Comic Book Review: Final Crisis #7
2009-01-30 16:15:00
The Revolution was disappointed with Final Crisis #6. I thought that Morrison really dropped the ball and delivered an incredibly anti-climactic issue. It is becoming obvious that Final Crisis is simply not going to live up to my expectations. I can only hope that Morrison can deliver a grand ending that is at least somewhat coherent and has a nice impact on the DCU at large. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Final Crisis #7. Creative TeamWriter: Grant Morrison Pencils: Doug Mahnke Inks: Doug Mahnke, Tom Nguyen, Drew Geraci, Christian Alamy, Norm Rapmund, Rodney Ramos & Walden Wong Art Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin on a parallel Earth where that Earth?s Superman and Wonder Woman are black. (Maybe this is the old Earth-D?) They fly into the sky to investigate the red skies. Suddenly, the Ultima Thule appears on the scene. The door to the Ultima Thule opens up and ...

Shawn's FWIW: Final Crisis 7 First Impression
2009-01-29 04:22:00
I have read it 3 times now, and am still trying to figure it out. There is so much in there, each page so dense, and the story so disjointed that I am still trying to work out all of the story beats, and the details of what happened in the story. I like to mull things over and not go for the immediate reaction, but this does concern me a bit. I was hoping for DC to gain some capital with Final Crisis , as most of DC's events, at least Crisis related, have hit good notes and helped propel the Universe along. I don't see the average DC reader doing anything more than scratching their head after reading this issue. Maybe following issue in respective comics will clear things up. I will be digging deeper, and of course will let you know what I think after some deliberation. If Final Crisis ends up a failure, it was a wild, original spectacle of one. For what its worth.

This week is slightly Marvel heavy. Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Justice Society of America #23 kicks off the Black Adam story arc. This is Johns? final story arc on the JSA so I fully expect it to be a good one. However, the DC comic book issue that I am most looking forward to reading is Final Crisis #7. Yes, there is no doubt that this event has had its problems. But, the fact remains that I like Morrison?s writing and I am very curious to see what Morrison has in store for us with the ending to this big event. Which ...

Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From January 21, 2009
2009-01-28 20:59:00
All right, let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. Let?s do the comment of the week award. This week I am going to give the best comment of the week to Kirth responding to the Dark Avengers #1 review. Kirth commented: ?So THIS was Bendis' BIG IDEA. The idea which REQUIRED Secret Invasion to happen in order for Dark Reign to "make sense". Yeah. Right. I'm a little underwhelmed. It worked as a story, but I don't see how this "replacement Avengers" story REQUIRED all that Secret Invasion la-la. Oh yes...And once again we see the story impediment know as "The Sentry" poking his ret-conned, way-too powerful presence into yet another comic. Can't he fly into space and..........I don't know, do "stuff" in space with spacey characters and not serve as the plot hole to "drive the endgame truck" through. If he's really Marvel's Superman then have him DO something SUPER. Have him lead or leave, because if this series of comics ends like World War Hulk did, I...

Bunker Bulletins: Amazing Spider-Man #584
2009-01-28 14:00:00
Creative Team Writer: Marc Guggenheim Pencils: John Romita Jr. Inks: Klaus Janson Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 "Character Assassination Part 1" This issue appears to be the wrap up of 3 of the storylines that have been running in Spidey. First up is the mayoral race. Second is the mystery of who is the Spider Tracer Murderer. The last one is the identity of Menace. The mayoral race gives us some down to earth type moments for the story. Villains Shocker and Boomerang have an interesting discussion about voting. Boomerang is trying to convince Shocker that he needs to vote. It looks like the vote will go down to the wire so the super villain vote could be critical. Someone has been killing people and leaving a spider tracer on them. Of course, the police are trying to hunt down Spidey since he is the logical suspect. Guggenheim throws a twist into the final scenes when it appears ...

Creative Team Writer: Greg Pak Artist: Leonardo Manco Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10 Reading this was like watching a good summer action flick. Rhodey (War Machine ) is cyborg who is set up to "take on monsters and madmen in international hotspots". He is assisted by team leader Bethany Cabe and Parnell Jacobs (his pit crew). Parnells' wife was kidnapped by Eaglestar International in another country. Rhodey charges in with blazing guns taking out missles and remote controlled tanks. He shows that he is a true hero when he sacrifices himself to protect the mercenaries who are attacking him. He rescues Parnells' wife. Parnell's wife makes one request. That Rhodey not kill any of the men who attacked her. She wants them to live to stand trial. Rhodey agrees and uses a weapon that blinds them for a short time. Norman Osborn is notified that Rhodey is winning. He dispatches Ares to...

