Shameless Plug: Anansi Stories Pun De Grill on 7th April
2007-03-31 21:35:00
If you're looking to do something on Easter Saturday and cannot abide by avoiding your carnivorous habit for Lent any further, then you need to get Pun De Grill, no not actually on a BBQ, just get some meat and enjoy the performance of a guy called AnansiBear with them, their website is still under construction, but they have basic info out there for everyone - their number; the fact they're located on St Lawrence Gap; and they got a chef called Hassan Gibson to heat the barbie! Plus a young fellow will be performing who goes by the name of one of the most famous tricksters in the Caribbean... Who? No not that politician, I mean Anansi at Pun De Grill next Saturday!

2007-03-31 14:20:00
Now when the backhoe and open-backed truck trundle and grind their way towards my utility pole this Saturday, my cats are fighting between themselves and I learn early this morning that my neighbours across the once-empty lot (now the proposed site for Emmerton relocatees - last is my invented word) not only are their cats terrified for the construction/destruction, Mr Small's wife wants to sell their home and go back to the USA!That's the typical inverted pyramid capsule for a genuine News item, all the juicy meat up front then go over other details that can be dropped if pressed for time, total opposite of telling a story where you build a crescendo then WHAMMO - hit the reader or listener with the punchline! This new soundbite method of conveying data is probably part of the reason nearly everyone has attention deficit disorder syndrome!Anyway, as those who follow this News-Blog will recall, I have been trying since last year to campaign against the disruption to my residence o...

Jamaican Rednecks -Vs- Barbadian Conservative Liberality: Getting to the bo
2007-03-30 01:59:00
Got this item in my Hotmail account the other day, it made me think, my opinion expressed may get me branded as a batty-boy but if you can get past the simplicity of the argument you may understand what I am trying to draw reference with? This is an item taken from a Jamaica n online daily, it is the 21st Century and we have a bunch of heterosexual Jamaicans behaving like the old days of the south when rednecks would hang their USA cousins by the dozens - not for who they screw, but what skin they were born with! It seems to me the lynching is for very similar reason, exaggerated fear over small or superficial differences...It is also intriguing to see how it travels across cyberspace - this story broke actually on February 12th made the Observer on the 15th of that month but did not reach Barbados until the start of March! My thanks to Tracie, she sent more photos than what the article had, and here is what the Observer had to say -THREE men branded as homosexuals were yesterday rescu...

Once More Unto The Breach: Earthrace continues its goal to reach Barbados!
2007-03-30 00:56:00
The Guatemalan court has ruled in favour of Pete Bethune to be freed of charges related to the sad accident earlier this month. The Judge however ruled that the event was in fact an accident, and that no charges should be laid. Earth race has continually maintained that two major contributors to the accident were that the fishing vessel had no white light, and its crew was asleep at the time of the accident. Immediately preceding the court appearance, Earthrace crew met with the fishermen and their families, and Bethune says it was an extremely emotional experience for all involved... Earthrace -- is en-route to Acapulco, Mexico. Damage sustained in the accident will be repaired in Mexico, then the team will continue with their objective of setting a new world record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe.Incredibly enough, Bethune says they will continue to plough onwards for the goal to reach Barbados ?Mr Bethune was tonight crossing the Gulf of Tehuantepec at 40kph, headed for...

2007-03-29 23:06:00
For those of you who either thrilled to Richard Gere, Antonio Banderas or the Australian flick "Strictly Ballroom" or even adored old Fred & Ginger - then you missed a great show at the Wildey Gymnasium over the weekend...It was the 11th anniversary of the Jahbulani Ballroom Club, and there were quite a few Categories - Juveniles Novice; Juniors Novice; Juveniles Beginners; Junior Beginners; Youth Beginners; Adult Beginners; Advance Open; Salsa; Adult Inter mediate; Pro-Am (Professional/Amateurs) and the Annette Byer Memorial Solo. There were three judges from overseas to provide their technique to assessing the prowess of all of the contestants. Sarwat Kaluby, Rosendo Fumero and Dan Messenger. The solo is really the piece de resistance of the event; it is a tribute to Annette Byer whose deeds led to the founding of the club back in 1996. There was also a surprise demo from the Universal Kempo Karate Club. The show was great - so let me get out of the way the few bugs I observed...The ...

