Soft, Squeezable, Huggable Phone
2008-02-27 14:22:00
Imagine a phone made from cotton. Soft , pliable, and light yet never compromising on power or performance. The Soft Phone concept by designer Qian Jiang takes what we know about electronic cellulose structures and squeezes every last ounce of performance out of it, literally! It’s a series of discs with electronic fabric stretched in between. The interface uses a combination of tactile gestures like squeezing to hang-up and touch which detects a deformation on the surface to register input. The fibers are fine enough and optically clear allowing light energy to pass thru to display simple contextual menus. Whenever you need a full QWERTY just unfurl the collapsible structure. The cell antenna, battery, camera, and micro electronics are contained inside a tiny clip which itself is made of soft, squeezable, stress-reducing silica. One thing this phone concept did do away with is a receiver because didn’t you know people in the future only use hands-free wireless technologies? Your Spoon is Doomed

2008-02-27 14:20:00
Spoons are so last year. Who has time to find a clean one, lift your hand, swirl your wrist to mix in sugar with your tea or coffee, tap the spoon dry or lick it and then place it back on the plate? I mean really, are we animals!? No, most of us are not. So that is why Florian Dussopt, JĂ©rĂ©mie Reneau & Julie Girard got together and created the “Ceramix For Mix” saucer and cup design. All sarcasm aside, this is a elegant and simple design. Incorporating a molded glass groove (resembling a roulette wheel) that acts as a track for a ceramic ball as well as keep you from choking to death on it, the user is inclined to swirl the cup using centrifugal force to mix your beverage. I applaud the design and am still pondering its need over my premixed vanilla latte.Designer: Florian Dussopt, JĂ©rĂ©mie Reneau & Julie GirardSource: yankodesign.com

Born to be Mild!
2008-02-27 14:16:00
Some green concepts make their environmental statements by incorporating sustainable materials or technology, others simply draw attention to the issue by their design. Then there is “The Thunderbolt” Scooter Concept by Henrik Björkman. Though there is nothing groundbreaking about an electric scooter, my grandmother had one after all, there are a few interesting features behind The Thunderbolt Electric Scooter. The electro-magnetic power train is neatly housed in the rear wheel itself. Where one would normally find liquified dead dinosaurs, you can now store an alfalfa sandwich and herbal tea, where one might find a Earth unfriendly combustible engine, there is a huge gapping hole. This hole, or “anti-engine,” is a not-so-subtle protest against all combustible engines and does a pretty fair job of making us re-evaluate the way we look at modes of transportation and their form factors. With a range of about 70 kms on a three hour charge, you can easily “get your (non)motor...
Dinnertime just got ballsy

2008-02-27 14:14:00
Pool Table manufacturers are constantly having to find new ways to justify their huge expense and massive real-estate usage. They also need to compete for attention from the internet, Video On-Demand and social-centric video games like Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution and pretty much anything on Nintendo’s Wii. Given these massive challenges, the Billiard Industry has looked to innovative design to save their ever shrinking markets. This “Fusion” pool table/dining room table was created by Aramith, long-time leading manufacturer in the billiard industry, the Fusion dining table innovates by adding multi-functionality as it combines a dining table, a pool table and a game table all in one. Multi-purpose functionality just might save the industry from going the way of the Dodo, or until Microsoft decides to add a billiards game to its “Surface” Table initiative.Product Page: FusionTablesSource: yankodesign.com
A Droplet of Light
2008-02-27 14:13:00
The Drop Lamp combines Murano mastery and engineering in a suspended lamp that looks like a droplet of water frozen in space. The natural characteristics of Murano means no two lamps are identical, that is until you accidentally drop them. Then they all look the same - a million pieces of broken glass or “tears” because you just know this lamp is a budget buster if it ever goes into production.Designer: ITlab Design Laboratory [ Manufacturer: Andromeda ]Source: yankodesign.com

