Happy ending, after all!

Wow, what a great ride it has been! It really was for me one of those life shaping experiences. I met so many people, I learned so many things, I grew as I person, as a result of exposing myself to all this intercultural exchange, I became to know and understand myself better, to accept the good things and the bad things about life. I mean, you'd better, you only got one. On my last night, I just got out with Sabrina, the way we always used to. We started in La Fianna, which is that place with fabulous nachos I keep yapping about. All the bar boys, Pablo, Alfredo, Enrico, told me they were sorry I leave, they hope to see me again soon, and you know, seemed genuinely caring, and not just because the three of them dig Sabrina but cos they are good people. They invited us to a glass of champaign and later on for a Jaggermaister shot, which is my favourite shot drink. They knew :-) Some french guys sent us some drinks. Oh well, we said "merci" and moved on. Some american guy, who claim...

Making the most of it
2008-05-30 18:43:00
I'm staying here in front of the mirror, doing my hair, wondering what should I wear tonight. I'm gonna go out with La Sabrina, and, as usual it's gonna be a blast!I'm so looking forward to it. I promised myself I wont act stupid, sad, guilty, or, god forbid, over-intellectualising. Cos I have a tendency to do that sometimes. I'm just gonna take everything as it comes and enjoy it the best I can. It's my last chance. For now. :-)
All in one song

If I had to describe my life those last six month away from home, this is definitely the song who gives the best feeling. With emphasis on pretend bit, but hey, aren't we all?I'm glad I didn't stay until the end, though.Time To Pretend Lyrics

Movie Monday: Dr. Jones, come to your senses!
2008-05-26 13:57:00
Last night I had the worst nightmare. I was staying in line to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull all over again. Aaaaargh!Fortunately, I woke up just before the CGI Paramount Mountain showed up, in panic sweat from the tormenting dream. In order to cool myself down a notch, I got into the fridge and stayed there for a while to catch my breath. Unexpectedly, a nuclear blast destroyed the city down, causing me and my fridge to fly far away, somewhere in a deserted plain. Thanks god for The Fridge, as I have all my limbs together, attached firmly to my body. Now I have to find my way home, or whatever is left of it. Yet, I can't help myself but to have a bad feeling about this. I might have to (spoilers alert!):swing with some crazy monkeys in an Amazonian forestjump three 500 meters waterfalls in the said region, with nothing but an amphibian boatfight ten thousand zillion killing termitesjump from a steep cliff on a rubber-tree, then catapult myself safe to land...

Saying good bye never easy
2008-05-25 22:06:00
This is my last week in Barcelona. I'm equally eager to leave it and painfully sad it's over. The story of my life. The last days i skipped the gym, instead i took long walks in the city. Sometimes i would stop in a Starbacks and read this mind blowing book i carry with me at all times, but mostly just wonder about everywhere, alone or with friends, when they're available. Once, when i was in Born, my favourite district in Barcelona, I entered this incredibly old Gothic cathedral i had always passed by before. It's a huge construction, an amazing architecture that makes you feel overwhelmed. I sat there on the wooden bench and watched the high pillars raising to the sky, the worn frescoes on the walls and the painted glass. Then I took out the book and started to read, like I was in a public library. It was fantastic, the ambient, the low Gregorian music in the background, the tourists taking pictures and the guides giving detailed descriptions, with a soft echo following their ...

Every time I'm in Italy I pledge to dedicate myself to becoming a better person. You know, like stop reading trashy magazines and start reading Pico della Mirandola, stop treating my body like an amusement park and do more artsy stuff, stop thinking about my pathetic little existence and focus on the big issues of the humanity. (Of course, now I'm not in Italy, so I have already broken some of my commandments, but what the hell, I'm human.) If you never travelled to Italy, do yourself a favour and go there. For centuries it used to be the center of the world, not only politically, but culturally. Just don't take your mother with you! She'll keep complaining there's too much to walk, her back hurts, her feet are swollen, her nylons have a hole, you're doing it on purpose to irritate her (whatever it is that you're doing), there are no taxis in Venice, unless you count the fucking gondolas, too much water, etc. But, I learned to ignore it.Chances are, wherever you h...

