...And get away with it! But before anyone tries to sue me, this far-fetched plan is not my idea. It was dreamed up by a group of artists based in the Czech republic.

French Cops Say ?Who Called The Press??
2008-02-18 16:13:00
It was a near-perfect raid. Early this morning, before sunrise, roughly 1000 police officers descended upon the Parisian suburb Villiers-Le-Bel. Their target: a suspected group of ringleaders of the riots which struck the neighborhood last November and caused 48 hours of unrest. Less than 6 hours after the operation, controversy is rife about the presence of the press.

2008-01-05 20:46:00
The big media story of the end of 2007 looks set to keep on making headlines in 2008. It's been a while since I wrote about it, mainly because negotiations between the WGA and network bosses broke down weeks ago. A few developments are worth noting, so here's a roundup of the latest.

From Riches To Rags: Once Influential TV Interviewer Is Now A Hobo
2007-12-15 19:45:00
Imagine earning £85000 a year to interview the likes of Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair. That's precisely what Ed Mitchell used to do, before he became an alcoholic tramp who sleeps on a public bench. This morning I happened upon an endearing report about this man from Britain's The Guardian website. Mitchell's story was broken by a local reporter who happened upon the former TV journalist whilst volunteering in a homeless shelter. Here was a man more eloquent and slightly better dressed than the rest, though clearly in need of help. Eventually he opened up about why he was there.

Kidnap Victim Becomes TV Host
2007-12-06 16:58:00
She went into that house a young girl, and left as a young woman. I suppose spending 8 years locked up in a cellar is enough to give anyone a thirst for attention. Today, the TV trade publication Satellifax and various blogs (here's one!) have reported that the famous Austria n kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch is to host a chat show on Puls 4 in February.

Hostage Video: How To Obtain A Proof Of Life
2007-11-30 13:37:00
It’s the video everyone is talking about, and hardly anything happens in it. All it shows is a thin and feeble-looking woman sitting on a wooden chair, surrounded by greenery, almost motionless. And yet this sight alone is enough to bring hope to an entire nation. The woman on the video is Ingrid Betancourt, a Colombian ...

Music Fans Dump MTV For The Weather Channel
2007-11-28 15:15:00
Does anybody still remember what the initials MTV actually mean in 2007? "Moronic Teenage Viewing" perhaps? Or is it "Makes Teachers Vomit"? Perhaps the MTV acronym always stood for those things. But one thing the channel defnitely isn't these days is Music Television.

Culture Pub: Seeing The World Through The Prism Of Advertising
2007-11-23 17:22:00
Every once in a while comes along a show which despite all of its critical acclaim, popularity and admiration by media professionals turns out to be too clever for its own good. A French show called Culture Pub (translated: "Ad Culture") fit exactly into this category, which makes it all the more surprising that it managed to last on air a full 18 years before getting the axe.

Facing up to a few issues Roastfrog has been experiencing over the past few weeks, I decided to move the entire site to some spanking new Godaddy servers. 2007-11-15 22:53:00

The Fine Line Between Crap And Cool
2007-11-09 14:36:00
In most people's minds inventing a new TV show is pretty easy. Somewhere in the office tower of a network TV channel, an over-rich, overweight producer clenches a cigar between his lips, has an "Aha!" moment inspired by a poem which he read whilst sitting on the loo, barks his ideas to a nervous intern, and two weeks later an entire nation is eating dinner in front of The X Factor. The reality of things is much different.
