tMF Top Five - Best Las Vegas Movies
2008-03-29 00:00:00 ...is the perfect cautionary tale needed for anyone who thinks they can take the house. - - - - - - Las Vegas . There really is no other place like it. Having been there many times, people often ask me about the appeal to Vegas and I say the same thing – it is something you really have to experience for yourself. Assuming you can stay relatively responsible it is some of the most fun one can have over a weekend. It’s a place where the only rule is that there aren’t any – or at least not in the ‘real world’ sense. A place where your vices may be legal and activities otherwise frowned upon are tolerated with a blind eye. The unrestricted availability of just about anything you’d ever dream of earned Las Vegas the name Sin City, and made it the perfect setting for many movies and TV shows. To mark the release of the movie 21, as well as my upcoming trip next week, I present tMF Top Five – Best Las Vegas Movies By Jeremy Welsch

2008-03-29 00:00:00 Starring: Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, Laurence Fishburne Director: Robert Luketic Release Date: March 28, 2008 Running Time: 123 min MPAA Rating: PG-13 Distributor: Columbia Pictures - - - Review by Jeremy Welsch - - - It is movies like this that test the film critic in me. I have two sides battling for supreme domination. On one hand there is my generally critical nature of movies themselves as films, and on the other, there is my love for the subject matter. They are two sides that I knew walking in to the theatre would go at it like a Seinfeld black and white cookie. The movie 21 tells a story I am familiar with. It is the Hollywood version of the book Bringing Down the House by Ben Mezrich, the story of six MIT students who perfected a card counting system and took Las Vegas casinos for millions of dollars in the early 1990’s playing blackjack. I use the term ‘playing’ so loosely because these kids didn’t get involved in the game to ga...
JIM STURGESS: On 21, The Other Boleyn Girl and becoming an actor
2008-03-28 00:00:00 Definitely one of the most exciting and talented actors we have today is British-born Jim Sturgess. The 26-year old actor has been hogging the news with such movies as The Other Boleyn Girl and the upcoming 21 (http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/21/). - - - - - - Of course, you'll remember Jim very well if you've watched last year's Across the Universe (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0445922/). If not, this film may be a good introduction to this amazing actor. There's an awesome Jim Sturgess article (http://abcnews.go.com/abcnewsnow/story?i d=4523784 page=1) by Melanie Pimentel that has just recently been launched at ABC News Now. MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL: Sets the record straight on trashing Katie Holmes and mo
2008-03-28 00:00:00 I think she's a wonderful actress and I really admired the work that she did in the first Batman, but I don't think it would have worked if I tried to imitate her. I think the only way to do it is to do it like myself, says Maggie Gyllenhaal . - - - - - - Maggie recently did an interview with Superherohype.com (http://www.superherohype.com/news/topnew s.php?id=6962) and she talked about her role in The Dark Knight. Her opinion about fellow actress Katie Holmes was one of the first questions asked of her. While I don't think she's quite aware of the way some bloggers misquoted her as she spoke about her role as Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight, still it remains an issue for me that of all the movie sites out there it's cinematical who tried to create controversy out of an innocent remark she made a few months back. Here's the post by cinematical blogger Patrick Walsh: While recently discussing her role in next year's Bat-sequel The Dark Knight, Maggie Gyllenhaal dunked Katie... More About: Sets , Record
LOVE SONGS: A Surprisingly refreshing modern-day musical
2008-03-28 00:00:00 From one of France's most original and stylish filmmakers, Christophe Honoré comes Love Songs (http://www.ifcfilms.com/viewFilm.htm?fil mId=556). A modern-day musical told through unforgettable songs sung entirely by the cast and scored by Alex Beaupain, the film has overjoyed audiences at the Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals. - - - - - - More about the Movie: In the hope of sparking their stalled relationship, Ismael (Louis Garrel of Dans Paris and The Dreamers) and Julie (Ludivine Sagnier of Swimming Pool) enter a playful yet emotionally laced threesome with Alice (Clotilde Hesme of Regular Lovers.) When tragedy strikes, these young Parisians are forced to deal with the fragility of life and love. For Ismael, this means negotiating through the advances of Julie's sister (Chara Mastroianni of Persepolis) and a young college student (Gregoire Leprince-Ringuet of Strayed); one of which may offer him redemption. Drillbit Taylor
2008-03-28 00:00:00 Starring: Owen Wilson, Troy Gentile, Nate Hartley, Alex Frost Director: Steven Brill Release Date: March 21, 2008 Running Time: 102 min MPAA Rating: PG-13 Distributor: Paramount Pictures - - - Review by Jeremy Welsch - - - This movie is a classic example of two ideas playing against the middle. The story was based on an original idea from John Hughes. Hmmm… The synopsis? Three freshmen get singled out the first day of high school by a bully. They place an internet ad and end up hiring a bodyguard, Drillbit Taylor , to protect them. Meh. The movie is rated PG-13 (ugh)… … for crude sexual references throughout, strong bullying, language, drug references, and partial nudity. Based on that description, if I was a teenager watching HBO late at night and that flashed up on the screen, I would have thought I had died and gone to ‘Movies I Shouldn’t Be Watching’ heaven.
