MISTAKE 4: PERSONALITY TEST-BASED HIRING
2008-06-01 07:49:00 Solid statistical research reported from many objective sources has shown that there is very little correlation between any personality factor and any specific job. Competent and reputable "personality" type test producers (like the Myers Briggs) readily admit their tools are useful for self-awareness and training but are not suited for hiring candidates. Only "skills-based tests" or job knowledge tests have consistently been proven to predict success on the job. Well, that is an interesting aspect to say the least. I have to agree with the conclusion which was drawn by this article in terms of the real reason for personality based tests. Of course, when searching for someone who could do the job, a test for skills and IQ would be a must as opposed to knowing who that person is.As the article suggested, personality-based tests is useful when evaluating a person or profiling them and not really as a sole-basis for hiring them.Image source: Stockxpert More About: Hiring , Test , Personality
MISTAKE 3: SETTING A CRITERIA
2008-06-01 07:41:00 Criteria when doing a job ad is good but always remember that the criteria that you just set should be simple and straight to the point . If not, well that is also considered as one of the reasons why this hinders the recruitment process. Why? Well, because not everyone is fit for the "elaborativ" standards set by the company. How do you avoid this? Well, here is an interesting suggestion:Conclusion: Narrow down your criteria to the top 6-8 factors that distinguish winners from failures and ignore everything else that hasn't been validated, or you will be trapped into hiring "nice guys who finish last"!Well, are you in agreement or not? Image source: Stockxpert More About: Criteria
MISTAKE 2: POPULAR SUCCESSFUL MODELS
2008-06-01 07:38:00 Of course, looking up to successful and popular people as models would be a natural thing for someone who is also aspiring for the same thing. This is not what makes an effective hire. Don't believe me? Well, here is an interesting excerpt from my resource:For example, consider a major comprehensive study of top salespeople based on a sample of over 1000 sales superstars, across 70 companies. The top three characteristics these superstars had in common were 1) belief that salesmanship required good skills at answering objections, 2) the habit of being well groomed, and 3) wearing conservative clothes...especially black shoes. One thing that would helpful in this instance is to find out the "real" skills needed for the job and not just what would "look good" for the candidate. MISTAKE #1: EVALUATION THROUGH AN INTERVIEW
2008-06-01 06:48:00 An interview process when recruiting should be an added instrument in order to evaluate the quality of applicants being screened. However, just relying on that alone would not make it effective anymore. This is the conclusion drawn by this article as it mentions this as the number 1 common mistake that most recruiters commit. Aside from that, here are the three suggested reasons that experts concluded on this type of mistake:-Most managers don't structure an interview and determine the best answers (develop a scoring weight) before the interview.-Candidates do a lot more interviewing than most managers and are more skillful at presenting a strong appearance than the average manager is at probing past their "front."-An interview does help evaluate "personal chemistry" and allow the manager to get a feel of how well they might get along and work together. This is an important issue even if it doesn't predict the candidate's future potential to succeed... More About: Interview , Evaluation
HIRING MISTAKES
2008-06-01 04:54:00 Recruitment Processes should be mistake free or in practical situations, have a minimize risk when implementing the recruitment process. Despite that, there are still practices which could be considered as "mistakes" that are still constantly implemented. In the next blog entries that I would be discussing, I would be focusing on the different hiring mistakes that are common in the corporate setting. Of course, knowing these mistakes is very helpful for us recruiters because we would already know if that approach would be effective or not. There were 9 most common interview mistakes identified in this piece and I intend to discuss each and every details of these 9 items. So, sit back and evaluate if you are guilty with this kind of recruitment practice. More About: Hiring

ROVERPC P7 PDA PHONE
2008-06-01 01:57:00 RoverPC just upgraded their P6 PDA Phone and we now got the new P6 available. The biggest change is an improved processor, Marvell PXA270 416 MHz (up from 300 MHz) but still, there are other specs to be considered: 2.8 inch touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, miniUSB, microSD, and a 2-megapixel camera. RoverPC P7 is running on Windows Mobile 6.1 and the worst part is it only supports GPRS/EDGE data and no 3G. Unless it goes live soon for a really good price I don't think they're going to be successful.via MobileWhack
HOW IS THE SMART CARDS WORK?
2008-05-31 18:36:00 Smart cards are electronic devices with a striking similarity with credit cards, albeit with a wider range of applications and higher levels of security. Typical credit cards the basis of all plastics. Credit card information is stored on magnetic tape similar to that of magnetic tape that use in audio cassettes, which makes it a read / write relatively simple operations.Shortcoming of the typical credit card is that most of the information must be stored in mainframe computer, Internet networks, where it is verified and processed.Smart cards, however, be replaced by magnetic storage unit for the credit card with embedded microprocessor for storing information. Since credit cards are shown first in the United States and became popular in Europe lately, rich-based networks should be built to create a secure environment for the use of credit cards. Although, as the never-developed infrastructure in Europe. So, to compensate for this, smart cards are intended. A smart card does not ask ... More About: Work , Smart , Cards
WE WANT TALENT!
