It was not so long ago when we told you we'd check a few polo matches for ourselves and see what the difference is - we have and there are VAST chasms, lemme tell ya!I realise both Waterhall and Diamonds International have been advertising polo on the radio, after my infamous article appeared, but Waterhall has just revised its website a lot, with much of it still incomplete - while Lion Castle and the Barbados Polo Club's sites just occupy cyberspace... They need wallpapers, screensavers and maybe free song downloads, folks, if you really wanna survive competition! Look at Waterhall, they have actually used tv ads and gone youtube!Looking at the ad, it definitely has its humour niche - however, since when has polo been a working-class sport? Even if you check the classic movie, Pretty Woman, set in the good ol' US of A, it is an elite event. However, Waterhall is trying to get everyone to attend, it seems they're in a cold war with the B'dos Polo Club, they want their own agen...

2008-03-04 01:59:00
What has happened to the Bajan frog out to save the Universe armed only with a measly sword (collins)? I e-mailed him and here is what he had to say -Greetings fine people, I hope this e-mail finds you well,Just giving you a heads up on the release of my new "Barbados-only" single and video, "The Way I Move (WEmix)" featuring Trezay and Billy Kincaid. It was a pleasure to fly home and work with these fellas, as I've known them since I first started doing music, back when I was 15 or so. I've grown a lot as a musician since then, and I can't even call what I do "hip-hop" anymore, but this track was a chance to revisit the good old days.Back then, we were some of the only MC's in Barbados, and I remember spending quite a few Saturday mornings in front of DaCosta's Mall, begging people to sign petitions to get local hip-hop on the radio. It was quite a feat to get the radio stations to pay attention to us back then lemme tell ya, but look at how things have changed...Anyhow, plea...

OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW STYLE AT SKN DANCE WORKSHOP
2008-03-04 01:28:00
Cultural dancers in St. Kitts spent some time recently learning techniques of a more modern dance in a tale of old school meets new style. The Victoria Road Community Center was the venue for a hip-hop workshop which drew young dancers of the hip-hop genre but also appealed to more seasoned performers from traditional dance groups including Vivace, Okolo Tegremantine as well as Christian groups Hebrew Brothers and Divine Praise. The workshop was organized by the Alliance Française in collaboration with the Department of Culture and facilitated by choreographer David Milome of Martinique. He was supported by team members Marie-Aude Ichane and Jean-Michel Garraud. Dance Specialist in the Department of Culture Lorna ‘Ava’ Henry coordinated the one-day session. She told SKNIS that dance much like music, has cross linkages and some of the techniques associated with hip-hop mirrors traditional dance. Ms. Henry explained that participants enhanced their overall knowledge of dance and le...

Ancestral Echoes create a Spiritual Bond: Heru off the chain while remainin
2008-03-01 22:44:00
Close to MacGregor Street in Bridgetown, an old red-bricked building rests close by - this particular night in question its name is probably at its most apt, The Spirit Bond , and orishas were indeed invoked to give and receive tribute as ancestors to poets who lay down psychokinetic battles against racism and evil forces in a manner similar to a Jedi Knight wielding a lightsaber! There was a traditional presentation of issuing the Libation, and an adorable little dreadlocked toddler orating a pledge against those that would uphold advancement based on pigmentation.Oswald Jones drew the audience's attention to him like how a lightbulb draws fireflies in the deep of the night, he regaled the folk with his Bronze winner from NIFCA 2007 "The Same Slave Ship," where he does not paint a pretty picture for Caricom, he refers to the CSME as - Caribbean Society, Memory (is) Erased!Kimberley Boyce alias Kimani Mocha Jade still sought love and energy from the crowd and gained some with her new...

Barbadian Media ignore concerns of its people with Housing Needs - WEST COA

I was driving home from work and listening to Mix FM, heard Emmanuel Joseph with their news (It was late again - 5:26 pm, 2nd day in a row, too!) and was gushing about 250 jobs for Bajans at a piece of real estate outside of Holetown...My immediate reaction was - how come this is not a series of starter units for first-jobbed or just-have-family Bajans? You expect that certain agencies will have a perspective to promote but allegedly the Advocate, Nation, CBC and the rest have their own testicles? Here is the pablum served up for all Barbados to gobble without, salt/pepper/hotsauce/mayonnaise/curry/ket chup/mustard/sugar, NB: This item is edited for length of content -Barbados’ reputation as a shopping destination is expected to be greatly enhanced as a result of the country’s first Mixed Used Lifestyle Centre – Limegrove Lifestyle Centre...Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, George Hutson, at the official groundbreaking for the Centre at Holetown, St. James [says] the ant...

Quite a paradox defying the freedom of being an artist. Maturity in my personal and painting life eventually gave me the confidence of my artistic expression. A very accomplished and veneered fellow artist from Grenada, Susan Mains, said to me once“I am proud of being a self taught artist. It just means that I read a lot, and worked very hard. “ As a matter of fact, I do paint just about everyday, several hours a day. I do have a studio, in my home that many times, in a slip of the tongue; I refer to as m...

For all of the political agenda B'dos Free Press may fling here and there every now and again, they do have some intriguing stories of true newsworthy attention, but then again, some areas within the mainstream media are under direct orders not to acknowledge this side of the world, no matter how juicy the story - here are some good BFP examples that are not touched completely yet...The items about implying a racket is on for foreigners who relax here only to find a ransacked home when they return or the spin on the latest tourist crimes which both the Tourism Authority and the Hotel and Tourism Association want downplayed?Rather than downplay it, perhaps they should hold off until the perps are caught and then highlight the fact the idiots are in Dodds avoiding to drop bars of soap, since it's usually the business community, friends and family of the RBPF or visitors who are most likely to get swift yet mostly accurate justice. Why am I talking all of this? Because from last year ...

2007's days are numbered (our 1st anniversary looms, yikes) and some of us are yet to spend our last shekel to get a gift celebrating the birth of one of God's Messengers (Here you thought Christmas was all about guys in red and white and snow even in tropics?)...Well, for those who wish to stay Bajan and reasonable - you have two choices! A spoken-word disk or an anthology. For those into audio, try "Random Acts of Conscience" from adrian green -aka- Amenyama, this 15-track album features many popular verses from this modern-day Aesop turned Orpheus... "DJ's and artists" (where local culture's subversion is lamented) or "Politicians" (which links Alexander, Julius Caesar, Napoleon with Hitler, Bush Sr & Bush Jr). The album also features Ikon as well as Mwihaki Itrina.Unfortunately, you won't find Rebel Diva nor Ancestors on this compilation! I am not sure where you would find a copy of the album, but I do know that you can e-mail Adrian "Amenyama" Green and arrange to get ...

Already a number of prominent Grenadian companies have booked their Corporate Christmas celebrations at Savvy's restaurant. One of the unique points of Mount Cinnamon is that every one of the 45 staff of the resort is Grenadian including Manager Chris Ghita. Unlike many other restaurants which hire foreign chefs, Savvy's entire kitchen team is Grenadian. The management of Savvy's took a conscious decision to train local talented chefs. Some of the best executive Chefs from Italy and France came to Grenada to conduct this training. Our local team is now running the...
