Free download: Bugle “Doh Be No” (Tear Up Jeans Riddim) and Mad Cobra
2008-06-04 20:21:00 Courtesy of Fader Magazine, you can download Bugle’s “Doh Be No” on the Tear Up Jeans Riddim , and reggae legend, Mad Cobra’s, ” More Than Talk” on the Corduroy Riddim. If you aren’t familiar with Bugle, you should be, he’s one of reggae’s biggest upcoming stars and part of the DASECA Productions triad, check him out on MySpace . He has a really conscience and introspective style, which can be a bit overwhelming at times, but is a nice change from the reggae mainstays of bullets, rump shaking, and hustling. I also like that little “falsetto thing” he does with his voice. You can also check out his hit with Movado, called “Set Me Free ” on his MySpace page, and download it free here. You can download “Doh Be No” and “More Than Talk” here. ShareThis More About: Download

Sean Kingston and Richie Stephens kick off Caribbean Heritage Month with Ja
2008-06-03 21:48:00 It looks like fun times were had by all at Jamaica Day on yesterday in NYC. As I posted on yesterday, June is Caribbean American Heritage Month, and Jamaica Day was the first event held in celebration of the month. The event kicked off at 11:00 at the South Street Seaport, Pier 17 and was an all day event filled with food, entertainment, and of course music by both Sean Kingston and Richie Stephens. The event was also a book launch for the popular book series Beacon Street Girls latest release, “Katani’s Jamaican Holiday”, which went on sale yesterday. The author of the series, Addie Suartz, was on hand as well to read, and meet and greet with fans. Nothing like reggae and a good book to get summer started right! Video: There’s Nothin’-Sean Kingston featuring Juelz Santana and The DE
2008-06-03 00:43:00 I like this song by Sean Kingston , it’s fun and light-hearted and not as repetitive as Beautiful Girls. I can see this staying on rotation for me this summer, especially on my road trips. Fellas, the lady in the video is Elan Luz and she’s 1/3 of the group The DEY, if you aren’t familiar with the group you can catch them at the end of the video performing Give You the World and you check them out on MySpace as well. What do you think of the song/video? Check it out here. ShareThis More About: Video , Juelz Santana

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world!!
2008-06-01 21:11:00 Jamaican runner, Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world! The 6′4″, 21-year old set a new world record of 9.72 seconds, last night in New York at the Reebok Grand Prix at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. The meet was reported to have been abuzz all night and felt like “Jamaica Night” with the overwhelming number of Jamaican fans who turned out to support Bolt. The Jamaican national anthem was even sung during a rain delay and reportedly the Jamaican fans went wild. Bolt who had previously only run the 100 meters four times (he normally runs the 200 meters), says he only began to run the 100 meters for speed practice and to improve his starts. This new “practice” plan landed him the second fastest time in history earlier last month, when he ran 9.76 in the 100 meters, which at the time was only .02 seconds off the former world-record holder Asafa Powell’s, 9.74. The stage is now set for Asafa and Usain to meet during the Jamaican ... More About: World , The World , Jamaican
Poison Dart DJ’s Murdered in Tampa Bay area
2008-05-31 05:43:00 Poison Dart DJ’s Antone “Tony Montana”Geargo-Neely (some reports are that he was not part of Poison Dart, but had his own sound system), Michael “Chris Rock” Rottigan, and their friend Kevin “Bumba Blaze” Jordache Webster were murdered last Saturday, in what appears to be a senseless act of retaliation, from an incident which occurred the previous weekend. Around 2:40 am on Saturday, May 24th police were called out to The Thunderbird Bar, where Poison Dart reportedly played every Friday night, due to a noise complaint. Once police arrived on the scene they found Antone Geargo Neely and Kevin Jordache Webster dead on the scene, Michael Rottigan died later at an area hospital, all three men were the victims of gunshot wounds. Police immediately suspected that the three were specifically targeted, because the club had at least 300 patrons and no one else was injured during the brutal crime. Investigators have identified and issued a warrant fo... More About: Bay Area , Area , Tampa , Tampa Bay , Poison

