The Greatest Show on Earth!
2008-02-11 11:38:00 Kipnis' outer limits theater, or what $6 million will buy.(Source: audiovideointeriors.com)When it comes to home theaters, I thought I'd seen it all. But nothing's come close to this. First, I'm going to try to describe the sheer magnitude of Jeremy Kipnis' theater. His Stewart Snowmatte laboratory-grade screen is the biggest I've ever seen in a home, and in the back of the theater, there's a Sony ultra-high-resolution (4,096-by-2,160) SRX-S110 digital projector. I'm looking everywhere, jotting down questions, and Kipnis sounds almost giddy talking about his theater's capabilities. He refers to his baby, the Kipnis Studio Standard (KSS), as "The Greatest Show on Earth ." And from the looks of it, he may be right. While the KSS is technically an 8.8-channel audio system, it uses a lot more than eight speakers and eight subwoofers. Kipnis felt that a lone center speaker sounded a tad undernourished compared with the eight Snell THX Cinema & Music Reference towers, so he opt...
Hi-Tech Replaces R2-D2… Wait, huh?
2008-02-11 11:30:00 Thanks to some very industrious Belgians, Obi-Wan Kenobi has a new way of picking up his messages. Aptly dubbed the HOLOCUBE, inventor Joris Vanbriel is targeting retailers and manufacturers trying to attract Generation X&Y shoppers plagued by short attention spans. Marketing to this demographic has become more and more difficult, with veins filled of caffeine and sugar, myspace, texting, iPods and that damn rock & roll…wait, what was my point? Oh yeah, by being the first to market with a low-maintenance, counter-top 3D holographic display, the HOLOCUBE has high hopes of bringing 3D holographic technology to the masses. Packed in a stylish doppelganger for Apple’s HiFi, is a 40 gig hard drive that delivers over 18 hours of compressed video. Many Bothans died to bring us this information.Designer: Joris VanbrielSource: yankodesign.com More About: Tech , Hi Tech , Wait
Alternate Dimensions Down Under
2008-02-11 11:22:00 Is it a bottle in front of me, or a frontal lobotomy? Anyway you look at this mind blowing wonder of math and the space-time continuum, the Klein Bottle House by architects McBride Charles Ryan, is stunning. For us right-brain thinkers; in Mathematics, the “Klein Bottle” is a non-orientable surface, i.e., a surface (a two-dimensionaltopological space) with no distinction between the “inside” and “outside” surfaces. That being said and hopefully understood, this vacation home located just a few clicks outside Melbourne, Australia beautifully reflects a deep desire to mess with both sides of our brains. By constantly challenging our sense of perception, depth, linear orientation, interior/exterior space and pretty much any notion of what a dwelling should look like, the architects have successfully created a space that is surprisingly inviting and warm. Now can someone please show me to the door?Architect: McBride Charles Ryan [ Photo by John Gollings ]Source: yankodesign.com

Ayesha Takia loses roles by refusing to Strip
2008-02-09 15:49:00 Ayesha Takia is shooting down roles that require her to wear skimpy clothes or get intimate with her co-star because she doesn't want to embarrass her family and boyfriend.Ayesha is aware that her more uninhibited colleagues are benefiting while she refuses to get bold on camera.'But I don't mind losing out on roles. At least 10 years from now I don't want to look back and cringe at anything. I've a family and a boyfriend. And I don't want to embarrass anyone,' Ayesha, who was recently seen in Sunday in a clean role, told IANS.'There're things that I wouldn't do, like kiss and wear certain kinds of clothes. And yes that does put me at a disadvantage. But I'm very happy with the work that I'm getting. After Dor, I'm being taken seriously as an actress.'She said no to Nagesh Kukunoor, who made Dor.'I just couldn't do the kissing scene in Aashayein. Saverclip Shames Your Electricity Usage
2008-02-09 15:30:00 The Saverclip is a clothespin like device that reads electric usageon any power cable it’s clipped onto. Say for example the slow cooker crock pot you leave on all day. How much power is it actually using and would the results make you change your mind to using something faster, like a pressure cooker? The device works by reading the electromagnetic fields emitted by said devices. Conversely, this is also how it recharges itself. The embedded LCD displays information in laymen terms so you clearly understand just how much power you’re using, wasting, and could be saving.Designer: Tsunho Wang, Insu Wang, Jongheui Lee & Youngdon LeeSource: yankodesign.com More About: Electricity , Usage

Don’t drop the soap…
