The Google-God Index
2007-03-15 00:00:00
Google the word, “God .” Now, Google any other word you can think of. Who’s more popular - God or your random word? I call this The Go ogle-God Index (although others on the internet call it Godgle). Here’s my top ten results on the Google God Index, including their score in parentheses: 10. OgMog (0.003) - Our ...

SXSW: Day #2 and #3 - Getting Adjusted
2007-03-15 00:00:00
There is far too much to do here. Our first real day in the city was simply exploration. We visited the Capitol Building, tried out a “White Gummi Smoothie” at Jamba Juice, and spent time getting ourselves adjusted. The weather was fine and the atmosphere wonderful - a great way to start out our week ...

“Leaked” Human Giant Camping Trailer
2007-03-14 00:00:00
A purposeful marketing tactic (played off as a “leak”) from MTV put this video on the internet from Human Giant ’s new sketch show. It’s a great parody of every “A Simple Plan“-esque film ever made, except their entire story line is summarized into a boner-tingling 1:39 seconds. We at OgMog really like what we’ve ...

Textorize Your Images With This Online Engine
2007-03-13 00:00:00
The Textorizer takes any image file online and vectorises it using text strings. It’s an incredible machine (and free of charge). I’ve noticed that it works better with inkings or images with very defined edges. I tried it on our main header (on our home page) and it came out too muddy due to ...

First Glimpse of WATCHMEN
2007-03-13 00:00:00
Over at AintItCool, they’ve got a super hi-res screencap of Rorschach from Zack Snyder’s upcoming take on WATCHMEN as seen in the recently released R-rated 300 trailer. I’m of the mindset that WATCHMEN should never be made into a movie - it’s a work that’s largely tied to the medium we read it in, and as ...

Tuesday-Chooseday: Bond and Turtles
2007-03-13 00:00:00
CASINO ROYALE - After Chris Nolan re-began Batman, studios realized that franchise restarts are the way to go, and CASINO ROYALE does an amazing job of Ctrl+Alt+Deleting the series. Not only is this a must-own for Bond fanatics, but ROYALE has also got repeat value for the mild Bond fan in all of us. TEENAGE MUTANT ...

Pilot Radar: Animals
2007-03-12 00:00:00
Robert Smigel has had a pretty lengthy career in comedy. Hired as an SNL writer in ‘85, during The Return of Lorne Michaels, Smigel is most famous for TV Funhouse. He went on to become the Head Writer at LATE NIGHT, where he wrote the Synchro-Vox sketches and originated the character Triumph the Insult Comic ...

Garage Comedy
2007-03-12 00:00:00
Something that I miss about college is observing people trying out new performances. While not always pretty, the nascent form of creative endeavors generally have a unique charm, especially when their creators commit to the act as only the ambitious can. Of course, that becomes a lot more difficult when you have to ...

Will Murai Punk Art
2007-03-12 00:00:00
Will Murai makes large-format punk airbrush art. It’s bizarre and amazing and I love it. If I was to sum up his artwork, it would be “if Maynard ate Justin Bua and lived in the movie Blade Runner.” He uses an awesome visual motif of the “rock on” hand symbol, and he also has ...

OgMog Film Review Just because 300 is making March box office records doesn’t mean that it’s the movie to rush out and see this weekend. Instead of waiting in crazy lines for 300’s opening night, I decided to check out THE HOST instead. It’s getting consistently better reviews than 300, and let’s face it: how could ...

Upcoming Captain Marvel Movie
2007-03-12 00:00:00
Captain Marvel is perhaps one of the most challenging superheroes to translate onto the silver screen. While Captain Marvel is a superman-archetype, his alter ego - Billy Batson - is only thirteen years old. Captain Marvel is essentially the superhero version of the movie BIG. Sure, there was a Captain Marvel movie back in ‘41 (the ...

Public Health Dept. Gives L.A. an “F”
2007-03-12 00:00:00
LA is a dirty, dirty city. I love it though. Except when I contract massive, 3-week-long, super-virus colds after touching public door handles. The LA Dept. of Public Heal th has come to my rescue. Printable Cold Sores
2007-03-12 00:00:00
Printable Cold Sores are a great little project someone created where you can print out cold sores on clear labels and add them to advertisements. Nowhere in advertising is the gap between natural beauty and manufactured perfection more apparent than on subway posters. As we wait for transportation, we are unwillingly assaulted by larger-than-life representations ...

The Burger King Movie Apocalypse
2007-03-12 00:00:00
So I’m on redvsblue.com today when I saw their latest comic and instantly pulled a classic spit take. Some of you might know that the Geico cavemen are slated for an ABC sitcom deal. Bad enough. But now, friends and lovers, the Burger King (the Burger King !) will have his own feature-length movie out by the ...

Coverage on The Siege of Fulton Ave.
2007-03-12 00:00:00
I’ll always enjoy a quality teen flick. When I read about what went down in Westchester County, NY, back in 2k4, I thought to myself, “This would make a great teen flick.” Cops arrived at an upscale neighborhood to break up a high school party, but the partygoers locked the doors and turned off the lights, ...

