Italian Mafia Starts Faking Olive Oil | Weird Facts
2008-04-24 15:39:00
weird factsItalian police have arrested 39 people and seized truckloads of fake olive oil destined for the United States, Germany and Switzerland to be sold at a big profit.Police said on Monday they seized 25,000 litres of the fake oil. The gang was adding flavouring and colourants to vegetable oil and slapping false labels on to bottles that claimed the contents were extra-virgin olive oil.Random tests on olive oil, as well as suspicions raised by some Italian restaurateurs and retailers, had led police to make the discovery. Police impounded contents of seven premises where the fake oil was being produced."We blocked the export of huge amounts of the oil to America, Germany and Switzerland, avoiding another international scandal after the buffalo mozzarella case," said Ernesto Di Gregorio, a Carabinieri police chief in the southern city of Naples.Several countries banned imports of Italian mozzarella when high levels of dioxin were found in the cheese – something blamed on the ...

weird factsScientists have been able to take control of flies' brains to make females behave just like males.Researchers genetically modified the insects so that a group of brain cells that control sexual behaviour could be "switched on" by a pulse of light. The team was able to get female fruit flies to produce a courtship song - behaviour usually only seen in males. The study, published in the journal Cell, suggests that the wiring in male and female flies' brains is similar.Scanning electron micrograph of the fruit fly (SPL)What would happen if we turned the neurons on in femalesGero MiesenboeckGero Miesenboeck, from Oxford University, UK, who carried out the research with J. Dylan Clyne from Yale University, US, said: "It is often the case that males have to work very hard to convince females to mate with them."In many animal species, males have to put on elaborate courtship displays to impress females - even the tiny fruit fly."Male fruit flies will vibrate one of their wings t...

Why Beautiful Women Marry Ugly Men | Weird Facts
2008-04-20 12:04:00
weird factsWomen seeking a lifelong mate might do well to choose the guy a notch below them in the looks category. New research reveals couples in which the wife is better looking than her husband are more positive and supportive than other match-ups.The reason, researchers suspect, is that men place great value on beauty, whereas women are more interested in having a supportive husband. Researchers admit that looks are subjective, but studies show there are some universal standards, including large eyes, "baby face" features, symmetric faces, so-called average faces, and specific waist-hip ratios in men versus women.Past research has shown that individuals with comparable stunning looks are attracted to each other and once they hook up they report greater relationship satisfaction. These studies, however, are mainly based on new couples, showing that absolute beauty is important in the earliest stages of couple-hood, said lead researcher James McNulty of the University of Tennessee...

2008-04-13 14:48:00
weird facts - When the U.S. Postal Service rang up a $13,500 tab at an Orlando steakhouse, it spared no expense during a five-hour meal that government investigators are calling "abusive" in its extravagance. The order -- charged to government credit cards -- included more than $3,000 for drinks, more than $500 for shrimp cocktails and almost $900 for mini crab cakes, according to the Government Accountability Office, the investigate arm of Congress. And then there's the steak. "The better question is probably what they didn't order," GAO investigator Gregory Kutz said Wednesday. He counted 81 entrees -- including just about every kind of steak -- from the 2006 feast at Ruth's Chris Steak House on Sand Lake Road. The GAO cited the Orlando meal as part of an overarching audit into abuse of government credit cards. The report, released this week, found 41 percent of purchases reviewed by the GAO from 2005 to 2006 failed "basic internal control standards."These include safety measures ...

Why Things Cost $19.95 | Weird Facts
2008-04-10 14:02:00
weird factsEver wondered why retailers price goods at $4.99 rather than $5.00? Here is the best scientific explanation I read:Why Things Cost $19.95, by Wray Herbert, SciAm Mind Matters: ...[M]ost of us are motivated by the desire for a fair deal, and we employ some sophisticated cognitive tools to weigh offers, fashion responses, and so forth—all the to-and-fro in getting to an agreement. But how does life’s dickering play out in the brain? And is it a trustworthy tool for getting what we want? Psychologists have been studying cognitive bartering for some time, and several basics are well established. For example, an opening “bid” of any sort is usually perceived as a mental anchor, a starting point for the psychological jockeying to follow. ... What makes us settle on a response?University of Florida marketing professors Chris Janiszewski and Dan Uy suspected that ... some characteristic of the opening bid itself might influence ... bidding behavior. In particular, they wa...

weird facts — They work long hours, often to exhaustion. Many are paid by the piece — not garments, but blog posts. This is the digital-era sweatshop. You may know it by a different name: home.A growing work force of home-office laborers and entrepreneurs, armed with computers and smartphones and wired to the hilt, are toiling under great physical and emotional stress created by the around-the-clock Internet economy that demands a constant stream of news and comment. Of course, the bloggers can work elsewhere, and they profess a love of the nonstop action and perhaps the chance to create a global media outlet without a major up-front investment. At the same time, some are starting to wonder if something has gone very wrong. In the last few months, two among their ranks have died suddenly. Two weeks ago in North Lauderdale, Fla., funeral services were held for Russell Shaw, a prolific blogger on technology subjects who died at 60 of a heart attack. In December, another tech blogge...

weird factsThat is the claim of psychologists who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or computer keypad or checking them for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10 points off the user’s IQ.This rate of decline in intelligence compares unfavourably with the four-point drop in IQ associated with smoking marijuana, according to British researchers, who have labelled the fleeting phenomenon of enhanced stupidity as “infomania”.Research on sleep deprivation suggests that the IQ drop caused by electronic obsession is also equivalent to a wakeful night.Infomania is mainly a problem for adult workers, especially men, the study commissioned by Hewlett Packard, the technology company, has concluded. The noticeable drop in IQ is attributed to the constant distraction of “always on” technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do. Infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of r...

