Roseanne: My Life As A Woman
2008-05-22 17:49:00 Before I get into this, I would just like to reaffirm how much I love Roseanne the TV show and am well aware the difference between what an actor is in real life and what they portray on the screen. Even with that taken into consideration, you'd hope that when an actor stars in a show inspired by their own life, that there wouldn't be such a difference between the character Roseanne and the person Roseanne. Well...there is.I knew going into this, it wouldn't be Shakespeare...but nothing could prepare me for this book. Loaded with misspellings (intentional and unintentional), grammatical errors, sentence fragments, and mind numbing rambling, I'm amazed I was able to finish the book at all.I'll admit I'm disappointed by the lack of discussion on her TV show, as this book covers the times before she made it big...but it was somewhat interesting to learn where she came from. Unfortunately, Roseanne spends a majority of the book pointing the finger at everyone else. It's always so... More About: Life , Book Review , My Life , Woman
Netflix Review In A Minute: My Life on the D-List Season 1
2008-05-22 16:40:00 I would just like to say how much I love Kathy Griffin now. I remember being annoying with her appearances on Seinfeld and her gig on Suddenly Susan...but now? Now I love her. The first season really attempts to set her life up for you; you meet her assistant, husband, parents, and her "main gays". First off, I love her assistant Jessica. While I'm not sold on her being a great assistant (given how late Kathy was to the Grammy's or Kathy not having her ticket to get into the Oscars), just her facial projection of not giving a rats ass about anything is enough to satisfy me.When Matt, her husband, is first introduced, he's rather large (close to 300 pounds) and you learn that he was thin before he and Kathy got together. I had a huge problem with him trying to sneak weights on his body, so that when he went to the doctor, he would weigh enough to qualify for gastric bypass surgery. They way he kept talking about how it'll just make everything easier really pissed me off. I think ... More About: Life , Review , My Life , Season , Season 1
Happy Hump Day!
2008-05-21 19:16:00 Wow. I am so out of it it's not even funny. The weather, upon my return from Chicago, has been incredibly crappy...dipping back into the high 40's...but fortunately it looks like we're almost out of the storm.I don't really have much to report. You read about my trip to Chicago. Work is going well...it's just incredibly busy right now and the stress is compounded by my not feeling well...so to say the least, at the end of the day, I'm worn the fuck out.Depending on my health this weekend, I imagine a rather low key one. I think I'm going to go back down to Brooklyn and walk around looking for realty places...but that depends on my health as well...So basically...shit is up in the air.I am getting excited for next weekend's Sex and the City movie release...but I've been hearing and reading mad stories about people buying up tickets and having Cosmo parties ...so I'm hoping the people in Astoria are a tad less enthused about the flick and I'll be able to snag a ticket. Netflix Review In A Minute: Scarface
2008-05-20 17:20:00 Well I finally watched Scarface . After a life time of rummaging through Scarface posters at Suncoast or having Scarface t-shirts shoved in my face walking down Canal Street...I decided to see what the fuss was about.Overall, I did like the film a lot. Not something I'd watch over and over again, it was definitely entertaining and held my attention all the way through. If you can get past Pacino's annoyingly fake Cuban accent, I think you could enjoy the film too. They definitely do not hold anything back. Language and gore abound in this film, starting with a rather bold attempt at a chainsaw torture scene. I secretly just wanted to see this film because I love Michelle Pfeiffer and she does a rather good job of playing a disco-era remnant now stuck in the 80's with her old Studio 54 nose candy habits. Her final scene in the restaurant where she rips Tony a new one, was brilliant. Unlike all of Tony's other subordinates, she was never afraid to stand up to him, which I loved.I fe... Water Cooler Moment: Gossip Girl
2008-05-20 16:58:00 Wow. What a pointless season finale. I did notice how they called it a season finale, when the fate of the network and it's show is steadily dying. And while they called it a season finale, they did wrap the loose ends that, if it were axed tomorrow, could be considered the series finale. Which brings me to my point: they set up the next season to be the world's most boring conception ever. Dan and Vanessa? Oooo. Nate and Serena? Been there. Blair being a bitch and Chuck being a man whore? Same old.The only redeeming moment of the show was when Blair and Dan worked together and got back at Georgina aka "Whore-gina". Now Georgina will be sent to a boot camp for naughty kids called...get this..."Penance". Oooo. Clever. Is Carrie Bradshaw a writer for this show? Blair has really sealed my love for her over the season as the Upper East Side's resident, self-appointed, "psycho bitch". If the show gets canceled, I demand Blair gets a spin off. Like every other episode, Serena maintains... More About: Water Cooler , Gossip , Girl , Water , Moment