Bloggers united for human rights - May 15th.Sara Alawi, refugeeLet's stop for a moment and think about the people who don't officially exist. Nobody claims them, nobody wants them. I'm talking about the war refugees. There are no statistics, because of obvious reasons, but apparently there are more that 30 million of them. Most in Palestine, Iraq, Darfur, Balkans, but not only. Because of the war and the new political configuration in their area, these people don't belong to any country now. They are stateless.Being stateless doesn't give you the "privilege" to vote and be enrolled in the army. However, there are only 34 countries in the world who recognize the status of the stateless people. Basically, nothing is changed, you are issued a passport, are able to work, pay taxes, have properties, get married, etc. But only in those 34 countries. United Nations are taking the responsibility over the stateless people, and fight for their rights to be treated as human beings anywher...

However, I did scheduled something on May 15th, the Bloggers United for Human Rights Day. Please do check it out and leave your opinion. I would be nice to find it when I return.Ta-Da!xoxM
It's a new day
2008-05-07 23:30:00
Today I woke up only to smile elated at this new day. I've been workings so hard these last months, demanding so much from myself. It's not the writing itself, although, I have well over 100 000 words (!), but fighting my own fears, prejudices, shortcomings and to some extent, lack of self confidence. I honestly suspected myself at times of not being capable of going through with it. Too much distraction. Too much self doubt. I needed to stay strong and focused, and listen only to the voice within me. Or voices, if you will. Well, I'll be damn, today I felt so damn good about myself. So I lingered in bed late, watching TV and reading celebrity gossip sites (I know!). Then, to further indulge myself, I had a raisin pastry before going to the gym. Yummy. Love in my tummy. I even went swimming in the pool. But the highlight of the day was going to the mall. I had two slices of pizza *gasp* and then bought myself a present. A beautiful little black dress. I'm in love with it. When I ...

M'lady loves strawberry cake
2008-05-06 19:20:00
Hello people, it's me again, Miss Marmelade. I hijacked m'lady's computer again, as she's gone out to buy herself a strawberry cake. Yes, you heard that right, she's eating sweets again. Thanks god for that, you have no idea how cruel she gets when she doesn't have her daily dose of glucose. She's about to finish that book of hers. She's like a lioness in a cage, furiously walking from one corner of the house to the other waiting for inspiration to hit her, and every time she doesn't find the "perfect" word, she roars in anger. I just make myself little in a corner, until she gets tired and lays wasted on the bed. But at least she's staying home now. You have no idea how worried I was for her when she wasn't coming home all night. M'lady would never do this to me, I kept saying to myself, while waiting for her in front of the window. She went out with Mistress Sabrina, clubbing and stuff, and when she does that, she always ends up coming home after the sunrise. I wonder ...

Movie Monday: Ironman
2008-05-05 22:43:00
Robert Downey Jr. gets out of bed, stays out of trouble, lays off drugs, avoids the slammer, decides to do a movie, and everybody gets to watch. And weep. And drool, possibly. I mean, he can make it worthwhile, and you know it. And how I know it. I watched an entire season of Ally McBeal (aaaaaargh!) because of him. Bad bad boy. This time he's a superhero. It was high time, I say. The guy exudes charisma. In fact, saying that RDJ is charismatic is like saying water is wet. And he really transfers its juiciness to our hero, Tony Stark, a lonely playboy genius. But the most important thing about Ironman is that it brings a whole new vision to the superhero movies. The character's Conscience. For Tony Stark, his conscience is something very palpable. He does not want to revenge someone's death, like most of the superheroes. The reason he even became one, is that he realised how wrong his past actions were and he wanted to change their consequences. He understands there is good, ther...

There's not such thing as a free lunch
2008-05-04 13:03:00
Lately I feel I lost control over things. I keep going out every night and pretty much sleep all day. I barely have time to do anything. I skipped gym a couple of times and it shows. I made a lot of dodgy friends, who keep calling me and invite me places, and instead of telling them no thank you, I keep going, and meet new people who are no good for me. When I first came here to Barcelona, I was looking for piece of mind. I only had it for a very short while, but I failed miserably in maintaining it. I'm pulling a Winehouse here! You know what, I'm glad I'm leaving soon. I'm going home for a couple of months. I need a good dose of reality to put things in order.