Did You Know They Were Jamaican?-Grace Jones
2008-05-29 00:19:00 Most of us remember Grace Jones from her crazy antics in Boomerang alongside that ageless diva, Eartha Kitt and Eddie Murphy, but did you know that she was born in Spanishtown, Jamaica on May 19, 1948 as Grace Mendoza? Grace along with her brother, ( world renowned minister Bishop Noel Jones) relocated with her parents to the US in the mid 60’s where she began a career first as a model and then a somewhat successful singer, primarily overseas, and even inked a record deal with Island Records. Known for her iconic stature, distinctive voice, and flair for all things extreme, Grace Jones has managed to transcend the limitations of time, gender, and race to become a legend in her own right. Junior Reid and Buju Banton square off at Best of the Best 2008
2008-05-28 19:16:00 Shows like Best of the Best are part of the reason why I wished I lived in Florida sometimes. Unfortunately, I didn’t attend the show that went down this past Sunday, in Broward, Florida but here’s a good review of the action that occured. Hailed as the North American version of Jamaica’s Sumfest, Best of the Best brings out the finest performers in reggae such as Super Cat, Beenie Man, Assassin, and Sizzla. Junior Reid performed in lieu of Mavado who wasn’t able to get his immigration paperwork in order in time to attend the event (ditto this situation for Bounty Killer as well) , and rumor has that Reidhad some choice and downright offensive words for Buju Banton backstage, referring to him as a “battyman” and refusing to shake his hand. I’m not sure what the history is behind the incident and neither artist has issued an official statement regarding the incident, but it is reported that Buju was the bigger man and simply walked away from ... The truth about the Mavado Real McKoy Sneaker by Nike
2008-05-28 17:22:00 In the process of reading my normal blogs and websites this morning, I was surprised to see that there is a recurring rumor in the dance hall blogosphere about Mavado partnering with Nike on a sneaker called The Real McKoy (you can check it out here), so of course I followed the link and checked it out myself. I must admit that I liked the shoe, I personally wouldn’t buy it just because I don’t like to wear sneakers unless I’m working out or plan to do a lot of walking, and not-to-mention that those colors are not going to match too much other than my, “I love JA” wardrobe. After reading all the comments from readers across the web doubting the validity of the shoe, and with me being the investigator I am, I just had to get to the bottom of it, besides I just wanted to see for myself the confirmation that shoe giant Nike had partnered with reggae’s “gangsta for life”, especially in light of all of the “political correctness&rdquo... YawdFromAbroad has a new look!
2008-05-23 17:55:00 It’s been a R-E-A-L-L-Y long month for me while working on the site. It’s taken a lot of blood, sweat, almost tears, and even some hard cold cash but I’ve gotten it done finally. I had to update the site mainly because I’m a perfectionist of sorts when it comes to this site,I just want the best for it and I believe that readers want great content and a lot of visuals. Most blogs and websites only allow you to see a week’s worth of posts at any one time which is really limiting, some of my most popular posts were written some time ago, so with my new set-up you have a lot of options to search for the topics you want. If you left a message over the last month, there is a good chance that I accidentally deleted it at one point during this re-design process and unfortunately I can’t get them back, so I sincerely apologize if you had a question that I never answered or a comment that I never responded to. I want to say thank you so much to Rick Potratz...
Rock City…why do these brothers have me “Losin It”?
2008-05-21 02:01:00 It’s been a busy day, but I had to get this one out today. I’ve been jammin the hit single “Losin It”, since it was e-mailed to me last week, along with all the other downloads on Rock City’s aka “The Black Beatles” MySpace page. I must admit, these brothers have some serious talent and a knack for killin’ a remix. Hailing from the St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, brothers Theron and Timothy are a triple threat, not only do they sing and rap but they also write, and were featured on Akon’s double platinum album Konvicted. Rock City is now signed to Akon’s label, Kon Live, alongside the reigning Best Duo in Reggae, Brick and Lace, who too are siblings. The talented duo have also penned songs for, and been featured on the albums of Janet Jackson, Mario, Cupid, Usher, Eve, and Sean Kingston to name a few. The brothers will soon be dropping a mix tape and have taped a video for Losin’ It. You can check out their songs on thei... More About: Brothers