James McAvoy
2008-03-28 00:00:00 Stepping Into The Spotlight tMF profiles one of the best actors we have today: James McAvoy! By Deana Martin James McAvoy rocketed to stardom this year with his much talked-about performance in Atonement (http://www.filminfocus.com/atonement), one of the 2007 Academy Award Best Picture nominees. While he didn't win a Best Actor nomination, he certainly made a big impression on movie-goers. - - - - - - James' turn as Robbie Turner in the British war/romance epic was heartbreaking and allowed McAvoy to show us the depths of his talent. The role demanded McAvoy to portray a near-perfect man, whose lack of flaws made the film all the more tragic. He proved with this performance that he may well be one of the best actors of his generation and has many new fans eagerly awaiting his next role.

(March 28th, to be exact) It’s about a squad of American soldiers coming home from Iraq. Working on this job, I got to know a bunch of real soldiers (as opposed to the pretend ones like me and my colleagues) who had really been through it. The friendships we formed allowed me to think of the current situation over there in ways I’d never even considered before. In the past, my thoughts concerning Iraq revolved around governmen... HANEKE'S FUNNY GAMES: Nothing is funny at all!
2008-03-18 00:00:00 When Lars Von Triel (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001885/) made movies about America, it was well-known that the Danish film director made his films without even touching US soil. It was said his “USA - Land of Opportunities” trilogy was Von Triel's reaction to some Americans who criticized his earlier work, and by these films he is sending out ‘a series of sermons on America’s sins and hypocrisy’ - - - - - - Another filmmaker, who has a reputation for his disturbing, often shocking style, Austrian director Michael Haneke (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0359734/), wanted to prove he can conquer American audiences- shock them even. In fact, he wants to teach them a lesson. Just as von Triel created films that depicted the so-called 'fictional America', Haneke wanted American moviegoers to watch his latest film, a remake actually, called Funny Games . (http://wip.warnerbros.com/funnygames/) There is nothing neither funny nor amusing about ‘Funny Game...

2008-03-18 00:00:00 Starring: Gabe Nevins, Taylor Momsen, Scott Patrick Green Director: Gus Van Sant Release Date: March 7, 2008 Running time: 85min MPAA Rating: R Distributors: IFC Films - - - Review by David DiMichele - - - Nobody likes to be unattended when entering Paranoid Park , a skateboarder's heaven built underneath a Portland city bridge, because the kids that go here are rebels, loners and misfits. Most kids fear they may not be ready for such a park that demands the highest of talent. Not only is our character Alex aware that he's unready, he still trots over with his skateboard in hand out of curiosity. Eventually he'll find out why he's not ready for Paranoid Park because the events that come after shakes his already discombobulated life. Legendary director Gus Van Sant uses Blake Nelson's book as a guide for this film. In the director's latest look at the trouble youth of one's life, he carries out a similar idea like Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment (in which I'm...
'Stop-Loss' Faces Uphill Battle
2008-03-18 00:00:00 Last year almost all films that deal with the conflict in Iraq failed at the box office. The most probable reason is that Americans have been bombarded with news about the war almost daily, leaving them almost 'immune' to more horrors and violence. This month, there's another war movie about to be shown, and at this early stage, things are not looking up. With such talents on board- from director Kimberly Peirce to its stars- Ryan Philippe, Joseph Godron-Levitt, Channing Tatum and Abbie Cornish, it would be a pity if moviegoers will not become interested in this important movie. - - - - - - More from The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/cont ent_display/film/news/e3i2db2b6662428870c 209b443dc184d9c7?pn=1): Ads downplay Iraq theme as audiences seem skittish [ By Steven Zeitchik ] With its morally complex story of soldiers who have served in Iraq, Paramount's upcoming Stop -Loss offers a more direct and gritty account of a current soldier's experience than... 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
2008-03-18 00:00:00 Starring: Adi Carauleanu, Luminiţa Gheorghiu, Vlad Ivanov Director: Cristian Mungiu Release Date: January 25, 2008 Running time: 113 min MPAA Rating: Not Rated Distributors: IFC Films - - - Review by David DiMichele - - - 4 Months , 3 Weeks and 2 Days goes by in what seems like seconds. Cristian Mungiu, director, manages to film the movie in real time, capturing one day with such raw power that he has his audience on a string the entire time. This means we have to wait it out feverishly for crucial revelations in the plot, and when they do come, they hit hard. Another tactic he has mastered is the art of physical direction, which can be quite simple if used in the right way. Many times during the movie he simply lays the camera down and lets it focus on someone's expression almost passionately. Voyeuristically, in fact. Most of the shots have been done without any cuts at all. They just flow steadily where another movie might soup the scene up with fancy effects and camera ...
