Not So Fast - Hillary Slipping In Polls Says LA Times
2008-04-16 13:53:00 Hillary Clinton’s leads over Barack Obama in Pennsylvania and Indiana might be slipping, reports the Los Angeles Times . The poll shows Barack Obama leading in Indiana by five percentage points. The news comes just before Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama square off for their 21st debate in Philadephia. With three crucial Democratic primaries looming, Hillary Rodham Clinton may not be headed toward the blockbuster victories she needs to jump-start her presidential bid — even in Pennsylvania, the state that was supposed to be her ace in the hole, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found. The survey found the New York senator leading Barack Obama by 5 percentage points in Pennsylvania, which votes next Tuesday. Such a margin would not give her much of a boost in the battle for the party’s nomination. What is more, the poll found Clinton trailed Obama by 5 percentage points in Indiana, another Rust Belt state that should play to her strengths among blue-collar... More About: Polls , Fast , Hillary

Hell’s Kitchen
2008-04-16 03:10:00 Not to get all entertainment on everyone, but I’ve got to admit that I’m addicted to Hell ’s Kitchen . Rolling right in after American Idol has got to be a sweet deal for the extreme cooking show. I would have always thought that being a chef would be a killer job, but after watching Chef Gordon Ramsay, it remind me more of R. Lee Ermey’s Gny. Sgt. Hartmann’s basic training course in Full Metal Jacket. Not exactly the same, but with the same break them down and build them up into new men and women quality. The aspiring chefs are all holding chickens. And, they also have meat cleavers. Someone call PETA! They’re going to chop some chicken. Maybe not — Gordon Ramsay tells everyone take put their chickens back into their pens. They’re all chopping dead chickens from the store. Chef Ramsay’s looking at some dude — Jason from Las Vegas — who has seriously messed up his slice of chicken. Everyone on Hell’s Kitche...
American Idol Top 7
2008-04-16 02:13:00 David Archuleta takes the first slot on tonight’s American Idol competition featuring Mariah Carey’s “When You Believe.” Randy says David Archuleta can sing anything. Paula praises David Archuleta saying that he made Mariah proud. Simon weighs in saying that David Archuleta has set a benchmark for the singing competition. Carly Smithson is up next with Mariah Carey’s “Without You.” Randy says that he likes that Carly Smithson challenged herself with the song. Randy says Carly needs to believe in herself when she sings the lower notes. Paula likes that Carly showed some vocal restraint. Simon says he wanted to hear Carly Smithson sing to song, but he doesn’t think that she pulled it off. Cutie Syesha Mercado takes to the stage to sing Mariah Carey’s “Vanishing.” Randy says Syesha Mercado did a good job singing. Paula praises Syesha saying it was magical. Simon says technically it was good but that song choice ma...

Getting The Common Man Wrong
2008-04-15 09:00:00 Jacob Levin writes in the Indiana Daily Student’s Sample Gates blog that Barack Obama is getting the common man wrong. It’s Monday, and the latest straw in our tenuous grasp is Obama’s now-famous “clinging” statement. Now, I suppose he didn’t divide his supporters, since Obama is the choice candidate of just about every haughty atheist I’ve met this season (even though I’ve always felt that believing in his “change” requires more faith than believing in God). Furthermore, I don’t assume that most people casting votes for the Senator in November will use their FOID cards as secondary forms of identification. But for someone who wants to lead a party that constantly says it is for “the people”, he’s following a long, established tradition of getting the common man wrong. Chicago Police Fire On Cougar
2008-04-15 04:12:00 Chicago police opened fire on a cougar on the city’s North side. Fox News Chicago showed video of Chicago police shooting at the cougar earlier this evening. Reports the Chicago Tribune: Police cornered the cougar in the back yard of Ben Greene, 39, who lives on the 3400 block of North Hoyne. Greene said he heard a volley of gunfire shortly before 6 p.m. as he was bathing his 10-month-old son. His wife, Kate, ran upstairs screaming with their 3-year-old son, and they all took cover in a back room. “At first I’m thinking there’s a gun battle in the street,” said Greene, who owns a trucking company. As the shots stopped Greene heard the police yelling, “We got him! We got him!” Greene ventured downstairs and moved on his knees to the front door, where he saw police on his lawn. The officers had shot holes in an air conditioning unit on the side of Greene’s house while aiming for the cougar, which died near Greene’s garage. Video to... More About: Chicago , Fire

Obama Says Hillary Will Do Anything To Get Elected
2008-04-14 19:56:00 Barack Obama fires back at Hillary Clinton’s weekend appearance at a Crown Point bar where she downed a shot of Crown Royal and hoisted a mug of Old Style. The Chicago Tribune’s “Swamp” is keeping up with the intra-party battle for the hearts and minds of the folks in small towns in Pennsylvania and Indiana. Says Barack Obama: “Around election time, the candidates can’t do enough. They’ll promise you anything, give you a long list of proposals and even come around, with TV crews in tow, to throw back a shot and a beer,” Obama said, stirring laughter from an audience of steelworkers and steel industry executives. “But if those same candidates are taking millions of dollars in contributions from the PACs and the lobbyists, ask yourself, who are they going to be toasting once the election is over?” he continued. Clinton’s campaign fired back saying in an email that Obama does the same thing when he bowls, buys expensive ham and talks about ...
