2008-05-30 01:43:00
Rumors are over boys and gals, because ASUS is really coming out with the new 10-inch Eee PC 1000 during Computex , in Taiwan. This time the news came from ASUS itself so you'd better believe it. Word is that it should be available from November (at least in UK, says Crave) but we can't tell for sure if it's going to be Atom-based or not.Would you buy one?

D6 WRAPUP: THE ACCESS PANEL
2008-05-30 01:18:00
Conference co-hosts Walt Mossberg (left) and Kara Swisher interview FCC Chairman Kevin Martin and Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam.(Credit: Ina Fried / CNET News.com) CARLSBAD, Calif.--The D6 conference wrapped up on Thursday with a session on broadband access: Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher interviewed Lowell McAdam, CEO of Verizon Wireless, and Kevin Martin, chairman of the FCC. Mossberg started by putting a chart up showing how far behind the U.S. is in broadband access, and how expensive our access is. Martin said you need to look at the unique demographics of the U.S., and if you compare some states, like Massachusetts, to Korea, then they'll hold up better. Of course, providing access to less-advantaged areas is still a challenge. So why do we pay four times as much per megabit, Mossberg asks? Again, Martin says, it's because of demographics: The average cost considers rural areas, which are more expensive to serve. On the issue of providing service to more communit...

EVENTS SERVICE MEETUP GETTING FACELIFT, DEVELOPER API NEXT MONTH
2008-05-30 00:54:00
Meetup, the popular events management service will be undergoing several large changes in the next few weeks. According to an entry posted to the company's official blog last night, users new and old were watched while using the site to help restructure the design and layout. Screenshots have been posted showing a new look, which is possibly a little less important than the announcement of a developer API that's launching alongside it. Developer s will be able to tap into a limited amount of the data found on the site for use in third party sites and tools. Personal information from members is not making the cut. Also new is an updated payment system that will be provided to social organizers who need better ways to manage events with a price tag. Meetup currently has PayPal, but the new tool will integrate Amazon Payments--a PayPal and Google Checkout competitor which launched late last year. What's smart is that the new system lets event planners set it up so that people who ...

FOUR GEFORCE 9800 GX2 CARDS, TO BUILD A SUPERCOMPUTER
2008-05-30 00:43:00
This may not be the best supercomputer we've ever seen, but it has some interesting points to look at. Researchers from the University of Antwerp used four of NVIDIA's high-end GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics cards to build a computer capable of developing new computational methods for tomography. Powered by a 1,500W power source it runs on an AMD Phenom 9850 processor, has 8GB of RAM, and a 750GB hard drive.Dubbed FASTRA, the new system is capable of doing computations that took 1 hour before, in just a few seconds. Here is an overview:Source

SANDISK EXTREME III MEMORY STICK PRO-HG DUO - 30MBPS
2008-05-29 23:58:00
SanDisk just released their new Extreme III PRO-HG Duo cards capable of speeding up to 30MBps (read and write transfer speeds). This is obviously not for newbies using their cameras on vacations. In June when it should be available, the price for the 4GB model should be $90 while the 8GB card should be $150. I suppose those professional photographers using them, wouldn't mind paying. Just for the record, the non-HG Extreme III cards go up to 18MBps speeds.SanDisk via Electronista

NOKIA N96 PREORDERS FOR $1,200
2008-05-29 22:21:00
Play.com is speculating that Nokia 's monsterphone, the N96, will be available from July 31st with a very expensive price : $1,200. They have it available for pre-order on the site, but I wouldn't rush in just now if we consider that Nokia estimated the price at $800. I'm definitely setting up an alarm on my cellphone to make sure I don't miss July 31st, to see what the truth is.via Gizmodo
WORKFORCE CHANGE
2008-05-29 21:50:00
They say that nothing is constant in this worl except change and guess what? That is true even in the recruitment field. As time passess by, there are a lot of things happening both unexpected and expected which eventualy shapes the genre of that certain period. Recruitment is no exception in this rule specially because we are dealing with people and the industry as well. As of the present situation in the workplace, Karen Beaman shares an interesting thought about it which she called as the "4 Major Aspects in the Evolving Modern Workforce". The 4 Major Aspects:Multi-Generational – we are are now seeing up to four generations of workers working simultaneously in the workplace — Veterans, Boomers, X’ers, and New Mils — each with differing world views, work/life needs, and job expectations of their employers.Multi-Cultural – we are experiencing increasing cultural differences as organizations continue to go global; pervasive globalization, conti...