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers
2008-03-17 00:00:00 Cinema’s Charismatic Rebel tMF profiles the ambitious, fearless and award-winning Irish actor Jonathan Rhys -Meyers . By Jed Medina If there's a good script and a good part, you can be guaranteed that all the best actors in the world are trying to get it. There's no such thing as once you get to a certain stage, everything becomes easy. Everything becomes harder; you want the best roles, the biggest roles. And so does everyone else, observes Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. - - - - - - The 30-year old Irish actor is known for speaking his mind- he is quite vocal about a number of issues- from the failings of the film industry to dealing with directors with huge egos to the irrelevance of celebrities the lack of real talent in some of today’s biggest box-office stars. Rhys-Meyers also suffers from the media’s perception and its apparent fascination with his looks, relegating his strong performances on the background. I have watched him for years now, enjoying a lo...

LES TEMOINS: Andre Techine revisits AIDS
2008-03-17 00:00:00 I find it strange, this constant preoccupation with linking a filmmaker to a character. Finding a connection between somebody’s private life and fiction is a vision of the process that is tainted by the current obsession with celebrities, says Andre Techine. - - - - - - The renowned French filmmaker was answering questions regarding his latest film, Les Temoins (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0487273/) (The Witness). What's the Movie About: Paris, summer 1984. Manu arrives in Paris, where he shares a cheap hotel room with his sister Julie. Casey Affleck
2008-03-17 00:00:00 Breakthrough Actor tMF profiles one of the most talented and versatile young actors in Hollywood today. By Jed Medina It would seem hard to talk about Casey Affleck without mentioning his brother Ben or vice versa. The brothers have been the subject of many articles - from their looks and their relationships to Ben’s decision to cast his brother in Gone Baby Gone (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452623/) and the completely different career paths both guys took on: Casey remained oblivious to the glamour and glitz of Hollywood, while Ben adjusted to the glare of being in the spotlight. - - - - - - While Ben tried his hand at directing, Casey began to develop his acting career and is establishing himself as one of today’s most gifted leading men. The Bank Job
2008-03-12 00:00:00 Starring: Jason Statham, Saffron Burrows, Stephen Campbell Moore Director: Roger Donaldson Release Date: March 7, 2008 Running time: 110min MPAA Rating: R Distributors: Lions Gate - - - Review by David DiMichele - - - The Bank Job has a by-the-book title, but people will be surprised by how smart, inventive and gritty this film actually is. Just look at the poster. There aren’t any overwhelmingly long gun battles between the cops and robbers but rather a basket full of events overflowing the brim of this particular bank job. At the helm is veteran director, Roger Donaldson (Cocktails and The Recruit), and he knows thrills are at their best without any over-the-top action scenes. Amidst all the hoopla of recent heist films, most notably the Ocean franchise, there is something true about The Bank Job . It doesn’t veer off into a fantasy world like Ocean's 13 did. The bank robbery that occurs is so down-to-earth that we can imagine it happening at our local bank. (The fi...

TOM STURRIDGE: In Upcoming Film 'The Boat That Rocked'
2008-03-07 00:00:00 When we're into modelwatching (http://model-max.com), we got a pretty good idea of how castings are done. In movies, apparently, there are some similarities but the degree by which people take it seriously is magnified 100 times. Big productions invest million of dollars, and they certainly want a nice return on their investments! They want 'bankable stars', but sometimes the choice of actors may backfire... - - - - - - Speaking of casting, there's news that tMF favorite Tom Sturridge (http://themovie-fanatic.com/hotlist/risi ng_stars/tom_sturridge/) has another role, aside from Maestro (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0955380/). tMF POLL: Robert Pattinson fans obliterate competition!
