and Russell, 1988; Ebert et al., 1994) and larvae need at least five weeks of development before settling (Ebert et al., 1994).The sea urchin is an echinoderm, a type of marine animal that is typically several centimeters in length and has pentamerous radial symmetry. Pentamerous radial symmetry refers to a body with five equal parts originating from a center point. A classic example of pentamerous symmetry is the starfish. All echinoderms have an internal skeleton made of calcareous ossicles. In sea urchins, the ossicles are f...

Whale Shark Photos-40 foot long
2007-11-10 17:23:00
Whale Shark ProfileAs the largest fish in the sea, weighing up to 60 tons (54.4 metric tons), whale sharks have an enormous menu from which to choose. Fortunately for most sea-dwellers?and us!?their favorite meal is plankton. They scoop these tiny plants and animals up, along with any small fish that happen to be around, with their colossal gaping mouths while swimming close to the water's surface. The whale shark, like the world's second largest fish, the basking shark, is a filter feeder. In order to feed, it juts out its formidably sized jaws and sucks in everything in the vicinity. It then shuts its mouth, forcing water to filter out of its gills. Everything that remains becomes the giant shark's dinner. The whale shark's flattened head sports a blunt snout above its mouth with short barbels protruding from its nostrils. Its back and sides are gray to brown with white spots among pale vertical and horizontal stripes, and its belly is white. Its two dorsal fins are set rearward...

Prehistoric Sea Monster-Protosphyraena ,8 foot long carnivore
2007-11-10 17:23:00
Protosphyraena ProfileProtosphyraena was a medium-size predatory fish of the Late Cretaceous seas with a long swordlike snout and bladelike teeth positioned to stab fleeing prey. What's more, one of these ancient fish had long, bony pectoral fins with leading edges serrated like saw blades. While the exact purpose of these sawlike fins is a matter of scientific debate, no doubt this fish was armed with lots of potentially offensive weaponry.Fully grown adult Protosphyraena averaged between six and nine feet (two and three meters) long, an unremarkable stature in oceans ruled by mosasaurs and plesiosaurs that grew more than 35 feet (11 meters) long.Complete skeletons of Protosphyraena are rare, which may suggests that either scavengers devoured them or the corpses drifted as they decayed and fell apart. Like some Late Cretaceous sea monsters, Protosphyraenamost likely went extinct 65 million years ago.Fast FactsType: Prehistoric Diet: CarnivoreSize: Length, 8 ft (2.4 m)Protection sta...