Shawn's FWIW: Final Crisis and a War of Kings
2009-01-27 13:43:00
For What its Worth: I cannot help but like Final Crisis . I know that it has been slow moving, repetitive, and confusing. I really am against decompressed comics, so I should not be liking this series. So what is wrong with me? I am generally a fan of Grant Morrison, but I try to be "professional" enough to not let the "fanboy" part of my brain override my critical thinking. After reading issue #6, Superman 3-D #2, and a couple of online pieces, including a Grant Morrison interview, I think I have stumbled onto it. This is not Morrison trying to give us yet another sequel to Crisis on Infinite Earths. This is Morrison cramming a bookful of nifty neat ideas, and using a "channel changing" (his words, not mine) storytelling style to show us what happens to the souls of our characters as they fight the good fight. The surprise (apparent) death in Final Crisis #6 did not have the same effect on me as it seemed to have with most of the comic "blogosphere". I don't know how people reac...

Creative Team Writer: Len Wein Pencils: Chris Cross Inks: Rob Stull w/Chris Cross Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10 I know this was on Rokk's list of books he was not looking forward to, it caught my attention when I saw who was the creative team. Len Wein on Justice League . I picked it up when I saw the writer. The artists also helped. I really liked Cross' work on the old Slingers series from Marvel. Wein does a good job with the Faces of Evil event. DC is focusing on the villains this month and chose Starbreaker for the League. Starbreaker was introduced in the original Justice League series. Starbreaker appeared before issue 100. Starbreaker is telling the story of his previous encounters with the JLA. We don't find out until the final pages that the Guardians trapped Starbreaker in a shadow dimension. Starbreaker picked up a follower. The follower is the Shadow Thief. It...

Comic Book Review: Thunderbolts #128
2009-01-25 17:30:00
The Revolution is vaguely familiar with the Thunderbolts. The last time I read Thunderbolts Kurt Busiek was the writer and the roster consisted of Citizen V, Mach 1, Techno, Atlas, Songbird and Moonstone. I also must admit that I have never read anything at all from Andy Diggle. All in know is that Diggle is a British writer and that means I will probably dig his work since I pretty much love every single British writer currently working for Marvel and DC. I have decided to give Thunderbolts #128 a try since this is a new era on this title and a good jumping on point. Also, one of the followers of The Revolution left a comment urging me to give Thunderbolts a try. The follower commented that since I love the Knaufs that I should also enjoy Andy Diggle. So, with that in mind let?s go ahead and hit this review for Thunderbolts #128. Comic Book Review: Dark Avengers #1
2009-01-24 16:15:00
The merciless onslaught of new titles spinning out of the wake of Secret Invasion begins with Dark Avengers #1. Marvel wants our money and is giving us plenty of reasons to give it to them with several intriguing new titles coming out over the course of the next month. Even though I have been less than impressed with Bendis? work on New Avengers and Mighty Avengers ever since the end of Civil War, I have still decided to give Dark Avengers #1 a try. The main reason is that I think that Bendis might actually be on to something with this title. The roster looks interesting and I think that Bendis has something special in store for the reader with this title. I also like Deodato?s artwork so if nothing else I will enjoy looking at this issue. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Dark Avengers #1. Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael Bendis Art: Mike Deodato Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10 S...