Yesterday, at noon, I went down with Sabrina for a coffee at the local. It was a national holiday and she was not working. We then said let's go for a tour as it's such a beautiful day.  Before we knew it, we were at the beach pier, where the shopping mall is. I ended up buying the geekiest tshirt ever, and she got herself a bathing costume. But then we got hungry and we went to this nacho place i love in Borne area, and then to a pizza place nearby. And then we got thirsty and we got to Sugar pub, where James, the owner, was so happy to see us again, he prepared us mojitos on the house. He's very cool, he can imitate a squirrel eating. We left Sugar with two new cool friends, two girls from Glasgow, Sheena and Sue, and ran into some friend of Sabrina, let's call him Generous Dede. From now on, I can't continue, because there are people who know me reading, and others who believe in me, but here I am, eighteen hours later, I just got home and I'm not at all sleepy. SIGN THE PETITION, PLEASE!
2008-04-30 10:10:00
Polar Bear Protection Delay EndedWhen I was little a read a story a bout a polar bear cub who was in a circus. He was yearning for the North Pole, as he heard so many stories about it from his mother. I always had a soft spot for these creatures ever since. Aren't they cute? Please, if you have a spare moment, sign this petition. It will make a little more difficult for governments to drill for petrol in Antarctica. In a court order issued yesterday, Judge Claudia Wilken sided with the Center for Biological Diversity, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Greenpeace against the Bush administration. Bringing the government's irrational and illegal protection delays to an end, Wilken gave it just two weeks to decide whether to list the polar bear as an endangered species. In addition, she ordered the decision to become effective immediately instead of being delayed by the usual 30 days. The Bush administration has been rushing out Arctic oil and gas leases at the same time it has ...

Eve was misunderstood
2008-04-29 16:27:00
I don't understand why women were punished for that stupid apple! It's not like, after all this time, anybody, and I mean ANYBODY, knows the difference between good or evil. Or have any true Knowledge, for that matter. You know, we could have been spared of thousands of years of useless history, where nothing interesting really happened but people moved from one place to another trying to demonstrate other people they're worth shit.I'm not saying this cos i'm a feminist, not by a long shot. Why would I want to vote, anyway, all those politicians bastards who put up the circus freak show make me throw up. Why would I want to go to work, please, may I be spared of all that corporate crap, thank you very much? Yet, I understand Eve, where she was coming from. It must have been fucking Bo-Ring to spend an eternity with that guy, Adam, with no other possibility of entertainment but taking long strolls around the garden. It was like prison, for crissakes. Maybe if he were more like T...
I CAN imagine!
2008-04-27 13:40:00
This is a picture I took while visiting New York two years ago. I've always had an obsession for The Beatles. Ever since I was a little girl. I would listen to my parents tapes (yes, cassette tapes!!!) and most of them were songs of this strange, strange British group. Of course, I didn't understand a word they said, but I really liked the tunes. They were using different words than the ones little Marmelade knew. Later on, Marmelade started to learn that language called English, and she began to understand those words too. And Marmelade was in awe, because that guy was saying something so very opposite to everything she knew and was taught, it made her wanna rebel. But, of course, she was just a little girl, who would care about her, anyway? Great, she was now an unfit little girl. The name Marmelade Skye is a tribute to this great group. And pretty much everything she does now, as an adult, is somehow influenced by them. Marmelade recently made a new friend, a cute puppy named Yu...

Paradox
2008-04-27 02:14:00
Wow, something very strange and disturbing has just happened out of the bloom. As I was minding my business, which is writing an "oh my god, i have a DEADLINE" article, when my yahoo messenger icon popped. Which is not unusual in itself. Still, when I saw the person trying to contact me, i froze. It's this guy I used to be close friends with a long time ago, and our friendship failed miserably, with me saying I never wanna talk to you again in my life. Well, never say never. I was curious to see what he has to say. Of course, this is not the first time he tried to contact me, but I always ignored his attempts. However, lately I find myself having a whole bunch of unhealthy curiosities, and well, a girl's gotta learn. Anywhoo, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, this bloke used to stay in the same city as me, for several months, during which, as I said, we became close friends. Now we both live in different cities. And different hemispheres, thanks god. We were not lovers, y...

Nothing really happened today, but I thought I should check out with y'all. Is it ok? Should I make something up (like I usually do) just to be interesting? Fine.I profoundly believe in karma. What goes around, comes around. Somehow, for every shitty thing I went through in my life, in the grand scale of things they proved to have a positive outcome. Truly fantastic even, that changed my life. Of course, I did a lot of stupid things myself for which, sooner or later I paid dearly. I'm not saying it's divine justice or something like this. It's just that, I don't know, the universe is conspiring to balance all our actions. One of the things I did, when I was a child, was to kill a dragonfly. Not just kill it, but actually I managed to catch it and then I inflicted a needle in it and let it die. I had to do it for my biology class. Each of us was supposed to bring an insect. Most of the kids would bring flies, bees, mosquitos and some boys were brave enough to show up with cockro...

