27 Dresses
2007-12-31 14:52:00
Starring: Katherine Heigl, James Marsden, Malin Akerman Director: Anne Fletcher Release Date: January 11, 2007 Running time: 107 min MPAA Rating: PG-13 Distributors: 20th Century Fox - - - Review by Jeremy Welsch - - - Romantic comedies tend to exist in their own little world, don’t they? A world where they make up their own rules without any grasp, or even real connection to the rest of the planet. A world where everything gets a tidy treatment and at the end of the day everyone’s problems are solved in the span of about 100 minutes. They are the sitcoms of the movie world that rarely make apologies to that point. Having just sat through P.S. I Love You not 24 hours prior to watching this, I thought about the genre as a whole and did a little exercise. During the previews, I sat down and made a quick list of any plot devices I could think of that are overused in romantic comedies, just to see how many they would try in 27 Dresses . Again, this list was based stri...
P.S. I Love You
2007-12-31 07:43:00
Starring: Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler Director: Richard LaGravenese Release Date: December 21, 2007 Running time: 126 min MPAA Rating: PG-13 Distributors: Warner Bros. - - - Review by Jeremy Welsch - - - “Chick Flicks”. It’s kind of a derogatory term if you think about it. I don’t know too many women who like to be referred to as ‘chicks’, and to go so far as to pigeon-hole a whole category of movies as a blanket statement seems equally shallow. Nevertheless, the term is an accepted one and is synonymous with sappy drivel that taken men the world over find themselves being repeatedly dragged to in the hopes of building up enough points to talk their better half into seeing the latest Die Hard movie.

Yes we know, Cate Blanchett reigns! But Keira Knightley is so way way up there, we can't help but fall in love with her! The buzz on Atonement and Ms. Knightley's haunting performance is still piping hot, but it seems Paramount Vantage wants to capitalize on the Keira-craze, so they tease us with a trailer of The Duchess (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0864761/). ATONEMENT: One of the year's best!
2007-12-27 00:19:00
Joe Wright's Atonement premiered at the Venice Film festival to much acclaim, but failed to win any major awards. It went on to become one of the year's most nominated films, notably at the Golden Globes. I think of Atonement as one of the best films of the year. It's a rare cinematic feat- a visual feast that satisfies on many levels- it's ambitious filmmaking from a talented director, has a terrific story, with stunning visuals, and features amazing performances- especially from James McAvoy and Keira Knightley. And I'm not the only one who thinks highly of this film. Says Variety (http://www.variety.com/review/VE11179345 23.html?categoryid=31 cs=1): Rarely has a book sprung so vividly to life, but also worked so enthrallingly in pure movie terms, as with “Atonement,” Brit helmer Joe Wright’s smart, dazzlingly upholstered adaptation of Ian McEwan’s celebrated 2001 novel. Period yarn, largely set in 1930s and ‘40s England, about an adolescent o...
Charlie Wilson's War
2007-12-26 10:54:00
Starring: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman Director: Mike Nichols Release Date: December 21, 2007 Running time: 100 min MPAA Rating: R Distributors: Universal Pictures - - - Review by David DiMichele - - - If I hadn’t had a phone call this morning telling me about you, I’d have no clue who you are. We know, or we’re so told, that Reagan ended the Cold War and was responsible for the Berlin Wall collapsing, but, come one, is that all true? Why isn’t Texas congressman Charlie Wilson a household name by now? Boggles my mind that most Americans knew who got voted off American Idol but don’t know who Charlie Wilson is or what he accomplished. Could it be the fact that he was a so-called “pig”? This man isn’t praised because he always had a drink in his hand, around drugs, or galvanized women but what transpired years after the war was over (our current Iraq situation). That’s the reason why most of our popu...

2007-12-26 04:36:00
- - - The dynamic duo of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp is simply...awesome! In their latest project, they succeeded in bringing to the screen the magic and the horror of The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. One film reviewer (http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/12/18/s weeney-todd-a-masterpiece-wrapped-in-deat h-and-covered-in-blood/) even went to the extreme and declared: Perhaps the greatest director and actor duo in film history, Burton and Depp again show us what can be achieved on the big screen. Even Time has this to say: Burton and Depp infuse the brilliant cold steel of Stephen Sondheim's score with a burning passion. Helena Bonham Carter and a superb supporting cast bring focused fury to this musical nightmare. It's bloody great. Says the Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/film /reviews/article_display.jsp?rid=10285): The blood juxtaposed to the music is highly unsettling. It runs contrary to expectations. Burton pushes this gore into his audiences' fac...

