Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From March 26, 2008
2008-04-02 14:36:00 Let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:All Star Superman #10Teen Titans #57The Winner: Teen Titans #57This week was a solid week dominated by reads that were average to slightly better than average. Not too many titles this week were worth a nomination for the Che. All Star Superman #10 was another excellent read. Morrison continues to deliver pure magic on this title. I love the wonderful blend of silver age style plots melded with modern day style story telling. I am not a big Superman fan, but this title is an absolute joy to read. However, I had to give the Che for the best read of the week to Teen Titans #57. It is hard to beat an issue that serves up tons of pure Ravager goodness. And now the nominees for the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week:Countdown to Final Crisis #5New Avengers #39The Winner: New Avengers #39Countdown to Final Crisis #5 was another disappointing read. Comic Book Commentary: Secret Invasion Poll
2008-03-31 21:47:00 Secret Invasion #1 is slated to come out this week on April 2. So I figured now would be a fine time to slap a poll up on The Revolution. I?m curious to find out about the expectations that the followers of The Revolution have for Secret Invasion. Personally, I think this event is a train wreck waiting to happen. The entire basis for Secret Invasion of who is a Skrull isn?t an actual story or plot. It is simply a plot device. And while I adored Bendis? work on Daredevil and have loved his impressive run on Ultimate Spider-Man, the fact is that I have found his work on team titles and big events to be incredibly unimpressive. New Avengers has been a dreadful read and House of M was such a disappointment. Despite Bendis being a talented writer, I simply don?t think that his talents work with team titles and big events. Having said all that, I am still going to remain optimistic and hope for the best. I would be thrilled if we got treated to a quality read with Secret Invasion. Comic Book Review: New Avengers #39
2008-03-31 21:25:00 It is no secret that The Revolution has been highly unimpressed with the feeble effort that Bendis has put forth on New Avengers . Each issue seems to get duller and more pointless than the last one. New Avengers #39 is a spotlight issue on Echo. Oh, lucky me. We get a spotlight issue on quite possibly the most uninteresting and boring character in the 616 universe. Outside of Bendis and Mack, I do not know of anyone who finds her character fascinating. I?ve certainly never thought Echo?s character was worthy of a roster spot on the Avengers. Oh well, I guess I?ll just have to hold my nose and dive into this review for New Avengers #39.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisArtist: David MackInks: Jeff HuetArt Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 3 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 5.5 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with Echo telling Wolverine that she doesn?t believe in this whole Skrull conspiracy theory. Comic Book Commentary: Seigel versus DC Comics
2008-03-30 15:35:00 The comic book industry was rocked by a historic ruling on March 26, 2008 from the Federal District Court in the Central District of California. The judge ruled that the Siegel heirs have copyright interests in the content of Action Comic s #1. The award was only limited to Action Comics #1 because that was all the work that Shuster and Siegel performed for DC before signing the contract that assigned all their rights to Superman over to DC.This is a huge decision, but the battle is far from over. I am sure that Time Warner is going to appeal this decision. So it will be some time before we get a final ruling on this matter. This ruling involves some highly complex Copyright laws. And I?m not going to try and explain them in great detail. My area of law that I practice is workers? rights, civil rights and discrimination, not copyright and trademark law. But, I will give you a quick summation of what might interest the typical comic book reader. Before I begin, if you want to read a wo... More About: Commentary , Book
Comic Book Review: Teen Titans #57
2008-03-29 03:24:00 The Revolution enjoyed the last issue of Teen Titans . I found the new Clock King and the Terror Titans to be pretty interesting antagonists for this story arc. I?m looking forward to learning more about these villainous teens. Comic Book Review: Green Lantern #29
2008-03-28 14:08:00 Geoff Johns is using Green Lantern #29 as an opportunity to deliver a ?Secret Origin? story. I?m curious to read Johns decides to do much tweaking here and there with Hal?s origin in order to match it up more with what Johns has been doing with the Green Lantern mythos. So, while I normally don?t love re-telling of origins, I think that Green Lantern #29 should be a quality read.Creative TeamWriter: Geoff JohnsPencils: Ivan ReisInks: Oclair AlbertArt Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with a Hal Jordan as a young boy holding his father?s flight jacket and watching his dad test a plane for Ferris. Young Hal tells a young Carol that his father is piloting the plane. Snotty young Carol comments that her daddy owns the plane that Hal?s dad is flying. Comic Book Review: Countdown to Final Crisis #5
2008-03-27 20:15:00 The last issue of Countdown to Final Crisis was mind bogglingly bad. Just about everything about it was truly horrid. Honestly, I don?t see how Countdown to Final Crisis can get any worse than it currently is. There is no way that Dini and Giffen can deliver pathetically lame reads with the final five issues of this title, right? We shall see. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Countdown to Final Crisis #5.Creative TeamWriters: Paul Dini, Adam Beechen & Keith GiffenPencils: Jim StarlinInks: Rodney RamosArt Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: Lucky us, this issue is also narrated in the form of journal entries by the Cadmus lab tech from last issue. Comic Book Review: Iron Fist #13
