Bunker Bulletins: Robin #183
2009-02-24 21:00:00
Creative Team Writer: Fabian Nicieza Artist: Freddie Williams II Story Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Robin #183 is the final issue as it gets canceled to make way for the "Battle of the Cowl" event. Nicieza brings back one of Robin's deadliest foes to finish the series in a story called "Robin Dies At Dawn!". He takes the time for a quick check on Tim's (now ex-) girlfriend, the Spoiler, and Anarky (who wants to be Robin's version of the Joker). Based on this story, you can expect to see the Spoiler and Anarky back in future storylines. The question is which series will they be in. The main story is the showdown between Lady Shiva and Robin. Shiva outclasses Robin in every area except one. His mind. Robin shows that he is every bit the statigist that Batman was. He knows he would loose a one-on-one fight with Shiva so he plans ahead and sets his trap ahead of time. Nicieza deserves a bo...
Blogroll Part 2
2009-02-24 17:30:00
All right, it is time to continue our look at the comic book blogs that The Revolution loves to read. Comic Book Legacy: This blog is run by Kevin and it focuses on comic book reviews, comic book movies and anime. Kevin cranks out some great reviews. Kevin adds just enough detail in his reviews to give the reader a great sense of the issue without spoiling the entire story. Kevin cranks out a nice amount of reviews each week. Kevin has a good critical eye and I have found that his recommendations are pretty spot on. What is particularly cool about Comic Book Legacy is that Kevin also reviews episodes of super hero cartoons and anime as well. Kevin has a nice writing style and that make his reviews pleasant to read. Comic By Comic: This is an excellent blog that focuses primarily on comic books and comic book movies. Rich does a fantastic job with this blog. Rich has a great sense of humor and this blog always has some highly entertaining posts. Lately, I have been ...

Bunker Bulletins: The Death-Defying 'Devil #3
2009-02-24 14:00:00
Creative Team Writer: Joe Casey Artist: Edgar Salazar Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 10 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10 Salazar's art blew me away in this issue. I went back and just stared at many of the pages in this book. The images of The Ghost's plane and 'Devil riding on the wing were out of this world. And the scenes of the Ghost plane flying through the villain's base were excellent. Not many comics boast art like this. Unfortunately, the story does not live up to the art. Casey wrote a good action adventure but does not put much else into the story. Like eating cotton candy, the story does not have much substance to it. I would like to think that Casey did not want to write something that would distract from the art. Hopefully next issue will have more of a story to compliment Salazar's art. Highly recommended.

Comic Book Review: Outsiders #15
2009-02-23 21:30:00
The Revolution enjoyed Batman and the Outsiders Special #1. I had dropped Batman and the Outsiders a while back because this title had become such a pointless and directionless mess of a read. However, I gave Batman and the Outsiders Special #1 a chance and enjoyed it. Tomasi has earned my respect and trust with his amazing rehabilitation of Nightwing. Therefore, I feel confident that Tomasi will be able to work his magic on the Outsiders and make this title a quality read. Let's go ahead and do this review for Outsiders #15. Creative Team Writer: Peter Tomasi Pencils: Lee Garbett Inks: Trevor Scott Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with Alfred meeting with Geo-Force, Black Lightning, Metamorpho, Katana, Halo, Creeper and Owlman. Alfred explains how Batman formed the Outsiders so that there would always be a "Batman" outside of Gotham. Alfred continues that Batman hope...

Bunker Bulletins: Dynamo 5 #0
2009-02-23 14:00:00
Creative Team Writer: Jay Faerber Artist: Mahmud A. Asrar Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10 Issue #0 is a good introduction to the Dynamo 5 team. Faerber has created an interesting back story. When Captain Dynamo is killed, his wife finds out that he fooled around with other women. She gathers together 5 of his off spring to form Dynamo 5. In this issue, a think tank that specializes in super-powers has developed a super suit. Unfortunately, the janitor steals it and takes it for a test run. The team is dispatched to take him down. It was interesting to see the team does make mistakes. They each seem to want to take the villain on by themselves. Captain Dynamo's wife is the coordinator from their base. She comes up with a solution that the team does not think of. The teaser on the last page (the return of a former villain) is enough to bring me back for future issues. Recommended ...
Bunker Bulletins: Amazing Spider-Man #587
2009-02-22 14:00:00
Creative Team   Writer: Marc Guggenheim Pencils: John Romita Jr. Inks: Klaus Janson Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 I liked this cover. It is very dramatic with the contrast between the background, Spider -Man , and the word "Accused". Hats off to the designer. The story was good but suffers from being one of the middle chapters of a 4 part story. Matt (Daredevil) Murdock is brought in as Spider-Man's lawyer. Most of this issue is a look at the reaction of various characters to Spider-Man's arrest. The best part of the issue was the continuation of the Spider-Tracer Killer storyline. When one of the supporting characters uncovers the truth, they go to a person they think can be trusted. It turns out that person is part of the group setting Spider-Man up. The fall out from this is the highlight of the issue. Recommended if you have read the other parts of this story. If you have ...