How Can It Be?
2008-04-13 21:15:00 Homeownership rates still higher than in the 1990s Despite the constant drumbeat about an ever worsening economy that will send all of us to the breadlines of the Great Depression because we’re all going to lose our homes, comes news that homeownership rates are still higher now — even in the midst of the “subprime crisis” — than they were during the Clinton years. Writes George Will: So far during this “crisis,” the homeownership rate has declined just three-tenths of 1 percent since it peaked in 2004. At 67.8 percent, it remains higher than it was when President Bill Clinton left office. Will does ask a good question at the end of his column — when will people burdened by student loans rise up and demand their relief from the government? Why not throw that into the mix along with taxpayer paid health care and all of the other goodies that everyone wants but doesn’t want to pay for? Post from: Christopher Hedges How Can It Be?
Exciting Times In NWI
2008-04-13 16:36:00 Hillary Downs Whisky Shot in Crown Point Takes Issue With Barack Obama’s Small Town Comments These are exciting times for all political junkies living in Northwest Indiana. Whether you are a Democrat or not, it’s safe to say that all of the attention NWI is getting from Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton is great fun for the politically minded. It’s also the beginning of a Hillary Clinton political offensive versus Barack Obama. Hillary Clinton is casting herself as a candidate that can drink a mug of Old Style and down a shot with the common people in a small town while Barack Obama tries to explain the nuances of his comment that small town folks turn bitter when things go bad and end up turning to guns or God as a means of escape, unlike folks in San Francisco and other urban areas. Reports the AP on Barack Obama’s ‘bitter’ controversy: Barack Obama is working to diffuse a controversy over his comment that small town voters are “bitter.&... More About: Times
Give David Archuleta American Idol Title Now?