Big smile / domestic update
2008-04-22 21:50:00
Today I woke up with a big smile on my face and it lasted throughout this entire glorious day. Nothing special really happened, Marmelade is just feeling absolutely fantastic and it's infectious. Like her good ol' friend Idnas hurried to reassure her during their bi-weekly yahoo messenger session, "don't worry honey, it'll pass!". Not yet, though. Finally, Toni, my flatmate, proved himself useful for the first time. He invited my sister and me to the theatre he works for, to the premiere of a new absurd play, whose title I don't recall. I really missed the atmosphere of a theatre, watching the actors saying the lines live and studying their every reaction. Unfortunately the play was in catalan, a language I understand in proportion of 63 to 78 %. So I can't really tell you if it was about a crustacean trapped under a rock in a river, a dancing gorilla or Napoleon's horse. But something like this. After that we went to a nice bar and we ate the most delicious nachos ever. I usu...

Sleepless
2008-04-21 05:38:00
It's past 6.30 am and i haven't been able to sleep at all. I watched the whole series of Angels in America (again), yet no signs of Mr. Sandman. I did some online sudoku, to no avail. I listened to Sigur Ros, twice, but it proved to be fallible. That's ridiculous, I never listened an entire Sigur Ros album before, as I always fell asleep by the fifth track. Hell, I even read some Bertrand Russell notes on his views on epistemology and logical atomism, but it only made me more alert. Speaking of which: What the fuck are these two doing here? This is just as plausible as Betrand Russell having an affair with Dr. Strangelove. Meh.Anyway. My sister is staying with me for three days now, but we already had several huge fights. Last one a few hours ago. Now she sleeps like there's no tomorrow, whereas I'm becoming an owl. Shit! She's gonna stay one more week. I'm not sure I can take it. I had a very serious, calm conversation with her this morning, I opened my heart to her and I to...

Oh my god! What has this world become?M'lady went to town shopping for new bikini, but she couldn't find anything that would do justice to her smoking body. You heard her yapping all the time about her gym classes and Gerardo, the aerobics instructor, who looks like The Rock. And the drama, oh the drama!, she made when she realised she had to give up Coca-Cola, chips and Cadbury Fruit&Nuts chocolate. I had to cook her cauliflower and carrots, which really put her in a foul mood. The things I had to put up with, when I think about it, it makes me shiver. But it all finally paid off. Now she's spending all the time in front of the big mirror, admiring her La Bündchen body. I'm off the hook.Yet, she desperately needs new bikini, as the sunbathing season is around the corner. This ad came to M'lady 's attention the other day.And you know how much she worships El Dylan. (Bit of a perverted old man, don't you think?). Freaky Friday: Glad it's over! Part One.
2008-04-18 22:29:00
There's a little story for you. Since it's Freaky  Friday , the voices in my head are whispering me a horror tale. Don't be afraid, it's not that scary, actually. Also, keep in mind the voices in my head are not speaking English. I had to have it translated for you, ok?It all started about ten days ago. I went to bed at midnight, as usual, read a boring book about the spanish civil war which has this strange effect of making me delightfully sleepy. Meanwhile she is taking her make-up off, combing her long blonde hair with slow, voluptuous moves, and slips into the sheets next to me. She likes to cuddle until we fall asleep. I like it too, but not that night. The more I read, the more alert I became. The following day I was having an important presentation at work, but somehow my attention couldn't focus on my need to relax and have a good night rest. There was something elusive bothering me, to the point of getting out of the bed and spend most of the night in the kitchen, starin...

Hi everyone. I'm trying to make this quick. It's me, little Marmelade. Shush! My mistress, my puppeteer is out at the Robots in Disguise concert, her favourite electro pop chick band, and I'm taking charge of the blog for a while. It's all about that stupid tell me eight things about me tag she received from her "friend" Max, and for some unfathomable reason she accepted that challenge. Well, I think she secretly has a bit of a crush on Max, she thinks he's very smart and funny and all, but you didn't hear it from me. Look at me, already spilling the beans and I'm not even started. For those of you who were wondering what my mistress does when she's not playing with her internet friends, these are eight 100% true things about her.She once was blonde. She once played karaoke duet with a British Navy guy in uniform. "You're the one that I want" was the song, and they were both pathetic. Nevertheless, drunk people cheered. She once held hands with a huge international rock star....

