Really High Fashion
2008-05-18 13:37:00 Beat this toy Brad and Angelina! French Luxury Brand HermĂ©s teamed up with Eurocopter to introduce the âLâhelicoptre par HermĂšsâ, the most tricked-out, super-stylish way to fly since the Spruce Goose (look it up). This unprecedented collaboration started as just a design exercise. Italian designer Gabriele Pezzini was brought in to work with Eurocopter engineers and HermĂšs craftsmen to create the final design. Lâhelicoptre par HermĂšs is based on the eurocpter EC135, the companyâs best selling lightweight, twin-engined helicopter. Beauty is not just skin deep either, aside from surface changes, Pezzini set out to create small and clever innovations that improved the overall experience for the user and streamlined the helicopterâs production. Pezzini worked closely with HermĂšs craftsmen and the Eurocopter engineers to create a set of modifications that would transform the basic model into something much more impressive. One of the major modifications was done to the h... More About: Fashion , High

Lean and Clean Balancing Machine
2008-03-22 09:13:00 If you are like me and live in a place that has pressed dirt for walls (a.k.a. dry wall), the idea of hanging art, window shades or especially a book shelf, is not only an engineering feat in itself, but also a serious anxiety inducer. These types of walls seem to crumble at the very idea of being punctured by a screw, nail or dirty look. In a perfect world, all walls would be made from super durable, screw loving materials. They would also be sound proof and bullet proofâŠyou never know. Well, if you are one of the lucky few with Dura-walls, you can still get your anxiety fix from this clever bookshelf design by Denis Oh - no he didnât! Like a circus balancing act, this bookshelf called âMaintain The Balance of Your Knowledge!â shifts and swings from side to side depending on the placement of your books. If your books on politics tend to lean to the left, so does your shelf, if it is more to the right, then the shelf will go with the flow and lean towards war in Iraq. Weight... Advanced Go-Carting
2008-03-19 12:21:00 When someone says your car looks or drives like a go-cart itâs not considered a good thing. Despite how much fun they are, it seems no one wants their car compared to one. Maybe transportation designer Florian Dobe can put a spin on the stereotype with this little concept. Sporting tiny 10âł rims, this vehicle is equal parts sportscar and go-cart.It has been created with two distinct âstatesâ in mind, an open and a closed. In the open state itâs the 2 seater go-cart inspired sportscar, and in the closed sate the seats fold seamlessly into the body to create a sculpture.Designer: Florian DobeSource: yankodesign.com

Pixel Perfect Hour Glass
2008-03-18 14:38:00 Most of us here in the United States (that are not of the Jurassic age demographic) have but one point of reference when it comes to sand filled hour glasses. For over 40 years, one of the longest running television shows in history opens with a slow camera zoom on an hour glass ticking away your daily wasted hour of mind numbing melodrama. The voice over is one of the most famous lines ever written for mass media; âLike sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.â Thatâs it! Aside from the occasional egg-timer sighting or Flintstones episode, society has moved way beyond need for one of the most ancient of technologies, the sand filled hour glass. Designer Pavel Balykin believes this very retro timepiece is on schedule for a comeback. Itâs fittingly called the âSand+Time Watchâ and has the distinct feature of a digital hour glass screen saver mode. Itâs a âscreen saverâ mode, because this particular feature does not actually count time for you. If y... More About: Glass , Perfect , Pixel , Hour , Hour Glass
Rocky Radio
2008-03-18 14:34:00 The Natural Radio concept is a bit convoluted in its approach changing volume and frequency. Instead of dials or buttons, it uses a scale. By placing stones on either sides of the scale, you have organic control over radio. Functionality isnât really the idea here. This is clearly an attempt to humanize a device that pretty much revolutionized communication. Can you image how many stones youâd have to pack on to get the right volume.Designer: Cheol-Ki JoSource: yankodesign.com More About: Rocky
This Thumb Drive Has Real BuzzâŠ
