Memories of Yesteryear - Flamboyant Restaurant and Video King as bad off as
2007-12-07 02:42:00
When VHS was God, I would check out Video King all the time and they were diagonally opposite the Seaview Hotel (Savannah Resort) where once I had their idea of surf & turf - lobster & fillet mignon, at a then astronomical 75 dollars a plate (it was my birthday, I think). I also had a disastrous Old Year's at DaLuciano's Ristorante Italiano when I used to work reception at a Tour Company...But I never went to Unicorn One Disco, Alexandra's Discotheque nor the Flamboyant Restaurant - but I heard of them when I was much younger and assumed they'd be there for me to visit when I get older...Yeah, right! Quoting Shelley is very appropriate now...I MET a Traveler from an antique land, Who said, "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desart. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read, Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,The han...

WHAT SHOULD BARBADIANS DO IF THERE IS AN AFTERSHOCK? CHECK SNOPES 1st
2007-12-07 01:49:00
Barbadians probably never thought we'd be reading up on earthquakes, but perhaps it is something we should know but verify it with myth-busters Snopes -dot-Com; especially as there is a particular e-mail now making the rounds... EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON THE "TRIANGLE OF LIFE", Edited by Larry Linn for MAA Safety Committee brief on 4/13/04.My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI), the world's most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake. The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under their desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene, unnecessary and I wondered why the children were not in the aisles. I didn't at the time know that the children were told to hide under so...

St Kitts touts Continued Success of Sports Tourism
2007-12-07 01:00:00
The year 2007 will go down in history as the most successful for sports tourism in St. Kitts and Nevis with a total of 1,797 athletes from 31 groups and a number of officials visiting the twin-island Federation. With the CARIFTA Games slated for next March and two One-Day Internationals between the Australian and West Indies cricket teams in July, government is continuing to work hard to match and possibly surpass the 2007 figures. Minister of State responsible for Tourism , Sports and Culture the Hon. Richard Skerritt told SKNIS that the quality of the sporting facilities coupled with the beauty of the destination and the highly rated accommodations is a formula that is yielding successful results. “It’s good news because it is one of the things that this government has been striving to do [by] building a sports tourism infrastructure and getting into the market in a serious way,” he said. “The results are coming. The CARIFTA Games is another perfect activ...

Private Beach on Barbadian West Coast? According to online edition of Count
2007-12-06 12:09:00
Gabby wrote a song about the possibility of limiting access to beaches that was a hit back in 1982 and the refrain was "Dah beach is mine, Ah could bathe anytime!" Huh, that was then and this is NOW, buddy! You visit the Brit website, Country Life? Milord and Colina Del Mar, in Fitts Village near St James, are both in a very desirable area just 3 miles from Holetown and its restaurants and shops, but their most appealing characteristic is its private beachfront access. Space on the beach in this area in Barbados comes at a premium, and this property is certainly set to be popular with those looking for a holiday home, or a primary residence in the Caribbean. I understand why many UK folk want to come here, but I could have sworn Barbadian beaches are public, then again that is just me - I don't know. Somewhere along the way, I think, both Jack and Gabby must be in a rumshop with the Biblical Esau, comparing messes of pottage - is this right? What can be done?

You might have seen some of his other expeditions on the Discovery Channel or BBC.A fairly new blog about the Centre for Fortean Zoology expedition hailed the efforts of eco-warrior Damon Corrie and has turned up some amazing information and strange creatures never before heard of in the west. The team interviewed witnesses to a strange race of undiscovered mountain dwelling pygmies, These tiny red faced men appear to inhabit caves and have been seen in both north and south Guyana. At 3.5 feet tall the pygmies may be related to Homo floresensis discovered a couple of years ago in Indonesia. They also heard tell of the Di-Di (pronounced 'Die-Die') a yeti like hairy giant 8-10 feet tall.As recently as t...

West Indies Cricket To Benefit From Cancellation Of Super Star Match
2007-12-05 05:46:00
The West Indies Cricket Board stands to benefit significantly with the cancellation of the Stanford Super Star s match which was slated for June 2008. India, winners of the ICC World Twenty20 Championship, through the Board of Control for Cricket in India indicated that they would be unable to accept the invitation for the US$5million match at the Stanford Cricket Ground in Antigua and as a result, Sir Allen Stanford along with his 14 legends of West Indies cricket have decided that the money would best be spent in grassroots cricket in the West Indies. “I am obviously disappointed that the invitation for the Super Star match was not accepted but this has caused us to redouble our efforts in ensuring that grassroots cricket benefits in addition to the monies which we have already ploughed into cricket development across the region since 2005,” Sir Allen stated. In September, Stanford 20/20 had extended an invitation to the winner of the ICC World Twenty20 Championship to...