Window To The World
2008-02-27 14:10:00
Some technology concepts just make sense the second you see them. This concept tablet ultra-connected device by Tokyo resident Mac Funamizu, has me wishing for tomorrow today. Though he has not named it as of yet, I will drink the potion and call it “The Looking Glass.” The idea is simple, by incorporating a camera/scanner, GPS and internet connectivity, the world is literally at your finger tips. Just frame anything you desire behind the glass window, from a building, to a car or piece of art and the image will be analyzed and searched on any number of sites like wikipedia, google or google earth. Want to know about a word in a book or magazine? Simply frame it up and touch the word. Instant access to any number of learning aids eg. dictionary, thesaurus or reference databases will have you clued in in seconds.Check out how the designer uses it to identify a particular floor of a building by simply clicking on it. Frame up a restaurant and get its menu or make a reservation

“i” Meme + Lipstick = iStick
2008-02-27 14:08:00
Designer Alexei Mikhailov isn’t out to convince people his iStick concept is the perfect mobile convergence device. In fact he clearly points out the iStick isn’t for viewing movies and the screen is too small for effective photo viewing. What it does have is a visual replication of the iPhone/Touch space inside a device the size of a lipstick tube.Big square icons and of course Coverflow let you navigate the Mac way. What’s interesting is his surface design. All four surfaces are touchscreens which could present some interesting and unique interface design. The integrated WIFI also enables you to browse iTunes. It’s not an iPod replacement per say. Think of it more as a big brother to the iPod Shuffle.Designer: Alexei MikhailovSource: yankodesign.con

Color Security
2008-02-27 14:06:00
Who needs fingerprints, retinal scanners, and other biometric do-dads? When it comes to security a rubik’s cube is all you need (not really). This Color Cube allows the user to create their own color combination in lieu of the usual text based password. Whenever you need to verify your identity, just solve your rubik’s cube. The color combinations are endless since you can even embed little pictures within each tiny screen. Take it a step further and make it a time based entry - solve the cube before time runs out and the colors change.Designer: Cheng-Li HungSource: yankodesign.com

Trendy People Need This Phone

The Edge phone is designed for the style conscious fashionistas. The name has nothing to do with data speed. In fact we don’t even know what this phone is capable of because as with all fashion phones, looks rein supreme and the Edge phone makes sure you notice with its glowing glass keyboard. To answer an incoming call, slide the glass keyboard out. An embedded LED illuminates the etched numerics via refraction creating a glowing effect. The only visible lines is the microphone wiring which designer Chris Owens has cleverly disguised as a keyboard border.Designer: Chris OwensSource: yankodesign.com

Lighter-Than-Air Lights
2008-02-20 15:04:00
LED technology is probably the greatest thing to happen in illumination since the invention of the candle. LED’s are energy efficient, cool to the touch and give off a clean, attractive light. Designer Luc Schouten has elevated LED usage to new heights with this whimsical “Floating Light” design that uses helium filled latex balloons anchored by a small LED base. With multiple light effect settings like strobe, flash and glow, these Floating Light balloons are great for temporary (10 hour lifespan) use at special events, clubs, discos or even lavish house parties.Designer: Luc SchoutenSource: yankodesign.com