Clarification on Various Aspects of Barbadian Entertainment
2007-03-28 19:37:00
In the interests of clarity, and having no wish to draw bread from the mouths of any entrepreneurs, Bajan Reporter wishes to make the following items perfectly clear -Krosfyah is proud to be associated with Cable & Wireless (B'dos) Ltd in its subsidiaries of Caribsurf and bMobile ... nevertheless Krosfyah are free agents in the rest of this region if called to perform and lend their services to other islands of the Caribbean for concerts, etc.Miss Teen Universal and Sparkles International are currently in a partnership for July this year, but are in no way associated with Perfect Pageant ProductionsBajan Reporter nevertheless reserves the right... while respecting all applicable laws... to record, report, observe and comment (with or without humour) on whatever it encounters - be it in person or on the Internet, if a legitimate counter-idea can be submitted and is proven thoroughly? More Caribbean Telecom News - Court forces TSTT to answer the call for Digi
2007-03-27 12:15:00
Bajan Reporter has not heard from Anthony Gunn since late January, now he's back and not with tourism news - but telecommunications info, it seems interconnectivity issues in Hummingbird-Ville are finally being more open, but it literally took for the law to be handed down! According to Gunn, this is what the Trinidad Express had to say -STATE-OWNED telecoms provider Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) suffered a second defeat yesterday in court as it was ordered again to supply its rival mobile competitor, Digicel, with sufficient circuits to ensure inter- connection between the two networks. Digicel has requested some 437 additional circuits but TSTT complains that it cannot accede to the request since to do so could result in the collapse of all circuits and an estimated annual loss of $198 million. Legal sources say it is now open for Digicel to file contempt proceedings against TSTT executives for failing to comply with the court orders, or TS...

London Bourne is falling down: The Invasion of Strathclyde, Pt 3
2007-03-26 00:38:00
It is a good thing from my News days I learned how to shuttle off noise - you had no choice when the newsroom is typing + shouting + ringing + etc at each other while you try to finish YOUR story for the deadline... Since when I was composing yesterday's articles I used that ability to plough on through as I could barely concentrate for the shrieking of the steamroller crushing the marl into what the bulldozer had dug before - the road for the new Barbarees settlement for Emmerton folk. Then I learned CO Williams was involved as I saw a bobcat only this morning sloughing the excess marl into the belly of an open-backed COW truck, in a way, I suppose this can be construed as a benefit as I know where most of my cats are during the day now, they're cowering in my house from construction equipment raping their former turf at the whim of a voting gimmick foisted without consent on not only my neighbourhood but ME, as I am right next door to it!In case you are not aware, there is a stro...

2007-03-25 23:56:00
Ever look at Bim's "Is there anybody out there?" very good reading... She has two gems; one looks at the hypocrisy of Barbadians with sex and religion in "Of Jesus, Eunuchs and the Trojan Horse" -...madame sex candy connoiseur was sitting in front of her computer assuming my friend wanted to size up her internet porn. But alas, Theresa Twat had her Christian minded attention focused on some hot and steamy gospel videos. I had this sinking feeling that we should run but the legs wouldn't move. With our shutdefuckup purchase of Irish Cream Liquid Heat we got a complimentary critique on our shabbyness as wives and mothers. She also lashes at ppl who can watch victimisation and do nothing in the same entry -On my way home today I was held up in a eunuch motorcade. Young men, no longer in school yet still without a thing to do but wait for the final bell to ring, joined forces of about 6 to 1 and entertained the Pine intersection by cuffing and kicking the shit out of boy solo. Barbados and Caribbean get lashes for CWC 2007 - aka - Don't Quote Me!
2007-03-25 21:29:00
There are different perspectives but similar conclusions coming from Scottish and New Zealand bloggers on not only the CWC 2007, but the way forward for not only sports and cricket in the Caribbean but Barbadian challenges too - in a nutshell? More Bajan roadsigns, fix the roads here and stop giving ppl time off to play cricket and develop that and other sports as a full time occupation, the same way they do in the USA and Britain!Alastair Scott from ye olde Glasgow says the roads are atrocious, winks at cops being frisked and sees the future of local cricket not so shiny -BARBADOS names roundabouts after its famous cricketers. The trouble is, there just aren't enough of them - roundabouts, that is.The best way to tour the island is to hire a Mini-Moke, although, alas, these are getting scarcer as spares from Australia begin to dwindle. The roads vary from good to shocking, with the latter more common - even at slow speeds, you'll spend much of the time airborne. And lost. Signs a...

