The Google Adsense ‘trail’
2007-09-12 21:41:00 Try typing `jobs’ on Googl e search, and you might be in for a surprise — on the sponsored links column, one of the ads is by competitor Yahoo! That is probably why Murugavel Janakiraman, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Bharatmatrimony.com, comfortably maintains relations with both companies — Yahoo is an investor in his portal, while the other provides advertising space for the matchmaker. However, it isn’t just the big players who are benefiting from Google AdWords and AdSense. A whole network has arisen, which includes advertisers from SMEs to MNCs, hosts from large publishing portals to individual bloggers, and, of course, the 50 million Internet users in the country. According to a comScore Media Matrix 2005 report, about 80 per cent of Internet users access Google.com. K. Sundararaman, Acting Sales Head, Google India, sheds some light on how this network works. He says that apart from the ads that appear on www.google.com, there is Google AdSense, which all... More About: Adsense , Google Adsense , TRAI
New Paypal Service: A security conscious payment suite
2007-09-05 22:49:00 Paypal has launched a product aimed at helping small and medium businesses accept online payments securely and cost-effectively. The Website Payment s Pro product is the first non-hosted payment suite from Paypal, a subsidiary of online auction giant eBay. It includes Express Checkout, Direct Payment API and Virtual Terminal functions, so firms can let shoppers choose how to pay for their purchases. The Direct Payment API lets businesses accept credit or debit card payments. Buyers enter card details directly on the website of the business and payments are processed through Paypal. Customers can also pay for their goods using Paypal’s Express Checkout, removing the need to re-enter billing or delivery information with every purchase. Buyers can use any major credit or debit card, bank account or Paypal account balance. The Virtual Terminal allows businesses to accept orders offline via phone, fax or mail and then enter the details online so the transaction is processed by Paypal. C... Google Adsense Referral Adverts Not Displaying
2007-09-05 22:47:00 We’ve heard that many publishers are having trouble viewing referral 2.0 ads on their pages, and we’d like to explain some of the most common reasons why this might be. First, keep in mind that not all referral ads are available in all sizes. For instance, most horizontal referral ad units smaller than 180×60, square referral ad units smaller than 125×125, and text links are only available at this time for Google products such as AdSense or AdWords. This means that if you generate code for referral ads in an unsupported size, you won’t see any referrals shown on your webpages. To avoid this issue, we recommend first selecting categories or products for your referrals before selecting a size at this time. Similarly, you may not see the referral ads you’ve selected on your pages if you’ve grouped a number of referral ads into your Ad Shopping Cart which are each available in different sizes. If this is the case, you may wish to try regenerat... More About: Adsense , Google Adsense , Referral , Adverts
Hover to work when you buy your own ‘real-life’ full size flyin
2007-08-31 18:23:00 It has been called the vehicle of the future and the ultimate way to beat the rush hour commute. It is the M 200G, otherwise known as a “flying saucer”, which is being built by a company in Davis, California called Moller International. It says the futuristic contraption will go on sale in a few months and hopes to expand production to 250 a year. Company representatives say it is easy to operate, with plenty of leg room and space for a passenger. But customers may still have a while to wait. So far, the flying car’s inventor has been hard at work for more than four decades - and despite frequent assurances that success is just around the corner, the vehicle has yet to get anywhere near the mass market. “Highway in the sky” Capable of vertical take-off and landing, the craft - so far a one-off prototype - hovers like a helicopter up to 10ft off the ground. Any higher and the driver would need a pilot’s licence. It is the brainchild of Dr Paul Moll... More About: Life , Work , Real , Full , Size
Student and professor build ‘budget super-computer’