"It doesn't feel like what would be in a book. You Google it and here it comes."Student Akshay Thusu said that when he took over the project a month ago he inherited a draft by earlier project participants, including a group of students who attended a conference five years ago put on by The Center for Academic Integ...

Lawsuit Settled Over Stolen Virtual Sex Toys In 'Second Life' | Weird Facts
2008-03-25 08:00:00
weird factsTAMPA, Fla. -- A legal dispute over the theft of virtual sex toys has resulted in a real-life slap on the wrist. A federal judge accepted the settlement Thursday of a lawsuit filed last year against a Texas man accused of stealing sex toys developed for the online world, "Second Life ."According to the settlement, Robert Leatherwood agreed not to copy, display or distribute any items sold by Eros LLC, a Tampa Bay-area company that creates virtual sex scripts in the "Second Life" universe. Leatherwood must also disclose the e-mail addresses of anyone he knows had access to his "Second Life" persona, known as "Volkov Catteneo."The settlement does not involve money or any admission of wrongdoing, court documents show. It effectively ends the suit filed last year by Eros' owner, Kevin Alderman, of Lutz. He sued to stop the unauthorized distribution of Eros creations, which allow "Second Life" users to equip their online personas, known as avatars, with realistic genitalia. Pr...

weird facts(AP) LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles man is getting his stolen Mustang back _ 38 years after it was stolen. The vehicle has an extra 300,000 miles and a different paint job, but Eugene Brakke’s 1965 Mustang is evidently running just fine.Brakke reported the car stolen to Burbank police in May 1970.One month later, a Long Beach teenager named Judy Smongesky received the car as a high school graduation gift from her father, who had bought it at a Bellflower used car dealer.Smongesky, who now lives in San Diego, said Thursday she had been driving and maintaining the car for nearly four decades, and only learned that it had been stolen when she recently prepared to sell it. San Diego police verified the car was hot."It’s his car, even though he had it for four years and I had it for 38," Smongesky said. "He seems like a real nice gentleman, though."Brakke found out Smongesky had twice rebuilt the engine and painted the Mustang from its old gold color to silver-blue."He wasn...

Norwegian Hospital to Equip Babies With Anti-Theft Alarms | Weird Facts
2008-03-18 13:37:00
weird factsOSLO (AFP) - A Norwegian hospital said Monday it was planning to equip all newborn babies with anti-theft alarms to protect them from kidnappings and help avoid identity mix-ups."The main reason is that we want to emphasise security," Erik Normann, head of the Akershus University Hospital near Oslo told AFP."There was a period in which Norway experienced several infant kidnappings and that is something we want to avoid," he said. The alarm system consists of two small chips, one attached to a bracelet clasped around the baby's ankle as soon as it is born and the other stuck on the mother's bracelet. When the two chips are separated by a certain distance the alarm is set off. If a woman tries to leave with a baby who is not her own, or if someone tries to rip the bracelet off an infant, the hospital doors automatically lock shut and the hospital elevators grind to a halt. The Akershus hospital, which has one of Norway's largest maternity wards with some 4,200 babies deliv...

weird factsLAS VEGAS, N.M. — Jessie Vigil's black-and-white car sports a red-and-blue emergency bar across the top and the word "police" painted on the doors. Vigil, however, isn't a cop. Law enforcement agencies say what he's done with his car isn't illegal as long as he doesn't act like a police officer. He started decorating his 2007 Ford Mustang last summer to look like the police cruiser in the "Transformers" movie because his 7-year-old son, Thomas, was fond of the film."My intent was to re-create the movie car," said Vigil, a 35-year-old disabled veteran from the war in Iraq. "When I came back from Iraq, I tried to spoil him. I wasn't the best dad before."He said he called the district attorney's office beforehand and spoke to Chief Deputy District Attorney Joe Ulibarri, who tried to discourage his decorating scheme but couldn't find anything in the law that would stop Vigil as long as he didn't impersonate an officer.Ulibarri said a state law prevents people from m...

WKLC-FM, better known as Rock 105, is giving away a free divorce.Valentine’s Day isn’t all hearts and flowers, says WKLC Program Director Jay Nunley. There is a darker side, he said, "where maybe you despise your spouse and resent the entire day."Through 4 p.m. on Thursday, Valentine’s Day, applications for the free divorce will be accepted on the classic rock station’s Web site, http://www.wklc.com. The winning name will be drawn at 5 p.m.Nunley cautions that this is a real divorce and people shouldn’t enter if they aren’t serious. Also, people expecting a long, drawn-out legal battle should hire a lawyer because the Rock 105 contest is for a relatively uncomplicated divorce.Charleston attorney Rusty Webb will handle the actual filing."Sure we can give away concert tickets, and we do," said Nunley.