Holy Cow
2008-05-19 22:35:00 Well I am back from Chicago...a little worse off then I left, but nonetheless back. Thursday I got up and ate breakfast before heading out to the airport, when someone started ringing my bell incessantly. I go down to open the door (since I don't think they realize that I don't have a working buzzer) and there stands some of NYPD's finest. They're looking for a man, whom they were told by some jackass that owns one of the shops under my apartment, lives in my apartment. What followed were repeatedly asking my last name, my roommate's name, and what apartment number I lived in, until I almost yelled at them that I've been there for over 2 years and no one by that name lives in my apartment. It was fucking annoying as hell. I'm pretty sure I know what it was in regards to -- there are some empty-being rennovated stores close to my apartment and the night before I had heard a large mob. It wasn't anything new since across the street is a bar and local jackass get drunk and get ... More About: Holy , Holy Cow
Weekly Kabbalah Tune Up
2008-05-19 02:18:00 Kabbalah teaches when a person dies, all the Light they've revealed through their actions is released into the universe.Thursday night ? Lag B'Omer ? marks the point in time when Rav Shimon Bar Yochai, author of the Zohar, left this physical plane. All the tremendous Light he channeled during his lifetime will be revealed on this one day.Think about what this means. The Light of Immortality that powers the miracle-making machine that is the Zohar, will be available for you to tap. There are three things you can do to make sure you connect to this awesome energy. First, prepare.yourself by appreciating what's coming. If your mind is not open to the spiritual significance of Lag B'Omer, then it's hard to reap the benefits. If you own the Zohar, I recommend reading the introduction written by my father and teacher, Rav Berg. Happy Hump Day!
2008-05-14 18:13:00 Hey gang. I hope you're all having a good day/week. Mine has been incredibly busy...but some of that is compounded by the fact that I am taking tomorrow and Friday off (holla) to go visit my friends in Chicago. I will be staying away from usual tourist hot spots in favor of actually getting to spend quality time with my friends. I will be taking plenty of pictures, so be prepared for some good pics from my trip when I get back.Other than that, there's not much to report. This was definitely a short post. Although I hope everyone remembered to celebrate my favorite holiday yesterday...Bea Arthur's birthday. To make up for my short post, I posted TWO videos of my darling Kristin Wiig. I love her! AAgh! I want to beat her over the head with a club and drag her back to my cave. OK. Everyone have a good week!xoDP More About: Happy , Hump
Netflix Review In A Minute: I Am Legend
2008-05-14 17:56:00 What was geared up to be a great movie blockbuster (in my own mind), started off great and slowly tapered to one shitty ending.I remember I was so excited to see this movie when the original trailers came out. The trailers focused more on Will being a lone survivor in New York City following some kind of post apocalyptic event...but there were hints he wasn't alone. Oooo. Excitement she wrote! Then the trailer showing us the villains of the movie premiered and somewhere you know George Lucas was touching himself in anticipation.Fucking CGI-fake-video game-reject creations from The Mask-looking pieces of crap. Part of my whole problem with the Star Wars prequels, was that it seemed like nothing in the movies were real...and it wasn't even done in a stylized form like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. It was just blatantly bad actors standing in front of a green screen. You were watching a cartoon. In Legend , the production quality seems so high and then you see one of the mons... I Hate Mondays
2008-05-12 21:41:00 Well I hope you all had a good weekend. Mine was...different. Friday night, I took myself home and vegged out. We're starting up some new shows, so it's been a busy week. I spent the night on the couch watching The Empire Strikes Back. I don't know why. Nerd. I know. I just had the urge. I also had a couple vodka-cokes to help to scenario. Towards the end I wasn't even watching so much as drunkenly rambling to my friend Michael on the phone. Good times.Saturday I got up and went into Park Slope. I thought I'd re-familiarize myself with the area and look for some real estate offices. Well apparently they're too classy to post apartments up in their windows (like every real estate office in Astoria) so there was no luck there...but it was nice to just walk around. Not a horrible day weather wise. Saturday night was an interesting one. My plans were canceled on me, so I went into the city to make the night up as I went. I started off with a drink at Posh, and followed it up with ... More About: Hate , Mondays
