Four Things You Didn’t Know About American Idol
2008-05-26 13:17:00
Just in case you didn't know, American Idol , the biggest show on US television, closed its seventh season last week. Don't ask me who won, I didn't watch it. I did however come across an article about it in a newspaper someone kindly left behind on a train, so here are four facts about American Idol for the person who otherwise couldn't care less. There should really be five, but I couldn't find that many things that are interesting about it.

If Facebook Was Real Life [Video]
2008-05-06 15:15:00
Remember the times before Facebook ? When those old high-school friends remained unreachable, when all your embarrassing photos were relegated to a dusty album under your bed, and when you only had to lie about your love life to yourself? Ah, those innocent days seem so long ago.

Murdoch?s Lesson In Chinese Ass-Kissing
2008-05-05 17:51:00
Reviewed in the New York Times, a new book reveals lessons in media learned the hard way by one of the most successful men in the game: Mr. Rupert Murdoch himself. Back in 1993 the billionaire owner of News Corporation arrived in China , like many successful business men do, with dollar signs in his eyes. He had just bought a majority stake in Star TV, a fledgling satellite TV venture, with hopes of doing for Chinese TV what he had done in the UK thanks to Sky. But, to quote an overused cliché, the best laid plans often go awry.

Beyond LonelyGirl: Still Searching For A Web TV Smash
2008-04-28 18:18:00
Back in 2006 I wrote a short blog post about Cherub, a then popular internet-only TV series about a vampire with pink bunny slippers. Noting that there had to be more to streaming online entertainment than "YouTube cat-on-rollerskate videos", I mused that the first scripted web TV smash-hit couldn't be far off. Well, two years later -- an eternity by internet standards -- we're still waiting.

2008-04-27 19:19:00
This article may seem a little out of place on a blog which spends a good deal of time talking about the old boob tube, but here are 10 good reasons according to Mark Stibich, Ph.D. for turning it off from time to time.

The sound of a man being hanged to death will echo around Japan on May 6th. Nippon Cultural Broadcasting (NCB) has planned the radio broadcast of a death row prisoner's final moments as part of a special show about capital punishment. The recording was made in 1955, but the death penalty remains legal in Japan to this day.

Marilyn Monroe Sex Tape: Fact Or Fiction?
2008-04-16 22:41:00
"Yeah, Hollywood siren Marilyn Monroe made a sex tape. No, you'll never get to see it." These are not my words but those of a post in L.A. Now, a blog belonging to the the Los Angeles Times. The article is referring to recent rumours that have been doing the rounds online, according to which Monroe participated in a 16-minute-long home made porn flick when she was an unknown starlet.

Instead, they found themselves exploited for five weeks and imprisoned in a house against their will.

I'm not against milking a cash-cow for all it's worth, that's just one of the benefits of success. However, milking a cash cow and taking your customer for an idiot-- that's something else entirely. Paramount's latest venture reeks of this.

With the MIP TV audiovisual trade fair in Cannes almost over, it’s safe to say that one of the stars of the show this year was a political comedy programme called Headcases, boosted in part by a viral internet video of a dancing Nicolas Sarkozy . Paris Police Arrest Tibetan Man For Waving His Flag (video)
2008-04-07 19:49:00
It's all about image control-- as the Olympic torch came through Paris today, police were on strict orders to stop anyone interfering with the official coverage of the event. Interestingly, the apparently innocent practice of flag waving was high on their list of nuisances. Not just any type of flag though-- Chinese and Olympic flags were all over the place. However, as this video proves, waving a Tibetan flag was enough to get you arrested.

9-Year-Old Banned from Gameshow Because of His Name
2008-04-07 03:39:00
Last February a 9-year-old French kid believed his dream would come true. He had bagged an invite to become a contestant on his favorite gameshow, "In Ze Boîte", filmed before a live studio audience. The day of the shoot, the young boy and his mother turned up at the studio only to be informed that the producers of the show had become uncomfortable about his participation... because of his name.

Revealed: The Tobacco Industry?s Latest TV Advertising Smokescreen
2008-04-04 00:58:00
At face value it looks like a friendly TV ad, perhaps paid for by some local cancer victims concerned about the efficiency of tobacco regulation. The reality is much sterner: the people behind it are actually Reynolds Tobacco -- pushers of brands such as Camel, which as recently as last year was sued for overtly advertising to children.

2008-04-02 20:40:00
It may be difficult to fathom when pondering the idiocy of that Skating-With-Celebrities-On-Rehab re-run you just watched, but what if TV was actually making your life better? Believe it or not, that's what is being insinuated in a recent international Gallup study.