The ‘Bedu’ Emergency Rapid Response by Toby McInnes is a breath of functional air. It is designed to fit within the current logistical framework and features just about everything you could possibly need. All rolled up neatly in a barrel. Design That Grows With You
2008-02-20 14:57:00
One of the biggest concerns for new parents in making any new purchase is whether or not a product will grow with their child. From clothing, to shoes, and even furniture, true value comes from any product that can last as long as possible. Double points are earned with parents when a design can also have multiple uses. Design ers Frank & Stanimira Rafaschieri have clearly addressed these concerns when conceiving their children’s furniture concepts dubbed “Evolutionary chair and Low hygiene table”. By creating a line that both grows and expands with a child and converts for multiple uses, they have successfully achieved the one two punch of industrial design.Designer: Frank & Stanimira RafaschieriSource: yankodesign.com The evolutionary chair includes a rehaussor, a small chair and a low table. The components of the evolutionary chair combine and pile on top of each other in order to propose eight possible combinations that can be used in different context, including fo...
Nokia N830 WiMAX-equipped internet tablet photo leaked?
2008-02-20 12:12:00
Just when you think Nokia doesn't have any more tricks up its sleeve -- wham! the WiMAX-equipped N830 internet tablet gets all up in your section (maybe). According to a sweet, sweet photo which appeared in Best Buy's February Mobile Buyer's Guide, the Finnish giant is preparing to unleash a new version of its popular N810 tablet, and it seems like this could be the rumored WiMAX device that we've heard whispers about. Of course, this could also just be a new paint job and refreshed number -- though something in our heart tells us that ain't the case. Word on the street is that we'll know what's up come CTIA. In the meantime, feel free to zoom, zoom, and zoom some more on this picture, and check out the full page of the brochure after the break. (Source: engadget.com)

When Is A Chair Not A Chair?
2008-02-20 12:07:00
This is more of an abstract concept hinging on art than a full on envisage of a real product. Dream Of A Toilet asks an interesting question about how we define objects by their function. We’ve given them all different names but what if somehow, someway we forgot what everything was called. All we knew was how to use it. Everything we sit on just because a seat regardless if it’s a lounge chair or toilet. Is this sense of design ubiquity ridiculous or as humans do we always have to categorize everything into further sub-catergories?Designer: Min-Kyu AnSource: yankodeisng.com

It’s Like I’m Raving Everywhere I Go
2008-02-20 12:04:00
The Music Light isn’t the first light show device generated by measuring certain frequencies of sound. In fact there are already a few on the market. This one takes it one step further because sound can be visualized in a way no current product on the market can do. Instead of just flashing, you can see pulses of light move up and down the cords, pulsating, rippling, shifting colors even.I personally think it doesn’t do much for the wearer since I’m hard pressed to ever stare at my cord, but for passer-bys I’m sure will bring up nostalgic feelings of dark club scenes with laser shows and glow sticks.Designer: Terence WoonSource: yankodesign.com
Paper Scale
2008-02-20 12:02:00
This was bound to happen but Duck Image Studio is the first (that we know of) to apply paper electronic technology to a scale. The ultra thin flexible scale combines a pressure sensing sheet that relays information to an e-paper display. It’s waterproof, easy to clean, and can be rolled up for storage. In this particular example the technology is kept small in the form of a traditional scale but imagine a large bath mat or even floor tiles. Of course I’m not sure I’d want to know how much I weighed every time I stepped into the bathroom. This thing will only further solidify Americans are overweight and dammit I’m not ready to deal with my weight issues. The Evolution Of Our Favorite Car Logos
2008-02-20 09:10:00
Have you ever wondered why the Audi in front of you has a logo of four interlocked rings? Did you know that the Cadillac emblem was inspired by a family crest of a nobleman who later turned out to be a fraud? Or that Volkswagen was Hitler’s idea?Let’s take a look at the fascinating stories behind the logos of some of the most popular cars in the world! Alfa Romeo’s distinctive logo was created in 1910 by a draftsman named Romano Cattaneo. One day, while waiting for a tram at the Piazza Castello station in Milan, he was inspired by the red cross in the Milan Flag and the Coat of Arms of the noble House of Visconti, which featured a biscione (grass snake) with a man in its jaws, symbolizing "Visconti’s enemies that the snake [was] always ready to destroy." Two Savoia dynasty knots separated the words ALFA and MILANO.The Romeo part came in 1916 when Neapolitan businessman Nicola Romeo bought the company and converted its factories to produce munitions and machineries for World ...

