MARK KENNY: BRINGING AUTHENTIC JAMAICAN TALENT TO THE MASSES
2008-03-29 14:06:00 The phenomena of Rising Stars and Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall have created a level of enthusiasm and an anticipation rarely seen in the history of television talent shows in Jamaica. Many do not know who the brainchild of these two massively popular shows is and even more interestingly, that he is not a native Jamaican . Born in Dublin Ireland, Mark Kenny has been an ardent fan of Jamaican music and culture since the 1970s. The professionally trained pianist became a convert to reggae after listening to the group 'Culture' who are credited with influencing the development of Punk Rock music in the 1970s. Kenny has developed a sophisticated appreciation of Jamaica's music and culture which is manifested in his work with Digicel Rising Stars and Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall. Kenny began his television career in 1990 as a producer with Animedia, one of Ireland's largest animation companies at the time. He excelled and went on to produce one of Irelan... More About: Talent

T'dad set for some hot wickets in their tail - As Windies take on Colombo,
2008-03-29 12:59:00 After virtually securing all the records at the Guyana National Stadium during the First Digicel Test match when the stadium became the 97th Test venue in the world, Sri Lanka now moves to take on West Indies in the Second and Final Digicel Test at the Queen’s Park Oval in neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago. The two teams have never played a Test match against each other in Trinidad so numerous records are up for grabs. The five Test matches Sri Lanka played in the Caribbean were in Guyana, Antigua, St Vincent, St Lucia and Jamaica. Their victory in the First Digicel Test at the Guyana National Stadium was their first Test win in this part of the world. Malinda Warnapura and captain Mahela Jayawardene who both scored centuries in Guyana were the second and third Sri Lankan batsmen to score triple figures in the West Indies following Marvan Atapattu's 118 in St Lucia in 2003. And Warnapura is the second Sri Lankan batsman, again following Atapattu, to score a century and a half ... More About: Colombo , Tail
Traffic Safety: No Act of Fate - Accidents take lives of hundreds - many in
2008-03-29 11:20:00 Crop Over is soon here, and I was looking at PAHO's newsletter about vehicular mishaps and although it referred to the Caribbean, the closest they got was by Costa Rica, the story primarily dealt with South American territories and the horrors they cause long after the wreckage is hauled away!Yet I could not help but recall the bus and van tragedies that surrounded Kadooment and Emancipation last year, I am sure there were other terrible accidents in the rest of the region, but naturally the Bajan events are the ones we're very familiar with, so for a few moments I am going to look at both last year and see how it melds with what PAHO is worried about -In October 2006, a group of high school students from Buenos Aires were returning from a field trip to a rural school, where they had met and shared experiences with students from very different, less privileged backgrounds. On a highway in the province of Santa Fé, a truck collided head-on with their van. Nine of the students,... More About: Safety , Traffic , Accidents , Fate , Lives
FUEL SURCHARGE CONTROL TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN SKN: RETROACTIVE FROM START OF
2008-03-12 13:23:00 The Kittitian Government is regulating the fuel surcharge paid on electricity bills, retroactive from January 2008. The announcement made by the SKN's Minister of Finance, and Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil L. Douglas in his Budget Address, stated that the fuel surcharge of householders can no longer be more than 50% of the current (primary) charge. This policy change was in direct response to consumers’ requests that there be controls placed on the surcharge. The necessary software to ensure a smooth transition has been acquired, installed, and is being test run. Even if there are slight delays in the mailing of any bills as a result of the new system, all customers will still have their surcharge controlled effective January 15 th, which reflects the start date of the 2008 billing cycle. Both the Technology and Electricity Departments have teamed up to make certain that the new system is fully implemented. The new control on the fuel surcharge is in additi... The group made a West Coast mini-tour recently hitting the 27th Annual Ragga Muffins Festival at the Long Beach Arena where the met up with several DJ's and VJ's for interviews at the festival press conference. The fan response was notable and they were able to get a chance to meet and greet at a booth in the arena hosted by the Jamaican Tourist Board. In advance of the festival, the group has had some early believers on the West Coast including Indie 103.1 FM's Native Wayne Jobson who had this to say: "One of the best bands to come out of Jamaica in 10 years, they weld molten reggae into new shapes by soldering in some lava rock. 'Victims of the System' is as dangerous as it comes." The band spoke live on-air with Native Wayne by phone from Kingston, as well as with DJ Big Jim at KUCI-UC-I... COMMONWEALTH DAY 2008: MESSAGE FROM 1st NON-ELECTED PRIME MINISTER OF THE
