It’s kind of a derogatory term if you think about it. I don’t know too many women who like to be referred to as ‘chicks’, and to go so far as to pigeon-hole a whole category of movies as a blanket statement seems equally shallow. Nevertheless, the term is an accepted one and is synonymous with sappy drivel that taken men the world over find themselves being repeatedly dragged to in the hopes of building up enough points to talk their better half into seeing the latest Die Hard movie.

ATONEMENT: One of the year's best!

Joe Wright's Atonement premiered at the Venice Film festival to much acclaim, but failed to win any major awards. It went on to become one of the year's most nominated films, notably at the Golden Globes. I think of Atonement as one of the best films of the year. It's a rare cinematic feat- a visual feast that satisfies on many levels- it's ambitious filmmaking from a talented director, has a terrific story, with stunning visuals, and features amazing performances- especially from James McAvoy and Keira Knightley. I've been out to LA a couple of times but, over there, the Grenouille in me always comes to the surface. I feel completely terrified, totally flummoxed, like I don't understand what the hell is going on. I've no desire at all to go back there, says the acclaimed British actor Ben Whishaw. Aside from the intelligent take on many recent movies, the film reviewers are excellent writers- not only are the articles insightful and informative, they are also entertaining and offer unique perspectives on how films were made, how the actors portrayed the roles and other technicalities I have yet to discover about movies.