2008-02-09 13:34:00 A bar ofsoap is probably one of the most efficient product designs ever created. Rub it where you want to be clean and eventually the bar just fades away…mostly. Not many things in life are more physically challenging than attempting to hold on to that little sliver of sudsy salvation. Drop ping the soap can sometimes have lethal results, whether by slip-or-fall or for our “legally challenged” citizens, that fate worse than death. Enter the “Soap Bank” by DesigNoDoubt, a brilliantly conceived idea that serves to efficiently wrangle that unruly soap. Simply slip the soap into the supplied slot and see how safe and squeaky clean savings can surely be. Simple.Designer: Wooteik Lim, Yeonha Jo, Sungwoo Park & Yoonha PaickSource: yankodesing.com
Flair for your Square of Air
2008-02-09 13:27:00 Modern times being what they are, with sky high real estate prices and space in most larger cities running out quickly, designers are constantly put to task and have made “Necessity the Mother of Invention” yet again. Apartment living can be both practical and convenient for urban centric lifestyles, but the limited space available in most squares-of-air is usually enough to drive us to prescription drugs. I’m not really sure Tyler Durden would approve, but creating your little utopia in the sky just got a easier. Introducing the “Summer at the Balcony” by Christian Lessing. This multi-piece balcony wall unit looks inspired by retail store shelves and displays. By allowing for the easy adjustment of any number of surfaces, from a stool, to a bistro table, to even a flower pot holder, designing your perfect balcony space is easy as finding a Gap in mid-town Manhattan.Designer: Christian LessingSource: yankodesign.com More About: Square , Flair
The Bionic Chameleon Truck
2008-02-09 13:24:00 Nature didn’t make many mistakes with organic forms and wise designers like Haishang Deng understand solves for our problems can often be found just by studying what nature has already done. Enter the Chameleon Truck .This bionic cargo transport uses an innovative segmented body remarkably like that of a centipede. This enables the truck to adjust its size to the cargo load. The resilient soft tarpaulin shelled body is strong enough to protect its cargo but also absorbs impacts in case of accidents. As an added benefit fuel savings abound since the truck’s weight is slashed in half.Another innovative design feature is the drive cockpit which cranes over its cargo instead of being built into the frame like most vehicles today. This enables automated front loading without the need for additional support.Designer: Haishan DengSource: yankodesign.com More About: Bionic
S-series - Sleek, Sophisticated Mobile Phone by Simon Enever
2008-02-09 13:12:00 Today’s range of phones leaves a lot to be desired in terms of design, the aim of the game being to cram as many functions as possible into a lumpy box of endless buttons. The S-series however steps back from this approach and sets off in a radically different design direction by combining sleek, sophisticated styling with top quality materials all put together in a compact package, to make the whole experience of looking at and owning the phone just as pleasurable as using it.The phone is aimed at people who want to stand out and make a statement, without compromising on features. Designed in such a way that almost every key feature, from using the camera to making and receiving calls, is easily operated without the need to flip out the keypad and waste time.Designer: Simon EneverSource: yankodesign.com More About: Mobile , Phone , Mobile Phone , Series
Ghost in the Shell…
2008-02-09 13:10:00 “There is nothing quite so good as burial at sea. It is simple, tidy, and not very incriminating.” - Alfred Hitchcock. Truer words can not be spoken and the designers of the “Shell” Urn by LOTS of Limited are clearly on the same wavelength as the Master of Suspense. Evolving past religious dogma, the designers have created a unique and dignified way to leave this reality, while at the same time celebrating your appreciation for nature and good design.. one last time. Created out of bio-degradable pressed paper, the “Shell” dissolves over time and leaves us with nothing but a beautiful memory. Another unique feature is the ability to write messages directly on the urn or place notes and objects in a pocket located on top, leaving that all important “last word” up for grabs.Designer: Lots DesignSource: yankodesign.com More About: Ghost
Shed This Metal Coil…