2007-08-31 18:21:00 When Tim Brom 07’ set out to build a budget supercomputer with Calvin computer science professor Joel Adams, he didn’t know the product of his efforts might end up in his checked baggage headed for England. Brom, now a graduate student at the University of Kentucky continuing his studies in computer science, worked with Adams to build Microwulf, a machine that is among the smallest and least expensive supercomputers on the planet. “It’s small enough to check on an airplane or fit next to a desk,” said Brom. This may prove useful next summer when Brom and others from his graduate program travel to England to do work that will require “a significant amount of computing power.” And as the price of commercial supercomputers is often prohibitive for many educational institutions, bringing a “personal” supercomputer like Microwulf could be a cost-effective solution for the group of graduate researchers. “So far as we can tell, this is the first supercomputer to have th... Storm Trojan Hits Google’s Blogger Service
2007-08-30 18:25:00 Careful whose blog you’re reading these days: Researchers have discovered the Storm Trojan nestled in hundreds of blog sites in Google ’s Blogger network. This Storm infection is not simple comment spam, where spammers post their junk messages and malware as blog comments. “These are blogs that post spam,” says Alex Eckelberry, CEO of Sunbelt Software, who has been studying the posts. He says he hasn’t seen any legitimate blogs bites being hacked and sprinkled with Storm, but he’s still researching the trend. Eckelberry, who first discovered Storm executable files on several blogger sites this week, says Storm is showing up on blogs that use the mail-2-blogger feature, where bloggers can post via email. Google does have a CAPTCHA defense in place to prevent this kind of infection, requiring some bloggers to manually enter their code in order to post their blogs. “But these guys are somehow flying under the radar,” Eckelberry says. &ldqu... Google Adwords Improved top ad placement formula now in effect
2007-08-27 02:17:00 Two weeks ago, we posted about an upcoming improvement to the formula used to determine which ads are placed in the top spots above Google search results. The change offers advertisers more control over when their ads achieve top placement, while also increasing the quality of our ad results for users. Today, we wanted to let you know that the improved formula is now in effect. To recap, the key change to the formula is how we consider price. Like the formula used for ranking ads alongside Google search results, the top ad placement formula now considers an ad’s maximum CPC. Previously, the formula for top placement considered an ad’s actual CPC. Since actual CPC is determined, in part, by the bidding behavior of the advertisers below you, your ad’s chance of being promoted to a top spot could have been constrained by a factor you couldn’t influence. As always, the top ad placement formula will weight Quality Score much more heavily in comparison to maximum CPC, ... More About: Formula , Google Adwords , Adwords , Effect
The One TeraByte Hard Disk! - 1000 GigaBytes!
2007-08-13 20:41:00 IMAGINE ONE THOUSAND thousand thousand thousand bytes. A terabyte, if you will. But more than just that—a milestone in storage capacity that hard drive manufacturers have been chasing for years. After more than a decade of living in a world of gigabytes, the bar has finally been raised by Hitachi’s terabyte-capacity Deskstar 7K1000. Being first to the terabyte mark gives Hitachi bragging rights, and more importantly, the ability to offer single-drive storage capacity 33% greater than that of its competitors. Hitachi isn’t banking on capacity alone, though. The 7K1000 is also outfitted with a whopping 32MB of cache—double what you get with other 3.5″ hard drives. Couple that extra cache with 200GB platters that have the highest areal density of any drive on the market, and the 7K1000’s performance could impress as much as its capacity. Has Hitachi achieved a perfect balance of speed and storage with its Deskstar 7K1000? We’ve tested it against nearly... More About: Disk , Hard , Hard Disk , Tera , Gaby
Google to Stop Web Video Rentals, Sales
2007-08-11 19:34:00 Google Inc. is shutting down a service that sold and rented online video, ending a 19-month experiment doomed by the proliferation of free clips on other websites like the Internet search leader’s YouTube subsidiary. The decision, confirmed late Friday, underscores Google’s intention to concentrate its financial muscle and brainpower on developing an advertising format to capitalize on the immense popularity of online video. YouTube, which Google bought last year for $1.76 billion, is expected to be the focal point of the company’s expansion into video advertising. Google executives hope to settle on an effective advertising system for video ads by the end of this year. Google already makes most of its money from ads, but most of those are static, text-based messages posted alongside search results and other written content on the Web. The video section on Google’s website will remain open, but will stop showing paid programming Aug. 15. Google has been selli... More About: Video , Google , Sales , Stop , Rentals
New Copyright and Fair Use Project Announced!