Wanderlust #1: Road Trip
2007-03-04 01:28:02
What’s your road, man??holyboy road, madman road, rainbow road, guppy road, any road. It’s an anywhere road for anybody anyhow. Spring is coming so fast you can feel it hit your face, and it’s not Silent. And what better time to dust off your boots and get out into the world than March. I’m counting down 31 days until my first voyage to Asia. I know you’re all jealous. But while you’re brewing in your jealousy and I’m getting massages with happy endings, you might want to buy some gas and hit the road. The Sunday Times UK (article here) had an article a while back about the three best road trips in the world. And for all you LA beatniks, the #1 best road trip in the world is the Pacific Coast Highway. The article provides a gnarly detailed itinerary for a week trip up the coast. #2 is Lake Garda and the Dolomites, and #3 is the western Highlands of Scotland. So get out there. Make Sal Paradise proud. (flickr photo by barry)

Swiss Army Accidently Invade Liechtenstein
2007-03-04 01:28:02
Sometime in the past week, the Swiss Army accidently invaded neighboring Liechtenstein . Yikes. A 171-strong Swiss company got two kilometres into its neighbour before realising the mistake and heading back. Liechtenstein authorities made light of the intrusion, saying they only knew about it when the Swiss told them…The company commander led his men in the wrong direction in bad weather but gave the immediate order to return when realising the error. If that wasn’t embarrassing enough, check out the following quote: “It was all so dark,” one soldier told the Swiss newspaper Blick. Maybe they should stick to knives. (via BBC)

Another Meloy!
2007-03-04 01:28:02
Colin Meloy is best know for the wistful parlance he delivers as The Decemberists’ front man. The ancient tone of his vocals and ornate nature of his lyrics give the band an epic and far-off feeling, which has catapulted them into popularity since the re-release of Castaways and Cutouts in 2003. But did you know that he has a sister that is a writer? Her name is Maile Meloy and not only has she published 3 books, but she also a frequent contributor to The New Yorker and The Paris Review. More after the jump…

Standup/Spoken Word for Nerds
2007-03-03 01:27:02
Many OgMoggers are proud, self-proclaimed nerds. There’s nothing wrong with it, and society is growing to favor us, actually. Mainstream culture is now nerdier than ever, and with hipsters wearing glasses and sporting vintage 80s clothes you wouldn’t even wear in the 80s, the state of the nerd union is good. Enter Ernie Cline, artist, comedian, and nerd extraordinaire. If you go to the spoken word section of his website (ernestcline.com, who’s web bookmark icon is the symbol of the New Republic), you’ll find some great “stand-up-esque” material, all catered to 100% braniacs and nerds. My recommendation: Nerd Porn Auteur (NSFW) Download link

The Story: A French Submission-based Comic
2007-03-03 01:27:02
If there are two things the French are known for, they’re good taste and seduction. Add in some surrealism, mystery, and apocalyptic undertones, and you have this comic series - The Story . Apart from the enigmatic captions and destaturated love in this panel, the main thing that caught my attention was that every character in the comic is illustrated from a random reader-submitted photo. That’s right, these are all depictions of real, flesh-and-blood people. The idea of combining portraiture with a highly-stylized comic series gives it a very real yet very artificial feel. I think it was this inherent contradiction that sucked me into reading the whole series in one go. So far there are 22 panels, and from what I can tell, it was founded this year making it a very prolific series. If you like it, why not send them your picture? (via Drawn!)

OgMac is Born

Hey OgMoggers, I’m starting a series called “OgMac ” in which you can write in with questions about the Mac, the OS, or anything Apple related. You can write me sincere questions, you can try to stump me, but any way you slice it, you’ll get detailed (and borderline obsessive) information about what you want to know. NFL Draft ‘07: America’s Top QB
2007-03-03 01:27:02
With the immense popularity of Fantasy Football, we’ve also seen a growing interest in the NFL draft. And while this year’s draft won’t be quite as star-studded as in ‘06 (two Heisman winners and the man who won the Rose Bowl), there are some fine players and some tough decisions to be made. The current discussion is over which quarterback will get selected first: Notre Dame’s Brady Quinn or JaMarcus Russell from LSU. NFL teams are always on the lookout for new QBs, and these fellows seem to be the top prospects. Two different guys, two different styles, and my two cents after the jump…

Freedom Fridays: Your Week in Free Culture News
2007-03-03 01:27:02
Another Friday, another recap of this week’s most pertinent stories on digital rights and liberties. There are 5 big ones this week, so here we go… 1. FAIR USE Act - In what could potentially be a huge win in the ongoing battle against the DMCA, a bill was introduced into Congress this past week (pdf available here) that would allow for fair use circumvention of copyright-protection schemes under certain circumstances. If the bill passes, you will be able to lawfully exercise your fair use rights (which are guaranteed by the constitution anyway). Holler.

Weekly GrogMog Bar Review: The Chalet
2007-03-02 13:26:04
NOTE: This post was written while I was shitcanned. It was saved and not posted until the next day. This review has been edited for brevity, but not for content. Consider everything SIC. Name: The Chalet Location: 1630 Colorado Blvd (Cross Street: Townsend Avenue), Los Angeles, CA 90041 Date: Th. march 1, 2007 Rating: chewbacca (4.5 out of 5 stars) The Chalet is a bar nestled into the artsy, cutting-edge town of Eagle Rock. Remniscient of every ski trip you ever took with your family, it’s the perfect place to woo a woman in a dark corner. Blazing fireplace, dark wood, yetis…the entire affair is an Alpine dream come true. I couldn’t recommend this place more. Two things you need to know about the Chalet–strike that–two people you need to know at the Chalet. First person: chewbacca. Not from Kashyyk. From the Chalet. a 7′89″ black man with a fro whose waist is higher than my head. He’ll crush you, and he’s a...
