Over the weekend, the Barbados Arts Council's Pelican Art Gallery was scene to a doubly poignant scene - it was tableau to the launch of "Anatomy Of A Scream," a collection of poems tracking Lyric, a rape victim from the age of ten into adulthood; and it was also rather poignant in the sense that such a powerful catharsis was only witnessed by about 35 people - it speaks to the striking need of not just LITERACY on the Bajan mindscape, but an appreciation for the aesthetic also.It is a pleasure to realise that CO Williams Electrical recognises its corporate citizenry via the Arts in sponsoring a portion of the publication expenses for Anatomy Of A Scream. The proceedings were hosted by Esther Phillips, with readings from Linda Deane, Jean Butcher-Lashley (the Head of the English Dept at BCC) and Ms Phillips - "Anatomy Of A Scream" can be found on sale at Days' Book Store at Independence Square; all branches of the Cloister Bookstore; at the bookstores of both the UWI and the B'dos...

Media creates hullaballoo over Rihanna's concert goodies - some are safety
2008-03-09 13:27:00
In my years of dabbling on the outskirts of entertainment, there are things I know for a fact and others which are ALLEGED...When Dionne Warwick was here for the Jazz Festival a few years ago, she insisted that an ashtray was in every room at Grand Barbados in the suite that she occupied, or else? No performing at all!I have heard of rock singers who DEMAND for green M&M's to be removed from a gallon-bowl of that candy or no singing that night, now there are claims in the Far East that Rihanna is insisting on weird stipulations for her digestive pleasures -If sources are to be believed, as a part of her world tour contract, the 20-year-old singer demands that each venue has to provide her with two packs of pink bubblegum, two apples, two mangos, two pears, seedless grapes and strawberries. The Umbrella hitmaker also asks for two knives (to cut the fruit), a teapot and 24 warm Buffalo wings, fried chicken and spiced white rice, reports the New York Post.Um, she is a bony gal, so...

The event was well attended and even attracted a large throng of tourists from Asia, Europe and America. The Bashment Squad was the first sound to take the stage as patrons were streaming in droves allaying fears by some that the early morning showers might put a damper on the event. Magnum Follow Di Arrow on Saturday March 1, 2008, went off without a hitch and patrons indeed received their monies worth.Magnum Tonic wine has for the last nine years sought to bring quality dancehall entertainment of the highest standard to Jamaica. It was not so long ago when we told you we'd check a few polo matches for ourselves and see what the difference is - we have and there are VAST chasms, lemme tell ya!I realise both Waterhall and Diamonds International have been advertising polo on the radio, after my infamous article appeared, but Waterhall has just revised its website a lot, with much of it still incomplete - while Lion Castle and the Barbados Polo Club's sites just occupy cyberspace... They need wallpapers, screensavers and maybe free song downloads, folks, if you really wanna survive competition! Look at Waterhall, they have actually used tv ads and gone youtube!Looking at the ad, it definitely has its humour niche - however, since when has polo been a working-class sport? Even if you check the classic movie, Pretty Woman, set in the good ol' US of A, it is an elite event. However, Waterhall is trying to get everyone to attend, it seems they're in a cold war with the B'dos Polo Club, they want their own agen...

It was a pleasure to fly home and work with these fellas, as I've known them since I first started doing music, back when I was 15 or so. I've grown a lot as a musician since then, and I can't even call what I do "hip-hop" anymore, but this track was a chance to revisit the good old days.Back then, we were some of the only MC's in Barbados, and I remember spending quite a few Saturday mornings in front of DaCosta's Mall, begging people to sign petitions to get local hip-hop on the radio. It was quite a feat to get the radio stations to pay attention to us back then lemme tell ya, but look at how things have changed...Anyhow, plea...

2008-03-04 01:28:00
Cultural dancers in St. Kitts spent some time recently learning techniques of a more modern dance in a tale of old school meets new style. The Victoria Road Community Center was the venue for a hip-hop workshop which drew young dancers of the hip-hop genre but also appealed to more seasoned performers from traditional dance groups including Vivace, Okolo Tegremantine as well as Christian groups Hebrew Brothers and Divine Praise. The workshop was organized by the Alliance Française in collaboration with the Department of Culture and facilitated by choreographer David Milome of Martinique. He was supported by team members Marie-Aude Ichane and Jean-Michel Garraud. Dance Specialist in the Department of Culture Lorna ‘Ava’ Henry coordinated the one-day session.
