Praise as good as cash to Brain
2008-04-25 05:16:00
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Paying people a compliment appears to activate the same reward center in the brain as paying them cash, Japanese researchers said on Wednesday. They said the study offers scientific support for the long-held assumption that people get a psychological boost from having a good reputation. "We found that these seemingly different kinds of rewards -- a good reputation versus money -- are biologically coded by the same neural structure, the striatum," said Dr. Norihiro Sadato of the Japanese National Institute for Physiological Sciences in Okazaki, Japan. "This provides the biological basis of our everyday experience that personal reputation is felt as rewards," Sadato said in an e-mail. Sadato's team studied 19 healthy people using a brain imaging technique known as functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI. In one set of experiments, people played a gambling game in which they were told one of three cards would yield a payout. The researchers then monitored t...

Life's Perspective

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country side with the purpose of showing him how poor people lived. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what the son would consider a very poor family. On their return trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?""It was great, Dad.""Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked."Oh yeah," said the son."So, tell me, what have you learned from the trip?" asked the father. The son answered:"I saw that we have one dog and they had four.We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night...Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve themselves. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to pr...

Mind-Boggling
2008-04-08 08:55:00
Found this one in my mailbox this morning; Thanks to the courtesy of Fun & Fun Only, this illusion is like nothing I've ever seen before. Did you take a close look at the picture? let me tell you it is not animated. Your eyes are making it move.To test this, stare at one spot for a couple of seconds and everything will stop moving. Or look at the black center of each circle and it will stop moving. But move your eyes over to the next black center and the previous one will appear to move after you take your eyes away from it.... Weird ???

Hello Entrecarders
2008-04-02 18:58:00
Hello Entrecard friends, please care to spare a minute or two for me, I'd like to have a word with you. For the past 10-11 days I've been pretty seriously dropping 300 cards everyday, and to read atleast 1/3rd of the articles and yet promote my new site( and second entrecard) hardly leaves me any time to manage or modify my dropping list. Sorry to all those who've been consistently dropping on me and yet aren't getting any return drops; as I said I was busy what with end labs approaching and all that. So I thought better of it today and started writing this post, for the same reason I've changed the place of my widget, hoping that powerdroppers may find this post in the pursuit of my widget. Those who have remained my regular droppers but haven't been getting my drop/blog watch in return kindly comment at the end of this post, giving me your entrecard url and your blog url. I promise you I'll add you to my dropping list within 3 hours. You can as well mail me or message me on...
Killer Bear? I'm just a big teddy, really!
2008-04-01 11:43:00
(article originally published in the newspaper Dailymail )It was a chance encounter that could have ended with flying fur and bloodshed in the snow. Wildlife photographer Norbert Rosing was taking pictures of a team of huskies in Canada's frozen north when a polar bear gatecrashed the party. Along with dog handler Brian Ladoon, Mr Rosing watched helplessly as the bear and one of the dogs approached each other.1 - This floe ain't big enough for the both of us: The bear gives the husky a stare that says beware 2 - Watch out, I'm a southpaw: The dog cowers as his adversary threatens to land a knockout blow3 - On second thoughts, you're not so bad: A nuzzle with the muzzle clinches the peace deal4 - Go on, give me a (bear) hug: The new friends enjoy a cuddle5 - If I lie here long enough I might even get a tickle on the tummy: The bear is playful, the husky is a little bemused and the handler (out of shot) is extremely relieved

RuBot II eats Rubik Cube for breakfast
2008-03-31 20:15:00
What the !@#$%?you must be wondering what I mean already, so lemme brief you well in advance, we're talking of an AI Robot(Artificial Intelligence buddy, grow up) whose sole purpose of existence is to set new records in the time it takes for solving the famous Rubik 's Cube . Yeah, we're talking of Robots solving the cube! Let's be frank about it how many of you ever solved a 3 x 3 Rubik's cube completely? Me for one never really made it though many times it felt I was mid-way through. If your answer was 'NO' like me, maybe you too can learn the technique hereSo coming back to the Robots, the RuBot II looks very much like a distant cousin of the T-800 in the Terminator series. This scary looking robot is capable of solving the Rubik cube, a puzzle game that still confounds a large segment of the population with it's intricacies. The RuBot II uses cameras in its eyes to scan the cube for a few seconds before using its menacing pneumatic arms to carry out the instructions base...

A Movie worth the tears you withhold
2008-03-30 11:19:00
Here comes my first movie review(there were others before but this one's solely mine) & I'm glad it's about a movie I'd love watching twenty years down the line; whatever I am, wherever I am. Anyway it's about "The Pursuit of happYness (2006)" (if you think I dunno the spelling of Happiness, think again). For a kid who grew up watching Will Smith as an action hero in flicks like Independence Day, Men In Black, Wild Wild West, an eye-opener of a fact- Will Smith is more than an action hero. A few days ago I was reading where I don't remember that Tom Cruise is without doubt a Great star but would never make a good hero. I would've assumed the same of Will Smith, but thanks to POH my opinion has changed.Coming to the plot, it's simple and straight-forwardly the real life story of Chris Gardner (a self-made millionaire, entrepreneur, motivational speaker and philanthropist). Most of the events in the movie are based on the real events in Gardner's life, let it be his acute...