Comic Book Review: Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #2
2009-01-23 16:00:00
The Revolution loved Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #1. It is unfortunate that DC?s wretched shipping schedule with all things connected to Final Crisis really ruined the impact of this story. Asking readers to go six months between issues on a two issue mini-series is absolutely ridiculous. Having said that, I am still excited to read Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #2. I am looking forward to reading more about Morrison?s take on the history and composition of the Multiverse. I also expect that this issue will clear up a few of my questions with Final Crisis #6. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #2. Creative TeamWriter: Grant Morrison Pencils: Doug Mahnke Inks: Christian Alamy, Tom Nguyen, Drew Geraci and Derek Fridolfs Art Rating: 10 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with Ultraman holding the Infinite Book . Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From January 14, 2009
2009-01-21 18:00:00
All right, let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. As always, The Revolution got tons of great comments over the past week. It is always hard to pick the best one of the bunch. However, this week I am going to give the best comment of the week to David 2 in response to the Final Crisis #6 review. David 2 commented: ?Let's see... where to begin? How about a revised equation? Unacceptable Delays + Disjointed Storylines + Anticlimactic Battles + (Darkseid - power) + ((Batman + Gun) - Character) + No Real Major Villain + No Major Cosmic Forces + Smallville-level WB/CW Angst + Try To Reason With People That Have No Will Whatsoever + Pathetic God Machines X (DiDio) Squared = ANTI-LIFE I think that pretty much sums up the whole situation right there.? Hilarious! And it got me to do a spit-take as I was drinking my Café Bustelo. Comic Book Review: Action Comics #873: New Krypton
2009-01-21 00:00:00
The end of the New Krypton story is finally here. For the most part, The Revolution has enjoyed this story. Johns and Robinson have done an excellent job handling this multi-title story and making sure that the story is incredibly consistent no matter which writer was handling a specific issue. Many multi-title stories tend to get a bit disjoined and schizophrenic. Not New Krypton. Johns and Robinson clearly spent the time and effort plotting out and drafting a story that would remain consistent between all of the titles impacted by the New Krypton story. I am confident that Johns will deliver a solid ending to the New Krypton story. Let?s do this review for Action Comic s #873. Creative Team Writer: Geoff Johns Artist: Pete Woods, Renato Guedes & Wilson Magalhaes Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with General Lane and Lex watching news reports of Supergirl turnin...

Creative Team Writer: Peter Tomasi Pencils: Don Kramer Inks: Jay Leisten Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10 Tomasi continues his excellent run on Nightwing. As part of the "Faces of Evil" feature, Ra's Al Ghul is the focus of this issue. In the wake of Batman's death, Ra's is trying to confirm his suspicions. Of course, Ra's is able to piece together that someone else killed Batman. He always dreamed of being the one who did it. Ra's builds the case that Dick is becoming the next Batman. Dick feels that Ra's is trying to cope with missing out on killing Batman by making Dick into his new arch enemy. Tomasi (aided by Kramer/Leisten) does a great job of establishing the new conflict between Dick and Ra's. I will miss this series when it ends. Highly recommended.

Creative Team Writer: Paul Cornell Pencils: Leonard Kirk and Mike Collins Inks: Jay Leisten and Cam Smith Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10 "Hell Comes to Birmingham" ends with a bang. The only letdown was in the art department. At times it seemed rushed. I guess that was why Mike Collins and Cam Smith were brought in. The art was above average but not up to the standard set in the previous issues. The team comes together to battle Plotka. Plotka is a duke of Hell. Plotka gains the energy he needs to create the Mindless Ones (first seen in the Lee/Ditko Dr. Strange stories) by trapping people in the Dream Corridor. If you willing agree to stay there, Plotka will bring your fantasy to life. Captain Midlands is bought by the memory of his dead wife. Comic Book Review: Final Crisis #6
2009-01-17 16:00:00
The Revolution loved Final Crisis #5. Morrison did a phenomenal job transforming Darskeid into a villain who truly feels like a god. The ending of Final Crisis #5 was quite powerful as Darkseid appears to be the most powerful villain that we have ever seen in the DCU. I am excited to see what Morrison has in store for Darkseid with Final Crisis #6. With only two issues left on this big event, I expect to get plenty of exciting developments in Final Crisis #6. I also expect Morrison to push along the plotlines faster than he has been and to start delivering the big pay-off moments like he started to do with the end of Final Crisis #5. Let?s hit this review for Final Crisis #6. Creative TeamWriter: Grant Morrison Pencils: J.G. Comic Book Review: Action Comics #871: New Krypton
2008-11-13 16:50:00
The Revolution has certainly been intrigued with the beginning of the New Krypton story that is snaking through all the titles of the Superman family. I fully expect Johns to keep the ball rolling with Action Comic s #871 and crank out another quality read. The New Krypton story has so much potential and I am interested to see what new twist Johns throws at the reader with this issue. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Action Comics #871. Creative Team Writer: Geoff Johns Artist: Pete Woods Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with Commander Gor and Lieutenant Mur walking through New York City with a look of disdain for the humans around them. Comic Book Review: Superman/Supergirl: Maelstrom #1
2008-11-12 14:30:00
Since last week's episode of Smallville featured the teamup of Clark and Supergirl, I thought it would be fitting to review the first issue of the new Superman /Supergirl mini-series. Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From November 5, 2008
2008-11-11 20:20:00
All right, let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. The award for the best comment of the week goes to Joe Average who posted this comment to The Revolution?s review of Ultimatum #1: ?For a first issue, I am tending to like this more than hate it. Most television shows and movies have an opening sequence to "hook" the viewer. Not much story, mostly flash. From that perspective, i like the way this issue starts off. Is it deep or complex? No. Does it need to be at this point? I don't think so. Magneto is one of my favourites so it's nice to see the death of his children really push him over the edge. Granted, if history is any indication, Loeb will eventually drop the ball again, bur for now I give it an 8 overall. Yes, an 8 may be high for the deep thinkers out there, but compared to Secret Invasion, i'm liking this ride MUCH better... PS - HE LOVES YOU? Joe Average definitely liked this issue much more than me, but he gave good supporting evidence concerni...