ReTHINKING ReSOURCES
2008-02-20 08:46:00
Forty percent of the worldÂŽs energy is used by buildings. More than fifty percent of the greenhouse gases come from buildings and the construction industry. Mexican architectural firm, ReCURSO Studios, has these eye opening environmental facts well understood when they set out to design this modern showcase of low impact, sustainable architecture. By being conscious of not only the end result form, but also the process of building, and all materials used throughout construction, ReCURSO (Spanish for ReSOURCE) hopes to influence change in how the construction industry constructs. This newly commissioned, private residence gently sits in one of the last remaining untouched areas of Mexico City. With a minimal footprint and open air design, this property will hopefully inspire more firms to think green, every step of the way.Architect: ReCURSO StudioSource: yankodesign.com

Social Adaption Seating
2008-02-20 08:38:00
So you spent a near fortune on a perfect sofa and coffee table for that great party you are going to throw, but true to human nature, most of your guest will invariably end up in or around the kitchen. They are, after all, only human and adapting to the fact that all the booze and grub is flowing from the kitchen area. It was this adaptive nature in all of us that inspired this social seating design by Tab Turnmire. Let’s face it, when socializing people will sit on almost anything. So designing a seating area that can adapt from table top to seat was a stroke of near genius. Perfect for any lobby or coffee shop layout, these seats/tables/seats easily make sense

CD Player Concept, Even Tho It’s 2008
2008-02-19 11:38:00
Sure CD sales have steadily declined but that doesn’t stop some designers from envisaging new concepts created just for pure audiophiles. The Pandora Alcantara is a wall mounted CD player that borrows a little of today’s tilt sensing technologies to make the disc player more relevant. The remote control comes in the form of a tilt sensing bar fitted with a wait for it. . . touchscreen. Leaving the bar vertical lets you control volume while the horizontal position lets you scrub thru tracks.Of course for a technology as “archaic” as CDs, there’s gotta be a gimmick to lure buyers in. That’s why the Pandora is completely covered in Alcantara - a super luxurious suede like material found only in exotic luxury cars and yachts.Designer: Antoine Lebrun & Volkan AkbiyikSource: yankodesign.com

Wow, they look like Beatles from way up here

Liverpudlians (people from Liverpool, England) have stepped away from their industrial based origins and have more to be proud about than simply being the birthplace of the Beatles . So proud are they of their docks along the River Mersey, harbor and skyline, the city has commissioned the design of a public observatory. The Mersey Observatory will be a coastal beacon with panoramic views of the entire Liverpool Bay. London based; Phos Architects have designed this light house inspired concept that evokes visions of the Tower of Babel meets Second Life. Emirates Truck Factory | The Huge Road Train that can Transport up to 2300
2008-02-18 12:01:00
This thing might even conquer the Moon, with little modification(Source: indianpad.com)Huge Road Train , led by two locomotives, described on this site may have already become a reality – the ultra-powerful, gas-gobbling monstrosity, that only miniature train enthusiasts, apocalyptic cult followers and Mad Max movie sequel producers would love. United Arab Emirates once again set out to conquer Sahara wastes – this time with 3,700 camel (er
horse) power under each hood. Each vehicle on the train has its own all-wheel-drive and all-wheel-steering by-wire – with the ability of some wheels (middle axle-lines) to be lifted during the empty haul.- they can be used in two directions- each truck has MULTIPLE engines, totalling up to 3700 hp.- the road train uses electric drive system which is unique in the industry.- apparently hooking up many trucks provides costs savings more than 25%

The movie for children will be in the VFX medium, using computer-generated special effects. It will be a movie featuring a lot of children who wish for bad things, but get a shocking reality check when they come true, Shah Rukh told Patrick Frater of Hollywood's top trade magazine Variety in a recent interview in Berlin. He is talking to Eros Multimedia and Charles Darby (of The Matrix and Minority Report fame), the visual effects guru, who recently co-ventured with Eros to launch Mumbai-based special effects Eyeqube Studios.Shah Rukh said he was planning the movie under his home banner, Red Chillies Productions.