Comic Book Review: Uncanny X-Men #506
2009-02-21 19:30:00
The Revolution has been critical of Fraction's work on Uncanny X-Men . It has hardly been anything impressive. However, Fraction showed some improvement with Uncanny X-Men Annual #2. It was by far the best effort that Fraction has given us on this title. Hopefully, Fraction can keep the ball rolling and give us at least a solid read with Uncanny X-Men #506. Let's go ahead and hit this review. Creative Team Writer: Matt Fraction Pencils: Terry Dodson Inks: Rachel Dodson Story Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with Emma Frost waking up in a white room full of white squares. One of the white squares turns black. Emma touches it and black ink pours from the square and fills up the room and envelops Emma. Emma screams out for Scott. We cut to Emma waking up from her nightmare. Scott asks if she is okay. Emma replies that nothing is wrong. However, Emma has a scared look on her...

Bunker Bulletins: Justice League of America #30
2009-02-20 15:00:00
Creative Team Writer: Dwayne McDuffie Pencils: Jose Luis Inks: J. P. Mayer Story Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 6.5 Night Girls out of 10 The Justice League should not be boring but this issue is. This one is the battle between the Justice League , the Shadow Cabinet, and the Shadow Thief. Unfortunately, this one shows too many panels of the characters standing around and talking. The art by Luis and Mayer is very well done. The problem with it is too many static poses. It does not look like there is any movement by the characters. Maybe with a different story, this art team could have done better. It makes me long for the days of the one and two part JLA stories. This story might of been improved by condensing it. The plotline that needs to be resolved is the forced romance between Hawkgirl and Red Arrow. Back when Black Canary and Green Arrow became involved, it seemed like a natural progression of their charac...

Comic Book Review: Dark Avengers #2
2009-02-19 23:20:00
The Revolution was pleasantly surprised with Dark Avengers #1. Bendis turned in a solid debut issue. I have been highly critical of Bendis' run on New Avengers, so I was not expecting much from Dark Avengers. After a good debut issue, I am hoping that Bendis might have a quality title in store for us with Dark Avengers. Let's hope that Bendis can keep this ball rolling with Dark Avengers #2. Creative Team Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Mike Deodato Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin in Latveria, 37 years ago. We see Morgana walk into a tent where we see Victor Von Doom as a little boy. Victor is sleeping. Morgana states that she is going to kill Doom as revenge for him betraying her trust. That Doom stole her knowledge of the black arts. Morgana says that the world will be spared Doom's future selfish villainy. Morgana is about to stab Doom when she realizes tha...

Bunker Bulletins: Brit #12

Creative Team Writers: Bruce Brown, Robert Kirkman Artist: Nate Bellegarde Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10 Brit is part of the Robert Kirkman corner of the Image Universe. Somehow I never happened to read an issue. So it is a cruel twist of fate that the first issue I read is the last one. Kirkman says in the letter column that it will be back in some form in the future. The background story is Kirkman and Terry Moore wanted to do a book along the line of The Authority. A big screen summer blockbuster style. Brit is the story of a man whose wife dies. When he gets over the shock he takes his son and searches the world for a way to make him invincible. He finally developes a serum and injects his son (Brit). Brit becomes invincible but does not gain any additional powers. His father eventually remarries. The new marriage produces twins. He injects the twins with an improved version...

Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From February 11, 2009
2009-02-18 17:45:00
All right, it is time to dish out The Revolution's weekly awards. As always, the followers of The Revolution chimed in with plenty of great comments. I went ahead and gave the award for the comment of the week to Mike McNulty, a.k.a stillanerd in response to the Batman #686 review: "As you observed, Neil Gaiman is, in fact, an author of several novels, and not just a writer of comic books (although certainly is Sandman comic book series is considered one of his signature works). He also has written some Batman stories before as well; in fact, this issue reminded me of one he did for Batman Black and White #2 called "A Black and White World" in which Batman and the Joker take a "lunch break" from the comic book and go "backstage" to talk about their roles in the comic. One of the things I got out of this issue is that, by using the "funeral" of Batman, Gaiman is reflecting on the power of stories, which is a common theme in his work. In this case, Batman is not just a comic boo...

Comic Book Review: Incognito #2
2009-02-17 21:00:00
The Revolution enjoyed Incognito #1. Brubaker is one of the few writers who has earned my trust and I willingly purchase any title he writes regardless of the subject matter. Brubaker delivered with Incognito #1 and got me hooked on this title. I expect another well written read with Incognito #2. Zack is certainly not the most likeable protagonist, but he is definitely intriguing. Let's go ahead and hit this review for Incognito #2. Creative Team Writer: Ed Brubaker Artist: Sean Phillips Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin in a secret facility located in "The middle of nowhere, USA." The guards at this secret prison are irritated that one of the serial killer inmates is being allowed to meet with his high-priced lawyer. Bunker Bulletins: Amazing Spider-Man #586

Creative Team Writer: Marc Guggenheim Pencils: Barry Kitson Inks: Karl Kessel Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Hats off to the Spidey team. They have me interested in Spider -Man again. The secret origin of Menace is a very good story. After reading this issue, some of the mysteries in Spider-Man make sense. It does answer the questions surrounding Menace (who has been around for 40 issues now). I like the explanation of how this character became the villain they are today. I am trying not to say who the character is for the sake of those who have not read the previous issue yet. Unlike many storylines, this one does make sense. I am looking forward to the next part to see the impact of the final page. It should be exciting. The art team of Kitson and Kessel turned in a fine job. Kessel does a good job of complimenting Kitson's pencils. Recommended. I am looking forward to the next ...

What is so amazing is that there are so many truly well written and passionate comic book blogs in the blogosphere. I have a link list to the various comic book blogs that I enjoy reading. However, I figured that it was time for a blogroll in order to shine a spotlight on all of these excellent comic book blogs that people should really be checking out. All of these blogs have inspired me to do my best with The Revolution. We will go ahead and do this blogroll in alphabetical order. 4thletter: David, Gavok and Esther form the three headed blog known as the 4th Letter. This is great looking blog that has a nice clean and professional appearance. This is one of those blogs that I find so well put together that it makes me embarrassed about my own. These guys deliver posts ranging from opinion pieces concerning the current state of affairs in the world of comics, short reviews of current issues and retrospectives of older issues and the history of comic books. 4th Letter off...

Bunker Bulletins: Batman and the Outsiders Special

Creative Team Writer: Peter Tomasi Pencils: Adam Kubert Inks: John Dell and Sandu Florea Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10 This was a title I enjoyed when it debuted with Mike Barr and Jim Aparo. The later incarnations have floundered. Especially the latest. Creative teams were announced, changed, direction changed constantly, and now we are seeing the latest reboot. This time it is being directed by one of DC's brightest stars-Peter Tomasi. Anyone who has been following The Revolution know that we are big Tomasi fans. Getting Nightwing and this special in the same week was a treat. Batman and the Outsiders is really Alfred and the Outsiders. Tomasi has proven that he knows how to write Alfred in the Nightwing series. Some of the early scenes in this book will bring a tear to your eye. Bruce has a failsafe in place that Alfred did not know about. He is given the mission of reasse...

