Manufacturing and Service Sectors were growing with double-digit growth rate. This year picture is different. Overall growth momentum is slowing down. There is decrease in manufacturing sector also. Rupee is appreciating and stronger rupee has affected country’s export drive. Some key export sectors like textiles have witnessed a large-scale joblessness. Textiles have become uncompetitive due to appreciation of rupee. The customs act was formulated in 1962. One of the objectives of the custom act is to afford protection to indigenous industries in the country and keep the imports at a level to secure the exchange rate of Indian Currency. At present, the income-tax exemption limit for individuals is Rs 1.10 lakh. Income above Rs. 2.5 lakh is taxable at the rate of 31.5%. In other emerging economies, individuals earning similar amount are not taxed at such a high rate. India is still a developing country and prices continue to grow up. Excellent GDP growth rate is of no benefit, if employment is not generated and rising prices are not controlled. Unless benefits of growing economy are reached to the masses, such growth rate is not socially sustainable. So, my proposal was to offer maximum exemptions and tax relief to middle class, salaried people, senior citizens and farmers. Tax exemption should be offered up to the income of Rs. 1.5 lakh. This year the theme of Chaos is NASHA symbolizing the addiction and ecstasy of dance, music and lots of other cultural activities. One good news is that the entire festival will be held at Louis Kahn Plaza on the old campus. Louis Kahn Plaza is a huge stage with superb audio effects. IIM alumnus, singer Gaurav Dagaonkar's album 'College Days' will be released on Saturday. This album was shot on campus at IIM - Ahmedabad. Gaurav chose his passion music as a career to lucrative MNC career. Pakistani Band Fuzon will also be here on Sunday. Another big attraction is KK. Indipop artist KK will also perform on Sunday.