Water Cooler Moment: Brothers & Sisters
2008-05-12 21:20:00 Well the gay wedding finally happened. In a network TV first, Scotty and Kevin finally got hitched in a civil ceremony led by....republican sister, Kitty. Interesting choice. We all know she's cool with the lifestyle of the 'mo's, but it was kind of odd seeing a member of the "party of inclusion (if you're white and straight)" preside over a gay marriage.Rebecca finally got to fulfill her two year desire to get it on with her brother. Well...former brother. I haven't felt this awkward about sexual tension on a show since Step By Step when cousin Cody had a thing for Dana (aka The Danaburger). Well we all know they're going to date...and there's no real drama there, yet. Having just been kicked out of her home by her slutty mom, I have no doubt that her life with somewhat thrive under Nora's wing and aware from her mom's shadow.Which brings me to Holly. What. A. 2008-05-11 19:06:00 This was an incredibly fast read. Like many of Yehuda Berg's books, this was easy to digest and very inspirational. Berg's books are really accessible as your knowledge of Kabbalah doesn't have to be that great. He takes simple ideas and breaks them down in ways you wouldn't really think of.I may not be depressed right now, but the book has some helpful tools to prepare myself the next time I feel like I'm going down the wrong path. The book heavily focuses on being in the now. We're so bogged down by our past and worrying about our future, we fail to take the time to appreciate where we are in life. Letting the past remain in the past. I've already started applying some of the principals from this book to my everyday life, and I can already feel a difference. It's helping me to lighten up and to stop being so reactionary. Take the time to sew the seeds in your present, and you'll be much happier with your future.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Kabbalah... More About: Book Review , Book Club

How many people in your life are totally honest with you? Is there one person in your life with whom there are no blockages, no veils?Honesty truly is such a lonely word. "E=MC2" First Listen
2008-05-09 20:57:00 In an effort to play devil's advocate in my own head, I've decided to give Mariah's album a listen to. Even with all this Madonna vs. Mariah crap...I don't consider the two in the same league...well not league; game. Madonna is dance and pop. Mariah is R&B and soul...which is why I don't always listen to her. It's nothing against her...just not a huge fan of her genre. ANYway. Here we go.1. Migrate: It's got a nice beat to it. Maybe with a little tweaking, it could be a club song. I know this is just the first song, but it could be my favorite. Anything not gospel R&B I'm for. 2. Touch My Body: Mm. Not my favorite. When I heard this song it kind of dashed my hopes that E=MC2 would rival Emancipation. I like that she used 30 Rock's Kenneth in the video...but it still wasn't enough to make me like the song. I picture this song playing during some Angela Bassett movie love scene.3. Cruise Control: Ooo. We're getting reggae on your ass. It's like if Gwen Stefani in her No Do... Nerd Alert! "Wolverine and the X-Men"
2008-05-09 18:12:00 Much of my childhood (and let's face it; adulthood) has been spent in front of the TV. Every Saturday morning I would wake up, usually after having a sleepover with my best friend at the time, Carl, and I would watch FOX Kids Saturday morning cartoons. There were some good ones, but my favorite was always the X-Men cartoon show. Not too long ago, the WB attempted to resurrect an X-Men cartoon with 'X-Men: Evolution'. I don't even know if it survived to the second season, but suffice it to say, the show got canceled. Well Marvel is giving it another get-go, with "Wolverine and the X-Men". By the looks of the trailer below, it appears to be aimed at the new generation of X-Men fans, showing team rosters and story lines typically found in Astonishing X-Men and New X-Men. I couldn't be more pleased to see my favorite mutant Emma Frost as a staple in the show. I doubt I'll watch it (as Saturday morning have resorted to "Danny stays in bed 'til 2pm") but for other die hard fans, I... More About: Nerd , Alert

Netflix Review In A Minute: The Hills Have Eyes 2