2007-03-25 17:29:00
When last you may have heard about Earth race - the biodiesel powerboat from New Zealand - is that they were looking at doing it over next year, after the Guatemalan tragedy with the illegal fishing crew... There are now some new developments - The captain of the New Zealand biofuelled vessel, Earthrace, has reached a settlement with the family of a fisherman killed when Earthrace collided with a fishing boat off the Guatemalan coast last week. Peter Bethune details the settlement on his blogsite which is keeping a record of Earthrace's bid to beat the world record for circumnavigating the globe in a bio-fuelled vessel. Now, it seems they may get going again tomorrow, I had emailed the crew and spoke with some of the interests involved - Pete the skipper was glad to hear how some folk along with yours truly on this News -Blog were encouraging them not to surrender; my land-lubber source was observing what you can read for yourself in the Ground Crew's Blog (BTW: There's a vacancy ri...

Crystal Cave of Giants: Another Betty Holford special
2007-03-24 17:02:00
Betty Holford , a former colleague from CBC and also wrote excellent columns in the Barbados Advocate, is a good source for unusual material, as you recall she sent me a sweet story about a deer adopted by a dog! This time she stayed nearer to the Caribbean -This is the crystal cave of giants found in the Naica Mine, Chihuahua Mexico. These are Selenite crystals (gypsum) and are the largest crystals ever discovered. They are 1000 feet down in a limestone host rock where they are mining for lead, zinc and silver. These crystals were formed by hydrothermal fluids emanating from the magma chambers below. The miners had to drill through the Naica fault, which they were worried would flood the mine, and this is what they discovered. This mine also contains the Cave of Swords, another collection of large gypsum crystals.

Caricom Multi-National Security Forces shut barn door way past the Clydesda

Caricom allegedly has an agency for handling security matters, it's known as IMPACS: The Implementation Agency for Crime and Security {Ed's Note: With IMPACS breakdown of its acronym, instead of FOR I'd've used AGAINST, as I would not want some sarcastic wag like yours truly sallying forth some pithy comments in light of Woolmer's strangulation}the head of that particular arm of the regional grouping is Leonard Robertson based in Port Of Spain, and he issued a statement in light of Bob Woolmer's hit-contract....We of the Caribbean Community deeply regret the death of Mr. Robert Woolmer and the tragic circumstances surrounding it. We extend our deepest sympathies to Mrs. Woolmer and her family at this most difficult time. There was a special release sent by Caricom's agency for Security during CWC 2007 which gives overseas officers powers to operate in terms of security here, but nevertheless ensures they follow proper guidelines so we do not have a land version of the Shiprider Accord that nearly ruptured the Caribbean almost ten years ago...HOST venue countries for the International Cricket Council Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007 in the Caribbean have enacted legislation to allow non-national security forces to be deployed in their countries. The legislation is in support of the efforts of Caribbean governments hosting CWC 2007 to ensure that the tournament is safe and secure. A number of countries outside the region have contributed law enforcement and security expertise, including CWC participant countries such as South Africa, Bermuda, India and Australia and their personnel will be working side by side with their Caribbean colleagues. Earthrace Update: Capt's wife says vessel with Barbados start may abandon q
2007-03-20 11:22:00
There's bad news and good news... In continuing coverage of the ever-saddening plight of the Earth race a check with a Kiwi website of a radio station there indicates the crew may be forced to drop their pursuit of the bid to circumnavigate the planet in less than two months. Mrs Bethune says on the upside, Guatemalan authorities could be lenient about the collision as new evidence came forward -"Sheryl Bethune says the feeling is that her husband will not be held culpable for the crash, as the fishing boat had no lights on nor any radar equipment operating. She says the crew will be questioned by a Guatemalan judge on Tuesday morning. The crew of the New Zealand powerboat could be detained in Guatemala for up to six months. However, charges have not yet been brought against the Earthrace team. Mr Bethune said on Monday that the damaged powerboat made it to shore on its one remaining engine. He said it was unlikely that Earthrace would continue its bid to circumnavigate the globe."E...