Bunker Bulletins: R.E.B.E.L.S. #1
2009-02-15 14:00:00
Creative Team Writer: Tony Bedard Artist: Andy Clarke Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10 The new R.E.B.E.L.S. series got off to a good start, not great but good. The villains will remind you of old Legion of Super-Hero villains. Villains like Tyr and Validus. Vril Dox still appears to be manipulative and egotistical. This is in-line with his characterization in previous series. The twist this time is that a mysterious entity has taken over L.E.G.I.O.N. and is out to capture Dox. I did enjoy the cameo by Brainiac 5. The art by Andy Clarke is similar in style to Barry Kitson's artwork. I believe Kitson was the artist on the original L.E.G.I.O.N. series. Having your art compared to Kitson's is a compliment. The action scenes (like the big shot of Tigorr being chased) really jump off the page. Bedard and Clarke have me interested enough to come back for another issue or two. I will kee...
Comic Book Review: Batman #686
2009-02-14 16:00:00
Batman #686 is the first half of a two issue story by Neil Gaiman entitled "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" And what an appropriate question given the fallout from RIP and Final Crisis. I am curious to see how Gaiman writes Batman. This is not a title that I would have ever imagined Gaiman penning. This should be an interesting ride. Let's go ahead and do this review. Creative Team Writer: Neil Gaiman Pencils: Andy Kubert Inks: Scott Williams Story Rating: 10 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 9.5 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with Batman off panel asking where is he and if he is dreaming. Another voice from off panel answers that Batman is in Gotham and that he is not dreaming. Batman answers that he knows it is Gotham but that it does not look right. We see the Catmobile pulling up at a small dive on Crime Alley. A glorious looking Golden Age Catwoman steps out of the car. (Selina never looked better.) ...

Bunker Bulletins: Nightwing #153
2009-02-13 14:31:00
Creative Team Writer: Peter Tomasi Pencils: Don Kramer Inks: Jay Leisten, Sandu Florea, Rodney Ramos Story Rating: 10 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Nightwing, under Peter Tomasi's guidance, has become one of my favorite comics. It will be missed since this is the last issue before it gets cancelled to make room for "Battle for the Cowl". Tomasi developed into the perfect Nightwing writer. This was a very good wrap-up to the series. What was amazing was that I did not realize there were no fights with villains until after I finished reading the book. Tomasi crafted an interesting story out of Dick's move from New York and return to Gotham. He sets up the new status quo by having Dick accept that Gotham (and Wayne Manor) is his home. Little touches like having the JSA assist with his move, his heart to heart discussion with his old friend Wally (the Flash), the rescue of "Abe" the giant penny (I lov...
Comic Book Review: Action Comics #874: New Krypton
2009-02-12 17:45:00
Action Comic s #874 paves the way for the new direction of this title in the wake of Superman's departure. It should be interesting to see how reader's react to Superman's exit. For the most part, I have enjoyed the New Krypton story so I expect that Robinson will deliver another dependable read with Action Comics #874. Let's go ahead and hit this review. Creative Team Writer: James Robinson Artist: Pablo Raimondi and Renato Guedes Inks: Pablo Raimondi, Walden Wong and Jose Wilson Magalhaes Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with Superman being overwhelmed by numerous members of the Kryptonian military guild. This week is lacking that one or two titles that really has me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? I am looking forward to Nightwing #153 with decidedly mixed feelings. I have been so impressed with Tomasi?s handling of Nightwing. All right, it is time to dish out The Revolution's weekly awards. As always, the followers of The Revolution chimed in with plenty of good comments. I decided to give the award for the comment of the week to Chicagokmc in response to the Secret Warriors #1 review: "Interesting concept on a few fronts. I agree with some that we've seen "corrupt SHIELD before". This is the pattern Bendis took with Secret Invasion where we find some event has the makings of a huge retcon. So I'll just wait and see with that. This would make Hydra even more powerful than we've seen before, so it is interesting that Norman Osborne disbanded SHIELD quickly and that Hydra allowed that to happen. Sets up some possibilities of Hydra vs. Osborne (ideal) or him even being in league with Hydra." Okay, let's go ahead and check out the nominees for The Che for the best comic book of the week: The Mighty #1 Agents of Atlas #1 Secret Warriors #1 Jersey Gods #1 The Winner: The Mighty #1 Agents of Atlas ...