Producer Don Corleon can’t escape the mix-up
2008-05-20 23:54:00 I really enjoy producer Don Corleon’s music, and he’s not bad to look at either. LOL! Needless to say, I’ve heard some of the rumors that have been surfacing lately, especially regarding him and Alaine being an item and even married, so I was happy he took the time to clear the air with The Star this week. Corleon addresses rumors about everything from being mentally ill to falling out with Munga, you can check out the interview here. More About: Escape , Producer

Gnarls Barkley gets it “Going On” in Kingston
2008-05-16 01:48:00 Hit makers Gnarls Barkley , filmed the first video from their sophomore album, “Going On”, in Tivoli Gardens, Kingston earlier this month. The unlikely and self-proclaimed “Odd Couple”, producer Danger Mouse and rapper/singer Cee-Lo Green (of Goodie Mob fame) have taken the world by storm with their quirky and unorthodox brand of music and this video is no exception. Directed by film producer Wendy Morgan, and featuring Jamaican dance crews, Sashi Empire and Shady Squad, the video’s story line is as follows: “A group of friends celebrate their discovery of a portal to another dimension. Led by their fearless young leader, they travel to the sacred destination. What lies on the other side no one knows…”. Check it out below:
Foxy Brown collaborates with reggae heavy hitters on Brooklyn’s Don Diva
2008-05-16 01:42:00 Foxy’s back on the block and is dropping her latest release after an 8 month stint in prison. “Brooklyn’s Don Diva ” is choked full of guest performers, especially reggae artists, including hard hitters like Demarco, Movado, Morgan Heritage, Spragga Benz (her former boyfriend) and Lady Saw. Unfortunately, there are currently no videos for this album, which I’m pretty sure is a direct result of her incarceration, but Rolling Stone did give the album 4.5 stars. I have yet to listen to the album, but you can weigh in with your own rating after listening to the album here. More About: Reggae , Brown , Foxy Brown , Heavy

2008-05-11 15:45:00 I just want to tell all the mothers, Happy Mother’s Day! Here’s a little Garnet Silk for you, singing Mama! Have a great holiday!
Red Stripe/Mavado/Munga/Bounty Killer/Cedella Marley Booker and more
2008-04-29 17:46:00 I’m back from my birthday weekend and there’s a lot of things happening in the news, so click the links for the details: Grand Theft Auto IV hits stores today and 6 million people will be introduced to the Real McKoy aka Mavado in just the first week! The video game makers enlisted Mavado on it’s latest release, and his hit The Real McKoy is featured during the intro. You can check out the trailer here. Hate him or love him, that was an excellent marketing move… In other Mavado news, he as well as Bounty Killer have been banned from Guayana because they are viewed “security threats” Mavado was named by Rolling Stone as the best “new reggae” artist. I’ve been reading on other sites that he was donned the best reggae artist since Bob Marley , but I don’t see that anywhere on their site…guess that’s why it pays to read for yourself Munga involved in a car crash Jamaica shines at the Penn Relays There&rsquo...

From Harvey River by Lorna Goodison
2008-04-23 19:36:00 I ordered this novel a couple of weeks ago and I finally got it yesterday. It’s called From Harvey River by Lorna Goodison, it’s a memoir about Lorna’s mother and Jamaica. I absolutely love to read and I really love books and memoirs about Jamaica, so of course this was an automatic read for me. I just started reading it last night and I already don’t want to put it down. The story is set in Jamaica, and explores the life of Doris Harvey while living in Harvey River, Hanover and Kingston. You can read Chapter 1 here. ShareThis
Let The Real Miss Rap Supremes Stand Up!
More articles from this author:2008-04-22 04:14:00 I’m watchin’ Miss Rap Supreme and I just couldn’t help but seek some other form of lyrical satisfaction, this show is a mess…no it’s actually a HOT MESS. It’s everything that people think female rap is: disorganized, full of in-fighting, and corny, but still I tune-in (sigh)! So I thought I’d do a comparison, on the right you have the Gal Dem Sitt’n Medley pts I and II, featuring some of the hottest ladies in dancehall (and yes I know they aren’t rappers but they have lyrical skills better than alot of the female rappers). On the right you have the hot mess I mentioned earlier. You be the judge. ShareThis More About: Real , Stand Up , Stand , Stand-Up 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