HUNTING AND GATHERING: Tautou and Canet teams up!
2007-12-26 04:11:00
Before starting on the script, I wanted Charlotte Gainsbourg to play the role, because I wanted to work with her again. As I said, life is all about chance. Shortly afterwards, I went to New York and Audrey Tautou, who I had never met, was on the plane sitting next to me. We got to know each other, but didn’t talk about the book. She already knew that Charlotte had the role. However, two or three weeks later, Audrey told her agent that if Charlotte could not do the film, she would like to play Camille. As she is a generous girl, she did not want to take the role from Charlotte. says director Claude Berri. - - - - - - The acclaimed French director is talking about how he cast French star Audrey Tautou ( A Very Long Engagement, Amelie) in the lead role for his new film, Hunting and Gathering (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0792965) (Ensemble, c’est tout). PARIS, Romain Duris and Cédric Klapisch
2007-12-25 19:17:00
European cinema, more particularly French cinema boasts of the talented team of director Cédric Klapisch (http://www.cedric-klapisch.com/) and awesome actor Romain Duris (http://themovie-fanatic.com/romain_duris .htm). Duris, regarded as one of the most exciting and talented actors today, has been a regular in Klapisch film- playing the lead roles in both The Spanish Apartment (http://www.cedric-klapisch.com/index.php ?page=aubergeespagnole lang=eng) and Russian Dolls (http://www.cedric-klapisch.com/index.php ?page=lespoupeesrusses lang=eng)- two films highly successful at the box office. Now another collaboration. Says european-films.net: French director Cédric Klapisch wowed both French and international audiences with his quick-witted charmer L'auberge espagnole (The Spanish Apartment) from 2002, which introduced Romain Duris and Cécile de France to legions of new fans. The unsure student and his lesbian best friend returned for the sequel Les poupées...

Starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem Director: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen Release Date: November 21, 2007 Running time: 122 min MPAA Rating: R Distributors: Miramax Films, Paramount Vintage - - - Review by Jeremy Welsch - - - “It’s a mess, ain’t it, sheriff?” – Wendall “If it ain’t, it’ll do ‘til the mess gets here.” – Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, No Country for Old Men Stop me if you’ve heard this one. A welder, a hired gun, and an almost retired sheriff walk into a West Texas town. Each of the men is running. What they are running from, and toward, quietly becomes the foundation for the tapestry that is brilliantly woven in what is quite possibly the best movie this year.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
2007-12-23 13:29:00
Starring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Sacha Baron Cohen Director: Tim Burton Release Date: December 21, 2007 Running time: 117 min MPAA Rating: R Distributors: DreamWorks Pictures - - - Review by David DiMichele - - - The color red is the only element you'll find synonymous with Sweeney Todd and its Christmas holiday release date. Red as in the color of the blood that squirts impressionistically out from the necks of the helpless victims by ways of Sweeney himself. Adapted from the Broadway musical hit that Stephen Sondheim made famous, it’s only fitting that Tim Burton, the most creative director we have today, is combined with this dark, romantic, comedic and yet terrifying script. He must’ve been licking his chops when he got his paws on Sondheim’s musical. Glad he did. The two go together perfectly. This isn’t like your stage version. Burton’s dark, creative, and comedic direction proves a perfect fit for Sondheim&rsquo...

Starring: James McAvoy, Keira Knightley Director: Joe Wright Release Date: December 7, 2007 Running time: 123 min MPAA Rating: R Distributors: Universal Pictures and Focus Features - - - Review by David DiMichele - - - “It’s like something out of Heaven.” -soldier The quote is referring to a scene of an Army base which is made up of thousands of soldiers, both wounded and healthy, and huge boats stationed on the ocean front of France. A soldier expresses his feelings and this quote emphasizes his comfort because he and two others have been walking clueless by themselves during WWII after being split up from their brigade. We eventually find ourselves uttering this quote during this scene because sophomore director Joe Wright (first film Pride and Prejudice) captures it as if it’s gold, and that’s exactly what it turns out to be. For a solid 5-7 minutes the camera gives us, the audience, a first person point-of-view of the base. As if we’r...

MAKING WAVES: Why we love Ben Whishaw
2007-12-22 03:56:00
I've been out to LA a couple of times but, over there, the Grenouille in me always comes to the surface. I feel completely terrified, totally flummoxed, like I don't understand what the hell is going on. I've no desire at all to go back there, says the acclaimed British actor Ben Whishaw. While many actors would do anything to become a Hollywood star, here we have someone who is, at most, reluctant to even go to Hollywood! - - - - - - His role in I'm Not There (http://themovie-fanatic.com/im_not_there .htm) is so small that many of his fans (myself included) were simply disappointed. After playing the lead in Perfume, we expected to see him taking on more challenging roles. Perhaps we'll get that satisfaction in two of his upcoming films: Brideshead Revisited (http://themovie-fanatic.com/brideshead_r evisited.htm) and Bright Star (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0810784/). Oh and he got another film coming up: The Restraint of Beasts (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800177/)!

