Activision To Skip E3 This Year, But Still Be Present
2008-05-05 01:56:00 The world's largest third-party game publisher will not be attending E3 this July, but they'll be in LA just the same hawking their own games at an outside press event."After careful consideration, for business reasons Activision has decided not to participate in any official E3 activities," Activision said in a statement to Gaming Nexus on Thursday. "We wish the ESA best of luck with the show."GameDaily confirmed the news with the ESA a day later on Friday. "While the Entertainment Software Association remains the preeminent voice for U.S. computer and video game publishers, we can confirm that Activision and Vivendi Games opted to discontinue their membership," said Rich Taylor, an ESA official. The news comes as E3 tries to reinvent itself for the second time in as many years. The event was scaled down in 2007 after major publishers like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony expressed disappointment in the rising cost and poor return on investment when considering the internet as a plat... Rockstar Declines Comment On PC Grand Theft Auto IV
2008-05-05 01:47:00 PC gamers holding out hope for Grand Theft Auto IV will have to hold it a little longer. Come out with the PC version and yourhands up! On Wednesday, Rockstar greeted inquiries about a PC version of the insanely popular console title Grand Theft Auto IV with an industry standard -- and no doubt disheartening -- "no comment."The no comment arrived after CVG pumped the developer for more information on a January report from French retailers. Originally, that report speculated that GTA IV would launch for the PC in October. On Wednesday, German retailer City Disc posted a November 2008 release date, prompting the follow up from CVG.City Disc has since amended its listing to October 30, 2008, with the following translated copy: "The release date for GTA 4 for PC has not yet been confirmed by the Publisher, Take 2. The release date is not guaranteed and is open to change."It's a very GameStop way of doing things, and should be considered a placeholder until confirmation from Rockstar o... More About: Comment
Nintendo Prez Iwata Scoffs At Wii Copycats
2008-05-05 01:26:00 Nintendo president Satoru Iwata knows all about those Xbox 360 motion sensing controller rumors, and he could care less. This image is pure comedy to Nintendo If Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is at all worried about the Xbox 360 motion sensing controller rumors, he wasn't showing it this week.In fact, if we at Sports Legends didn't know any better, in his latest interview on the subject he almost appeared to laugh off the rumors before moving on to talk Nintendo strategy. The comments came during an investors meeting on Thursday, and was transcribed by Develop Magazine."All I can say today is, it is not that easy to develop software which leverages the characteristics of the Wii Remote. We are not concerned about what other companies may do but rather more concerned with presenting them with new ideas to our customers based on the prospect that our existing customers will surely get tired of the plays enabled by Wii Remote if we do not try to improve the experience," Iwata said.... Infogrames To Buy Rest Of Atari For $11 Million
2008-05-02 06:18:00 Infogrames Entertainment plans to buy the rest of beleaguered video games pioneer Atari for US$11 million, the companies said Wednesday.Infogrames, based in Lyon, France, owns 51.4 percent of Atari's stock. The merger will give Atari shareholders $1.68 per share in cash. The deal must be approved by shareholders. Atari plans to call a special meeting on the merger after July, the companies said. However, since Infogrames owns a majority of shares, it could push the deal forward without the approval of Atari's current shareholders.Infogrames said the merger will allow it to have more control over restructuring Atari to become a bigger player in the North American market. It will also loan Atari $20 million to keep its operations going until the deal is complete.Atari dominated the video game console market in the late 1970s and early 1980s with classic games such as Pong, Asteroids and Space Invaders. But game and console makers such as Nintendo and Sega later stole Atari's crown. ... More About: Rest , Million
Tough Times: Sagging Economy Could Force Console Price Cuts (But Not For Ni
2008-05-02 06:14:00 Still holding out on a console purchase because the price is too high? You'll have to wait until October for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Snip, snip here, Snip, there. Viola! $250 consoles for everyone! Contrary to previous reports, the struggling US economy could force Microsoft and Sony to drastically slash console prices if they wish to remain competitive in the market, analysts said today.Previously, it was speculated that the sagging US dollar meant Sony would be unable to reduce the price of the PlayStation 3.But Activision CEO Robert Kotick doesn't think that scenario will wash. In his comments to Reuters Wednesday, Kotick said everything from rising fuel costs to the housing slump will make it more difficult to purchase a $399 video game console.Over at Next Generation, games industry journalism go-to analyst Michael Pachter was inclined to agree--with a few caveats."Demand is really the key," Pachter said. Reports: Grand Theft Auto 4 Set To Beat Halo 3
2008-05-02 06:07:00 BREAKING: People like to buy Grand Theft Auto IV (!!) "I'll drop a Master Chief like a bag of dirt." According to a report published on Thursday by Hitwise, a firm that monitors internet search traffic, Grand Theft Auto IV is expected to "handily" outsell Halo 3 as one of the biggest video games in recent memory.Pre-launch searches for "Grand Theft Auto 4/IV" overtook those for Halo 3 by 22 percent, which historically equals greater sales, says Hitwise. Further corroborating the findings is a new estimate by VG Chartz released today, which reports that Grand Theft Auto IV sold an impressive 4.2 million worldwide copies on Tuesday. In fairness, Halo 3 (was and) is available for only one console, the Xbox 360, compared to Grand Theft Auto IV, which is available for both 360 and PlayStation 3. Suffice it to say both games have done very well, thank you.The Verdict:Though expected being a multiplatform game, it's fascinating to watch the mainstream world stop, take notice, and even co...
