St. Ann under mud and water
2008-04-18 18:07:00
Wow, to look at some of these pictures it’s hard to believe that these are the same streets I’ve walked time and time again, it looks like a disaster zone. On Wednesday there was a storm system that brought a barrage of rain into the area and subsequently flooded a number of districts within the parish of St. Ann. While the rain was the culprit, it seems that the mud is the residual issue, there are reports that in some areas there are 12 inches of mud in the road. There have been no reported injuries but traffic is a mess and many of the shopping centers have been flooded and/or closed temporarily. Over mining and construction around the Ocho Rios area are being blamed for the mudslides, there are also concerns that diseases could be spread if the area is not properly and quickly cleaned-up. Listen to Mariah Carey featuring Damian Marley-Cruise Control
2008-04-16 00:27:00
Here’s Mariah Carey ’s, Cruise Control , featuring Damian Marley. It’s one of the singles on her latest album E=MC2 (The Emancipation of MiMi to the second power, in case you were wondering), which was released today on Island Records. I like the song but like with so many other artists, I can’t help but chuckle when they attempt to sing in a “reggae accent”. I still got’s love for you though MiMi. Thanks to RealVibez.com for the heads up, check out their channel on Imeem for the latest in reggae videos and songs. ShareThis

Congratulations to April Jackson, Miss Jamaica Universe 2008
2008-04-14 18:41:00
Congratulations to April Jackson , she was crowned Miss Jamaica Universe on this past Saturday at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston, Jamaica; and will go on to represent Jamaica in Vietnam, at the Miss Universe pageant, later this year. Keyshia Cole was the celebrity guest performer at the event and by all accounts performed wonderfully, although over zealous fans and a lack of security were a notable problem. Unfortunately, it seems those weren’t the only problems, it seems some fans were disappointed with the pagaent panel’s decision to crown Miss Jackson and wanted first runner-up Doneika Plowright to win. You can view a multitude of reasons and opinions on the issue here. We all know there’s nothing like a beauty pageant to stir up beauty and inner-cultural divides. Never-the-less, congratulations Miss Jackson! Pic: Jamaica Gleaner ShareThis

Beenie Man disses the Marleys
2008-04-11 06:09:00
I know, I know, why would Beenie would do anything else to draw more problems on himself? I don’t really know. If you read my article a couple of weeks ago, then you know he’s already involved in tax and baby mama drama at the moment. Well now he’s gone and allegedly dissed the Marley clan. At a recent concert in the Bahamas at the Bristol Wines and Spirits compound, Beenie Man was performing when it’s reported either his mike was cut or a Marley family friend informed him that his time was up, and he proceeded to say that “Stephan Marley is a “*****hole”” and that Damian Marley and the rest of the family could “keep stepping”. He ironically gave shout outs to Kymani Marley and his friends, and paid respect to Rita Marley earlier during his performance. Rumor has it that this episode stems from an on-going feud between Beenie and the Marleys, based on a comment that Beenie Man made during an interview he did some time ago, in which he boasted that he had more nu...
The 2000 Jamaican women’s sprint team could be awarded gold medals by IOC
2008-04-10 07:15:00
The IOC (International Olympic Committee) wants to award the 2000 Olympic, Jamaican women’s sprint team, the gold medals for the 1600-meter and possibly the bronze medals for the 200-meter relays, after disqualifying not only Marion Jones but the entire US relay teams in both events for their performance in Sydney. All of this of course, is a result of Marion Jones pleading guilty to using steroids last year and returning all of her medals (she was officially stripped by the IOC in December and is currently serving a 6-month prison sentence here in Texas for perjury and check fraud). As a result of Jones’ cheating, all results for the races she competed in are now considered “tainted”. While no final decision has been reached, it’s believed that the IOC on Thursday will recommend that both US teams be disqualified. The US sprinters are refusing to give up their medals and have hired a lawyer to defend them. There are two more board meetings between now ...

