Special thanks to Mahtab Ali
2008-03-28 15:57:00
I want to say thanks to Wordpress expert Mahtab Ali, who has helped me SO much this past couple of weeks to get my site up and going. I’d made some coding errors and couldn’t fix them and he stepped right in and fixed them all, plus some. So, if you have a Wordpress site or are thinking about getting one and need some professional help, I highly recommend him. He’s currently working on a website for his business, but in the meantime you can contact him at MahtabAlly@gmail.com with your questions and to request his rates.

The Marley Biopic is being refused licensing rights to Bob Marley’s music
2008-03-24 19:55:00
Although Rita Marley is the executive producer of the biopic that will highlight her life with Bob Marley, the family is refusing the production company, the Weinstein Company, access to Bob Marley’s catalog of music. Why? It’s reported that a competing documentary on Marley’s life, which will be directed by Martin Scorsese, is the source of the problem. The Scorsese documentary already licensed Marley’s music, and the family fears that the Weinstein’s biopic will interfere with the success of the documentary, as both are slated to be released within a few months of each other (the Weinstein biopic has a release date is late 2009 and the Scorcese documentary has a February 2010 release date). Rita Marley has stated that, “When I sold the film rights to my book (For the Weinstein film) the contract did not include any rights to use my husband’s music.” Ziggy Marley is the executive producer of the Scorsese led documentary. Can reggae artists survive bootlegging?
2008-03-16 00:52:00
The recent downfall of Audiomaxxx (not familiar with this scandalous site, then click here) brings to the forefront a common issue for all recording artists alike, but especially reggae artists. How can artists “eat a food” when their music is being copied and bootlegged at home and around the world with no credit or profits being given to the artists, producers, or DJ’s? It’s a musical free for all and the artists are on the multi-million dollar losing end. Unless a reggae artist tours or performs ALOT, has achieved mainstream success like artists Elephant Man, Sean Paul, or Beenie Man, or has other profitable business ventures then they most likely are not living too comfortably and bootlegging is a major reason for it. It’s a complicated vicious cycle being that reggae music is unlike a lot of other genres where artists typically release a couple of singles and then drop their albums. Many reggae artists perform on tracks with other artists and drop ...

Suspect in Wendy’s shooting was born in Jamaica
2008-03-07 15:44:00
Alburn Edward Blake, the suspect who shot five people including himself on last Monday, was born in Jamaica according to reports by several media outlets. 60-year-old Blake walked into a West Palm Beach Wendy’s fast food restaurant, and began to open fire on patrons at random, killing a paramedic and finally himself. Blake was a handyman and was described by his girlfriend as “demented” yet “extremely intelligent” and physically abusive. Blake reportedly owned a maintenance and handyman company several years ago but at the time was believed to be unemployed. It is believed that Blake may have been depressed over financial problems.

2008-03-06 20:56:00
Rita Marley wants her “daughter-in-law” Lauryn Hill to portray her in the upcoming Bob Marley biopic she is producing next year. Lauryn Hill is married to the son of Bob Marley and Janet Hunt, Rohan Marley, and has 5 children with him. The Weinstein Co has optioned the rights to Rita’s autobiography, “No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley” and production will begin in early 2009 and have an anticipated release date of sometime later in the year. Owners of reggae label John Shop Records face life in prison
2008-03-06 19:40:00
The NY Daily News is reporting that 8 members of a Bronx gang that sold an alleged $1 million in marijuana every week were convicted on Wednesday in federal court. It is reported that the gang used the money from their marijuana sales to fund John Shop Records, a reggae record label that featured artists such as Sizzla and Wyclef John. It’s reported that the gang flew 2000 pounds of weed a week from California to New York for over 7 years. All of the convicted face anywhere from 25 years to life behind bars. What a shame.

DJ Kool Herc’s home known as “The Birthplace of Hip Hop” protected fr
2008-03-06 19:11:00
The Bronx apartment building where Clive Campbell, aka DJ Kool Herc, moved to in 1973 after immigrating from Jamaica and the official “Birth Place of Hip Hop”, has been saved from being sold to real estate investors. The deal to sell the 100-unit apartment building at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue was rejected by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development due to restrictions on the financing of the sale under current rent restrictions. (In other words, the proposed purchase price of $7.5 million for the apartment building was significantly overpriced and raised concern that the building would be bought, renovated, and rents raised to an unaffordable level for the current tenants. ) Under the state’s Mitchell Lama housing program many housing developments in recent years have been “flipped” for profit instead of being developed for the betterment of the community and families in need. When commenting on the issue, Kool Herc stated that, “It&rsqu...

Did You Know They Were Jamaican?: Minister Louis Farrakhan
2008-03-06 18:38:00
Leader of the Nation of Islam, and one of the most charismatic and controversial black leaders of our times, The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan is a full-blooded West Indian. Louis Eugene Walcott was born on May 11, 1933 in the Bronx, NY to a mother who was a native of St. Kitts and Nevis and a father who was a Jamaican cab driver from New York (but was not active in his life). At a young age Farrakhan was introduced to the performing arts and became a gifted violinist, calypso singer, and dancer. At the age of 22, Louis Farrakhan was invited to attend the Nation of Islam’s Saviours’ Day convention and three months later dedicated his life to The Nation. In recent years Minister Farrakhan’s health has been declining due to his battle with prostate cancer and an ulcer but he still remains the National Representative of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and The Nation of Islam.

2008-03-01 04:24:00
Alex of the group TOK (featured on the left in the picture above), lost his father this week. After suffering a stroke and a subsequent heart attack Derrick McCalla died on Saturday. This is the third recent loss for Alex, his brother Gavin was murdered and his death was the motivation for TOK’s most successful single to date, Footprints. He also recently lost his grandmother. Joe Gibbs died on last Thursday of a heart attack in Jamaica. Gibbs was a well respected producer who was influential during the late 60’s and 70’s roots era. Gibbs was 65 years old. It’s being reported that comedian Real Idiot was killed by police in Jamaica, details so far have been sketchy but reports are that drugs and a firearm were involved.