THE KITE RUNNER: Readers reacted negatively to NY Times review
2007-12-21 00:13:00
I always look forward to film reviews at the New York Times (http://movies.nytimes.com/movie). Aside from the intelligent take on many recent movies, the film reviewers are excellent writers- not only are the articles insightful and informative, they are also entertaining and offer unique perspectives on how films were made, how the actors portrayed the roles and other technicalities I have yet to discover about movies. One of the most awaited film (in my list, anyway and I guess in many film lovers) is The Kite Runner (http://www.kiterunnermovie.com/) and I absolutely looked forward to seeing the review at the NY Times. To my big disappointment, the reviewer Ms. Darghis failed to impress. In both novel and film form, “The Kite Runner” recounts a simple yet shrewd story about that favorite American pastime: self-improvement. Amir’s childhood mistake isn’t a careless juvenile offense; it’s a human stain that must be scrubbed out through self-abnegation...

If you’ve got an idea for a story, you can pretty much go and shoot it. Whereas fifteen or twenty years ago people weren’t into looking at home video films. I have the same feeling and gush of emotions when I watched Ditto Montiel (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1996918)'s 'A Guide to Recognizing your Saints' another awesome movie from another young filmmaker who really made waves with his film.

THE YEAR MY PARENTS WENT ON VACATION: One of Brazil's Best Films!
2007-12-19 04:18:00
For me, the movie deals with the possibilities of different ethnic groups living together in harmony, as exemplified by the soccer game between Italians, Jews and blacks. says director and writer Cao Hamburger. - - - - - - The Year My Parents Went on Vacation has been described as one of Brazil's most brilliant films. It is also their official entry into the Oscar Best Foreign Language film for 2008. What's the Movie About: In 1970 Brazil and the world seemed to have been turned upside-down, but the biggest worry in young 12 year-old Mauro’s mind had little or nothing to do with the proliferation of military dictatorships in South America or with the Vietnam war. His biggest dream was to see Brazil become the three-time winner of the World Cup.

Did 'juno' that JUNO has a widget?
2007-12-18 19:17:00
This year is no different from previous years when the awards season swings into high gear. You may be familiar with the usual flash banners of the Oscar contenders, and the fast loading trailers giving you the sneak peaks at these 'nominees' and why they must be 'considered'. But Jason Reitman's JUNO (http://www.foxsearchlight.com/juno/) offers something different. It's not actually the first time it's been seen, but it's very cool. It's a gigya (http://www.gigya.com/site/default.aspx) widget and you can have one too! Back to Juno , the movie is getting more and more buzz and is now being compared to last year's runaway hit, Little Miss Sunshine. Juno has a lot going for it and we think the movie really does deserve all the attention and buzz! Asked recently by firstshowing.net (http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/12/17/i nterview-with-junos-director-jason-reitma n/) Reitman was quite forthcoming: How did you come across Diablo Cody's script for Juno in the first place?...

I AM LEGEND smashes box office records!

Will Smith's latest movie I Am Legend smashes box office records! That's the latest news from Variety : Warner Bros.’ Will Smith starrer “I Am Legend” scored the best December opening of all time with $76.5 million over the weekend, while Fox’s live-action/CGI hybrid “Alvin and the Chipmunks” surpassed all expectations in debuting at an estimated $45 million. AND we have the review of the movie here: The main reason to see this movie is the powerful performance Will Smith gives all the way through. I guess we can call him a legend by now. It’s what Tom Hanks did in Cast Away but this one includes monstrous creatures. Smith is able to draw people in for any kind of movie - be it Wild, Wild West, Independence Day, Ali, or Pursuit of Happyness, the man just has that star power. There isn’t a shadow of a doubt that people won’t flock to see I Am Legend, in which Smith is the lone attraction (along with a loyal German shepherd)....

TWILIGHT NEWS: Robert Pattinson is Edward Cullen!

He may have met his 'death' in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but in 'Twilight ' he is immortal. The big news today is about British young actor Robe rt Pattinson being cast as the lead in the much-awaited film Stephenie Meyer (http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/), originally published in hardcover in 2005. The story is about seventeen-year-old Isabella Swan, a girl who moves to Forks, Washington and finds her life in danger when she falls in love with vampire Edward Cullen. We earlier reported (http://themovie-fanatic.com/kristen_stew art.htm) that the character Isabella Swan will be portrayed by Kristen Stewart. The casting of Pattinson was also good news to the author, Stephenie Meyer who posted her reaction: I am ecstatic with Summit's choice for Edward. There are very few actors who can look both dangerous and beautiful at the same time, and even fewer who I can picture in my head as Edward. Robert Pattinson is going to be amazing.