2008-03-18 14:30:00 One of the biggest issues with USB peripherals is the protruding nature of any design. From a Bluetooth adaptor to the tiniest of Flash Memory Drive s, they all stick out like a sore thumb(drive). This issue with these protrusions is not just aesthetics, but function. USB peripherals are constantly being accidentally ripped out, knocked off or jammed into your computer causing not only damage to the external item but the computerâs USB plug itself. Serbian designer Damjan Stankovic, believes that flexibility in design can solve this problem. His âUSBeeâ Flash Memory Drive won the first prize at the MS Industrial USB Competition held by the Serbian Design Community forum DizajnZonaâą. Ergonomically designed to bend at lifeâs will in any direction, this USB flash drive features a vented housing for cooling(I did not realize these needed cooling), and a detachable protective cap that snaps onto the back end of the device when not in use. No word yet if this will go into product... More About: Real , Thumb , Thumb Drive

Mariah & Snoop Dogg
2008-03-17 09:02:00 Say Somethin' - Mariah Carey featuring Snoop Dogg -"Say Somethin'" has been mentioned as a possibility for the next single from Mariah Carey's 6-million-selling The Emancipation of Mimi nearly every time a new single has been released. However, it has been held up for unknown reasons. One explanation that was tossed out was because Mariah Carey does not share production credits on the song like she does on most of her material. "Say Somethin'" is credited solely to the Neptunes as producers. Whatever the reason, it is here at last and it is an event. The song doesn't amount to much more than a midtempo seduction, but with the near perfect vocal match of Mariah Carey and rapper Snoop Dogg nothing more is needed. Carey was one of the first mainstream pop artists to openly express her love for hip hop and collaborate with hip hop artists. Now that these collaborations are the norm Mariah pulls together the Neptunes, arguably the top production team in the business, and Snoop Dogg, a...
Canvas by Kyle Cherry
2008-03-13 13:45:00 Designer Kyle Cherry has envisaged a new type of computer with creatives in mind. Called simply âCanvas â, the computer is designed to increase the quality and productivity of the designer or artist. It is intended to allow a user with little or no experience to make the switch from traditional to digital workflows by building the system around a more familiar interface. This concept should even make Wacom Clinq owners jealous.Designer: Kyle CherrySource: yankodesign.com
Backpack fridge with traveller dishes
2008-03-13 13:22:00 Food consumption and transportation can be very uncomfortable during a journey. âBoxcoolerâ a backpack fridge with picnic dishes, revalues the cooler and raises it to a modern standard. There are two ways to carry. On one side it can conveniently be carried on the back, so the userâs hands are relieved. On the other side, the cover hinge (which is hollow inside and has access from the back) can be used as a handle. Carabines on the shoulder cushions can be fixed at the headrests inside a car. They ensure an immovable position during the journey. Even in an accident, the product is fixed at the back of the seat and canât cause any danger.Thermoelectric Peltier elements replace the traditional âfreezer batteriesâ which defrost after a while. Therefore, the food inside stays fresh and cool for a longer time. They are supplied by a storage cell which can be reloaded inside the car or at home. Inside the pockets are compact tablets with all the equipment needed for a picnic. A... More About: Backpack , Fridge , Dishes , Traveller

Soft, Squeezable, Huggable Phone
2008-02-27 14:22:00 Imagine a phone made from cotton. Soft , pliable, and light yet never compromising on power or performance. The Soft Phone concept by designer Qian Jiang takes what we know about electronic cellulose structures and squeezes every last ounce of performance out of it, literally!Itâs a series of discs with electronic fabric stretched in between. The interface uses a combination of tactile gestures like squeezing to hang-up and touch which detects a deformation on the surface to register input. The fibers are fine enough and optically clear allowing light energy to pass thru to display simple contextual menus. Whenever you need a full QWERTY just unfurl the collapsible structure. The cell antenna, battery, camera, and micro electronics are contained inside a tiny clip which itself is made of soft, squeezable, stress-reducing silica. One thing this phone concept did do away with is a receiver because didnât you know people in the future only use hands-free wireless technologies? Pffft...