Barbadian Anti-Terror Simulation - Really?
2007-03-20 04:47:00
When I was a tyke I am sure there is a quote about it all being a game of knights and checkerboards, if you know it - please holler HARD! It has a bearing on this story - don't you love items like these, makes you feel real safe, warm and bubbly inside...Unrest among passengers who subsequently started a fire on the tourist liner “Floating Point” anchored in Carlisle Bay forced the captain to call on the Barbados military, police force and fire service for emergency assistance. Quick response from these agencies saw the Barbados Coast Guard ferrying personnel of the Barbados Fire Service and Royal Barbados Police Force to the burning ship some 30 minutes before midnight last Saturday {Ed's Note: March 3rd??}. At the end of it all, four hours later, 85 of the 2000 passengers were dead; 22 injured and 129 people were unaccounted for and feared dead by drowning. The 400 crew members were alive but with some of them nursing minor injuries, mostly bruises. However, we can all b...

They came, They Heard, They Blogged - BBC LiveFive with Barbadian & Tri
2007-03-20 02:35:00
Well, I had my 15 seconds fame with the BBC tonight... I was worked into a frazzle originally for Saturday night, had called to reconfirm - only to learn they meant Monday after the WI vs Zimbabwe match!Re-geared the engines over Sunday night (what a pain, no karaoke nor partying for the usual weekend chaos, bummer) and waited the whole day for 9:15 pm to drop in like some ninja version of Cinderella... What did I do in between? Research!I learned how 37 is a key number in the West Indies tour of duty so far - Lara is 37, and Lara was out on 37 in their first victory as Pakistan too played the 37 game when Mohammed Yousuf was caught by Denesh Ramdin and bowled by Dwayne Smith for the same 37... Leading to some folk wanting to play that number in the lotteries here! I became very educated on this sport of glorious uncertainties...I also learned how a guy wore a Santa hat as it felt like Christmas since it had been so long since the Windies played this way; India made history in Trini...

Remember when Michael Winner was vowing he'd rather die than lose his leg? Winner contracted Vibrio vulnificus - a virus that lives in warm water and is transmitted through swimming with open wounds or by eating shellfish..."Female First in the UK also carried the release -"The bug commonly kills people within 32 hours of infection, but the 72-year-old cheated death by jetting back to a private clinic in London and undergoing a gruelling 10 week series of eleven operations that cost him a staggering $1.45 million."Believe it or not, there is a website which is called Jewtastic and this too had the same info on Winner's oh-so-memorable vacation in Barbados -"“I started shak...