2008-05-31 18:18:00 As HR shifts away from just hiring people, clerical and filing jobs, there are different strategies which companies should adapt in order to keep themselves ahead of the game. Seth Godin's take on this issue made me stop and think about this topic for a while. Here is an interesting excerpt:Understanding that talent is hard to find and not obvious to manage. The VP of Talent would have to reorganize the department and do things differently all day long (small example: talent shouldn't have to fill out reams of forms and argue with the insurance company... talent is too busy for that... talent has people to help with that.)
SEVEN BILLIONAIRES IN OUTSOURCING
2008-05-31 01:14:00 Forbes has primed a list of seven outsourcing billionaires. These magnificent seven comes from two developing countries of the world, that is, Taiwan and India. Taiwan millionaires are into manufacturing, they are specialized in contract manufacturing with special emphasis in the production of electronics. However, Indian outsourcing leading lights provide services to the world. They are minting billions by exporting software and IT services. f you wonder, what made these people successful, Robert Kennedy, a professor at the University of Michigan Business School has an answer, "The economics behind offshoring are really compelling, and customers usually do it for three reasons--they want specialized firms, [they want] to cut costs, and [they want] access to talent or specialized skills." Lets take a look at the list Azim Premji: At age 21, Premji took over his family's cooking fat oil company. Since then, Wipro has become the No. 1 provi... More About: Outsourcing , Billionaires
PAPYROPHOBIC BUT LOVE STICKY NOTES? TRY POSTICA
2008-05-31 00:29:00 Postica has to be one of the more single-serving Web apps I've seen in a long time. The service lets you create a slew of tiny sticky notes that can be maneuvered around the confines of your browser with ajaxian flair. They don't hover over pages you're looking at like Diigo or Fleck; instead it's all about your personal note space. Whatever notes you create are saved, and can be accessed from wherever. You can also share them with others, and they can send notes to your workspace, too. Each note is confined to just 140 characters, the same length as an SMS text message or a note on Twitter. You can also add a single file to each note. I managed to get a few image files that were over 5MB in size, but it choked on the 50MB video file I tried. There's no documentation on what the size limit is, or if you'll run into any sort of cap on total storage so I'd stick to small files like PDFs, pictures, and office docs. I'm still wary to recommend Postica over something like Shifd... More About: Love , Notes
OUTSOURCING TO AMERICA!!
2008-05-31 00:13:00 Almost 1 million America ns get their paychecks from Mexican companies, says Ton Heijmen, senior adviser for outsourcing and offshoring for the Conference Board. Now that's a news to me. I thought jobs are vanishing from America and are landing up in offshore countries. But this report from Forbes has really changed my perception. Well, I know America is also a land where many brands from foreign countries set up shops and employed Americans and invested billions of dollars. I got this info about Toyota from Wikipedia. Toyota directly employed around 34,675 people in the United States, invested USD $15.5 billion, produced 1.2 million vehicles using US and foreign auto parts, sold 2.54 million vehicles, and donated USD $340 million to nonprofits. [20] It has in total 10 plants, USD $2.9 billion per year payroll, purchased USD $28 billion in parts and supplies from 30 states. It created around 386,000 jobs in the United States as result of Toyota's spending a... More About: Outsourcing
TOSHIBA SOURCING LCD TV PARTS FROM TAIWAN, WANTS TO PUT THING UNDER WRAP
2008-05-30 22:36:00 Toshiba has become the first Japanese maker to outsource production of its LCD panels, from Taiwan . The deal is on from last February, but the news has only broken out now. Fishy, no? Toshiba has formally (and finally) acknowledged the fact it is outsourcing LCD panels from Taiwan but has rejected to name the contractor. So, first it did not want to inform the whole world about the outsourcing thing, and now it is hiding the contractor's name as well. Hmm….may be to keep the whole world to keep faith in its products. The sourcing parts clad television sets will hit the US market first and gauging the response the management will roll out its global plan further. Toshiba also is planning a new portable video player during 2010. Don't have time to visit the blog often? Let me send you outsourcing news, views, career tips, analysis, joke, humor, even bitching of the outsourcing world as they are publsihed in BPOTiger. You may subscribe here. YAHOO GETS MORE SOCIAL WITH NEW MESSENGER 9 BETA
2008-05-30 21:56:00 Yahoo Messenger 9 offers a more elaborate friend list and can display videos and photos in the chat window.(Credit: Yahoo) You can't take it with you, at least when it comes to your social graph. But with a new beta version of Yahoo Messenger 9 software released Thursday, users have new options for reconstructing networks of friends and contacts they've built elsewhere. The new beta of Yahoo Messenger 9 can help user invite contacts on AOL, Google's Gmail and Orkut, Microsoft's Hotmail, MySpace, and other online services to connect through the Yahoo service. Version 9 also includes a special group of all people in your Yahoo address book, helping to connect with contacts users may have stored elsewhere within Yahoo itself. Also tying more deeply into the rest of Yahoo, the new beta can be used to reflect some other activities within the network--for example, when somebody spotlights a Web site of interest using Yahoo Buzz. "We'll add more types of updates in the futur... More About: Social , Yahoo , Beta , Yahoo!