2008-04-12 16:21:00 I read a recent article about this year’s American Idol 7 and it mentioned the thought that many Idol observers have had ever since the show narrowed down the contestants to the Top 24: David Archuleta will be the next American Idol. David Archuleta consistently is predicted to be safe by Dial Idol. However, having been one American Idol observer who has put my bets on several contestants who haven’t made it through the various cuts over the last couple of months — I was rooting for cuties Amy Davis, Asia’h Epperson, and Ramiele Malubay — it’s always safe to assume that we can’t always tell what will happen on American Idol. If we knew right away who would win this year’s American Idol title, it wouldn’t be any fun to watch the show, would it? Some are taking this position by placing their hopes on Carly Smithson — she hasn’t connected with me yet — while others are wishing on the stars for crowd pleaser Dav... More About: Give , Title

More On Hidden Blog Spam
2008-04-11 19:58:00 Some are calling it a “spam epidemic.” Major blogs have been hacked and were pointing hidden links to spam sites, reports Blog Herald. Tony has discovered that ZDnet appears to have been impacted. In addition, Kevin Burton who is the founder & CEO of Tailrank comments on the significant impact of what he calls a ‘blog spam epidemic’. CenterNetworks also has some coverage of the issue. Check your code for anything suspicious since if the A-list sites can get fooled, then the little guy is at huge risk. I pulled the plug on NWIblogs.com for a little while because I had people from Russian domains and other strange places wanting to sign up for an account. Why would someone from overseas want to blog about Northwest Indiana issues? I don’t think they did anything to the blog, but since the A-listers were getting attacked, I figured it might be good to check through everything over the weekend just to make sure. I also want to rethink the idea in a way that... More About: Spam , Hidden
Housekeeping Items
2008-04-11 04:01:00 Just a quick housekeeping note — NWIblogs.com’s posts will be coming over here an effort to simplify and consolidate my blogging activities. The NWIblogs.com URL will point to a page on this site with the links to various NWI blogs. I just upgraded this blog to WP 2.5 after reading that Technorati is not indexing sites that haven’t upgraded to WordPress’ latest version because hackers are exploiting vulnerable and orphan blogs. This is another reason for the consolidation — it is easier to keep one site maintained than it is to try to keep up with many. If you let your guard down, your site will be attacked by spammers. Please let me know by leaving a comment if you find anything that has become broken or acts strangely. Post from: Christopher Hedges Housekeeping Items
Michael Johns | American Idol
2008-04-11 03:00:00 American Idol shocker! Michael Johns gets voted off. American Idol is sending Michael Johns home tonight. Simon says he’s going to miss Michael Johns. Randy and Paula are seen hugging Michael as the show closes. Brooke White and Carly Smithson look visibly upset. The bottom three contestants were Michael Johns, Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson, showing that the DialIdol predictions while good at showing who the top contestants might be are only estimations of how America is voting. Speaking of America voting, all three major presidential candidates appeared on American Idol this evening with John McCain getting some laughs from the audience. Indiana Feels Like New Hampshire & Iowa
2008-04-10 20:14:00 Obama ate breakfast at the Sunrise Cafe in South Bend this morning. People were lined up in bad weather this morning awaiting Barack Obama’s arrival at Gary, Indiana ’s Roosevelt High School. Hillary Clinton plans a trip to Valparaiso. Will she grab a bite to eat with Valpo well-wishers at a local restaurant when she stops in Northwest Indiana? Bill Clinton is wandering around southern Indiana. Indiana is starting to feel like New Hampshire and Iowa with all of the retail politics going on in the Hoosier state as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama battle for every Democratic vote they each can get in Indiana’s primary. The battle and all of the campaign activity is enough to make Republicans want to switch over and vote for one of the two candidates this spring — despite threats by Democratic officials to try to block these voters from casting a ballot. Look for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to start knocking on doors if the Democratic primary polls continue...
Jesus & American Idol | Controversy Over Edited Lyrics | Mariah’s
2008-04-10 14:06:00 American Idol’s “Idol Gives Back” charity show last night has some people fired up about the closing song choice. The Top 8 American Idol contestants sang “Shout to the Lord” with modified lyrics. Reports Reality TV Magazine about the controversy that has erupted among sensitive people who are easily offended: Leave it to American Idol to step into a huge controversy with a charity fundraiser. To close out Idol Gives Back, the American Idol top 8 finalists sang “Shout To The Lord.” By ending the show with a Christian song, it ran the risk of possible offending people of other religions. However, the finalists sang a modified version of the song. Instead of singing the verse that goes “My Jesus , My Savior,” the finalists sang “My Shepherd, My Savior.” Jesus was replaced with the word “shepherd.” The change was likely an attempt by American Idol producers to lessen any controversy among people of different religions. However, the modifica... More About: American Idol , Lyrics , American , Controversy
Vote Early, But Not Often
2008-04-10 13:31:00 Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are hoping voters will take advantage of early voting, reports Eric Potter for the Post-Tribune. Will early voting make a difference in the Indiana primary results? Some say early voting increases voter turnout for elections. Writes Kahrin Deines in Medill Reports Chicago: “Early voting has been very popular this primary season,” said Paul Gronke, a professor at Reed College in Portland, Ore. and an early-voting expert. “Nearly every state that has early voting has reported a dramatic increase. And total turnout has been heavily Democratic.” Post from: Christopher Hedges Vote Early, But Not Often

Barack Obama | Road To Change | Indiana Tour 2008
2008-04-10 00:46:00 Excited about Barack Obama coming to Northwest Indiana and other parts of the Hoosier state? There’s nothing much else going on right now, so feel free to admit it. There are plenty of people in Northwest Indiana who are fired up about the Democratic presidential candidate if the numbers of folks lined up outside of the Barack Obama HQ in the Commons shopping center on 5th in Gary earlier today is any indication. Obama’s event at a Gary’s Roosevelt High School at 25th and Harrison will probably end up being an overflow event. Here’s the brief outline for Barack Obama’s “Road to Change ” tour of Indiana: Tonight: Barack Obama will visit South Bend’s Washington High School. Thursday: Barack Obama campaigns at Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana at 11 a.m. and then is off to Jefferson High School in Lafayette at 6 p.m. Friday: Barack Obama will head south to Columbus, Indiana (maybe Columbus East High School, according to a ...