Your Spoon is DoomedâŠ
2008-02-27 14:20:00 Spoons are so last year. Who has time to find a clean one, lift your hand, swirl your wrist to mix in sugar with your tea or coffee, tap the spoon dry or lick it and then place it back on the plate? I mean really, are we animals!? No, most of us are not. So that is why Florian Dussopt, JĂ©rĂ©mie Reneau & Julie Girard got together and created the âCeramix For Mixâ saucer and cup design. All sarcasm aside, this is a elegant and simple design. Incorporating a molded glass groove (resembling a roulette wheel) that acts as a track for a ceramic ball as well as keep you from choking to death on it, the user is inclined to swirl the cup using centrifugal force to mix your beverage. I applaud the design and am still pondering its need over my premixed vanilla latte.Designer: Florian Dussopt, JĂ©rĂ©mie Reneau & Julie GirardSource: yankodesign.com More About: Spoon
Born to be Mild!
2008-02-27 14:16:00 Some green concepts make their environmental statements by incorporating sustainable materials or technology, others simply draw attention to the issue by their design. Then there is âThe Thunderboltâ Scooter Concept by Henrik Björkman. Though there is nothing groundbreaking about an electric scooter, my grandmother had one after all, there are a few interesting features behind The Thunderbolt Electric Scooter. The electro-magnetic power train is neatly housed in the rear wheel itself. Where one would normally find liquified dead dinosaurs, you can now store an alfalfa sandwich and herbal tea, where one might find a Earth unfriendly combustible engine, there is a huge gapping hole. This hole, or âanti-engine,â is a not-so-subtle protest against all combustible engines and does a pretty fair job of making us re-evaluate the way we look at modes of transportation and their form factors. With a range of about 70 kms on a three hour charge, you can easily âget your (non)motor...
Dinnertime just got ballsyâŠ
2008-02-27 14:14:00 Pool Table manufacturers are constantly having to find new ways to justify their huge expense and massive real-estate usage. They also need to compete for attention from the internet, Video On-Demand and social-centric video games like Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution and pretty much anything on Nintendoâs Wii. Given these massive challenges, the Billiard Industry has looked to innovative design to save their ever shrinking markets. This âFusionâ pool table/dining room table was created by Aramith, long-time leading manufacturer in the billiard industry, the Fusion dining table innovates by adding multi-functionality as it combines a dining table, a pool table and a game table all in one. Multi-purpose functionality just might save the industry from going the way of the Dodo, or until Microsoft decides to add a billiards game to its âSurfaceâ Table initiative.Product Page: FusionTablesSource: yankodesign.com
A Droplet of Light
2008-02-27 14:13:00 The Drop Lamp combines Murano mastery and engineering in a suspended lamp that looks like a droplet of water frozen in space. The natural characteristics of Murano means no two lamps are identical, that is until you accidentally drop them. Then they all look the same - a million pieces of broken glass or âtearsâ because you just know this lamp is a budget buster if it ever goes into production.Designer: ITlab Design Laboratory [ Manufacturer: Andromeda ]Source: yankodesign.com More About: Light , Droplet
Window To The World
2008-02-27 14:10:00 Some technology concepts just make sense the second you see them. This concept tablet ultra-connected device by Tokyo resident Mac Funamizu, has me wishing for tomorrow today. Though he has not named it as of yet, I will drink the potion and call it âThe Looking Glass.â The idea is simple, by incorporating a camera/scanner, GPS and internet connectivity, the world is literally at your finger tips. Just frame anything you desire behind the glass window, from a building, to a car or piece of art and the image will be analyzed and searched on any number of sites like wikipedia, google or google earth. Want to know about a word in a book or magazine? Simply frame it up and touch the word. Instant access to any number of learning aids eg. dictionary, thesaurus or reference databases will have you clued in in seconds.Check out how the designer uses it to identify a particular floor of a building by simply clicking on it. âiâ Meme + Lipstick = iStick
2008-02-27 14:08:00 Designer Alexei Mikhailov isnât out to convince people his iStick concept is the perfect mobile convergence device. In fact he clearly points out the iStick isnât for viewing movies and the screen is too small for effective photo viewing. What it does have is a visual replication of the iPhone/Touch space inside a device the size of a lipstick tube.Big square icons and of course Coverflow let you navigate the Mac way. Whatâs interesting is his surface design. All four surfaces are touchscreens which could present some interesting and unique interface design. The integrated WIFI also enables you to browse iTunes. Itâs not an iPod replacement per say. Think of it more as a big brother to the iPod Shuffle.Designer: Alexei MikhailovSource: yankodesign.con More About: Meme , Lipstick