2007-08-10 20:10:00 American University’s Center for Social Media and Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property are undertaking a multifaceted project. “Copyright and Fair Use in Participatory Media,” to promote standards for the use of copyrighted materials in user-generated media that is broadcast over the internet. This project builds on the two organizations’ success in helping to establish “best practices” for fair use by documentary filmmakers. Nonprofessional, online video now accounts for a sizeable portion of all broadband traffic, with much of the work weaving in copyrighted material. “We’re pretty much a mixed-media generation,” one student told American University researchers. A new culture is emerging—remix culture, an unpredictable mix of the witty, the vulgar, the politically and culturally critical, and the just plain improbable. For a greatest-hits-of, watch Remix Culture. What’s fair in online-video use of copyrighted material? The healthy growth o... More About: Project , Fair Use , Anno
Hacker strips DRM from streaming Netflix movies
2007-08-09 22:08:00 A hacker has posted instructions for how to save streamed movies from the Netflix service, undermining Microsoft’s copy protection technology designed to prevent people from saving the content. The hack is the latest in an escalating technical war by hackers against DRM (Digital Rights Management) technologies, which limit how music and movies can be used in order to prevent piracy. Netflix, which is best known for its mail-based movie rental service, introduced a service in January called Watch Now that lets people watch movies and TV shows immediately on their computer. Users can watch a certain number of hours of streamed content per month depending on their subscription. A hacker who calls himself Dizzie wrote late last month on the Rorta hacking forum that “Netflix doesn’t easily allow you to save the flicks and watch them at your leisure because the films are entrapped in some … Windows Media DRM wrapper,” referring to Microsoft’s DRM system. Word of his hack sprea... More About: Movies , Hacker , Streaming , Ming
Amazon vs. Paypal vs. Google Checkout
2007-08-08 20:17:00 Amazon, in its bid to become the underlying utility of the new web world, today confirmed what had been rumored earlier: a payment service that will compete with PayPal and to some extent, the nascent Googl e Checkout services. Just to be clear, Google Checkout and Amazon FPS are not building their own payment service, where PayPal has a clear lead. Instead they are using the credit card infrastructure to enable payments and online transactions. As a discrete offering, Amazon Flexible Payment Services (still in beta) may seem like a me-too service. However, when juxtaposed against the whole gamut of web services being offered by the company, it is a Trojan horse like strategy, one that can start to eat away at PayPal’s business. It is not a surprise, that both Google and Amazon want a slice of PayPal’s cake. In the most recent quarter, PayPal had net revenues of $454 million, up 34% over the $339 million reported in Q2-06. More importantly, PayPal Merchant Services transactions j... More About: Amazon , Paypal
New alternative to JPEG by Microsoft
2007-08-02 18:33:00 update Microsoft ’s alternative to the ubiquitous JPEG image format could soon become a standard, a major step in the company’s ambitions to spread the technology and boost its Vista operating system. In coming months, 16 national standards groups will formally vote on whether the Joint Photographic Experts Group, after which the JPEG file format is named, should make Microsoft’s relatively new HD Photo format a standard. Getting to this stage is a good sign in Microsoft’s view, and the company has hopes the format will be accepted as a standard called JPEG XR by mid-2008, said Robert Rossi, principal program manager at Microsoft for emerging image and video technology. “The fact that this happened is a very strong endorsement. It’s very rare for this to be reversed in the formalities that happen between now and October,” Rossi said. Microsoft already had declared its standardization intent, but had been mum on details. Official Google Guidlines On Link Exchanges and Linking
2007-07-29 18:27:00 Link schemes Your site’s ranking in Googl e search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. The quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating. The sites that link to you can provide context about the subject matter of your site, and can indicate its quality and popularity. However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site’s ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include: Links intended to manipulate PageRank Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web Link exchange and reciprocal links schemes (”Link to me and I’ll link to you.”) Buying or selling links The best way to get other sites to create relevant link...