2008-02-09 13:08:00 We can all agree that art is mostly subjective. Industrial design is usually not spared the cynical judgement imposed on traditional art, but none the less, is subject to just as much criticism. Which brings me to this piece of “furniture”. It was virtually delivered to Yanko Design with the proper amount of artsy rhetoric, as well as being mysteriously named “Made by a Piece of Paper” by Jingjing Yao. My challenge as a writer for Yanko Design is to literally figure out what it is, does, function as or inspire us to do. I can’t seem to find a flat surface for holding a Miller Lite, so scratch the coffee table idea. There is not a slot for placing art or a book, so it’s not a shelf. I am not really sure I would want to sit on it, so it’s not a stool. Oh, I give up. Anyone out there have a clue?Designer: Jingjing YaoSource: yankodesign.com More About: Metal
Tree That Grows Water
2008-02-09 13:05:00 My my, these Korean designers just never run out of ideas. The latest is a Water Tree . Hear us out. Imagine a pendent lamp over your dining room table. Now imagine if that lamp had fruit. Imagine if that fruit held water. And while we’re at it lets say that water is filtered. That’s the Water Tree concept. You never have to leave the dining table when thirsty. Alls you do is reach up and pull one of the “fruits”. Just remember blue ones are cold, red ones are hot. And don’t forget to put them back to get a refill. But sensei, how do I know when the filter needs a changing? Grasshopper, just pay attention to the color changing fruit. If they’re grey, then obviously it’s time.Just a concept for now but an intriguing one. A clever attempt at combining the natural with artificial.Designer: Woo Seok Park, Jin Hee Kim & Hyung Kim Source: yankodesign.com

DeCon Post Modernism meets Gaudi in Singapore
2008-02-07 08:25:00 Institutions of higher learning are not generally associated with any form of modern architecture. Aside from a few notables like Art Center School of Design in Pasadena and a hand full of others scattered around the globe, most people generally associate finer colleges and universities with stoic, stone carved vestiges of a time when men wore velvet and women were discouraged from even reading about velvet. A perfect example of how far we have come from that era is the LaSalle SIA Art College in Singapore . Housing six different schools of art in one fluid structure, architectural firm RSP have created an “Art Canyon” effect that successfully focuses the living energy internally. This internal focus ingeniously serves a dual purpose; by creating a creative hive effect of activity, while at the same time saving valuable real estate in a city quickly running out of usuable space. A near perfect example of form following function.Architect: RSPSource: yankodesign.com More About: Post , Gaudi , Post Modernism
The most ATTRACTIVE curtains ever made
2008-02-07 08:22:00 Sure some curtains attempt to dazzle us with features like lace fringe or intricate pleats, while others have the sole purpose of simply blocking out the sun. Anyway you look at them, they serve a purpose in almost any space. From keeping our domestic activities private to framing a view, curtains are as ubiquitous as the walls they are attached to. Curtain designer Florian Kräutli has bravely dragged the Window Treatment Industry into the 19th Century by incorporating magnet technology into every panel. Embedding hundreds of evenly dispersed tiny magnets into a grid of prefab folds allows for the easy manipulation of the silhouette or strategically modifying exposure for light and/or privacy.Designer: Florian KrautliSource: yankodesign.com More About: Made , Attractive

If you ask us, it's simply a matter of time before Apple's CEO Steve Jobs announces the next price cut just as he did with initial iPhone 4GB/8GB models. As far as European carrier... Clever Bird Feeder
2008-02-06 11:08:00 The Song Bird bird feeder does double duty by protecting your stores of grain from unscrupolous squirrels while providing temporary shelter for birds to feed. The feeder can be hung or staked into the ground. Turn it upside down to fill it with food. Once you invert it, food comes down two narrow channels on either side of the opening in the middle.Of course if I know my squirrels, those little bastards will figure out how to outsmart this feeder too.Designer: Sehwan OhSource: yankodesign.com More About: Clever , Feeder
WHY WE REALLY FEAR NEEDLES…
2008-02-06 11:00:00 The Dutch town of Vesterbro really have a thing about needles. So bad is the problem with bloody or possibly HIV infected needles being found throughout city centers, parks, beaches and stair wells, that there is actually need for this device. It’s called the Urban Needle Box by Hån Pham, and this Zippo Lighter sized storage container is simple in design but tackles a complex and growing drug problem worldwide. As a convenient and clearly marked receptacle for used needles, the makers of the Urban Needle Box hope it to be a ubiquitous item in any drug abusers inventory.CORRECTION. Here is information from the designer: Vesterbro is a town part in Copenhagen which has lived with this problem for more than 30 years.