2008-05-09 16:50:00 I gotta say I liked this film way better than it's predecessor. Watching it, I really enjoyed vibe of watching some Saturday night B-movie horror show. It kind of gave a little nod to all the films that Mystery Science Theater used to make fun of. The tacky B-movie quality definitely came through when the troops searching for victims in the desert were actually spliced with scenes of the actors in front of a poorly executed green screen of a desert. Most likely shot post production, it was very noticeable. There was also something very telling about a story with troops being trained night and day for a foreign war, and having spent so much time and effort concerned with other nations, they are completely unprepared for the monsters they created at home.I'm very concerned with Wes Craven's mental health, as this time, we were once again forced to watch a mutant on hot chick rape scene. The previous film, it was Emilie De Raven...now it's some army chick. I understand that it has s... More About: Eyes , Review , The Hills , Netflix , Hills
Water for Elephants
2008-05-08 06:08:00 Water For Elephants is a depression era tale of a young college drop out whom, following the death of his parents, finds himself running away and joining a circus as their vet (having nearly completely vet school at Cornell). I actually really enjoyed this book. It's my first Sara Gruen book, and I'd be interested to see what else she has written.I'm always a little weary of female authors writing male lead characters...and vice versa. Whether you think you can help it or not, your gender preferences seep into your work. Call it sexist, but that's how I view it. The book jumps from Jacob Jankowski's adventures in the circus to his life in an old age home at the ripe young age of ninety...or ninety three. He can't seem to recall. Jacob is a young fire pistol (with the red hair to match) and while I applaud his morals in defending his friends in the menagerie and Marlena, I can't help but feel like the author is writing in the wrong century to help romanticize her character. Netflix Review In A Minute: The Hills Have Eyes
2008-05-08 05:41:00 I don't know if I can say I loved it or I hated it. I remember when this movie came out, like a year before, the movie Wrong Turn came out. Now, Wrong Turn is a blatant rip off of the original Wes Craven 'Hills ' film, but it filled the gap for mutated cannibal families living in some secluded portion of the US. I had my fill, and by the time the remake of 'Hills' came out, I had had enough. But through the glory of Netflix , I thought "why the hell not?". Unlike Wrong Turn, this film though gory, is surprisingly tame compared to horror films out today. Having watched all of the Saw films, I really didn't find this film disgusting whatsoever. Maybe that's a plus for this film, or maybe I've just become too desensitized and have lost a shred of my humanity watching so many gore-fests. I have to admit most of the characters were pretty relatable, but like every horror film, there has to be a wimpy character that somehow stands up for himself and saves the day. Unfortunately, we... I'm uber excited about that. I haven't seen them since visiting Earlham for last year's graduation. Water Cooler Moment: Gossip Girl
2008-05-06 03:44:00 Well this was the episode we've all been waiting for: the dropping of "the gay bomb". I actually really liked tonight's episode and even the standard boring sub plots of the parental units couldn't bore me. We all knew Serena's brother was the gay one...it was kind of an anti-climactic bomb, but it was a nice twist that Jenny was un-wittingly playing Upper East Side Hag with a boy named "Asher". 'I'm glad the war between Blair and Jenny ended. Jenny had been snowballing towards being the most annoying, bratty, c*nt on television. I don't believe in hitting your kids, but if i had to listen to her whip out the world's tinniest violin and sing the world's saddest song with her harpy voice, I would've killed myself. This whole war had me siding with Blair and I've actually grown to like her character a lot. Netflix Review In A Minute: The Descent
2008-05-05 19:34:00 Apparently Lifetime Television For Women wanted to dabble in the realm of horror films. OK not really, but for a full hour I was waiting for Tori Spelling or Jane Seymour to crawl out of the cave and talk about women's disease and how men keep them down. The beginning cabin scene was way too lesbianic for my taste. After watching an HOUR of women grunting and crying in a cave, they finally bring out the cave monsters and things get interesting. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the scariness of the Morlock-like creatures ripping the girls apart. I had mixed up the monsters from the movie The Cave (released shortly after Descent ) and was worried the film would be too sci-fi with winged dragon-esque creatures. Fortunately I was wrong. There were multiple times I literally jumped in my seat.I was a little disappointed by how they attempted to portray Juno having an affair with Sarah's late husband. They didn't really do a good job at building that back story. All we got was... More About: Review , Netflix , Minute
Wealthy Families Flee New York For African Dreams!
