Inflation goes to 8.75% a big issue

New Delhi: India's inflation rate rose to 8.75 per cent for the week ended on May 31 from 8.24 per cent the week before, according to official data released here on Friday.The sharp rise in the inflation rate was for the week before the central government announced significant hikes in transport and cooking fuel prices. Analysts now fear the inflation rate may touch double digits, though the government has said it is trying its best to hold the price line.The official data showed an upward trend in prices of both food and non-food items in the week under review. The prices of food items rose 0.6 per cent and of non-food items 1.9 per cent.Within these major categories, mustard oil price showed a sharp rise of 6 per cent, oil cakes and cottonseed oil 3 per cent and groundnut oil 1 per cent. San Francisco: Yahoo has entered an agreement to run some Google 's ads on its search pages after acquisition talks with Microsoft ended in failure, the web pioneer has said.The deal reached on Thursday may add $800 million a year to Yahoo's sales, but the companies will delay implementation till October to give the US Justice Department time for review, Yahoo said."The agreement enables Yahoo to run ads supplied by Google alongside Yahoo's search results and on some of its web properties in the US and Canada," said Yahoo. "The agreement will enhance Yahoo's ability to achieve its goal to grow operating cash flow significantly."Announcement of the Google deal came after Yahoo disclosed that Microsoft had officially ended talks aimed at securing an acquisition agreement with it. Stronger Dollar, Weaker Demand Undercuts Crude Oil prices ended lower, giving up an earlier advance as the dollar held its gains against the euro and the Energy Department slashed its oil consumption projections. Retail gasoline prices rose to a new record over $4.04 a gallon. Light, sweet crude for July delivery fell $3.04 to settle at $131.31 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The dollar rose on recent supportive comments by U.S. officials, prompting selling by investors who had bought commodities such as oil as a hedge against inflation. Also, a stronger dollar makes oil more expensive to investors overseas. In other Nymex trading, July gasoline futures fell 7.47 cents to settle at $3.3193 a gallon, and July heating oil futures fell 6.46 cents to settle at $3.8124 a gallon.