LEARN TO TYPE ON YOUR DESKTOP, IPHONE WITH TYPINGWEB
2008-05-29 21:44:00
I do a lot of typing every week, probably more than most folks. But I'm certainly not the fastest in my field. To improve that there's TypingWeb, a Web-based typing tutor the likes of Mavis Beacon and other software-based typing helpers. It's been around since 2004 as a paid service, but has just opened its doors to everyone for free. The service offers a few ways to enhance your typing, including lessons in the home keys, correct finger placement, and handy shortcuts, and bundles them with exercises that apply what you've just learned. It's not nearly as slick as some of the more recent typing efforts I've seen, like Keybr or the addictively fun Type Racer, but the lesson plans for each difficulty level are really well thought out. You can simply pick and choose areas where you want to improve on and dig in. Test your regular keyboard skills, or your finger keyboarding skills on the iPhone, with TypingWeb.(Credit: CNET Networks) To go along with these tests, the service ...

WE’RE ALL GUINEA PIGS IN GOOGLE’S SEARCH EXPERIMENT
2008-05-29 21:40:00
SAN FRANCISCO--When it comes to search quality, Google has a split personality. Google uses a method called split A/B testing to measure exactly what changes it should make to its main search Web site--both to its famously Spartan search box and to the results it produces. With the approach, Google shows different versions of the pages to users and measures how they respond, said Marissa Mayer, vice president of search products and user experience, in a speech at the Google I/O conference here Thursday. Marissa Mayer, vice president of search products and user experience at Google, speaks at the Google I/O conference.(Credit: Stephen Shankland/CNET News.com) For example, Mayer said, the company wanted to find out how many search results to show users--the customary 10, or 20, 25, or 30? When asked directly, users said they'd like more results on a page, but testing showed otherwise. Specifically, Google found that when the results increased to 30 per page, people searched ...

SIX KEY LISTENING BEHAVIORS
2008-05-29 07:04:00
Today is Thursday, so this post is on dynamic communication. All dynamic communicators are excellent conversationalists.  All excellent conversationalists are great listeners.  The other day, I read a very interesting book, “Same Words, Different Language” by Barbara Annis.  Ms. Annis bills herself as “the world’s leading gender specialist.”  After reading “Same Words, Different Language,” I’m inclined to agree.  If you are interested in understanding gender differences and how to deal with them, I suggest you read it too.For purposes of this post, I want to concentrate on what Ms. Annis has to say about listening.  She says, “Active listening is what gives you those ‘Ah-hah’ moments.  How do you do that?  Follow these guidelines:Take ownership of the situation.  It’s the only way to avoid becoming the victim of your own blind spots.  Try to recognize your own bli...

GLAM MEDIA LAUNCHING REVENUE-SHARING VIDEO PLATFORM
2008-05-29 06:00:00
Glam CEO Samir Arora(Credit: Rafe Needleman/CNET Networks) CARLSBAD, Calif.--Glam Media is launching a new platform for content distribution, the GlamTV Platform. It will allow the video assets in its woman-focused network of sites to be shared to new destinations, and more importantly, everyone in the value chain of the distribution will collect a piece of the advertising revenue. Video s on the Brightcove platform will also work on GlamTV. "It's a rights-managed platform end to end," Glam Media CEO Samir Arora told me at the D6 conference here. An example he provided: Let's say the editor of SheFinds, an independent site, saw some video on a Glam site that she wanted for her site. On the TV Platform, she would grab the embed code for the video, but unlike with a YouTube video, once the media played, all the participants in the value chain would share in the advertising revenue--SheFinds, the Glam site that acquired the video, and potentially the contract video producer as...