Comic Book Review: Ultimatum #1
2008-11-10 16:00:00
Ultimatum has finally arrived as Marvel simply could not wait for their other ?big event? in Secret Invasion to finish before cranking up this newest ?big event.? I have to admit that Ultimatum doesn?t interest me that much. With the exception of Ultimate Spider-Man, I stopped caring about the rest of the Ultimate Universe years ago. Also, I am not too sure that it was a wise idea by Marvel to tap Jeph Loeb to head up this big event. I enjoyed Loeb?s work over at DC, but Loeb has been incredibly disappointing since he came to Marvel. I mean, Wolverine was just awful and Hulk and the Ultimates 3 have been practically unreadable at times. I do not have faith in Loeb being able to craft a riveting big event with Ultimatum. I wish Marvel had given this task to Millar. Anyway, let?s hope for the best and go ahead and hit this review for Ultimatum #1. Comic Book Review: Adventure Comics Special #1: New Krypton
2008-11-07 16:45:00
There have been rumors swirling that DC was going to start printing Adventure Comic s once again as a regular monthly title. While that remains to be seen, we did get Adventure Comics Special #1 this week. This issue features the Guardian and also has a cameo appearance by a C-list Legionnaire. I have enjoyed the New Krypton story so far so I fully expect Adventure Comics Special #1 to be a quality read. Let?s go ahead and hit this review. Comic Book Review: Justice Society of America #20
2008-11-06 16:15:00
The Revolution always looks forward to the latest issue of the Justice Society of America . This title is white hot as Johns continue to crank out excellent reads each and every month. We certainly have plenty on our plate with Justice Society of America #20 as the JSA has to not only deal with the internal schism between those who support Gog and those who do not, but they must also now deal with the JLI from Earth-2. Let?s go ahead and do this review for Justice Society of America #20. Creative Team Writer: Geoff Johns Pencils: Dale Eaglesham Inks: Nathan Massengill Art Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10. Election Day 2008
2008-11-04 15:12:00
Today is Election Day for all of my fellow Americans. So, I wanted to take this opportunity to urge everyone to make the effort and to take the time to go and vote. I know that it will be a pain in the ass to get out of work in order to run over to your polling center. And I know that we all have busy schedules and hectic lives. And we all know that the lines to vote are going to be insanely long. But, it is important that we all exercise our right to vote. Even though we do not live in a democracy, our limited right to vote is still a precious gift. And more importantly, if you don?t vote then you don?t get the right to bitch and complain about the Duocracy that has a death grip on our country. So, please, everyone go and vote for whoever you support.

Comic Book Review: Captain America: Theater of War: Operation Zero Point #1
2008-11-04 01:30:00
Marvel is rolling out several one-shot special issues under the banner of Captain America : Theater of War. These issues are designed to give supply the reader with Golden Age tales of Captain America and his missions during World War II. I dig the idea of further fleshing out Cap?s history, but I was hesitant to purchase any of these issues since I already am overrun with buying so many Secret Invasion and Final Crisis tie-in issues every single week. Then I saw that Daniel and Charles Knauf were slated to write Captain America: Theater of War: Operation Zero Point #1.