Comic Book Review: Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds #3
2009-02-06 20:15:00
The Revolution has been less than impressed with Johns? interpretation and handling of the Legion of Super Heroes ever since their story arc over in Action Comic s. I have never gotten the impression that Johns likes much less understands the Legion of Super Heroes. And Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds is only bolstering my aforementioned opinion of Johns. Hopefully, Johns will actually focus on the Legion in Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds #3 and let them take the spotlight in this issue. Let?s go ahead and hit this review. Comic Book Review: Secret Warriors #1: Dark Reign
2009-02-05 17:15:00
The Revolution has been looking forward to Secret Warriors #1. Bendis? handling of Nick Fury was one of the few bright spots in the Secret Invasion tie-in issues that we got on the Avengers titles. It is nice to have Nick Fury back in a monthly title. The Marvel Universe is just that much more interesting with Nick Fury active and doing his thing once again. I am not familiar at all with Jonathan Hickman. Hopefully, Hickman?s strengths will fill in for Bendis? weaknesses on team titles. I have a good feeling that Secret Warriors will be an enjoyable action adventure title. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Secret Warriors #1. All right, it is time to dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. As always, the followers of The Revolution chimed in with plenty of great comments. I went ahead and gave the award for the comment of the week to Ilan the Portlander Rebbe in response to the Final Crisis #7 review: ?After reading and re-reading final crises and shifting through all the online commentary, I am convinced that one of two things is the case. Either Grant Morrison is genius of such unparalleled vastness that it would make Shakespeare and Milton weep, or he decided to knock off early and turned over writing duty to Timmy, an eight year old on acid suffering from severe ADHD. You can see that this is Morrison?s baby, and that his overall vision is rather brilliant. But as they say, the devil is in the details, and in his case, the details go everywhere. The story goes everywhere, and frankly, every plot seemed like it needed its own mini-series. We never get answers to so much. Where and why did Captain...

Comic Book Review: New Avengers #49
2009-02-03 21:45:00
The Revolution has continually been unimpressed with Bendis' New Avengers . And the past year New Avengers has become practically unreadable with the Secret Invasion related stories. I hope that Dark Reign presents a fresh start for New Avengers. Bendis impressed me with his work on Dark Avengers #1 and hopefully he can import some of that energy and excitement over here on the lackluster New Avengers. The shocking direction of having Luke Cage join up with Norman Osborn was pure genius by Bendis and should provide the foundation for numerous interesting stories on New Avengers. Let's go ahead and hit this review for New Avengers #49. Creative Team Writer: Ivan Brandon Pencils: Julian Lopez Inks: Mark Farmer Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 I always liked the original Kobra series (Jack Kirby, etc). It layed out the basic storyline that Kobra would follow over the years. One of the major players in it was the good brother who opposed Kobra. This story builds on how the new Kobra is selected/trained. Of all the "Faces of Evil" stories, this is the best I have read. The author lays out a logical reason for why the new person becomes Kobra. Kobra appears to be even more vicious than the previous one. This is one of the few times where it seems that the villain is thinking before he makes any moves. His plans are well thought out. If Kobra continues to be handled this way, the heroes are in for some bad times. If this would lead into a new Kobra series, I hope this creative team gets the assignment. Brandon, Lopez an...
Comic Book Review: Justice Society of America #23
2009-02-02 16:15:00
We have arrived at Geoff Johns? final story arc on Justice Society of America . After this three issue Black Adam story arc concludes, Johns will leave the JSA with issue #25. That depresses me since usually when Johns leaves a title it usually suffers a serious drop in quality. At least, that is what happened to The Flash and Teen Titans. At any rate, I am optimistic that Justice Society of America #23 will be a great read and that Johns will go out on a high note with the Black Adam story arc. After all, it is pretty hard to mess up a story involving one of DC?s coolest characters in Teth-Adam. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Justice Society of America #23. The Revolution has been looking forward to Mighty Avengers #21. Bendis is officially off the title and Dan Slott is in. And I could not be more excited. I have been incredibly unimpressed with Bendis? work on New Avengers and Mighty Avengers ever since the end of Civil War. Super hero team titles simply do not play to Bendis? strengths. On the other hand, Slott?s talents should lend him to being a good match for a super hero team title. I am expecting to finally get to see the Avengers as a team with a story that actually deals with the Avengers themselves. Slott?s Mighty Avengers should fill the craving for a classic Avengers title that has been missing since Bendis took over the Avengers franchise. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Mighty Avengers #21. Creative TeamWriter: Dan Slott Pencils: Koi Pham Inks: Allen Martinez & Danny Miki Art Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: W...