I-Tunes bans Buju Banton, T.O.K. & Elephant Man
2008-04-10 05:19:00
Things are really, really heating up for Jamaican artists, and the country as a whole when it comes to homophobia. Gay rights activists are on the warpath and are taking no prisoners against reggae artists who have homophobic lyrics (past and present) and those who support them. Earlier this week, I reported that Red Stripe was pulling all sponsorship from music events (which some believed to be a move based on protests from gay rights activists), well the latest casualties in this all out war are Buju Banton , TOK and Elephant Man , their respective songs Boom Bye Bye, Chi Chi Man, and Log On have all been pulled from I-Tunes after Canadian gay rights groups SMM and Egale sent letters requesting that the music be removed. I-Tunes took the request a step further and removed ALL albums that the songs were featured on, including compilations. In related news it’s been reported that Bounty Killer has had several European concerts canceled due to protests by gay rights group to the...
Cedella Marley Booker has passed away at 81
2008-04-09 17:09:00
The mother of Bob Marley , Cedella Marley Booker, passed away on yesterday, April 8, 2008, in Miami. Her grandson, Kymani Marley spoke with the Miami Herald, stating she “has always been a very loving, caring and supporting person in my life. She was always there to help me — even when I didn’t ask for help, she knew I needed help. She had that instinct to know when things were wrong and had the courage to fix it.” Our condolences go out to the entire Marley family during their time of bereavement. Red Stripe Beer pulls sponsorship from all music events…but what’s the
2008-04-07 04:50:00
It’s Sunday night and I don’t normally post on the weekends, but I read this story and it just irked me to the point that I was drawn to my laptop to give my two cents. It just really ticks me off when corporations, or even people in general, try to insult the consumer’s or public’s intelligence, now with that being said let me explain to you what I’m talking about.:) Red Stripe has put the music industry in Jamaica on notice saying that it will no longer sponsor music events (this directly cripples two of Jamaica’s largest reggae shows, Reggae Sumfest and Sting) due to the “negative trend of glorifying violence…”, the company went on to say that “the move was in response to concerns that have been expressed about this trend by Jamaicans at home and abroad”. Stop the press right there! I’m sorry but I’m not buying either one of those statements, I’m just not. Let me first say that, had the previous...

First days of free healthcare in Jamaica going well
2008-04-03 14:19:00
While politicians here in the US still flap their lips and in-fight about free health care, Jamaica has put their words into action and made health care free for everyone. Last year, previous Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller made health care free for children, and as of April 1, reigning Prime MInister Bruce Golding made health care free for all adults at public hospitals. Reports are that things are running smoothly thus far…the budget for healthcare is now second only to national security in Jamaica. Way to go JA ….both parties working to help the people they serve….American politicians get it together!!! ShareThis

Jamaican born suspect in Orlando explosive parts incident traumatized by wa
2008-04-03 13:43:00
We now have a name for the face of Kevin Brown, the man whom officials held in custody on Tuesday at Orlando International Airport for attempting to check-in luggage which held bomb making explosives. His family is reporting that Brown was traumatized by his serving in two army missions in Iraq, and the questionable circumstances surrounding the death of his mother in 2005. While Brown was serving in Iraq, his mother Sandra McLeod was found murdered in the computer room of a hotel in Negril, an autopsy reported that she had been strangled. Three men have been charged with the murder. Brown told the FBI that he wanted to show friends how to build explosives like he saw in Iraq and planned to bomb a tree stump once he arrived in Jamaica, he was en route to visit his cousin in Montego Bay when he was arrested. Lil Wayne says he wants to be the next Bob Marley…
2008-04-03 04:23:00
Lil’ Wayne is featured in this month’s issue of Vibe Magazine, and when asked about his legacy, this was Wayne’s response: “I wanna be a Bob Marley. I wanna be a Tupac – their lives mean so much…I wanna mean so much after I’m gone. Y’all still gotta do shows, tributes, dedicate 20 whole minutes to me on every show. I want that.” Pretty lofty aspirations when it comes to being Bob Marley…I just hope he lays off the syrup in the meantime. Read more here: TheYBF.com ShareThis

2008-04-02 02:08:00

The Transportation Security Administration noticed the man’s strange behavior and mannerisms and then monitored his bags as they went through screening, it was then that the suspicious materials were discovered. Maxi Priest the new frontman for UB40
2008-04-01 22:24:00
Reports out of Europe are that Maxi Priest is replacing Ali Campbell of UB40. The merger between UB40 and Maxi Priest is not surprising since there have been rumors of him joining the group since he toured with them last year. Ali Campbell resigned from the group in January amidst problems with the group’s management but in a public statement wished the remaining members of the band well. Maxi Priest has already recorded Bob Marley’s I Shot The Sheriff and more music is anticipated in the near future. ShareThis