PROS AND CONS OF OUTSOURCING, THE DEBATE ON POSITIVE VS NEGATIVE IS ON
2008-05-30 21:08:00 From giant to modest ones, organizations from across the world are under immense stress to deliver value to their customers and thus embrace the challenges dished out by competition. In global village market, this is truer today than it was ever. Broadly, the factor that directly or indirectly contributes toward an organization’s business success is the cost of production and operation. Among the many initiatives that have succeeded in reducing the cost of producing goods and services is the outsourcing/offshoring model. This model has taken many forms and its characteristics have been refined over a period of time. Positive effects of outsourcing are concentration or focus on core business areas, get best of trade services on non core areas from specialized firms, world class technology and service at cheaper rates with attaching no strings, increased productivity, greater share holder confidence, tax benefits, more savings means more resource in hand for business expansi... FIGURE OUT HOW TO ______ WITH WONDERHOWTO
2008-05-30 20:51:00 With video search being what it is (see Truveo, Blinx, etc.), we're possibly over the need for video how-to sites that simply compile from other sources. However, I wanted to write about video how-to site WonderHowTo because it's got a great collection of clips, and an even better way to sort through them--maybe more so than your standard video search tool. Each category goes about two levels deep, but that second level is where all the care has been taken. For example, if you dig into Arts & Crafts, there are 13 different subcategories, each of which has been meticulously sorted. You can divide up the results even more with tags and keywords. There are also alternate ways to explore videos related to what you're watching with a little sidebar of clips that sits to the left, and will continue to play down the list as each video finishes. WonderHowTo's categories go deep. From basic bartending to preparation for terrorist attacks. Unlike some how-to sites that create c... More About: Figure

2008-05-30 05:33:00 Today is Friday, so this post is on interpersonal competence. On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal ran a very interesting article on the front page – “Detroit Politician Gets lesson in Civility From a 13-Year-Old.” It began…“When Monica Conyers, president pro tem of Detroit’s City Council, called the council president ‘Shrek’ during an angry exchange at a hearing in April, one city resident found the remark immature. ‘That’s something a second-grader would do,’ says 13-year-old Keiara Bell. ‘You’re an adult. We have to look up to you. We’re looking on TV and we’re like this is an adult calling another adult a Shrek’?”In case you’re not up on your popular culture, Shrek is an animated movie character who is an ogre. RECRUITMENT METRICS
2008-05-30 03:41:00 Numbers actually plays a big part in the recruitment department especially when we are dealing with massive hiring and many vacant positions to be filled. Aside from the actual figures or numbers that you have to analyze in the recruitment period, certain standards and metrics should be met depending on the company goals during that time period.Despite that, I'll be giving you the five recruitment metrics that are usually used by recruiters:-Recruiting Cost ratio (this includes staffing costs and new employee salaries over the year)-Recruiting efficiency-New hire performance-Hiring manager satisfaction-Employee starts (difference between date of offer and actual start date) Are you aware of such metrics? FORGET GOOGLE DOCS, PENZU GIVES YOU PAPER 2.0
More articles from this author:2008-05-30 02:21:00 I'm not kidding when I say Penzu is the most realistic re-creation of paper I've seen on the Web. The service has a serious leg up on its pulp-born competition with a slick looking college-rule that holds all your thoughts (intelligent or not) and saves them to the cloud. When it comes time to print them, they'll come out just like they look like on the page, sans rulings of course. One thing Penzu does a little better than other Web-based note takers is structure your docs like a diary, and stack each entry as its own page. You can hop back and forth between them with relative ease, and Penzu is smart enough to put the most-recently created docs on top. Also integrated are images, which you can upload from your computer at up to 5MB a pop. They'll sit in the margin and out of the way of the text. A simple mouse-over will let you see them in full resolution. Up until a week ago I would have found this little service to have a nice leg up on Google Docs, which I usually use to...