GOOGLE GIVES GLIMPSE OF FUTURE GEARS GOODIES
2008-05-29 03:49:00
SAN FRANCISCO--Google showed off working prototypes Wednesday of new possibilities for its Gears project to goose Web browsers' abilities. When Google launched Gears a year ago, the company overemphasized one important feature, its ability to make Web applications work even when the browser is disconnected from the Internet, Chris Prince, a lead Gears engineer, said in a talk at the Google I/O conference here Wednesday. The new features, though, head in dramatically different directions: notifications on the desktop of various events, support for location information, better interactions with a computer's file system, and technology to let large file uploads proceed even when hampered by intermittent network connectivity. MAKING A GOOD PRESENTATION IN RECRUITMENT
2008-05-29 03:43:00
Recruitment does not solely focus on interviewing people and finding the right candidates for the position. Oftentimes, you could be dragged out of the interview room to present the things that you have done for a certain period of time.Presentation s are not an easy thing to do considering that you must compact the things that you've done in just one presentation. So what makes a good presentation? Here are some questions that you could ask yourself before making that presentation:-What is the one message you want your audience to take away?-If you were reporting your message on the evening news, what would be the headline? What 1-2 examples or facts would you use to back up the headline? (Remember, on the evening news, you only get 2 minutes to tell your story)-If your manager asked for a summary of your presentation that he could send to his boss, what would you say?-What actions do you want your audience to take after hearing your presentation?

YAHOO BROWSERPLUS AIMS FOR BETTER SURFING

A year ago it was Google with its Gears project. Now Yahoo wants to make your browser better, too. Yahoo BrowserPlus makes it possible to tag, crop, and perform other sophisticated operations for a Flickr photo-uploading Web site.(Credit: Yahoo) A year after the Google launched its Gears project, Yahoo announced software called BrowserPlus that has a similar philosophy: expand what's possible to make Web applications a better alternative to programs running natively on a personal computer. Right now, it's available only in a "sneak peek" on some Yahoo-operated Web sites. "BrowserPlus is a technology designed to 'extend the Web,' so that developers can build more exciting Web applications and so end users can get more done inside their Web browsers," Yahoo said on a BrowserPlus frequently-asked-questions page. Among its abilities: "Different Web sites can use BrowserPlus to support things like drag and drop from the desktop, easier file uploads, more efficient and secur...

GOSSIP: IS FACEBOOK CUTTING COSTS BY AXING PERKS?
2008-05-29 01:26:00
Facebook might be hiring former Google employees left and right, but if current rumors are true, don't expect them to start instituting a free-food policy like Mountain View's any time soon. Gossip blog Valleywag has reported for the past few days that Facebook is doing away with a $600 monthly housing subsidy offered to employees who opted to rent living space within proximity the company headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif. The latest rumor says that new hires are losing their housing subsidy, and that existing employees will only keep it until they move to new houses or re-sign their current leases. A source close to Facebook (who is not a current employee) confirmed that yes, the housing subsidy existed in the first place and wasn't some mythical, Skull & Bones-esque benefit, but was unable to confirm whether the perk was getting the ax. Facebook declined to comment. Valleywag has created a movie-worthy sort of narrative for Facebook: under the management of new chief ope...

NATHAN MYHRVOLD AT D6: DON’T CALL ME A PATENT TROLL
2008-05-29 01:21:00
Nathan Myhrvold was chief technology officer of Microsoft, but since 2000 has been building a portfolio of inventions (patents) at Intellectual Ventures. He's also a talented chef, photographer, and paleontologist. He was interviewed Wednesday at D6 by Walt Mossberg. Walt Mossberg interviews Nathan Myhrvold at the D6 conference.(Credit: Ina Fried / CNET) Mossberg dived into the controversy around Myhrvold's venture, which has been called an institutionalized "patent troll." Myhrvold says, "We invest in ideas, not the realization of it." He says, "We recruit inventors before they have an invention." "And then you own it?" Mossberg asks. "Yes, but we pay the inventor." The company, started in 2003, works on a process that takes four to five years before it has ideas that can be protected. "A lot of (the ideas) are 10 years out." The company files 500 patents a year, and has filed 1,700 in total. Only about 50 have been granted so far, he said, but as of yet none of the p...