2008-03-27 03:00:00 The Revolution has enjoyed the Immortal Iron Fist. This has been a fairly consistent title that usually offers up a solid read. I?ve actually been surprised at how good this title has been. Immortal Iron Fist has certainly exceeded my initial expectations for this title. I?m sure that Immortal Iron Fist #13 will be another quality issue. Comic Book Commentary: marvel b0y
2008-03-26 03:04:00 I was browsing through Comic Book Resources and found the Lying in the Gutters column for Monday, March 24, 2008 to be rather interesting. The column touched on Marvel B0y and his controversial blog that caused a big storm over at Marvel?s office. Unfortunately, I didn?t get to read the blog before it was self-deleted. Fortunately, Lying in the Gutters posted the highlights from the blog. You can check out the Lying in the Gutters Monday, March 24, 2008 article right here. Be warned that there are some spoilers, however I don?t know how reliable they are. Here is what Lying in the Gutters highlighted from marvel b0y?s blog.?Highlights include:1) SECRET INVASION - Bendis is finally going to get reunited with his man-crush. Looks like a bunch of the 70?s heroes were replaced by Skrulls which means gold-shirt, tiara-wearing Cage is back. Not-so-Sweet Christmas. 2 weeks until Brevoort?s praising this on his blog.2) One word: MODOG (aka Fraction?s brilliant new idea for an Iron Man villa... More About: Commentary
Comic Book Review: X-Factor #29
2008-03-25 19:18:00 The Revolution always looks forward to the newest issue of X-Factor with baited breath. Peter David was simply born to write this title. However, this award came down to a very close race between Iron Man #27 and Captain America #36. This was such a tough decision and Captain America #36 just narrowly edged out Iron Man #27. Both titles together with X-Factor are the three strongest reads that Marvel publishes. Comic Book Review: Batman and the Outsiders #5
2008-03-24 20:13:00 Batman and the Outsiders managed to deliver a rather average read with the last issue. Comic Book Review: Justice League of America #19
2008-03-21 18:36:00 The Revolution did enjoy the last issue of Justice League of America . However, this current story arc had better not turn out to be nothing more than an advertisement and jumping off point for Salvation Run. Comic Book Commentary: Justice League
2008-03-18 02:25:00 Newsarama posted a little article about the new Justice League title by James Robinson that was announced over the weekend at Wizard World: Los Angeles. It appears that we are getting a more aggressive strike force styled version of the JLA. Robinson?s philosophy is that since the word ?justice? is in the JLA?s name that they should be in the business of bringing criminals to justice rather than sitting around and being attacked or stopping a crime in progress.Evidently, a character gets killed during Final Crisis and Hal Jordan is pissed off and wants the JLA to go exact some justice against the murdering villain. The JLA wants to take a more cautious route and that causes a schism. So, this all leads Hal Jordan to team up with his old compatriot Green Arrow and they go on to form their version of the Justice League.Robinson revealed that the roster will include Hal Jordan, Green Arrow, Ray Palmer, Supergirl, Batwoman, Freddy Freeman and Mikaal Tomas and Congorilla. Comic Book Review: Fantastic Four #555
2008-03-17 22:45:00 The Revolution was extremely excited for Mark Millar?s debut issue on the Fantastic Four . Now, I will admit up front that I have simply never been much of a fan of the Fantastic Four. I have tried it off and on in the past and it has failed to hook me each and every time. However, I enjoy much of what Millar cranks out so I decided to make this leap into the waters of the Fantastic Four once again.I have to admit that I was rather unimpressed with Millar?s debut issue on this title. It wasn?t bad, but I didn?t find it particularly interesting either. It was kind of like eating rice cakes. It won?t make you gag, but you can?t say that you are dying to eat them again. Having said that, I still have faith that Millar will make Fantastic Four an entertaining read. 2008-03-17 13:46:00 The Revolution was absolutely stunned and shocked that Bendis delivered such an entertaining read with the last issue of Mighty Avengers. I couldn?t believe that we got an issue that actually moved along at a quick pace, progressed a major plotline, gave us plenty of action and ended the issue with a bona fide hook ending that got me excited for the next issue. 2008-03-15 18:55:00 Green Lantern Corps is a title that is fighting to earn a permanent spot on The Revolution?s pull sheet. I gave this title a try during the Sinestro War. Comic Book Review: Booster Gold #7
2008-03-14 15:29:00 The Revolution was not all that impressed with Booster Gold #0. I appreciated that Johns and Katz put forth the effort to make the issue a true Zero Hour styled issue, but it was just too slow and repetitious for me. Having said that, there is still no doubt in my mind that Booster Gold #7 will get this title back on track. Booster Gold has been a huge surprise here at The Revolution. Comic Book Review: Countdown to Final Crisis #7
2008-03-13 16:49:00 There are only a handful of issues left on Countdown to Final Crisis. That is about the most positive thing I can say about this comic book. For my own sanity, this title will mercifully be at an end soon and I can cease chronicling this story for the benefit of others.