Pakistan licked out of CWC 2007: Coach found in Hotel Room, dies today!
2007-03-18 21:23:00
Well, be careful of what you want, you may very well get it! Subsequent to being defeated by Ireland at Sabina Park on St Patrick's Day 2007, Pakistan no longer have any chance of qualification for the Super 8 stage of the ICC Cricket World Cup, as the team all came under fire after the humiliating loss to Ireland there is a fatality before the return home... As you'll recall, the boys from the Emerald Isle are sitting on three points after their nail-biting tie with Zimbabwe on Thursday March 15 netted them a single point to add to the two points they collected in their St. Patrick’s Day triumph, placing them at the top of Group "D."Now, Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer has died in hospital today after being found unconscious in his hotel room. In a Breaking News alert from CNN, it said how the 58 year-old coach watched his team crash out of the World Cup on Saturday after that unexpected Group "D" defeat by Ireland at Sabina Park. The India n journalist who is a Melbourne editor, yup, the one who pulled a fast one on a former Tourism Authority exec to send a story by any means, now is getting into fantasy tales using the Caribbean as a base...In his latest yarn, since it seems he is stuck here in Barbados until the Super 8's and is too broke to go to the other islands, he's now decided to do like DC comics and create an Elsewhen tale - he looks to explore the possibility of Mac Fingall's 2009 arriving two years early should Delhi pull off a victory at the final here at the Mecca... He's even doing ambush marketing by using the wrong soft drink and wrong rum to celebrate the ICC event -In the absence of colors, bottles of Banks beer and Mount Gay rum together with cans of Coke and Pepsi did the needful. The first step was to gulp down as much as you could and the second was to pour the rest on oneself in celebration. BREAKING NEWS/GREAT STUFF FOR BARBADIANS - ICC RELENTS: BOTTLED WATER ALLOW
2007-03-15 09:14:00
Perhaps we may yet see a conch shell blowing at a match? It seems the CWC Security Directorate and the ICC have relaxed their draconian dicta on bottled water, this can now be brought into match venues, with immediate effect. This is to make sure that people don't fall and faint! However, they're taking off the bottle tops as you enter a match venue. Apparently the decision decision was taken with “security and medical considerations in mind and with a view to making sure fans have access to as much water as possible while enjoying the cricket in the Caribbean’s tropical environs. Water will not be permitted in any other types of containers and no liquid other than water will be allowed in plastic bottles. “This is strictly a health matter and not a question of CWC’s safety and security policies being relaxed. {Editor's Note: YEEEAH, RIIIIGHT!!!!} We have been monitoring the weather forecasts throughout the region and the temperatures ...

Bananas skin up the Earthrace? Follow-Up!
2007-03-14 21:20:00
It seems when the Earth race left Barbados bright and early at 7:00 am on 10-3-2007, they may have offended the sea gods, at least that's according to their skipper, who pinned his propeller's break to the wrong fruit on board...-- bananas have been bad luck on shipboard since the days when most boats were powered by sail. That was because bananas give off gases that cause other fruit to ripen and become overripe more quickly - a potential disaster in the days when sailors depended on fruit to prevent scurvy. Bethune said that the person who brought the bananas on board the Earthrace was a landlubber, a passenger who paid to join the first leg of the race.Apparently, the guest's ignorance is what saved him from being keelhauled; JK-JK-JK {just kidding}!Despite the setback as he limps towards Panama, he still is hoping to beat the record of 75 days as the previous record holder did in 1998.**U P D A T E**Earthrace made it to Panama; a distance of just under 1300 nautical miles in ...

Plans to close Broad Street again? Thought it was free-flow for CWC 2007?
2007-03-13 19:36:00
Merchants from Broad Street want to close Broad Street to try and cash in on the CWC 2007 spectators leaving Super 8 matches - how does this reconcile with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) wishing to ensure that traffic remains flowing freely during the Cup?The LOC with the Chamber of Commerce held a Town Hall for the business community of Bridgetown on Monday 12th March at the Ideal Restaurant. This is where Francine Charles, the Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager of the LOC pledged that traffic would be effectively managed to ensure a free flow - which contradicted the wishes of the merchants... There was a subsequent promise from Ruall C. Harris, the Director of the Chamber "to investigate the possibilities" of such a move...Ms Charles added the only time that traffic could be affected is if Police needed to close a road for security purposes, but she would not elaborate!I wonder if the business community of the City realise that all one-ways run in Bridgetown pro...