Barack Obama Readies ‘Knockout’ Blow
2008-04-10 00:19:00 Having a little fun with Hillary Clinton’s “Rocky” allusions, Reuters writes that Barack Obama is getting set to knockout his competition in the Pennsylvania primary. Writes John Whitesides in “Obama takes aim at knockout blow in Pennsylvania“: Barack Obama is gaining ground on Hillary Clinton in Pennsylvania, moving within range of an April 22 upset that could end the hard-fought Democratic presidential race months earlier than expected. … opinion polls show Obama cutting Clinton’s once big lead in Pennsylvania to single digits and making gains among some voting blocs that have been her most reliable backers. An Obama win would be a shocking twist in a Democratic race filled with them … . We want Hillary to stay in the race for a little while longer — at least until the Indiana primary is over. It won’t be any fun May 6 if Barack Obama has already knocked out his competition. Post from: Christopher Hedges Barack Obama ... More About: Knockout
Death By Extreme Blogging?
2008-04-09 20:59:00 The New York Times reports that two pro bloggers have died as a result of their extreme blogging. … they profess a love of the nonstop action and perhaps the chance to create a global media outlet without a major up-front investment. At the same time, some are starting to wonder if something has gone very wrong. In the last few months, two among their ranks have died suddenly. Two weeks ago in North Lauderdale, Fla., funeral services were held for Russell Shaw, a prolific blogger on technology subjects who died at 60 of a heart attack. In December, another tech blogger, Marc Orchant, died at 50 of a massive coronary. A third, Om Malik, 41, survived a heart attack in December. Blogging is a health hazard, I’m sure some net nannies will say. Maybe it should be banned when the government takes over health care? Or, better yet, maybe tax it into submission and divert the funds into the general fund. By the way, instead of staying up all night to post an article, it is e... More About: Extreme , Death

Steve had a post about the rumors that were flying around Valpo last night before the news broke officially. Hoosier Access’ Scott weighs in on Jon Costas’ announcement. Anyway, a quiet week of behind-the-scenes maneuvering burst into the open on Tuesday evening, with the announcement of the candidacy of Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas and the (Hoosierpundit-predicted) withdrawal of Secretary of State Todd Rokita from the race entirely (due, of course, to the also-predicted family considerations of a newborn). DOJ To Watch Indiana Primary Voting
More articles from this author:2008-04-09 13:28:00 The Department of Justice will be out in force watching voting when Hoosiers go to the polls for the Indiana primary May 6. Many are predicting record voter turnout for Democratic primary voting in Indiana because Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are neck and neck in their race to win Indiana’s votes and convention delegates. Reports Nathan Blackford of Warrick Publishing Online: Those who come out to vote on May 6 — and those working at the polls — shouldn’t be too surprised if there is a bit of added scrutiny. United States Department of Justice observers will be in Indiana, making sure everything is done according to the law. With Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton locked in a tight race to gain the Democratic Party’s nomination for president, Indiana’s 72 convention votes are now more important than they’ve been in a long time. “It’s been 40 years since we’ve had anything like this,” said (Warrick County Clerk Shannon) Weisheit. “We’re on the radar ...