2008-03-06 00:00:00 Taking in almost 50% of the votes, this is the 3rd time in tMF poll history that such a show of massive support was bestowed to an actor. The first two actors who similarly got such impressive support were Cillian Murphy (http://themovie-fanatic.com/spotlights/s tars/cillian_murphy/) and Daniel Brühl (http://themovie-fanatic.com/spotlights/s tars/daniel_brühl/) in previous polls. The actor this time is no other than Robert Pattinson! Diary of the Dead
2008-03-06 00:00:00 Starring: Shawn Roberts, Joshua Close, Michelle Morgan Director: George A. Romero Release Date: February 15, 2008 Running time: 95 min MPAA Rating: R Distributors: The Weinstein Company - - - Review by David DiMichele - - - Here’s a zombie movie that not only kicks ass in the zombie genre (it's among the best I’ve seen), but also in the world that we’ve all come to be a part of - the mass media world. Legendary filmmaker George A. Romero created Diary of the Dead as if it were one of his old gritty independent films from back in 1968, but added a modern day touch to it by the way technology is used. This new touch he brings to his film penetrates deep into the human body and mind. Last time I checked, a zombie movie should only scare you. Here Romero scares and knocks us off our feet, leaving us pondering hard about what we just witnessed. You leave the theatre feeling stunned. More About: Diary of the Dead

The concept itself is intriguing. Any time there is a story newsworthy enough to be plastered all over every channel in the known world, we get the same details dredged out in front of us until a new perspective is offered. So to concentrate all those perspectives into a 90 minute movie is nothing if not efficient. More About: Point , Vantage Point
AWAY FROM HER wins Best Film & Director @ Canadian Genie Awards
2008-03-06 00:00:00 I heard a lot of buzz and praise for Sarah Polley's Away from Her (http://www.caprifilms.com/awayfromher/) since last year. Being a big fan of Julie Christie, it took me just a few days to find 'ways' to watch it. For me, it's a very personal and intimate film and one that you need to watch a few times in order to fully absorb it. It's that kind of movie that allows itself to grow on you. You feel like you know the characters by heart. It brought back memories of my Dad who recently died. I remember how he used to forget things and such...and that it annoyed me. Now he's gone and I should have been more attentive, but I have no idea about Alzheimer's..now I know. Someone said to me that films are supposed to move you, I finally believed her. - - - - - - Anyway, back to the movie and the news that it won big at the recent Canadian awards, the Genie . 2008-02-21 00:00:00 Michael Angarano: Making His Own Luck tMF profiles the talented charming young actor, New Yorker Michael Angarano By Jed Medina Not many people are blessed with the opportunity to enter a deeply rewarding and exciting career. In the case of Michael Angarano (http://michaelangarano.net), it has been like that since he was 5 years old. As a young model, he was exposed early to the hustle and bustle of a glam job. 2008-02-20 00:00:00 Ever since the first time I saw Natalie Portman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000204/) in Leon (The Professional), I've been a big fan. KRISTEN STEWART: On Twilight, Into the Wild and Yellow Handkerchief
2008-02-19 00:00:00 First on our list of upcoming profiles for young actresses is Kristen Stewart (http://www.kris-stewart.org/). I first heard of her and thought this girl is fabulous when I watched Undertow. That's another David Gordon Green movie with the awesome Jamie Bell (http://themovie-fanatic.com/hotlist/risi ng_stars/jamie_bell/) in the lead role. While her role is a bit short, she made quite an impression as Jamie Bell's girl, whose parents disapprove of the young man. RYAN DONOWHO: Little Drummer Boy and/or the Real Indie Kid
2008-02-19 00:00:00 I hope to stay fairly under the radar. I just want to do work that I can be proud of and make people feel something profound. says Ryan Donowho. - - - - - - You maybe familiar with the young actor having seen him in a number of The O.C. episodes. Other actors may have second thoughts playing such a doomed character but not Ryan. With such good looks, you may wonder, it's fairly easy for the guy to star in the familiar boy-next door types. But it seems he likes something different. Ryan was also in filmthreat (http://www.filmthreat.com/index.php?sect ion=reviews Id=9739) on the actor for his role in The Pacific and Eddy. That review and Mr. Donowho's reputation as an actor who loves doing indie movies made me realize this is one amazing talent worth watching! This story is less about her and more about the fact that while I was talking with her, there was a sticker on her bag that said CLASS OF 2008 IS GOING TO SAVE THE WORLD. I guess what it got me thinking about is how different our attitude is from the boomers and the xers. We've grown up being told that the world is in trouble. That it needs saving. And that we're the generation people are looking to to save it. I can't be sure, but I feel like our attitude is so much more optimistic when it comes to what we think we can achieve, and we actually feel like making a positive impact on the world before we leave it is important.