Motley Fool's 12 Tenets of Value Stock Investing
2008-03-28 07:31:00
#1. Rule No. 1: Don't lose money.Rule No. 2: Don't forget Rule No. 1.Don't be satisfied to let a few stocks in your portfolio lose a lot of money while one hits a home run.#2. Be an investor, not a speculator. Too many investors jump on the momentum bandwagon and chase stocks just because the price is going up. Most believe they can get out before the stock price crashes — but very few do/can do!#3. Price is what you pay; value is what you get. Valuation always matters. Learn how to value companies.#4. Buy with a margin of safety. Estimates of value depend on a wide variety of inputs and are never hard and fast. Buying stocks at a significant discount to valuation estimates provides a margin of safety.#5. Stop trying to predict the direction of the market. Timing the market is a futile exercise that no one has consistently mastered. On the other hand if your investment thesis is right, the market will eventually come around.#6. Patience is a key element of success. Don't chase...

Tired of answering telemarketers?
2008-03-27 16:03:00
Call centre/BPO calls? Insurance agents? Sales officers?Ten ways to stop those annoying calls from irritating you:1 After the telemarketer finishes speaking, ask him/her to marry you!!!2 Tell the telemarketer you are busy at the moment, and ask him/her, if he/she will give you his/her home phone number so you can call him/her back.3 Ask them to repeat everything they say, several times.4 Tell them it is dinnertime, BUT ask if they would please hold. Put them on your speaker phone while you continue to eat at your leisure. Smack your food loudly and continue with your dinner conversation.5 Tell them that all business goes through your agent, and hand the phone to your FIVE YEAR OLD child.6 Tell them you have a problem with hearing and that they need to speak up.... louder... louder... louder!7 If they start out with, "How are you today?", say "I'm so glad you asked, because no one these days seems to care, and I have all these problems blah blah blah"8 Tell them to speak very slowly...

Ultrasonic Gun - A Weapon of the Future
2008-03-27 11:28:00
SONIC DEVESTATOR Forget the rubber bullets and water jets. The weapon of the future for controlling the mob will employ sounds. Or you may use it against the little monsters of the Halloween or an annoying neighbor. The handheld sonic gun, called Sonic Devestator (yeah, you read the spelling right), uses high-frequency sound pulses to deliver a devastating blast of stunning damage to biological targets. This has the effect of disorienting or rendering the enemy unconscious without inflicting lethal damage. The ultrasonic waves are headed in a 45-degree cone from the "muzzle" which keeps the user unaffected. The sounds of the sonic weapon can take about a minute to subside, but they do not induce any permanent harm or damage. The sonic gun also has a larger model, called Sonic Devestator Riot Control, which combines six smaller units into a single one. "Our research has shown that by using these adjustment controls it is now possible to drastically increase the sonic output effect ...

10 Google Video Documentaries You Have To Watch
2008-03-18 20:42:00
(Originally posted on Online Niches)I love Google Video because they have so many great documentaries free to watch. Here are my favorite 10. Some are sad, some are wacky, but they are all very informative and entertaining.1. Dangerous Knowledge In this one-off documentary, David Malone looks at four brilliant mathematicians - Georg Cantor, Ludwig Boltzmann, Kurt Gödel and Alan Turing - whose genius has profoundly affected us, but which tragically drove them insane and eventually led to them all committing suicide. 2. Dogfighting UndercoverBBC-Dogfighting Undercover-August 30, 2007 Investigation into the secret and dangerous world of international dogfighting. For a year and a half, a BBC undercover team operated alongside dogfighting gangs in the UK and Europe, capturing on camera the savagery of organised fights. The film also reveals how American pitbull terriers - a banned breed created to be the ultimate canine gladiator - have been sold by the gangs into inner city Britain.3...

Painting The Last Supper
2008-03-17 20:14:00
The story of the painting of The Last Supper is extremely interesting and instructive, and two incidents connected with it afford a most convincing lesson on the effects of right thinking or wrong thinking in the life of a boy or girl, or of a man or woman. Leonardo Da Vinci the noted Italian artist as we all know, thanks to Dan Brown, painted the Last Supper. It took seven years for him to complete it. The figures representing the twelve Apostles and Christ himself were painted from living persons. The life-model for the painting of the figure of Jesus was chosen first. When it was decided that Da Vinci would paint this great picture, hundreds and hundreds of young men were carefully viewed in an endeavor to find a face and personality exhibiting innocence and beauty, free from the scars and signs of dissipation caused by sin. Finally, after weeks of laborious search, a young man nineteen years of age was selected as a model for the portrayal of Christ. For six months Da Vinci work...