OPEN SOURCE ON THE WIRE
2008-05-28 12:55:00
Once upon a time, using open source servers and applications business was frowned on in many circles. Today, you'd be hard pressed to find any significant infrastructure that does not leverage open-source code in some form or another, whether for a few databases MySQL, Apache Web server, or the pilot of Perl, PHP, Ruby, Python or requests to participate things together. But there is one place in the enterprise, modern infrastructure, where open source solutions have yet to make significant dentist, and this is very network that connects all these pieces. Of course servers and network equipment, such as routers and firewalls are fundamentally different animals. Servers are large, disk-laden, high-powered computers with Ethernet interface, running a full-penoplastmasa operating systems and applications, ranging from light to heavy web servers databases. Routers and firewalls are slim small appliances which do not have the drive, run high optimized and controlled operating systems, a...

TRUPHONE UPDATES NOKIA CLIENT, ADDS ANYWHERE SUPPORT
2008-05-28 10:21:00
As another bay step on their plan towards world domination, Truphone has announced availability of their new 4.0 client for Nokia S60 devices, which allows you to make calls over WiFi or 3G at much less expensive rates. The new twist on this is called Truphone Anywhere, which allows you to use Truphone to make calls even when you're not in WiFi or 3G range. How does this work? If you happen to be outside of WiFi or 3G range, but still have a GSM signal, you can ask that the call be routed over a PSTN gateway within your country. This gateway, which will be a national call within your country, will connect your call to the international destination at Truphone's "brilliant" rates. The next step? A GSM SIM frm Truphone. Believe me, it's coming, and if you do a fair amount of international traveling, you'll want it! To hear more about Truphone's plans for world domination, have a listen to Alec Saunders Squawkbox from 27 May. Crossposted from The VoIP Weblo...

WINDOWS 7 DEMO AT D6: REALLY? THAT’S IT?
2008-05-28 09:27:00
During the joint Gates/Ballmer opening interview at the D6 conference on Tuesday (all stories), the audience was treated to an early look at Windows 7, which, according to Ballmer, will ship to customers in late 2009. The demo showed a full-screen multitouch interface embedded in the operating system. We saw a demo of a Surface-like app for organizing photos, and what appeared to be the Windows 1.0 Paint app, except that you can now draw with all your fingers at once. Also, a digital globe app, where the two-handed interface makes good sense. And a piano app, on which, thanks to multitouch, you can now play chords. Aside from a glimpse at a touch-enabled Windows task bar, that was it. The interface. The coat of paint on top of the multitasking engine, the file system, the security, the device drivers...the foundation that the UI is built on top of. After the demo, I ran in to Bill Gates and asked him why he showed just the UI and didn't discuss the underpinnings. His explan...

AIRTEL PULLS OUT OF TAKEOVER TALKS WITH MTN, RELIANCE BEGINS THE CHASE
2008-05-28 08:07:00
3 cheers to the Bharti guys for holding onto their vision! Bharti Airtel , India's largest private telecom company pulled out of take-over talks with MTN after South Africa's MTN proposed to change the controlling relationship. Earlier Airtel wanted to buy a 51% stake in MTN but later MTN proposed a new structure where the Aritel would become a unit of MTN. This went against Bharti's vision:"of transforming itself from a home-grown Indian company to a true Indian multinational telecom giant, symbolising the pride of India, would have been severely compromised this was completely unacceptable to Bharti"Airtel-MTN combined would have been the 6th largest telecom group in the world. However, Airtel's competitor Reliance Communications is now in merger talks with MTN.Here is the official statement from Bharti Airtel:

OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS FOCUS ON IMPORTANT BUT NOT URGENT TASKS
2008-05-28 07:08:00
Today is Wednesday, so this post is on outstanding performance.Outstanding performers are well organized.  They manage their time, life, space and stress well.  In 7 habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey shared is famous importance and urgency matrix for time management.Urgent tasks are deadline based.  They are usually imposed by someone other than you.  The sooner the task needs to be completed, the more urgent it is.  Importance is independent of urgency.   Important tasks are those that you need to complete to achieve your goals.  Dr. Covey’s matrix is conceptually simple.  There are tasks that are:Not Important and Not UrgentNot Important and UrgentImportant and UrgentImportant and Not UrgentFor me, writing this blog is an important and urgent task.  I have committed to posting every day, Monday through Friday.  That makes is urgent.  Also, this blog is my primary marketing vehicle.  That makes it...
