Movie Review: Invictus
2009-12-12 20:22:00
Starring: Morgan Freeman, Matt DamonDirector: Clint EastwoodRelease Date: December 11, 2009Running Time: 87 mins.MPAA Rating: PG-13 - for brief strong languageDistributor: Warner Bros. Pictures - - - A South African newspaper’s heading read “he won the election, now can he lead a country?” This unhopeful question is referring to Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman), who in 1994 was elected the first black President of an apartheid stricken South Africa. After emerging 27 years from prison for political upheaval, Mr. Mandela had no inclinations to seek revenge on the white Afrikaners who placed the cuffs on him. Instead he disarms any such thought, and the film, entitled Invictus after an 1875 poem by British writer William Earnest Henley, is attracted to the passive stance which had, at its focal point, the sport of ruby. Rugby is a primitive sport that glorifies brutality. A character in the film refers to it as a hooligans’ game. A bunch of ferocious men never hesitate to jolt...

Starring: Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie PortmanDirector: Jim SheridanRelease Date: December 4, 2009Running Time: 110 mins.MPAA Rating: R - for language and some disturbing violent contentDistributor: Lionsgate- - - Jim Sheridan's latest film Brothers is neither a failure, nor a triumph.  In fact, it's difficult to define what, exactly, it is.  At times it's an interesting examination of the way war affects everyone both directly and peripherally.  At other times, Brothers seem to think it's supposed to be a frightening psychological thriller.  I suppose it really it is both, but is uneven on both counts. Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) have a modest, but idyllic life with their two daughters.  He was the high school football player, she the cheerleader, they were high school sweethearts.  Sam's brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) is the bright, but unmotivated fuck up who, at the beginning of the film, is just being release...

tMF CONTROVERSIAL: A matter of principle or professionalism? Jamie Bell's &
2009-12-09 15:08:00
There is a small controversy regarding one of the supporting roles in Tom Ford's A Single Man. The said role of 'Kenny' who was portrayed in the film by Nicholas Hoult to good reviews was first offered to another young actor. The said actor who remained 'unnamed' by Ford was actually Jamie Bell. The Playlist took notice and said: While it wasn't the first time the issue was brought up, Ford continues to refuse to name the actor, presumably out of respect. Unfortunately for Ford, and the actor in question, early announcements of the film's development and production reveal that the aforementioned actor was very likely fellow Brit, Jamie Bell. [ read more ] We first took note of this way back during the filming of A Single Man and mentioned it once again in our interview with Mr. Hoult... - - -Says Ford about Hoult getting the role: The (one who was originally cast) actor didn't show up the first day he was due. He was attached for six months and we had made ...

tMF OSCARWATCH: Brothers, A Single Man, The Lovely Bones...
2009-12-08 07:01:00
Three of my most anticipated movies have been released already - Brothers , The Lovely Bones and A Single Man. Two of them, A Single Man and Brothers, seem to be getting the kind of attention and raves they deserved while The Lovely Bones is now considered as one of the most divisive in regards to critics' assessment of the said Peter Jackson film. So what's the latest buzz right this minute? - - - - - - A Single Man: The recent win as Best Actor for Colin Firth at the Venice Film Fest appears to be a good omen for Tom Ford's directorial debut. I have yet to read anything 'drastically' negative about it. - - -Says Karina Longworth, who is now with INDIEWire: In his boldest visual choice, Ford manipulates the film's palette to match the evolving emotional tone. George's flashbacks are generally crayon-colored and his present desaturated and neutral, but in fleeting moments of pleasure -- a flirtation, a run-in with a precociously honest child, an opportunity...

Movie Review: Fantastic Mr. Fox
2009-12-04 06:26:00
Starring: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill MurrayDirector: Wes AndersonRelease Date: November 25, 2009Running Time: 87 mins.MPAA Rating: R - for some violence, disturbing images and languageDistributor: 20th Century Fox- - -My relationship with the movies of Wes Anderson can best be described as strained, to say the least.  I have a sympathetic ear for the dysfunction he makes his characters wallow in each movie, but aren’t they all really just singing the same song; that a family, no matter how damaged and quirky, can get through anything as long as they stick together?  He has a definitive style but more and more I get the impression that he is really telling a variation of the same story and trying to hide it by out-weirding the last one.  Considering it to be my loudest objection to his movies, I find it curious that one of the biggest compliments I can give Fantastic Mr. Fox is that it feels like a Wes Anderson movie. Without having a sense of hope, no matter how delusional or faith oriented it may be, we become savages. The Road , based on the 2006 novel by Cormac McCarthy, follows the dreams of two anguished souls, a father and son, as they fight for their survival in a post-apocalyptic America. It is a bleak and systematic tale that produces poignant activity long after the film is over. The picture painted before us by director John Hillcoat, with a script by Joe Penhall, initiates a curious thought amongst us viewers of what has just passed before our eyes and to acknowledge how ambiguous it all truly is. RUMORS VS. FACTS: Casting war! Anne Hathaway, Julia Stiles, Rachel McAdams,
2009-11-20 06:50:00
Four awesome young actresses are reported/rumored to be positioning themselves for a possible role in the next Spiderman movie. The character in contention: The Black Cat. But before we go any further, is this newsworthy? Definitely. While it maybe just a fictional character, Black Cat is quite interesting and intriguing. She's been related to Spiderman in the past and her descent into the world of crime is worth a good look. Has casting actually started? No confirmation yet from the studio, but with the names of the actresses being mentioned, fans are, indeed, getting excited. Two of these fab actresses are known for both period and contemporary films - Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married/Becoming Jane) and Romola Garai ( Inside I'm Dancing/Atonement), while the other two - Julia Stiles and Rachel McAdams are more 'inclined' to portray modern characters, or so it seems... As of this writing, McAdams is already out of contention. Enter... Eliza Dushku! (nahhh, sh...