2008-03-12 11:38:00 This year’s Commonwealth Day theme is “The Environment Our Future” – it could not be more relevant – we all have to take urgent action today to guarantee tomorrow’s future. Commonwealth States share the same dilemma. We need to find a way to grow and develop our economies without destabilising the climate, and destroying the foundations that underpin our growth, stability and development. The only way out is, together, to build a low carbon global economy as soon as we can.I look forward to working further with my fellow Commonwealth Heads of Government over the coming months to help deliver our Action Plan and achieve these goals. In particular, I want to continue to develop a shared understanding of what climate change will mean for our economies and societies; to draw on Commonwealth networks, so that we can explore the economic, social, and health opportunities, particularly for developing countries, of a transition to low carbon...The Commonwealth brings together ... 2008-03-11 04:00:00 There is a lot happening in terms of new articles between now and Sunday, I'm currently doing a LOT of research for many of the following items - more than I used to do at CBC, too! Plus a heavy day-job workload, Oy!Folks are just DYING to know what I thought of Clifton too - not only was I surprised, also narrowly escaped the mother of all hangovers and I learned a lot about the sport from many key umpires and players in that sport. I have been examining other polo websites overseas to verify, and the results are stunning! There are other avenues where local polo can accelerate their market growth without breaking their advertising budget, by setting a great example - see the photo? Where did that happen? Keep watching this space!Meanwhile - do you realise how many folks are now USED-TO-BE rappers? In fact, some kids these days may get shocked to learn some folk started out doing word rhymes about street-life... A lengthy feature is in the works...A popular gaming and munching esta... Barbadian Poet launches series of verse relating a child's rape as way forw
2008-03-09 15:51:00 Over the weekend, the Barbados Arts Council's Pelican Art Gallery was scene to a doubly poignant scene - it was tableau to the launch of "Anatomy Of A Scream," a collection of poems tracking Lyric, a rape victim from the age of ten into adulthood; and it was also rather poignant in the sense that such a powerful catharsis was only witnessed by about 35 people - it speaks to the striking need of not just LITERACY on the Bajan mindscape, but an appreciation for the aesthetic also.It is a pleasure to realise that CO Williams Electrical recognises its corporate citizenry via the Arts in sponsoring a portion of the publication expenses for Anatomy Of A Scream. The proceedings were hosted by Esther Phillips, with readings from Linda Deane, Jean Butcher-Lashley (the Head of the English Dept at BCC) and Ms Phillips - "Anatomy Of A Scream" can be found on sale at Days' Book Store at Independence Square; all branches of the Cloister Bookstore; at the bookstores of both the UWI and the B'dos... 2008-03-09 13:27:00 In my years of dabbling on the outskirts of entertainment, there are things I know for a fact and others which are ALLEGED...When Dionne Warwick was here for the Jazz Festival a few years ago, she insisted that an ashtray was in every room at Grand Barbados in the suite that she occupied, or else? No performing at all!I have heard of rock singers who DEMAND for green M&M's to be removed from a gallon-bowl of that candy or no singing that night, now there are claims in the Far East that Rihanna is insisting on weird stipulations for her digestive pleasures -If sources are to be believed, as a part of her world tour contract, the 20-year-old singer demands that each venue has to provide her with two packs of pink bubblegum, two apples, two mangos, two pears, seedless grapes and strawberries. The Umbrella hitmaker also asks for two knives (to cut the fruit), a teapot and 24 warm Buffalo wings, fried chicken and spiced white rice, reports the New York Post.Um, she is a bony gal, so...