GTA IV Overtakes Shenmue As Most Expensive Game
2008-05-02 04:53:00 Grand Theft Auto IV's $100 budget makes it the most expensive video game ever created by man. Grand Theft Auto IV is the new expensive hotness With an all but confirmed $100 million budget and a development staff of 1,000 people, Grand Theft auto IV is the most expensive video game ever created by man.GTA IV producer Leslie Benzies mentioned the numbers as estimates in an interview with the Times Online. The GTA producer also pointed out that the 1,000 developers, designers, producers and other video game-related professionals worked on the game for more than three and a half years. The figures mean that GTA IV's development costs have taken over the first place spot for most expensive game ever created from Sega's Shenmue for the Dreamcast. That game had a more modest $70 million budget, but in its defense it lacked prostitutes, Russian nationals and a Statue of Happiness.Analysts have predicted that GTA IV could gross more than $400 million in its first week, which would also b... Gibson said the experience included confirmations of many of curator George Broussard's previous claims about the game."We actually got to see the truth of Duke curator George Broussard's many past claims, including environmental puzzles and interactivity, a host of finished weapons, the existence of an in-game forklift, and plenty of heads and arms being blown off," Gibson said. Mainstream Criticism Of Grand Theft Auto IV Begins...
2008-05-01 03:20:00 As was the case with previous games in the series, activist groups, police, politicians, and surviving victims of violence criticized Grand Theft Auto IV on Wednesday, a day after the game was launched nationwide. If it's in the game, it's in the game. The Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) protested the game today saying, "drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime... [it] is not a game, and it is not a joke."Grand Theft Auto IV gives players the option to drive drunk after consuming digital alcohol, but the game suggests taking a cab after drinking with in-game buddies.Nevertheless, MADD has called upon the Entertainment Software Ratings Board to reclassify Grand Theft Auto IV as an Adults Only game, effectively banning the game from sale in the U.S. since neither Sony nor Microsoft allow the sale of AO games on their respective consoles in America.Nearly 13,500 people die in drunk driving crashes each year, with another half million injured in alcohol-related crashes, assert... Grand Theft Auto IV Sales Give Iron Man An Iron Wedgie
2008-04-30 05:42:00 Grand Theft Auto IV is projected to make $400 million dollars this week, and movie gurus are worried the rampant success will suck the life out of Iron Man . Isn't he supposed to be invincible? I own you, Iron Man. Analysts have predicted that six million copies of Grand Theft Auto IV will pass into the hands of eager gamers this week for a total of $400 million in revenue. Trouble is, those gamers are the same people that might have spent their money on Iron Man, which arrives in theaters this Friday.Earlier this year EA's chief executive John Riccitiello said movie executives told him they feared the game could "kill" Iron Man, the indestructible iron-encased superhero from the Marvel comic of the same name. "I don't think I've ever heard of that before," he said. "There's a big reset happening now."Indeed, Iron Man was supposed to be one of the big blockbusters in the traditional summer movie blitz, but now, with more than half a billion dollars flowing from the movie indust... Gamers Ponder Which Version Of GTA IV To Buy
2008-04-29 01:08:00 The question to spend $60 on GTA IV is an easy answer for most. The real question is "on which version?"A day before its release, Grand Theft Auto IV has already proven to be $60 very well spent, at least according to critical reception by both mainstream and the enthusiast press. The game is easily within the 95-100 percentile score range, independent of the version; a must-buy by most standards (provided you're 18 years of age, wink wink). With that out of the way, multi-console owners and passionate fanboys have quickly begun debating which version of Grand Theft Auto IV they should buy. At the moment, Sports Legends is still waiting for our retail copies to arrive for our own comparisons and analysis. In trying to answer that very question, Kotaku gave the slight edge to the PS3 version on Sunday, saying it looks slightly better and enjoys faster load times and fewer object pop-ins when compared to the Xbox 360 version. That said, the PS3 version is slightly choppier when compared... Iwata: Wii, DS Price Cuts Unlikely In 2008