Bad Hair Day
2008-04-14 23:50:00
I knew it the first moment I woke up. My hair was a mess. Oh my god, it's one of those days! Now, when such disaster strikes, there's nothing you can do but stay home and hide. And that's what I did, except, there's not really any possibility of hiding in the peak of digital era, is it?Even when you put your messenger on invisible mode, you still get messages from people. Well, folks, my sister is coming back from London. Tomorrow. She just took that decision and she's gonna move in with me for a while. Which is fine, only I suspect she'll have one of her monumental foul moods and I'm in no condition to go through this. May the force be with me!I was so unsettled today that I almost ignored my friend Yummy Biscuit, who came all the way to Barcelona to serenade me with a guitarra and a big sombrero. Almost. But his cute little voice melted my sorrow away. I will return his kindness. This week-end I went to the birthday party of a Russian friend of mine. Boy, these people know ...

Freaky Friday: The Poll results
2008-04-11 18:05:00
You guys!About two weeks ago I started this poll, in order for me to find out a little bit more about you. I mean, I deserve to know your preferences and fantasies, it's only fair considering you are feasting with mines.First of all, I'm pleased to see that you, my dear readers, take very seriously sensitive matters such as sexual health. Of all the things you'd rather die than do, going ass-to-mouth is by far the worst thing that can happen to you. 48 percent would rather die than go there. Of course, this doesn't qualify for a majority, but ... close enough. I wonder why it is so? Maybe because your ass if off the menu? Just asking.Yet, I find you rather antagonistic. Only 8% of you would rather die than wank off in an airplain. People, it's NOT ok to jerk off in an airplain unless it's yours! Or maybe the captain just announced the plain would crush in about 5 minutes and that's the last chance to have some fun. Like in that movie ... Still. I find the whole thing disturbi...

I bet none of you, bitches, heard of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Well, it's not a rock band, that's not it is. It's a COUNTRY! Somewhere in the Caribbean Sea. I discovered it while documenting myself on some United Nations rules on refugee status. Yeah, I know!Check out their flag:How cool is that! The main economy is based on banana production. Actually, the whole country looks like a paradisaical island, with beautiful beaches and bounty bars growing in the palm trees. Except from some nasty volcano that strikes from time to time. Nothing serious, apparently. There are little over 100 000 people living there. They have 9 radio stations, one television broadcast station and one cable television provider. Also, they have internet. Yay!According to Wikipedia, the current Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is the Honourable Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, affectionately called "Comrade." Sweet!I'm so moving there! Buy myself a little house and spend the "european" winter...

A Hives concert is no place to be for the weak. You'll get pushed, poked, squashed, squeezed, smashed, possibly hit in the head by someone's shoe, but hey, it's sooooooooooo worth it. You'll get to see the campest guy there's ever been, and I'm a sucker for anything that's camp. Howlin' is The High Priest of Camp. And he's Swedish. Not to mention that Howlin' (look how close I was to him!) looks even better in real life. Blond hair, blue eyes, smoking body and all crayzay! Honestly, he is the lovechild of Jagger and Elvis. You see him shaking that booty, you get hypnotized.Needless to say, I'm in love. Profoundly and irrevocably. I want to marry him and have his children. Lots of them! We'll give names like Ulf and Inge.

Martin indeed scores easy! Those of you who are into anthropology might be enticed by this falsely advertised Martin Scorsese flick as a Rolling Stones documentary.Don't get me wrong, I love The Stones. I adore The Jagger. I think he's the coolest granddad on Earth. I might be convinced to get jiggy with him given the appropriate amount of alcohol. But I digress.Shine A Light is no documentary. It's a two hours concert in some small venue in New York, with about 20 songs played live by the band. There is a small intro, where we get to see another famous musician, Mr. Clinton avec La Madame, who happened to pass by the backstage. From time to time there are some short intermezzos with pieces of interview given by the lads in the seventies, but that's all you get. I honestly hoped it would be something like No Direction At Home, the real documentary about Bob Dylan. No way!I saw the Stones live and I had the time of my life. Why would I want to go to the movies to see the same th...