CARICOM-U.S. Initiative to Combat Illicit Trafficking In Small Arms and Lig
2007-12-05 05:28:00
The United States and CARICOM Member States have pledged to enhance regional cooperation to prevent, combat, and eradicate the illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons in the region.Illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons poses a serious threat to the security of the Western Hemisphere because this thriving black market provides weapons to terrorist groups, drug traffickers, gangs, and other criminal organizations. The US-Caricom Partnership outlined concrete and practical measures they will undertake to address illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons throughout the region. The initiative is a follow-on to the agreement between the CARICOM Foreign Ministers and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on March 22, 2006, which called for cooperation to combat illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons. This commitment was reaffirmed during the US-CARICOM Heads of Government Summit during the June 2007 Conference on the Caribbean in Washington...

Ce'Cile would like to advise all her loyal fans and well-wishers that due to the cancellation of 'Nigeria Alive' she was not able to travel to Abuja, Nigeria on December 1, 2007. "I was really looking forward to performing in Africa for the 1st time and was disappointed to find out that the event would not take place as planned." The aim of 'Nigeria Alive', which was scheduled for December 1, 2007 at the Abuja National Stadium in Nigeria, was to awaken the talents in Nigerian young people and raise morale and self-esteem in the under-privileged youths whose hopes have been dashed by the awareness that they are HIV/AIDS carriers. 9Ja Sounds Entertainment, the promoters of the show, are yet to release a new date.

His activity starts there, displaying at once an astounding skill in moulding materials, transforming them with wit and panache and creating sculptures with perfection of detail, spontaneity and essence. During his artistic evolution he worked first in marble, then bronze, and eventually in wood. However wood has always been his favourite material because it affords hi...

Dennis DePeiza compiled "Issues and Responses" a number of essays, speeches and newspaper items from the 90's to the very recent present; it took close to seven years to get off the ground.Along the way, Dennis had much support from different quarters - among them, there was Grace Husbands from Gold Dust Multi-Media Services who guided the publishing details and Coles Printery who actually got the book from theory to practice!Orlando "Gabby" Scott of the BWU was the emcee that night at the Savannah Hotel in Hastings, and kept it cool when an idiot latecomer knocked down CBC's camera light which in turn hit a poor member of the audience on his head, that man should be more careful!Patrick Frost, the former head of the Barbados Secondary Teachers Union , sees DePeiza's book as a legacy to his pride in education; in that Dennis wanted to make sure that youth continue to learn from what he was taught.Mr Frost also saw DePeiza's trade unionism shining through in the pages by showing t...

What does a Russian princess and Barbados' Boomtribe have in common? Daana!

She won the Jahbulani Ballroom's Annette Byer Solo and the advance open... Daana's younger brother Warren works with the renowned photographer Carl Blenman at Studio Studio and she says it was him who challenged her into taking up dance - it came after they saw Anastasia, about the doomed Romanov princess pursued by the spectre of Rasputin set in musical form.Warren said she could do it and she doubted but after his persistent pushing, she tried it out and has kept training for the last eight years! She eventually joined the ...

2007-04-01 05:40:00
Now I may be wrong like how Smokey Burke usually is, but I think one of the main turn-offs for this CWC has been that West Indians cannot make noise like how they usually do during a match - no conch shells nor drums and trumpets!Dehring & Co are refuting claims this is partially why matches are not full to the brim with spectators, apart from the astronomical fees for tickets and how foreigners bought a bunch of tix just to get the Super 8 Final and skipped the rest - they're also denying that there was no danger in Antigua and yet at the same time citing the very danger they're ignoring...In light of recent press reports and interviews, which have surfaced in the media – namely The Nation newspaper of Barbados, regarding the temporary closure of the east stand on Wednesday, March 28, 2007. World Cup Antigua Inc., Local Organising Committee for ICC CWC 2007 issues the following statement: On Tuesday, March 27 a significant amount of rain fell and the match was ...

Once More Unto The Breach: Earthrace continues its goal to reach Barbados!
2007-03-30 00:56:00
The Guatemalan court has ruled in favour of Pete Bethune to be freed of charges related to the sad accident earlier this month. The Judge however ruled that the event was in fact an accident, and that no charges should be laid. Earth race has continually maintained that two major contributors to the accident were that the fishing vessel had no white light, and its crew was asleep at the time of the accident. Immediately preceding the court appearance, Earthrace crew met with the fishermen and their families, and Bethune says it was an extremely emotional experience for all involved... Earthrace -- is en-route to Acapulco, Mexico. Damage sustained in the accident will be repaired in Mexico, then the team will continue with their objective of setting a new world record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe.Incredibly enough, Bethune says they will continue to plough onwards for the goal to reach Barbados ?Mr Bethune was tonight crossing the Gulf of Tehuantepec at 40kph, headed for...