2008-05-05 19:18:00 I don't know about my fellow apartment hunters, but I can't believe how many wealthy men want to rent me their apartments while they and their family move to Africa (presumably for work). Twice today I've heard the plights of two men, Mavrick Mitchel and Ben Grants, two self-professed "men of God" who just want reasonably clean people to move into their furnished and gorgeous apartments scatter throughout the NYC metro area. Unfortunately, like so many posts out their in Craigslist's world, Mavrick and Ben don't really exist. No, they're part of a scheme that lures people into sending rent checks to apartment owners they'll never get to meet in person. Often, the rent is requested before they send you keys to your brand new luxurious pad. Below is a copy of the emails I received from the two gentlemen as well as their friend Phillips Smart. 2008-05-05 19:14:00 The Ari teaches we decrease the Light flowing into our life when we hold onto grudges. Peek beneath the surface of your life and you'll likely find old ones that have not completely healed. It doesn't matter whether they're from far back or in the more recent past, these resentments are blocking your fulfillment, literally. This is the week to root them out.According to kabbalistic teaching, we are separated from God by a sequence of ten energy fields known as the sefirot (singular, sefirah). Together, arranged in right, left, and central columns, the ten make up what kabbalists call "the Tree of Life." As we increase our spiritual competency by ascending each sefirah, we simultaneously increase our spiritual capacity, giving us the ability to connect with and contain more and more Light. In other words, we are able to draw ever nearer to the Creator. The Ari reveals when we hold grudges, the sefirot shrink, thereby narrowing our gateway to the Light. We begin to experience a short... Netflix Review In A Minute: Schindler's List
2008-05-05 01:40:00 Wow. To say this movie is powerful would be an understatement. I came into the film not really knowing much about the plot. Well...to be honest, the only thing that stuck in my mind was the Seinfeld episode where Jerry makes out during the movie and his mom freaks out "you were making out during Schindler's List ?!?" So yeah...that was the extent of my knowledge.I thought Liam and Ralph were phenomenal, and Kingsley also shined in the somewhat smaller role of Schindler's jewish accountant. I'm not going to lie, I forgot Ralph was in the film, and for the first 10 minutes of his first scene, I thought he was Schindler. Am I wrong? Doesn't anybody else agree with me that Liam and Ralph could be brothers? Anyway...I loved the anti-hero approach to Schindler. Netflix Review In A Minute: Black Sheep
2008-05-01 16:44:00 I can't really say I enjoyed this film as much as I would've liked. When I originally saw previews for it in the theater, I actually thought it was a commercial that was going to cut to those Paper Bag People watching it in some Fandango.com movie theater. I was wrong, and the film is very real.Unfortunately it seems the production company had a "working backwards" attitude when it came to special effects and make up. While some of the "man to zombie sheep" transformations were well done, visually, you'd jump to another scene where you could almost see the victim holding a squeeze bladder filled with corn syrup and red dye. I also learned that there's another type of comedy in the world. We all know American comedies and British comedies, but I'd never considered New Zealand comedies. I sat there considering the film would be along the lines of "Shaun of the Dead"; a horror/comedy...and since I loved "Shaun", I was excited for "Black Sheep ". No such luck.
